Last night the 2014 BAFTA Awards took place, hosted by Stephen Fry from London's Royal Opera House and it was 12 Years a Slave taking Best Film and Best Actor for Chiwetel Ejiofor while Gravity was honored for Outstanding British Film and Alfonso Cuaron was named Best Director. Interestingly enough, 12 Years a Slave only won the two awards while Gravity was the night's biggest winner taking home an additional four awards in technical categories, including Score (Steven Price) and Cinematography (Emmanuel Lubezki). It's interesting to see a list of winners where Dallas Buyers Club wasn't nominated for a single award considering its two main characters played by Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto are, more or less, considered locks to win Best Actor and Supporting Actor. As for the BAFTA Awards, it was Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips) taking Best Supporting Actor and while Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) added another Best Actress award to...

Steve McQueen's drama took best picture and best actor, but it missed out in key categories – such as director and supporting actress – that it should have walked

No other Bafta best picture was possible. Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave was the worthiest of winners – despite, incidentally, a smidgen of ill-informed punditry here and there in the last few weeks about its alleged "worthiness" as code for dullness. It is a magnificent, thrilling and uplifting movie, and this award, along with the best actor prize for its male star Chiwetel Ejiofor, partly soothed my feeling that there were some exasperating misjudgments amid the good choices at this year's Baftas. 12 Years a Slave could – and should – have been better rewarded than this.
I also share the widespread feeling that Jennifer Lawrence's stock price has now peaked. Lovable though Lawrence is on- and off-screen,...

3D space disaster movie wins six awards at Royal Opera House, including best director and best British film
It was a contest between two wildly different films – a 3D space disaster movie and an unflinching portrayal of 19th-century American slavery – and on paper it was the former, Gravity, which emerged as the biggest winner at the 2014 Bafta ceremony.
It won six awards, including best director and best British film. But 12 Years a Slave unquestionably picked up the biggest prize, best film, with Chiwetel Ejiofor named as best actor.
In a year when no one film swept the board, American Hustle also came away with three prizes.
Alfonso Cuarón was named best director and said you would not know it from his accent but he considered himself a part of the British film industry. He has lived in London for 13 years and joked: "I make a very good case for curbing immigration.

Gravity, 12 Years A Slave and American Hustle lead this year's collection of BAFTA Film Award winners. Here's the full list...
Last night, lots of people headed off to London's Royal Opera House, where Stephen Fry hosted the British Academy Film Awards. That's the BAFTAs to you and us.
The BAFTAs used to be one of those ceremonies where people sent speeches to be read by other people, but these days, it seems really quite posh. Most of the nominees seemed to be in attendance, even those who didn't win, and if it carries on at this rate, the BBC may actually show us the whole event, rather than editing it down to two hours, to be shown a further two hours after it actually took place.
Anyway, the big winners turned out to be Gravity, which snared six gongs, American Hustle, which got three,...

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has just finished presenting their awards for excellence in film for 2013. While many of the awards went exactly as expected, there were still a handful of surprises to be found.
Starting off with the top categories, the worst possible scenario occurred as 12 Years a Slave won Best Film and Gravity took Outstanding British Film, meaning that we are no closer to determining which is going to be the favorite film come Oscar night. For a while there, it seemed that BAFTA had forgotten that 12 Years even existed, shockingly ignoring the film for Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress and even Best Adapted Screenplay. However, it finally managed to garner a win in the Best Actor category before going on to take Best Film.

Ahead of this year’s BAFTAs, HeyUGuys had the privilege to catch up with the writer-director of Victor + Kelly Kieran Evans who is nominated for the Best British Debut BAFTA on Sunday the 16th February. It is a nomination he never expected, but one that he admits has put him a great position.
Whilst the purpose of our conversation was his BAFTA nomination, in speaking with Kieran I uncovered a compelling story of his journey towards his nomination for outstanding debut. Behind the BAFTA gold mask lies a story of a mother and her son’s love for cinema, their appreciation of cinematic magic, a filmmakers reverence for the craft of filmmaking, and the desire to create stories that have and will continue to take us out of our space.
A fitting way to begin proceedings would be to ask about the genesis of Kelly + Victor, which has culminated in...

Andrew Pulver recommends the haunting British romantic drama Kelly + Victor. The film, from first-time feature director Kieran Evans, follows the eponymous leads as they meet, become romantically involved and find darkness lurking in the bedroom. Pulver says the film is directed with real visual flair and played with 'unforced naturalness' by its two rising stars

★★★★☆ Love hurts in more ways than one in Kieran Evans' Kelly + Victor (2012), an impressive low-budget UK indie which, despite a couple of narrative missteps, still manages to be an absorbing and passionate look at sexuality and the need for connection - however extreme. Victor (Julian Morris) meets Kelly (Antonia Campbell-Hughes) in a loved-up haze whilst out clubbing and both are immediately smitten with each other. During their first sexual encounter it's clear there's a darkness which sits beneath Kelly's meek exterior, as she seems to revel in the masochistic approach of asphyxiating Victor to climax.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has announced the nominations for the British Academy Film Awards and Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" led the pack with 11 nominations including Best Film, British Film (who knew "Gravity" was a British movie?), Director for Cuaron, Screenplay for Cuaron and his son Jonas, and Actress for Sandra Bullock.
The biggest snub in my humble opinion was "Dallas Buyers Club" which appeared nowhere on the nominations list. Apparently, the British Academy did not deem Matthew McConaughey or Jared Leto award-worthy!
The BAFTA Awards will take place on Feb. 16 at the Royal Opera house in London. Will "Gravity" emerge as the victorious movie that night? And by the way, "Gravity" was my No. 1 favorite film of 2013!
Here's the complete list of BAFTA nominations:

Early this morning saw the announcement of the nominations for the BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) awards for 2013. For the most part, they look like all of the other guild nominations we’ve seen over the past month or so (including all five director nominees who were just nominated for the DGA’s top award), but there are a few interesting differences to take note of.
First off, Philomena has a much stronger presence here, but given that it is a British film, it’s hardly surprising. You may also notice a lot of love for Behind the Candelabra, a film that was only shown on TV in the States, making it ineligible for theatrical awards.
However, aside from that, just about all the major players are here. Gravity leads the pack with 11 nominations, including Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Best Director, and Best Actress. 12 Years a...

BAFTA Awards 2014: ‘American Hustle,’ ‘Gravity,’ and ’12 Years a Slave’ tops (photo: BAFTA 2014 nominees Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence in ‘American Hustle’) Nominations for the 2014 BAFTA Awards were announced a little while ago. As usual, British Academy of Film and Television Arts have placed their focus on Big English-Language Productions — i.e., Hollywood and Anglo-Hollywood fare. (I mean, Gravity, Rush, and Saving Mr. Banks are considered "British" productions here.) Small British films and non-Hollywood productions have been — once again as usual — all but ignored. The announcement of the Bafta nominations brings into focus the varying merits of two very different kinds of movies: Alfonso Cuarón's Gravity, leading the list with 11 nominations, and Steve McQueen's 12 Years A Slave, just behind with 10.
The astronaut-thriller Gravity with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney combines state-of-the-art digital effects (a poster carries an endorsement from no less a person than Buzz Aldrin) with the old-fashioned values of escapist entertainment and spectacle. Saucer-eyed cinemagoers (including this reviewer) have staggered out of the IMAX theatre feeling that they really have just had a season in space.

★★☆☆☆ Two attractive strangers lock eyes across the floor of a Liverpool nightclub. On their way back to her place, she ominously informs him that their respective star signs promise sex that will either be devastatingly good, or just plain devastating. What follows details the perilously destructive fling of the titular Kelly + Victor (2013). Based on the novel of the same name by Niall Griffiths, Welsh director Kieran Evans' drama charts an obsessive sexual relationship posited as the only type of love left in our harsh world. Sadly, any treatise on modern attachment is hamstrung by a clumsy script and dearth of emotional engagement.
After the couple's 'meet-cute', they have sex back at Kelly's (Antonia Campbell-Hughes) house. It's this sex, and the thrill that Victor (Julian Morris) finds he derives from asphyxiation during it, that proves the catalyst for their spiralling enthralment. There's a week before they see one another again,...

Metro Manila (15)
(Sean Ellis, 2013, UK/Phi) Jake Macapagal, Althea Vega, John Arcilla. 115 mins
Street-level social drama slyly develops into gripping crime thriller in this resourceful Anglo-Asian movie, a distinctive spin on the familiar theme of innocent country folk in the corrupting city. The squalor of modern-day Manila is vividly evoked, as our goodly, hard-up couple struggle to gain a foothold, but the opportunities they get only lead them into the moral shadows.
Diana (12A)
(Oliver Hirschbiegel, 2013, UK/Fra/Bel/Swe/Moz) Naomi Watts, Naveen Andrews. 113 mins
History repeats itself as farce in this unintentionally laughable rendition of Diana's final years and her "secret" affair. It's no deeper or better informed than your average celebrity mag.

The Call (15)
(Brad Anderson, 2013, Us) Halle Berry, Abigail Breslin, Michael Eklund.

Social realism meets Ai No Corrida in Kieran Evans's provocative and well-shot drama
There's something very unsentimental and provocative being served up along with the romance in this love story from writer-director Kieran Evans. Social realism meets Ai No Corrida – or almost. Antonia Campbell-Hughes plays Kelly and Julian Morris is Victor. They are both trying to get away from something in their chaotic and scary lives, and find their escape in extreme and transgressive sex, which frightens and excites Victor, and then awakens in him a passion which he guilelessly associates with his love of nature. (I was reminded of the lines from Brecht from which Jenny Diski took the title of her novel Nothing Natural: "Let nothing be called natural/ In an age of bloody confusion.) The couple are inspired by visits to Liverpool's Walker Art Gallery, and canvasses such as Giovanni Segantini's mysterious painting The Punishment of Lust.

As the London Film Festival looms ever closer, it’s a hit from last year’s event that is soon to hit our screens – and ahead of the release of Kieran Evans’ Kelly + Victor, we spoke to Victor himself, Julian Morris.
Starring alongside actress Antonia Campbell-Hughes, Kelly + Victor tells the story of two young lover, who come together after meeting in a nightclub, and when discovering they both share a passion for aggressive, submissive sex, they embark on an intense relationship that neither of them could have foreseen. Morris discusses the more graphic side to the film and whether he’s shown this picture to his friends and family, while also telling us why he feels this project is the one he is most proud of in his career so far.
Kelly + Victor is a full on film, and certainly a brave move to have taken yourself. Did you have any apprehensions before getting involved,...

Underworld's Karl Hyde has made a feature-length documentary about his travels through Essex – here's the first glimpse of the film's trailer
Here's something you don't see every day: Karl Hyde, he of shouty techno act Underworld, has gone off and made a rather moving, artful documentary essay about the Essex borderlands, following the route of the river Roding down to the docks on the Thames estuary. Naturally, the film developed from a record project: Hyde has a solo album, Edgeland, due out next month.
Hyde has got together with director Kieran Evans, who is best known as the co-director of another music-inspired documentary, the Saint-Etienne-scored Finisterre from 2002. (Evans hus just completed his fiction-feature debut, Kelly+ Victor, due out later this year.) They have taken their cue very much from the urban travelogue school of Patrick Keiller and his Robinson films; The Outer Edges is a finely balanced mix of interview,...

Directed by newcomer Kieran Evans, "Kelly + Victor" features "Pretty Little Liars" star Julian Morris and Antonia Campbell-Hughes as the titular couple who meet on the dance floor of a Liverpool nightclub and hit it off sexually. Both are struggling to get by as best they can while the people around them are choosing illegal lifestyles; Kelly's best mate is a dominatrix prostitute, Victor's pals are aspiring drug dealers. It’s when they get into bed with each other that their darker instincts take over. Watch the trailer below. The film premieres Saturday, March 9.

Some of the best films of the 2012/2013 calender year from Richard Linklater, Harmony Korine, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Andrew Bujalski, Jeff Nichols, David Gordon Green, Shane Carruth and Joshua Oppenheimer are among the headliner names for the 2013 edition of the South by Southwest Film Festival. With a little over 100 plus film line-up (a whopping 2000+ titles were submitted), almost 70 are world premieres: there is the highly anticipated sophomore film (that has been on our radar since it first went into production) with M. Blash’s (The Wait), Joe Swanberg who makes SXSW his second home will premiere Drinking Buddies, veteran indie filmmaker John Sayles saddles in with Go For Sisters, and rounding out the Narrative Spotlight section we’ve got The Bounceback from Bryan Poyser, Loves Her Gun from Geoff Marslett along with titles we thought might break into Park City, but found an Austin home instead with Jacob Vaughan’s Milo and...

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Kieran Evans’ adaptation of Niall Griffiths’ novel of the same name is from its outset anything but a meet-cute. The titular protagonists (played by Antonia Campbell-Hughes and Julian Morris) meet while pilled-up at a Liverpool nightclub, Evans’ beautifully-lensed visuals enhancing the dream-like emotional high of their meet, and their inevitable night of inebriated passion.
The initial sex scene, like all throughout, is raw and visceral, lacking glamour, but providing piercing psychological insights into both characters; Kelly choosing to strangle Victor mid-coitus introduces the film’s sadomasochistic central theme, making it clear that Kelly is beset by an ambiguous, slow-revealing past that might – or might not – explain her bizarre sexual proclivities. In the clear, albeit hungover light of the next day, the two still want each other, and so continue to meet up for sex, but find that something else blossoms also.
What Evans arguably does best...
