A common ploy in the creation of anthologies is to attempt to complete a picture by using uncompleted or unfinished work from several sources and merging them together in order to make a return on the investments. Such is the case for this amalgamation of tales, as the backstory of each segment is equally troubled as much as enjoyable. The first segment from Yuen Chor was started five years earlier as a film titled “Hellish Soul” before it got shelved and needed reshoots by Ho Meng Hua several years later as “The Ghost” before that got shelved again. Meanwhile, Mou Tun-fei's film “The Prize Fighter” was eventually halted midway through production and turned into a short. These two shorts then form the basis for this solid Shaw Brothers anthology.

In the early 1960s, the Kuomintang (Kmt) government’s White Terror in Taiwan, which had begun in 1949, was rife. However, one wouldn’t be aware of such dire political and social turmoil when watching director Pai Ko’s final film, “Romance at Lung Shang Temple” (1962). Completed just before its director’s arrest and imprisonment, the rom-com-musical is a sweet and optimistic affair that deftly alludes to the social tensions of the day.

Marking its 15th edition this year, The Osaka Asian Film Festival (Oaff), under programming director Teruoka Sozo, will again select high-quality Asian films. The Competition section, which receives increased recognition every year, will again select films previously unreleased in Japan. The Hong Kong Arts Centre has unveiled its Moving Images Programme for the month of November, which includes Once in a Blue Moon – Experimental Images by Ko I-cheng as well as their monthly signature programme Golden Scene Selection. Here are all the details.

The film Blue Moon is separated into five parts, respectively labeled “red”, “orange”, “yellow”, “green” and “blue”. These parts can be presented in different orders, weaving 120 possible stories of a romantic triangle. This experimental film breathes the mysteriousness, possibilities and impermanence of romance; it also explores the nature of urbanity and how people live and love in a city.
Director Ko I-cheng will introduce his film in a video before each screening starts and he will attend the post screening video chat of the screening of Blue Moon (Audience’s Choice) , Jessey Tsang (Hong Kong director) and Dr.
