The Gilgo-Beach murder case suspect, Rex Heuermann, 60, was charged with a fourth killing this week, after being charged with three first-degree murder counts in the killings of escorts Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Costello, and Megan Waterman in July 2023. This week, he pleaded not guilty to the second-degree murder charge of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, who was reported missing in 2007.
In attendance at the hearing were Heuermann’s ex-wife, Asa Ellerup, and 26-year-old daughter, Victoria, whose trash found on the Long Island Rail Road by undercover detectives helped tie Heuermann to Maureen Brainard-Barnes.
Detectives collected DNA samples from a discarded drink from Heuermann’s daughter, along with various samples from Ellerup, and connected the DNA to a hair found wrapped in the belt buckle used to restrain Brainard-Barnes. They also used an old pizza box collected from the suspect’s home to connect the link to DNA evidence found at the crime scene.

From 2010 to 2011, the remains of 11 people were discovered near Gilgo Beach in Long Island’s remote South Shore. The grisly discoveries sent waves of terror and grief through the community, and for more than a decade, the murders went unsolved. Then, in July 2023, there was a break in the case — and for the first time in 13 years, there was a clear suspect of who may have been responsible.
In the untitled three-part documentary series from Story Syndicate and director Liz Garbus, the conclusion to the multi-decade quest for justice unfolds in real time. The series will tell the stories of the victims’ lives via exclusive interviews with their families, and will review how police were finally able to identify Rex Heuermann, a prolific NYC architect living in Nassau County, as a suspect. Rex Heuermann, the Long Island Serial Killer (Lisk) suspect, has been charged in connection to the murder of a fourth woman. The 59-year-old returned to court on Tuesday, where he pleaded not guilty to the second-degree murder of Maureen Brainard-Barnes.
The charges surrounding Brainard-Barnes mark the last of “The Gilgo Four” murders to be officially attributed to Heuermann and the closure of the grand jury investigation. While at least 10 bodies were discovered buried on the coast of Long Island’s Gilgo Beach in Dec. 2010, police believed the corpses of four...

A new Peacock docuseries about the ex-wife and family of suspected Long Island serial killer Rex Heuermann has unsurprisingly irked authorities and some families of victims potentially tied to the case.
The project was first confirmed earlier this month, and, as The New York Times notes, camera crews have been spotted at the home of Heuermann’s ex, Asa Ellerup, as well as following her to one of Heuermann’s recent court hearings. 50 Cent’s G-Unit Productions is helping to develop the project along with Texas Crew Productions and New York Post Entertainment.

Deadline has confirmed that Peacock is working on a documentary series that will follow the family of accused Gilgo Beach Serial Killer Rex Heuermann as they cope with his upcoming trial and their shattered lives.
Some reports have indicated that the family will receive upwards of $1 million for participating. Peacock had no comment on the alleged payment.
Heuermann stands accused of the murders of Amber Lynn Costello, 27, Melissa Barthelemy, 24, and Megan Waterman, 22, whose remains were found on Gilgo Beach in Long Island, New York between 2010 and 2011. He is also a suspect in several other killings in that area.
Before his arrest, Heuermann ran his own Manhattan architectural firm. He was arrested on a sidewalk in the city.
His estranged wife, Asa Ellerup, and their two adult children, Victoria and Christopher, have reportedly sold their life rights. They were seen at his arraignment this week. Ellerup has filed for divorce.

Officials are currently investigating the theory that Rex Heuermann killed his victims at his home in Long Island.
They believe that Heuermann lured his victims to his house while his family went out of town. Being able to kill his victims at his home gave him the advantage of having the necessary supplies on hand, which includes burlap bags and the tape that was found at the scene of the crime. This is why the police are combing through his house, in hopes that they will find more evidence that are connected to the women.
Despite Heuermann only being arrested two weeks ago at his office in Manhattan, officials have been looking into him since the spring. He has pleaded not guilty to the three homicides of Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy and Amber Lynn Costello.

The shocking arrest of Rex Heuermann, a New York City architect, last week seemingly ended one of Long Island’s biggest mysteries. Heuermann is accused of several murders associated with a serial killer dubbed the Long Island Serial Killer. Heuermann’s arrest is shocking, but his background isn’t the most surprising aspect of the case. More surprising is the fact that he’s not the first serial killer to call Long Island home. In fact, Heuermann is one of three killers who lived and operated in the small and quaint bedroom communities of Long Island in the last four decades. All three of the killers targeted sex workers. If you want to learn more about the other Long Island serial killers, these two podcasts are exactly what you are looking for.

Police believe that Rex Heuermann, the main suspect in the Gilgo Beach murders, kept trophies from all his victims.
They are hoping that they will be able to locate these trophies in his house and believe that he may have done this on purpose or even unconsciously kept them. This is a strong possibility as serial killers typically keep some kind of trophy whether it be a piece of jewelry or clothing from their victims.
The investigation is currently ongoing and authorities are gathering and analyzing digital and trace evidence.
His house was initially searched after he was arrested and a search warrant was obtained. While they examined his house, over 200 guns and a child-sized doll that he kept in a wooden and glass case were found. In addition to this, Heuermann had two storage units and a Chevy Avalanche, which are all in the process of being examined for evidence.
