Simon Baker, Yael Stone, Josh Lawson and newcomer Julia Savage are among the key cast of director Del Kathryn Barton’s debut feature Blaze (formerly Puff), which recently wrapped shooting in Sydney.
Barton, a dual Archibald prize winner, wrote the script with Huna Amweero (Jade of Death), with the work inspired by Barton’s painting ‘sing blood-wings sing’, which was in turn inspired by Peter Paul and Mary song ‘Puff, the Magic Dragon’.
A hybrid work of live-action, VFX and animation, Blaze sees Savage plays a young girl who accidentally witnesses a woman being violently attacked, leaving her catatonic with shock and struggling to make sense of what she saw.
She retreats into imaginary worlds, where Zephyr, the shimmering magic dragon who has been her companion since childhood, allows her to activate her own rage and ultimately find renewal.
Also starring are Morgan Davies, Bernie Van Tiel, Remy Hii, John Waters,...

Damion Hunter in ‘Last Ark.’
For every actor who works consistently and achieves varying degrees of success in the screen industry, there are many more, like Damion Hunter.
Since graduating from Waapa in 1995 and Nida in 1998, the Indigenous actor has appeared in episodes of numerous series including Harrow, Redfern Now, Supernova, Farscape and All Saints as well as the miniseries Devil’s Dust and movies Wyrmwood and Around the Block.
Not enough, however, to sustain a viable career, so he retrained as a high school teacher in 2012 after working as a teacher’s aide in 2009.
He now teaches English and history at a college near his home in the Northern Rivers of Nsw and he has a sideline as a hip hop artist, but he has not abandoned acting.
His latest role is in Michael Joy’s movie Smoke Between Trees, which stars Tiriel Mora as Mathew Higgins, a middle-class...

There are smatterings of humor in Pacific Heat – an animated cop spoof created by Aussie outlet Working Dog for Netflix, and incorporating the voice talents of Rob Sitch, Santo Cilauro, Rebecca Massey, Lucia Mastrantone, and Tom Gleisner – that hint at the devotedly wacky, willingly meta send-up of adult animation as a genre that a show like it could one day become.
In one scene, a coarsely caricatured Asian drug lord (dubbed Mr. Bang Choi, naturally) is menacing the four members of the titular Pacific Heat special unit through a borderline-indecipherable accent, when his dialogue starts to appear at the bottom of the screen. His eyes flickering down, he yells, “Are you putting subtitles on me?” The villain seethes beside an army of gun-toting henchmen as an officer blithely reassures, “Just the key verbs.”
The joke lands but, unfortunately, such fourth-wall-breaking wisecracks are a...

After their successful collaboration on Backyard Ashes, the producers and Umbrella Entertainment are teaming up on another sports-themed comedy with a topical, dramatic twist.
Set in the fictional country town Bodgy Creek, The Merger will follow a struggling Afl club which enlists newly-settled asylum seekers to make up the numbers in a desperate effort to break a 27-game losing streak.
The screenplay by Damian Callinan is adapted from his one-man stage show which toured Australia and was nominated for a Barry award at the Melbourne Comedy Festival in 2010.
Callinan, who will play the team.s captain coach in the film, delighted attendees at last week.s Australian International Movie Convention, with routines from the show.
Mark Grentell will direct and produce with Callinan and Anne Robinson. Grentell tells If, .It.s a comedy but there are some intense and dramatic scenes dealing with racism, asylum seekers and life in a small town.

Riding high on the unexpected success of his debut film Backyard Ashes, writer- director Mark Grentell next plans to tackle a comedy about a struggling Aussie Rules team in a bush town.
The film is based on The Merger, Damian Callinan.s one-man show in which he played all the characters. Callinan is set to play the lead, Troy Carrington, the coach of the fictitious Bodgy Creek Roosters Football Club.
Desperately short of men and faced with the prospect of the team folding or merging with its arch rivals, Troy has the bright idea of recruiting players from the local asylum seekers. refuge centre.
.It.s very funny,. says Grentell, who cast Callinan as Spock in Backyard Ashes, the comedy set in Wagga Wagga about two neighbours who settle their differences with a bizarre game of backyard cricket, featuring Felix Williamson, John Wood, Andrew S. Gilbert and Rebecca Massey.

Are Australian audiences getting soft and avoiding darker and more confronting, challenging material?
That.s the theory of one Australian distributor as he surveyed last weekend.s openings of The Counselor, Insidious: Chapter 2, Mr Pip and Fruitvale Station.
Perhaps giving weight to his theory, Aussie comedy Backyard Ashes had a boisterous opening at just four screens in regional areas.
Ridley Scott.s The Counselor opened with $1.2 million which, pro-rata, is rather better than its lousy $US7.8 million debut in the Us. Some critics admired the Cormac McCarthy-scripted thriller about a respected lawyer.s disastrous involvement with a Mexican drug deal, starring Michael Fassbender, Javier Bardem, Penélope Cruz, Brad Pitt and Cameron Diaz.
But maybe audiences were deterred by the reviews which spoke of the sordid setting, dark-hearted individuals behaving badly, bloodshed and leaden dialogue.
James Wan.s haunted house sequel again featuring Rose Byrne and Patrick Wilson took $527,000 on 118 locations.

Umbrella Entertainment is turning the conventional notion of theatrical distribution on its head with Backyard Ashes, an Aussie comedy about two neighbours who settle their differences with a bizarre game of backyard cricket.
The release plan rules out booking the film into any capital city and the distributor is doing its best to keep it away from critics, perhaps fearing reviews that might raise the spectre of cricket-themed misfire Save Your Legs!
The self-funded film from first-time director Mark Grentell will premiere on November 6 at the Forum 6 Cinemas in Wagga Wagga, where it was shot largely in the backyard of Mark.s mother.s house.
The filmmakers and key cast will fly in for the premiere on a helicopter owned by a mate of Mark.s which was used to film aerial shots of the town in the opening sequence.

Hollyoaks' Silas plot has been voted the 'Best Soap Storyline' of 2011 in Digital Spy's end-of-year reader poll. The dark tale, which saw the serial killer claim four victims in the village, triumphed in the survey of our 12 million monthly users. Silas, played by Jeff Rawle, murdered India Longford (Beth Kingston), Rebecca Massey (Daisy Turner), Rae Wilson (Alice Barlow) and his own daughter Heidi Costello (Kim Tiddy) during his reign of terror. The evil grandfather also spent months tormenting nurse Lynsey Nolan (Karen Hassan), who was the only person to suspect him. Fans finally saw Silas get his comeuppance last month, when the police realised that he was responsible for the village's sinister (more)...

Hollyoaks star Jeff Rawle has revealed that he will be thrilled if his dark storyline helps to encourage young people to stay safe on the internet. The actor has spent almost a year in the role of evil Silas Blissett, who has murdered India Longford, Rebecca Massey and Rae Wilson since making his debut on screen last December. Silas's sinister antics have often stemmed from online chatrooms, where he has lured girls to meet him by using a variety of aliases. Rawle told Live With Gabby today: "There is a serious backstory to it, and that's why I went into the show in a sense - when they explained how they were going to do it. It was about internet dating and the dangers, especially among young students. "Children are quite heavily protected, and when they're out of that environment, suddenly they can become prey to people who are extremely...

Hollyoaks star Jeff Rawle has revealed that he is delighted to be playing such a sinister character on the soap. The actor has spent nearly a year in the role of serial killer Silas Blissett, who has secretly caused terror in the village over the past few months. Since December, viewers have seen Silas murder India Longford, Rebecca Massey and Rae Wilson. He has also played mind games with Lynsey Nolan, who has suspected him of being the killer for months. Rawle told Inside Soap: "In my entire career, this is the first time I've played a murderer. I tend to be cast as likeable losers - the victim, not the killer. I recently did a Midsomer Murders and met an untimely end in that. I'm much more used to being murdered!" Discussing (more)...

Hollyoaks star Bronagh Waugh has claimed that she and her fellow cast members are in the dark over the future of the soap's ongoing serial killer storyline. Since Christmas, viewers have seen sinister Silas Blissett (Jeff Rawle) prove a dangerous presence in the village - murdering innocent student India Longford and con artist Rebecca Massey. Speaking to Pa about the plot's future, Waugh commented: "All we know, to avoid leaks, is that he will strike again - someone is going and none of us know who it might be. "We (more)...
