The Masters of the Universe toy and cartoon franchise got a live-action film adaptation back in 1987, with Dolph Lundgren taking on the role of lead hero He-Man, who defends the planet Eternia (and the rest of the universe) from evil forces, usually headed up by the villain Skeletor. To cut costs, the majority of the film is set on 1980s Earth, with He-Man and various other characters being transported from Eternia to Earth with the use of a “Cosmic Key.” Another live-action film adaptation of Masters of the Universe has been in development hell for a long time, but it looks like might finally escape into production, as Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Studios have announced that the movie will be receiving a theatrical release on June 5, 2026. Technically, summer in the northern hemisphere won’t begin until June 21st in 2026, but this is considered a summer release because summer starts early in the movie industry.

In July of 2023, Netflix announced that not only had they axed their plans to adapt Mattel's "Masters of the Universe" property into a live-action film, but they were doing so after spending over $30 million in development. Fans had been looking forward to a human He-Man flick since it was first announced in 2007, but the development with Sony Pictures in 2022 seemed like a sure bet. Then it was scrapped, but the project's move to Netflix made sense considering the streamer is home to "He-Man & Masters of the Universe," "Masters of the Universe: Revelation," and "She-Ra and the Princesses of Power." Unfortunately, Netflix dropped the project, which had already cast actor/dancer Kyle Allen to play He-Man/Prince Adam, and Mattel was left looking for a new home for the film. According to a recent report from Variety, that home has been found with Amazon and Travis Knight has been announced as the director.

“Barbie” is a cultural phenomenon, grossing nearly $1.5 billion and racking up eight Oscar nominations, all while launching scores of catchphrases and memes.
So it’s understandable that Mattel, the company behind the iconic doll, is looking to capitalize on its cinematic success by developing dozens of movies based on its games and toys. Moviegoers can look forward to Barney, Bob the Builder and He-Man hitting the big screen in the not-so-distant future.
But as Hollywood raids toy store shelves to feed its insatiable hunger for IP, it’s worth noting that when it comes to this type of film, for every “Barbie”-sized smash there’s a “Battleship”-like bomb. With that in mind, here are some of the movies that Mattel has in the works.

Here we go again. Another year is starting, which means it's time for the "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" movie to get yet another director. Like so many projects stuck in developing hell, it seems like practically every director currently working in Hollywood has, at some point, been involved in this film.
Now, Deadline reports that Travis Knight — the director of "Bumblebee" and "Kubo and the Two Strings," founder and CEO of Laika, and son of Nike co-founder Phil Knight — is the latest name to be attached to the long-in-development "Masters of the Universe" movie from Mattel. The report specifically says he is in "final negotiations" to direct, yet the deal hasn't closed just yet as other elements of the film are still being figured out. Nevertheless, this is exciting news, and brings the project one step closer to actually getting made.

Mattel’s Masters of the Universe movie hasn’t had the easiest path, but the long-in-development project has taken a big step forward as Deadline reports that Bumblebee director Travis Knight is in final negotiations to helm the movie.
Although Deadline cautions that the deal is still coming together, the report states that Knight was the only director in the mix to give an in-person presentation, which made him the top choice for the gig. Chris Butler will rewrite the script from the previous draft penned by David Callaham, Aaron and Adam Nee. The project was previously set up at Netflix, but the streaming service scrapped the project last summer. It was later reported that the movie could find a new home at Amazon MGM Studios, and according to Deadline, they’re now in final negotiations for the rights.

Warners Bros. has a Calamity on their hands.
The studio is in final negotiations to win the high-priced bidding war for Calamity Hustle, the action comedy that has Ryan Reynolds and Channing Tatum attached to star as wayward bothers.
Aaron and Adam Nee, the sibling team that was behind the 2022 sleeper hit The Lost City, wrote the script and are attached to direct.
Reynolds and Tatum are also producing via their respective banners, Maximum Effort and Free Association. Also producing is Kevin Walsh, who is currently in the awards season mix with Napoleon, as are the Nees via their banner Persons Attempting.
The package hit Hollywood after Thanksgiving and attracted only a select group of buyers — legacy studio Warners, and streaming goliaths Amazon and Netflix. The small pool of bidders was a result of the high-priced nature of the package. The actors were asking for a minimum of $20 million apiece,...

Exclusive: Warner Bros has won a week long auction for Calamity Hustle, the action comedy that will star Ryan Reynolds and Channing Tatum. Adam & Aaron Nee wrote the script, and they will direct. All the studios were in on this, but it came down to Amazon, Netflix and Warner Bros. Led by production chiefs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, Warner Bros stepped up for the kind of star-driven movie that fueled the studio’s fortunes back in the day.
The spec is likened in tone to the mismatched buddy actioner like Lethal Weapon, and the hope is to launch a franchise. Reynolds will play a cop who is estranged from his low level criminal brother (Tatum). They grew up on the wrong side of the tracks, and went in the opposite direction. When bro is implicated as part of a diamond heist, the cop must hunt him down before those he ripped off.

Ryan Reynolds and Channing Tatum are set to play wayward brothers in the upcoming action comedy ‘Calamity Hustle.’
Filmmaking brothers Aaron and Adam Nee are penning the script alongside taking over the director’s chair.
The logline, according to sources, concerns a down-on-his-luck former Los Angeles detective-turned-private investigator who, after being shaken down by a vicious crime lord, must track down his estranged brother who is responsible for interfering with a diamond heist.
Also in news – Andrew Koji, Richard Dormer and T’Nia Miller join the third series of ‘Gangs of London’
Reynolds and Tatum would star and produce via their respective banners, Maximum Effort and Free Association. Also producing is Kevin Walsh, who is currently in the awards season mix with Napoleon, as are the Nees via their banner Persons Attempting.
A bidding war is still underway for the project with Legacy studio Warner Bros. and streaming giants Amazon and Netflix amongst the highest bidders.

When you have a script that promises to team Ryan Reynolds and Channing Tatum , do you let it linger on a slush pile? Of course you don't! And so several companies, including Warner Bros., Amazon and Netflix are all submitting hefty bods to secure the new potential project. Calamity Hustle also has writer/directors Aaron and Adam Nee, who last worked together (and with Tatum) on :a[The Lost City]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/the-lost-city/' }.
The story, according to The Hollywood Reporter, concerns a down-on-his-luck former Los Angeles detective-turned-private investigator who, after being shaken down by a vicious crime lord, must track down his estranged brother who is responsible for interfering with a diamond heist.
Even if one of the companies secures the deal, this wouldn't immediately leap into production as the script reportedly requires a little polishing – and you know both stars will want to have input.

The rom-com was considered a dead genre when it began to consume itself, generating imitations that paled with each iteration, the predictability unable to overcome the star power. There have been a few sparks of life here and there, but as a film genre, it’s more moribund than not.
So, it’s a bit of a surprise to see one of its queens, Sandra Bullock, starring in a glossy, big budget rom-com after moving away from them for so long. Here, she’s a producer and star and at one point considered it dated given the seven years it was in development (never a good sign). She was right, it is dated and somewhat tired and still as predictable as one would imagine. Still, The Lost City is the first of its kind in a while and when it arrived in March, we could all have used something light and dairy.

After watching countless ads on television for Adam and Aaron Nee’s The Lost City, I was dreading the day when I’d eventually have to watch it. It looked like an absolutely awful, terribly written, and cameo-filled mess.

When Sandra Bullock was first approached by Paramount about producing and starring in The Lost City, an action-adventure romantic comedy that’s an ode to a disappearing genre, she said thanks, but no thanks. However, she couldn’t stop thinking about the project and went back to the studio with a fix: Reverse the roles and make the leading lady more heroic and bold, and infuse the leading man’s character with feminine sensitivities. It was a move Channing Tatum would welcome when joining the movie about a romance author and her cover model who set out on an adventure.

Aaron and Adam Nee's "The Lost City" recently made an unexpectedly large splash in theaters, earning over 170 million worldwide and generally pleasing critics. The film is about a romance author (Sandra Bullock) who only turned to writing archeology-themed smut when her interest and skill in genuine archeology was stymied by the death of her husband. Daniel Radcliffe plays a spoiled billionaire named Abigail Fairfax who understands that Bullock has written actual archeological clues into her novels kidnaps her to find a real-life treasure on a remote tropical island before the island's volcano erupts. Eyimofe (This Is My Desire) (Arie and Chuko Esiri)
Home is profoundly where the heartache is in Eyimofe (This Is My Desire), a finely wrought, wistful but mildly unsatisfying debut feature by Nigerian-raised, New York-educated twins Arie and Chuko Esiri. Tracking two resilient Lagos residents, in sequential order, united by one goal––to illegally migrate in search of a better life––the film occasionally feels akin to an immaculately put-together class assignment, over-mindful of the reaction of an end user or assessor, rather than a risky, personality-infused piece of art. – David K. The Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum-led comedy The Lost City is set to premiere on May 10 via Paramount+ in the United States and Canada. It’ll be available in Australia, the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and Italy later this year.
The film follows a reclusive romance novelist Loretta Sage (Bullock) on a book tour with her cover model Alan Caprison (Tatum), watching as the pair get swept up in a kidnapping attempt that lands them in a cutthroat jungle adventure. Thrust into an epic thrill ride through the jungle, the unlikely pair must work together to survive the elements and survive each other, to find the city’s fabled treasure before it’s lost forever.
Cast also includes Daniel Radcliffe, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Oscar Nuñez, Patti Harrison, and Bowen Yang.
At the box office, the March 25 premiere has grossed more than 162 million worldwide to date.

Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum headline this treasure-seeking adventure comedy that harks back to Romancing the Stone (1984). Co-directed by Adam and Aaron Nee, The Lost City is a delightful throwback to 1980s screwball escapism, delivering a sweet combination of nostalgic thrills and modern-day jokes.
Bullock plays popular author Loretta Sage, who’s grown tired of her series of saucy adventure-slash-romance novels, following the death of her archaeologist husband five years previously. She’s also grown tired of Alan (Channing Tatum), the sweet-but-dim model who poses as her novel series hero Dash on all her covers and is a constant presence on her book tours, to the evident pleasure of her audiences.

Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum’s screwball romantic comedy “The Lost City” collected $31 million at North American theaters over the weekend, a promising sign that Netflix hasn’t completely seized on the meet-cute market.
Of course, Paramount, which is behind “The Lost City,” did not rely only on positive reviews — or the tease of Tatum’s bare behind — to fuel ticket sales. The on-screen chemistry between Bullock and Tatum, who were inescapable on social media, billboards and in trailers while promoting the film, were key in getting audiences to cinemas. That’s a huge accomplishment in an era where familiar franchises have been dictating commercial success. At the same time, “The Lost City,” an original adventure that has been described as “Romancing the Stone” meets “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” indicates that romantic comedies haven’t entirely fallen out of favor with moviegoers.

The Jungle Lewk: The Brothers Nee Conjure Expected Charm in Casual Comedy
For their third feature, brothers Aaron and Adam Nee concoct something of studio anomaly with the action rom-com throwback The Lost City, featuring Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum. Although not as exceptional as the sum of its parts, there’s much to enjoy in this semi screwball comedy about a romantic fiction writer who gets to experience a bit of the romance she’s come to regard as fantastical twaddle. Some standout gags (including the best use of leeches since maybe Stand By Me) and an exceptional supporting turn from Brad Pitt go a long way in smoothing over a banality never far from running amok, but for fans of its leads or a sentiment for a certain sense of zany charm, there’s more than enough enjoyment to pass the time.…...

“The Lost City,” Paramount’s comedy and romance adventure film starring Sandra Bullock, Channing Tatum and Daniel Radcliffe, earned $2.5 million in box office preview screenings Thursday that began at 4 p.m. from approximately 3,400 screens. It opens on 4,248 screens this weekend.
While the male, under-35 crowd has of late been the only group to drive the box office, Paramount is hoping the star-studded “The Lost City” can attract female audiences as well and give a jolt to movie theaters. The film is projected by the studio for an opening between $20-23 million, with independent trackers saying it could reach $30 million against a reported budget of $70 million. The film likewise hopes that it can top “The Batman” as Warner Bros. and DC’s superhero movie now enters its fourth week in theaters at #1.

The Lost City began filming in the jungles of the Dominican Republic in May 2021. That is less than a year ago. But considering how different the world was even 10 months back, it may as well have been a lifetime for star, producer, and overall Lost City champion, Sandra Bullock. It’s easy to forget now, but the vaccine rollout was still in its early fitful days during the movie’s pre-production phase, and until those cameras rolled the process was its own desperate escape.
“You just shot me back trying to find a vaccine,” Bullock says when we mention the remarkable time period that The Lost City was made during. “I mean, I was running around trying to find one. They were not available. By the time we had gotten there for the scout, they were becoming more available, but I felt like I was on the black market, you know?...

The filmmakers also discuss the grueling shooting environments for the cast and crew and how they feared for Tatum and Bullock's safety. Watch for more fun behind-the-scenes revelations.

Without yelling at the clouds too loudly, let me just say: the theatrical experience is rough out there. There are still multiple screens dedicated to a certain web-slinging behemoth at any given cineplex. It’s an ever-present reminder that commerce is thriving, and movies for adults are, well, not. The rom-com, and studio comedies in general, have been all but relegated to streaming for some time now, that is if they aren’t chunked up into eight hour-long episodes as content fodder. It’s a hostile environment for a big-budget Sandra Bullock romance vehicle, but here we are. Despite those odds, The Lost City is a respite, an oasis, for anyone just looking to get away.

The Batman crossed $300 million domestic on Sunday and $600 million worldwide earlier this week, and it will soon fly past the grosses of Batman v Superman ($330 million) and Joker ($335 million) to become the third highest grossing Batman film domestically behind The Dark Knight ($535 million) and The Dark Knight Rises ($448 million). The Robert Pattinson starring reboot doesn’t seem likely to pass Tdkr, but ending up as the biggest non-Nolan Batman film is a nice feather in its cap, as is being the second biggest pandemic-era film. There has been little else going on at the box office this month, but after three weeks of total dominance, The Batman finally faces a formidable box office challenger this weekend.

After three weeks atop domestic box office charts, “The Batman” will face competition from a nearly endangered Hollywood species: movie stars.
At a time when familiar franchises, not big-name talent, have been dictating commercial success, Paramount is banking on the combined wattage of Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum to lure audiences to “The Lost City,” a screwball romantic comedy that opens in theaters this weekend and harkens back to a genre that has mostly fallen out of favor with moviegoers.
Buoyed by strong reviews and A-list actors, including a cameo from Brad Pitt and villainous turn from Daniel Radcliffe, “The Lost City” is expected to earn a promising $20 million in its opening weekend. Those ticket sales would put the film in an extremely close race against “The Batman” for first place.

When Aaron and Adam Nee’s “The Lost City” debuts in theaters next week, it’ll be one of the last chances for moviegoers to see Sandra Bullock in a leading role on screen – at least for a while.
In an interview with Tracy Smith of CBS Sunday Morning, Bullock said she was taking a break. “I can be creative, I can be part of a community, but right now, work in front of the camera needs to take a pause,” the former Best Actress winner said.
As for when she will make her acting comeback down the road? Bullock doesn’t have an exact answer. “Until I don’t feel like I feel now when I’m in front of a camera,” she said, citing a hope to spend more time with her family.

Our wildest dreams can be achieved with the smallest of stepping stones. In an interview with "The Lost City" directors Aaron and Adam Nee at SXSW conducted by /Film's Jacob Hall, the filmmaking duo revealed they made a "Transformers" short film to pitch themselves for 2018's "Bumblebee." While the directors did not end up working on the project, which was ultimately directed by Travis Knight, the sweet, simple-yet-powerful nature of the short allowed them to carve a path towards success, culminating in the making of "The Lost City," which premiered on SXSW on March 12, 2022.

Aaron and Adam Nee like movies. That much is clear when you speak with them. Like so many moviemakers (and film writers) of a certain generation, they grew up with Spielberg and Zemeckis, and still see that special Amblin magic as the kind of high watermark worth pursuing.
The brother filmmaking duo have made the leap to big studio movies with "The Lost City," an adventure comedy starring a bunch of movie stars (Sandra Bullock! Channing Tatum! Daniel Radcliffe!), and despite their indie roots, they make it clear this was part of the plan all along.

The Lost City, directed by Aaron and Adam Nee and written by Oren Uziel, Dana Fox and Adam Nee, comes at the right time to make audiences laugh. I mean, it’s formulaic, but with its slapstick humor and smoldering leads Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum, the film is a deserved addition to the treasure-hunting adventure film genre.
Loretta Sage (Bullock) is an author of romance novels who just finished a new story. She speaks of adventures, buried treasure, and lost, ancient cities in her books while deciphering dead languages. Since her husband died, she lives as a recluse while harping on the past. Her publicist Beth (Da’Vine Joy Randolph) arranges a book tour featuring the male model representing Dash, a character in her book. His real name is Alan (Tatum), and they do not get along.
Dressed as a Solid Gold dancer, Loretta’s first stop on tour is a disaster.

"I have the power!" Yes, a gentle reminder that a new "Masters of the Universe" live-action film is still in the works. In an interview with "The Lost City" directors Aaron and Adam Nee at SXSW conducted by /Film's Jacob Hall, the filmmaking duo revealed that their upcoming "Masters of the Universe" movie will be a "wild and crazy" adaptation that will be similar in tone to Taika Waititi's "Thor: Ragnarok." This is great news for He-Man fans, especially ones who grew up watching the original and collected their fair share of well-worn vintage He-Man toys.

At first glance, “The Lost City” has all the hallmarks of “Romancing the Stone” repackaged for millennials and Zoomers.
We get Sandra Bullock assuming the Kathleen Turner role as a romance novelist who holds the key to the whereabouts of a remote hidden treasure. Daniel Radcliffe steps into the Danny DeVito part, albeit with more urbanity, as the novelist’s ruthless kidnapper with a passing Napoleon complex, who’s seeking said treasure. And Brad Pitt fills in for Michael Douglas as a raffish man of adventure who comes to the novelist’s rescue — though here in a reduced capacity.
That’s a good thing because Channing Tatum is the one who actually shares top billing with Bullock, and his Fabio-esque character is an original creation that helps the new film steer clear of a potential copyright claim.

Before the world was turned upside down by a global pandemic, Sandra Bullock and Liza Chasin were on the hunt for hidden gold. A script that had been sitting on a shelf for seven long years had just come into their possession. And while not perfect, something shiny and vital was glittering under the surface.
“We knew there was a reason it was sitting on a shelf,” Bullock says. Then came the lightbulb moment. “Oh my God, I see it! I see it! I know what it should be,” she declares. “Then you get really excited, then you panic because you’re absolutely convinced that there are no writers out there that can then bring it to the level we had in our head.”
Luckily for star and producer Bullock and co-producer Liza Chasin, that writer did in fact exist, and her name is Dana Fox. Working on the Oren Uziel script,...
