New York-based The Film Sales Company has pounced on the worldwide rights to Colombian documentary feature “Igualada” by Juan Mejía Botero ahead of its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in the World Cinema Documentary Competition sidebar.
Mejía Botero, whose most recent feature documentary “Death by a Thousand Cuts” won the Audience Award at Doc NYC, chronicles politician Francia Márquez’s groundbreaking journey from her start as a rural grassroot activist to her history-making campaign to become not only the first black but also the first female president of her native Colombia.
Given exclusive access, Mejía Botero follows Márquez as she “dares to challenge the status quo by launching a presidential campaign in Colombia, a nation beset by profound racial and socio-economic disparities,” per the synopsis.
Reclaiming the derogatory term “igualada” (used to belittle individuals asserting rights deemed beyond their position in society), Márquez propels a movement into the upper spheres of influence,...

Magnolia Pictures has acquired the U.S. rights to “There There,” the latest film from “Support the Girls” and “Results” filmmaker Andrew Bujalski, out of the Tribeca Film Festival.
“There There” is described as an “uneasy comedy” about a delirious mirror image of everyday life in a distinctly twisted and discordant world. The film stars Jason Schwartzman, Lili Taylor, Lennie James, Molly Gordon, Avi Nash, Annie La Ganga, Roy Nathanson and Jon Natchez.
Magnolia plans to release the film later this year.
“There There” is something of an experimental film in which eight different performers were each filmed in isolation but then brought together in the edit. The story involves characters negotiating trust with one another. Oddly enough, the actors in the film were never within 1,000 miles of each other, and each gave their performances not even within a week of one another.

Bujalski said he couldn’t imagine a better partner than Magnolia to bring this “deeply off-kilter movie to the world.” “As distributors their savvy is extraordinary, but moreover, their level of commitment, both to filmmakers and their audiences, is unparalleled,” added the helmer, who also penned the film.

Ray Halbritter, the Oneida Indian Nation Representative, CEO of Oneida Nation Enterprises, and a trustee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Museum, has launched Standing Arrow Productions, a privately-funded, independent film and TV production company aimed at increasing the representation and championing the narratives of Native American and Indigenous peoples on screen. Halbritter has already optioned the first book that he will adapt: “The Real All Americans: The Team That Changed a Game, A People, A Nation” by award-winning sports journalist and Washington Post columnist Sally Jenkins.

Lena Headey on Immigration Drama ‘The Flood’: ‘Maybe It Will Grow a Bit More Compassion’ (Exclusive)
Lena Headey wants her new movie, “The Flood,” to further understanding of immigration crises around the world. She plays Wendy in the film, a British immigration officer deciding the fate of an asylum seeker. “What I hope, personally, is we change 10 minds, or people reconsider how they feel about someone who has lost everything,” she told Variety. “Or maybe it will grow a bit more compassion, understanding, curiosity or bravery.”
Helen Kingston’s script for “The Flood” draws on real-life stories after her, producer Luke Healy and director Anthony Woodley spent time volunteering in Calais, France, a refugee hot spot. Kingston’s work is “a really smart take on what’s happening,” Headey said, adding that the film deals with its subject matter without preaching or being overtly political. “I think it’s a very quiet, strong bit of cinema and it’s really honest about what’s happening and...
