Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’ s All-Star Superman is described as the finest salute to Silver Age ever to be written, embracing all the silliness and heart found in the Mort Weisinger-edited run of the Superman family of titles. Distilled down into a feature animated film, the story remains the same, just tighter.
The 2011 Warner Home Entertainment release is back, making its 4K Ultra HD debut. I liked it when first released, and the new edition is sharper and crisper, the 2060p transfer is excellent. Is it enough to upgrade? That’s up to you, but it belongs in your home video library in one form or another.
The strength in the adaptation has everything to do with the late Dwayne McDuffie’s screen adaptation, aided and enhanced by a wonderful score by composer Christopher Drake
The DTS-hd 5.1 Master Audio track is the same as the 2011 release and sounds just fine.

Burbank, CA – One of the Man of Steel’s most personal tales in DC history – from the mind of comics icon Grant Morrison, and produced under the expert oversight of animation legends Bruce Timm and Dwayne McDuffie – All-Star Superman will be available to own on 4K Ultra HD for the very first time on April 18, 2023 from Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment.
Grant Morrison’s beloved, Eisner Award-winning vision of Superman’s heroic final days on Earth is brought to exquisite, animated life in All-Star Superman. The film begins as the Man of Steel rescues an ill-fated mission to the Sun (sabotaged by Lex Luthor) but, in the process, is oversaturated by radiation – which accelerates his cell degeneration. Sensing even he will be unable to cheat death, Superman ventures into new realms – finally revealing his secret to Lois, confronting Lex Luthor’s perspective of humanity, and attempting to ensure Earth’s...

Two decades after making his debut with werewolf war movie “Dog Soldiers,” Neil Marshall offers another spin on military-vs.-monsters action in “The Lair,” a semi-return to form that’s energetic if uninspired and increasingly silly. Nonetheless, it represents a bit of a rebound after the disasters of last year’s “The Reckoning” and an unhappy “Hellboy” reboot he disowned. This first issue from Scarlett Prods., the company he founded with star, co-writer and executive producer Charlotte Kirk, gets released by Rlje Films to limited U.S. theaters as well as VOD and digital Oct. 28. Launch on multi-territory genre streaming platform Shudder is planned for early next year.

Following the misfire of 2019’s “Hellboy” reboot, “The Descent” director Neil Marshall returns to his traditional horror roots with “The Reckoning,” an uneven melodrama about an innocent young widow accused of witchcraft during the Great Plague of London, 1665. Striving to be a rousing tale of female empowerment in the face of brutal patriarchy and religious extremism, “The Reckoning” has some powerful moments but relies too heavily on fantasy sequences to deliver scares, and its credibility is significantly compromised by the heroine consistently emerging from extreme torture sessions with barely a hair out of place or a smudge on her makeup. Dedicated horror hounds will be the main takers when this well-produced item hits U.S. theaters and VOD on February 5.
A world apart from arty contemporary folk-horrors such as “The Witch” and “Hagazussa: A Heathen’s Curse,” Marshall’s new film is more closely related to hellfire European exploitation titles of...

The Reckoning greets us with the image of a mass grave. It’s England in 1665, the Great Plague has plunged the country into fear, paranoia, and sickness. The cause of “the sickness,” as they call it, is unknown to them, but they must blame something. And like all who follow the Christian doctrine, they blame the Devil and those who represent him. Lucifer’s acolytes, in their mind, are witches. While witch trials during this time were beginning to decline, “Witch Finders” kept this murder of innocent women rampant. Writer-director Neil Marshall explores this dark time in history and a true tale of horrors in his new, epic film. An examination of the trauma and pain caused by these trials that the film estimates killed 500,000 women across continents.

I think it’s safe to say at this point that most people have a pretty firm opinion about the films of Kevin Smith, as well as the filmmaker himself. Personally, I think he’s a hoot and actually is one of my favorite artists out there. This week, Smith unleashes Yoga Hosers into the world after a debut earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival. As someone who enjoys his various podcasts, hearing the idea sort of birthed during one, much like with Tusk, had me eager to see it. Frankly, it doesn’t disappoint, though I freely admit this won’t be for everyone. It’s a strange beast, but kind of a perfect fit for Smith’s current interests at this point in his career. Again, the movie is, like the aforementioned Tusk, based off of a conversation Smith had with Scott Mosier on SModcast, one of his podcasts.

Aleph Records will release the Tales Of Halloween – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack exclusively on iTunes on October 23, 2015.

The film features main titles by legendary composer Lalo Schifrin (The Amityville Horror), whose son Ryan Schifrin directed one of the segments.

To celebrate the October 16th release of the horror anthology Tales of Halloween, Daily Dead spoke to the filmmakers behind the movie to discuss the project, their individual contributions and more.
Best known for his 2006 debut feature, Abominable, Ryan Schifrin wrote and directed “The Ransom of Rusty Rex,” his segment of Tales of Halloween in which two kidnapping thieves get more than they bargained for on their latest job. Schifrin (whose legendary father, composer Lalo Schifrin, contributes a wonderful theme for the anthology), spoke with Daily Dead about working with one his heroes, finding the right tone and his segment’s classical literary roots.
There's an O. Henry story that clearly served as inspiration for your segment, "The Ransom of Rusty Rex." What was it that inspired you to draw from that story while writing your piece?

Fantastic Fest is known for bringing out the party animals. So it seems only appropriate to kick-off the 10th Anniversary of this great and wild festival with an animal film unlike anything you’ll probably see this year. Tusk brought out the leader of the pack himself, Kevin Smith, on Thursday night for its red carpet premiere in Austin. Smith greeted fans and made funny faces for the line of photographers. He sported his now signature look – an oversized hockey jersey advertising his “Fatman on Batman” podcast. Also in attendance was actor Justin Long, composer Christopher Drake, and Alamo Drafthouse CEO and Fantastic Fest co-founder Tim League.
The crowd was its usual excited self as anticipation for this year has been sky high. This year seems to signal a return to a more horror-centric lineup given the number of films in the specific genre. Kicking things off with Tusk – a bizarre,...

There are a number of surprises built into Kevin Smith's "Tusk," not the least of which is that it is, all things considered, eminently watchable. That's not faint praise, either. This is in many ways a ridiculous film, and well aware of itself. There are moments where you can practically hear Smith off-camera laughing at not just what's in front of the camera but also what's going to happen in the theater when people watch it. There is a glee to the filmmaking that is matched by a greater sense of control than I've seen from Smith before, and while I think the film is wildly uneven at times, I think that's also the point. I've always said that I grade a film based on how well I think it accomplishes what the filmmaker is trying to do, and in this case, I'd say Smith is fairly on his game.

So much for retirement. Filmmaker Kevin Smith has confirmed his plan to give up filmmaking after "Clerks III" has gone out the window. Instead he's focusing on both that last chapter in the "Askewniverse" along with a new project entitled "Helena Handbag".
Smith talked about his future plans in a lengthy Facebook post, here is a shortened version:
"[F]rom now until I drop dead, I'm only ever gonna make a flick that only I would/could ever make. Or 'Chasing Amy'. Or 'Dogma'. Or 'Red State'. Or 'Clerks II'. Or 'Mallrats'. Or 'Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back'.

The second part of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns demonstrates how the world has changed since the graphic novel source material was published in 1986. Frank Miller’s reinvention of Batman was also his personal reaction to the conservative, jingoistic United States of America of the decade. President Ronald Reagan was a folksy president, good with a quip, and saw the world in stark black and white terms, which was feeling wrong in the final years of the Cold War. Miller also questioned all authority figures from know-it-all doctors who loved to hear themselves on the growing number of vapid talk shows to the unformed law-enforcement representatives who fired first and then questioned orders. While some of this was evident in part one, which was released last fall, this installment, out on Tuesday, really shines a spotlight on the themes.

Batman: Under the Red Hood is the latest DC Comics animated film from Warner Premiere and WB Animation. The film is based on two well known Batman comic book stories: the groundbreaking 1980′s arc A Death in the Family and the controversial 2005 arc Under the Hood. The former was significant because it featured the murder of Jason Todd—the second Robin—at the hands of the Joker; while the latter destroyed the lasting impact of Jason’s loss by bringing him back from the dead in a rather ridiculous and convoluted manner. Batman: Under the Red Hood succeeds for the most part, bridging these two tales in a way that is both satisfying and action packed, while leaving an obscene amount of essentially useless continuity safely out of the picture.
