Stuart Hutchinson studied at the Royal Academy of Music (London),
graduating with six prizes, diplomas and an Honours Degree, later
continuing his studies with Leonard Bernstein and Sir John Pritchard
while working as their assistant. His wide experience since has
encompassed opera, ballet, music-theatre and the concert repertoire. He
was honoured in 1981 by the Incorporated Society of Musicians with
their Young Artist Award. Stuart Hutchinson has held the posts of Head
of Music and Chorus Master for the Buxton International Opera Festival,
Dublin Grand Opera and Wexford Festival Opera. He has also worked on
the music-staff of the English National Opera, Opera North, Opera 80,
New Sadler's Wells Opera and the Wagner Society. Stuart has worked in
association with many eminent directors and choreographers including
Sir Trevor Nunn, Jonathan Miller, David Pountney, Ian Judge, Peter
Ustinov, Francesca Zambello, Deborah Warner, George Abbott, George
Ballanchine, Gillian Lynne, Donald Saddler and Sir Kenneth MacMillan.
For English National Opera he has conducted Carmen; for Scottish Opera
Weill's The Threepenny Opera; in Berlin, the Houston Grand Opera
production of Weill's Street Scene; for the London International Opera
Festival La Rappresentazione di Anima e di Corpo (Cavalieri) and the
British premiere of Dominick Argento's Postcard From Morocco; he
conducted the world premiere of Stephen Oliver's opera Tables Meet
(Royal Festival Hall); for New Sadler's Wells Opera Ian Judge's
production of Bitter Sweet and The Mikado; as guest conductor at the
Royal Academy of Music he conducted Cimarosa's Il Matrimonio Segreto.
From 1986 to 1990 he held the post of Music Director to Morley Opera,
for whom he conducted the standard repertoire and notable productions
of Britten's Paul Bunyan, Les Deux Journees (Cherubini), Weill's The
Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny (UK premiere of the complete
work), Haydn's Il Mondo della Luna and Frank Martin's Le Vin Herbe
(Martin centenary production). As Guest Musical Director to Scottish
Ballet he has conducted productions of Giselle, I Vespri Siciliani,
Ballanchine's Concerto Barocco and the contemporary ballet Troy Game.
He has also conducted for the Russian prima ballerinas Natalia Makarova
and Galina Panova. Extensive music-theatre engagements include
conducting the world premiere production of Lloyd Webber's Aspects of
Love, the award winning West End production of On Your Toes (featuring
the Ballanchine ballets - La Princesse Zenobia and Slaughter on Tenth
Avenue), Oliver! (NYMT/Royal Opera/Sadler's Wells Theatre), the world
premiere of Carl Davis' operetta Alice in Wonderland (Lyric Theatre,
Hammersmith) and Salad Days (Fortieth Anniversary production directed
by Ned Sherrin). Regional theatre credits as Musical
Director/Orchestrator number many classic musicals including Showboat,
Carousel, Sweeney Todd, West Side Story, The Sound of Music and My Fair
Lady. As Musical Director for Jonathan Miller's company at the Old Vic
Theatre productions included The Tempest and King Lear - for which he
composed the score. For the Cambridge Theatre Company the premiere of
Ilona Sekacz' score for Les Enfants du Paradis. He has also worked on
several productions for the Royal Shakespeare Company, including Les
Liaisons Dangereuses (West End). Stuart has composed, arranged and
recorded the music for twenty BBC Radio plays, including When We Are
Married (starring Alan Bennett and Brenda Blethyn), the twelve-part
serialisation of Little Women and Good Wives, The Ceremony Of Innocence
(music by Britten, with Simon Russell-Beale) and Eroica (music by
Beethoven, with Alex Jennings); he also contributed to the BBC TV drama
Real Women. Apart from his work as a conductor Stuart is in demand as
accompanist and coach to many leading British and International singers
