Derek Hough continues his reign as one of the lords of the dance, scoring three nominations for the just-unveiled World Choreography Awards (sister Julianne Hough also makes a showing this year).
His nominations include ABC’s “Step Into…the Movies” special as well as their long-running “Dancing with the Stars,” and also Hough’s work on the music video for Michael Bublé’s “Higher.” However, married choreographers Phillip and Makenzie Chbeeb, also scored three noms each, including one with Hough for the “Higher” video, as well as for the “Zed Ramadan” TV commercial and ABC’s recent “Beauty and The Beast” anniversary special.
Jamal Sims, nominated for three Emmys this year in the choreography categories for his various projects—including Paramount+’s “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies“—garnered two nods, including his work on Netflix’s “13 the Musical” and the live “Encanto at the Hollywood Bowl.”

Apple TV+ is in the awards mix for the Ryan Reynolds-Will Ferrell musical Spirited, in particular for the big song-and-dance number “Good Afternoon” that has made the Oscar shortlists. This is a rip-roaring full-blown musical number, one that tests the stars’ ability to not only sing, but dance as well. Here, Reynolds, who suggested the song, discusses pulling it off with songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, best known for La La Land and for teaming with Hugh Jackman on The Greatest Showman. The same Jackman who is publicly campaigned against the tune for fear that Reynolds will be extra insufferable when they reprise their superhero characters Deadpool and Wolverine.
Deadline: This is quite a musical number, and if you guys get the nomination, it may be the first time for a nominated song that has the lyric “ass-less chaps.”
Ryan Reynolds: That might be worthy of its 20/20 special.

The Apple holiday movie Spirited not only reimagines the classic Christmas Carol tale from the ghosts’ perspective but it’s also a musical, forcing stars Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell to brush up on their singing and dancing for the film.
The pair have spoken about the difficulty of performing in new ways and the extensive practice that went into Spirited‘s big numbers. Reynolds even posted a rehearsal video to Instagram.
But what was the hardest part of singing and dancing on film? The moment they realized they’d have to actually do it, singing and dancing everything they’d learned at the same time.
“The most challenging part of singing and dancing is you work on them separately and you kind of forget that you have to do them simultaneously,” Ferrell told The Hollywood Reporter at Spirited‘s world premiere in New York earlier this month,...

Like a too-generous parent on Christmas morning, “Spirited” keeps doling out the shiny presents long after the recipients are sated. But if there’s a genre that begs to be maximalist, it’s a musical comedy with its roots in Charles Dickens; it’s not so much whether or not you like what “Spirited” has to offer but how much of it you can take in one sitting.
The whole “one sitting” concept may be an outdated one, since this is a film that’s going to live its life (and its Christmases Yet to Come) on Apple TV+, where there’s always a pause button. But viewers who can see “Spirited” projected on the big screen absolutely should, if only to fully appreciate the splashy (sometimes in a literal sense) choreography from Chloe Arnold, one of the film’s true MVPs.

Apple TV+’s “Spirited” brings a new twist to the Dickens classic “A Christmas Carol.” With catchy tunes from Academy Award winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, this time the story is told from the point of view of the ghosts.
This adaptation sees Will Ferrell’s Ghost of Christmas Present feeling disillusioned with his ghostly job. Alongside him are the Ghost of Christmas Past (Sunita Mani) and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. Ryan Reynolds takes on Scrooge (a.k.a. Clint Briggs), who spends his time on social media spinning lies.
The musical numbers are filled with holiday cheer, as choreographer Chloe Arnold crafts each musical number with energy as she gathers the chorus together.
For the rousing “Good Afternoon,” Reynolds exercises his vocal cords and is accompanied by the “Spirited” choir. Pasek and Paul collaborated with songwriters Khiyon Hursey, Sukari Jones, and Mark Sonnenblick.

At this point it is almost impossible to count the number of remakes, ripoffs, variations, takeoffs and general thievery on the part of filmmakers riffing on Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol. The latest imitation, Spirited, isn’t even the only new version to debut this season; I can count at least two others still waiting for liftoff as the yuletide tidings continue in 2022. But this one has some real firepower in terms of who is involved with the Apple TV+ original film, chief among them stars Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell, who deliver a take most closely aligned with Bill Murray’s modern 1988 Scrooged, a homage even noted in the rat-a-tat snarky script here by John Morris and Sean Anders (Daddy’s Home), the latter who also directed.

Will Ferrell’s signature comedy style is halfway between obnoxious and endearing, a naïve man-child whose excitable energy is matched by his fearless disregard for dignity. Anyone who’s been missing that persona should find something to enjoy in Spirited, Ferrell’s bid to headline another holiday perennial to sit alongside Elf. His delivery remains inspired and his chemistry with Ryan Reynolds, playing the smarmy Scrooge figure in this busy 21st-century riff on A Christmas Carol, has lots of fizz, even if a supposed romance with Octavia Spencer’s character doesn’t. But is the movie any good?
That will depend on how closely you identify with the delicious disdain of Patrick Page as the chain-rattling Jacob Marley, upholder of the Dickensian tradition, who rolls his eyes and begs for a reprieve almost every time someone bursts into song. Because, yes, it’s a musical.

The Ghost of Christmas Present is putting a modern twist on a beloved tale of holidays past.
Apple Original film “Spirited” stars Will Ferrell as the Ghost of Christmas Present who selects grumpy corporate executive Clint Briggs (Ryan Reynolds) as his newest project. However, Clint soon flips the script on the Christmas spirit and instead visits the spirit’s past, present, and future.
Inspired by Charles Dickens’ classic “A Christmas Carol,” the musical film also stars Octavia Spencer, Sunita Mani, Patrick Page, Joe Tippett, Marlow Barkley, and Jen Tullock. “Daddy’s Home” helmer Sean Anders directs from a script he co-wrote the script John Morris.
“Spirited” features original songs penned by “Dear Evan Hansen” and “La La Land” Oscar and Tony Award winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.

Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell team for a spirited take on A Christmas Carol in the first teaser for their upcoming holiday movie musical.
On Wednesday, Apple TV+ dropped a video preview for Spirited, which sees Reynolds starring as Clint Briggs, a Scrooge-like character visited on Christmas Eve by the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future.
Ferrell plays the Ghost of Christmas Present, who has the tables turned on him by Briggs, with the ghostly host ultimately reexamining his own past, present and future. The minute-and-a-half teaser is light on plot but does offer a glimpse of the story’s colorful and comedic take on the Charles Dickens classic, told from the perspective of the ghosts.

Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds are ringing in the holidays with a new musical. Apple TV+ has released the first teaser for “Spirited,” an upcoming Christmas movie that sees the two comedic actors teaming up — and squaring off in a tap-dancing battle.
Based on Charles Dickens’ classic novella “A Christmas Carol,” “Spirited” focuses on the Ghost of Christmas Present, portrayed in the original story as a Father Christmas-esque figure. In the (mostly) streaming film, Ferrell plays the spirit, who spends every year selecting a new corrupted person to be visited by him and the ghosts of Christmases Past and Future. However, when he chooses Clint Briggs (Reynolds) as the ghosts’ new project, he winds up getting the script flipped on him by the savvy businessman, who forces the spirit to go through his own past, present, and future.

Remakes, reboots, reimaginings. Hollywood is obsessed with the "re-ification" — yeah, I'm copyrighting that — of the industry, and whenever there's an opportunity to bring a franchise or original property back from the dead and spend a lot of unnecessary money on it, they do it. In that vein, Apple Original Films released the first teaser trailer for the upcoming holiday musical comedy, "Spirited," starring Will Ferrell, Ryan Reynolds, and Octavia Spencer.
In the sneak peek, we are introduced to Ferrell, a period ghost visiting Reynolds, a modern man who is more than surprised to find that the Charles Dickens novel has some truth to it. According to a press release, the film's synopsis reads:

When Jeffrey Katzenberg was a kid growing up in New York, his father Walter, “a very successful, man-about-town stockbroker,” always carried a wad of discreetly folded 100 bills. As he moved through the day, Walter would “quietly and stealthily” slip one to people in his orbit, whether it be “a doorman, a waiter, a valet, someone standing on the street with a sign about needing help, a maid, a taxi driver, a guitarist on a corner.”
One day, Jeffrey asked his father to explain the generous habit. “He asked me if I ever looked behind us. I said, ‘No,’ and he said, ‘Well, the next time we’re out together, please look back and tell me what you see,’” Jeffrey recalled from the stage Saturday night during the Motion Picture & Television Fund’s 100 Years of Hollywood: A Celebration of Service. “The next day, I...

Lorne Michaels continues to pull ahead with the most Emmy nominations in history for an individual. The “Saturday Night Live” creator and executive producer added a writing nomination to his tally in 2018, bringing his total to 82 — ahead of now-retired HBO documentary maven Sheila Nevins, who’s in second place with 76.
Nevins is still the person with the most Emmys won as an individual in history, at 30.
Speaking of Michaels, it was another stellar season for “Saturday Night Live,” which increased its total Emmy nominations to 252 (adding 21 more this year). But the big change in 2018 is for second place: The return of “Game of Thrones” netted 22 nominations for the HBO series, bringing its total haul over seven seasons to 129. That puts it ahead of long-time leader “ER,” which amassed 124 nominations over its 15 seasons, and now drops to third.

It's been almost two months since Beyoncé graced the world with her 2018 Coachella performance, and we're still feeling the magic.
