Editor’s note: The following article contains spoilers for Marvel’s “Echo” on Disney+.
Charlie Cox’s Daredevil appears in the very first episode of “Echo” on Disney+, and he’s instantly forgettable.
That’s not an indictment of the character Cox originated in “Marvel’s Daredevil” on Netflix, now resurrected for the MCU, but an endorsement of the scene around him; a one-shot combat sequence in which Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) eventually kills one of her opponents and marks Daredevil as an enemy.
The scene is striking enough on-screen, but also a key moment in how various teams intent on getting “Echo” right came together — the writing, the stunts, the direction, and an overarching sensitivity to a deaf character’s point of view.
“Echo” is the rare TV series with an Indigenous lead, the first who is also deaf, the first Marvel series to release a whole season at once,...

Based on the hit podcast, Prime Video debuted the Amazon Original series “The Horror of Dolores Roach” this past July, and we’ve learned the series has been cancelled.
After just one season, “The Horror of Dolores Roach” is no more at Prime Video.
Justina Machado starred in the first season of “Dolores Roach.”
The eight-episode, half-hour series is a contemporary Sweeney Todd-inspired tale, a macabre urban legend of love, betrayal, weed, gentrification, cannibalism, and survival of the fittest.
In the series, “Dolores Roach is released from prison after 16 years and returns to a severely gentrified Washington Heights with $200 and the clothes on her back. Her boyfriend missing, her family long gone, Dolores reunites with an old stoner buddy, Luis, who gives her room and board and lets her give massages for cash in the basement under his dilapidated storefront, Empanada Loca, the only remnant of her former life.

The cancelations continue ahead of the holiday weekend.
Amazon has axed a trio of scripted series from its Prime Video service: The Horror of Dolores Roach, Harlan Coben’s Shelter, and With Love are all ending.
The Horror of Dolores Roach and Harlan Coben’s Shelter ran for one season, while With Love is ending after two seasons.
They are the latest cancelations at the streamer over the last few months following shows such as The Peripheral and A League of Their Own, which had both been renewed before those decisions were reversed.

While it’s clear that broadcasters and streamers are canceling a slew of shows coming out of the writers and actors strikes, a drastic reduction of original scripted series has been on the cards for some time as Hollywood continues to cut costs.

“The Horror of Dolores Roach” is the kind of show that tries to do everything at once instead of doing one thing well. Is it a horror show? Is it a comedy? Is it a riff on “Sweeney Todd”? Is it a character study? Is it camp? Is it commentary? Yes, it’s all these things, and yes, other series have lumped many-a-genre and multiple goals into successful ongoing stories, but that first requires identifying what elements work well together.
Good horror isn’t just gore. Good comedy is, well, pretty subjective. But “Sweeney Todd” isn’t just about cannibalism, camp is earned, and commentary takes prolonged focus. The Amazon Prime Video series, adapted by creator, writer, and executive producer Aaron Mark from his one-woman play (“Empanada Loca”) and subsequent podcast (“The Horror of Dolores Roach”), never cooks any one ingredient long enough for its flavor to stand out in an overstuffed stew.

The Amazon Original based on the Spotify podcast of the same name and created by Aaron Mark’s one-woman play Empanada Loca, is a contemporary Sweeney Toddi-inspired story. Machado plays Dolores Roach, a woman just released after an unjust 16-year prison sentence, and she returns to a gentrified Washington Heights.
Dolores reunites with an old stoner friend, Luis (Alejandro Hernández), who lets her live and work as a masseuse in the basement under his empanada shop. When the promise of her newfound stability is quickly threatened, “Magic Hands” Dolores is driven to shocking extremes to survive.
Mark created, wrote, and directed the original podcast and penned the series’ pilot script.

The show started as a podcast from Gimlet Media, which announced its adaptation in September. Amazon ordered the story to series in February, according to Variety.
Lauper joins Justina Machado, who will portray Dolores Roach, as well as Alejandro Hernandez, who plays Luis, Roach’s partner in crime. Marc Maron joined the show in June 2022 to play Gideon Pearlman, Roach’s landlord.

The 2022 Out Loud List was selected from among hundreds of nominations submitted from across the industry and evaluated based on criteria including the strength of the writer’s voice, viability of the project to be sold in today’s marketplace, and conceptual freshness. When director Jon M. Chu needed to build the sets for Apple TV’s “Home Before Dark” he called on longtime collaborator Nelson Coates.
The show is inspired by the real-life story of Hidle Lysiak, the young journalist who stumbles across a crime scene and scoops the town paper on a murder investigation. Lysiak’s story took place in a small town in Pennslyvania, but the show was shot in Vancouver.

Writers Hillary Cunin, Dana Fox and Dara Resnik had initially envisioned a small town with a lake, but despite scouting, the team couldn’t find one. Coates show them the town of Steveston. “It had fisheries and everyone got excited when I explained...

In a scene toward the end of Apple TV+’s latest, “Home Before Dark,” the show’s heroine — Hilde Lisko, a 9-year-old investigative journalist with little patience for liars and secrets — gets up on a cafeteria table and stares down a classmate she had a run-in with earlier in the episode.
“You asked who cares about the truth,” she says, defiant. “I do. Because if the truth doesn’t matter, nothing ever will.”
Hilde’s speech, delivered with verve by “The Florida Project” breakout Brooklynn Prince, is met with a smattering of applause — followed quickly by a fistful of cafeteria meat to the face, because “Home Before Dark” takes more than a few cues from classic 1980s coming-of-age films like “E.T.” and “Stand By Me.”
Maybe Hilde’s classmates don’t share her passion for the truth. Or maybe they just care about food fights more than facts, because, you know,...

Anonymous Content producer Joy Gorman Wettels was driving her daughter to school one morning in 2018 when she got word that the Season 2 premiere of “13 Reasons Why,” the Netflix series she executive produced, would have to be canceled, following a shooting at a high school in Santa Fe. Her daughter, then just a kindergartner, unwittingly overheard the whole call — including news of the shooting.
The enormities of parenting in this age — amid what often feels like a steady drumbeat of grim news in the headlines — are not lost on Gorman Wettels. Children have to deal with so much, so early. But instead of shielding them from the realities of the world, she believes we should equip the next generation with the emotional tools they need to get through it.
“These kids have lockdown drills and walkouts in elementary school,” she tells Variety. “And I actually think helicopter parenting is not helping them,...

Director Jon M. Chu has built his career making mostly bright, poppy entertainment like Step Up 3D, Jem and the Holograms, Crazy Rich Asians, and the upcoming In the Heights. But he’s dipping into darker territory in Home Before Dark, a new AppleTV+ drama which hails from creators/showrunners Dana Fox (New Girl) and Dara Resnik […]

Hilde Lisko is a budding journalist and a fourth-grader and, thanks to the incredible talent of Brooklyn Prince (The Florida Project), both are completely believable.
As we find out early in Home Before Dark Season 1 Episode 1, Hilde is a force to be reckoned with. The fact that this force comes in the package of a nine-year-old girl makes Home Before Dark equal measures intriguing, empowering, and fun.
I must admit, I felt a connection to Hilde. We’re both writers, albeit I’m far from 9-years-old.
We both hate it when people use the term, “young lady” because even at the ripe old age of five I thought it sounded condescending.
Mayor Fife: I don’t like your tone, young lady. You have no idea what you’re getting into.
Hilde: I feel like being called a young lady should be a compliment but it never sounds like it is.

Some of our greatest detectives have been children, from Encyclopedia Brown to Nancy Drew. Okay, those ones are fictional but they no doubt set the stage for Dana Fox and Dara Resnik’s new series, “Home Before Dark.” Based on the life of real child journalist Hilde Lysiak, the new series for Apple TV+ is equal parts biopic, old-school mystery, and classic children’s programming that will easily draw comparisons to the likes of “Ghostwriter” and “Eerie Indiana.”
“Florida Project” star Brooklynn Prince plays the series’ take on Hilde, changing her last name to Lisko for reasons that don’t feel clear. Her father, Matt (Jim Sturgess) is a former investigative journalist in New York who, after losing his job, uproots the family from Brooklyn and moves them to his hometown of Erie Harbor. But as we’ve seen in countless shows wherein a person vows never to return to their hometown,...

“I’m a journalist!” Hilde Lisko tells her father, Matt. “You’re a fourth-grader!” he replies.
Both are right.
In the new Apple TV+ drama Home Before Dark, inspired by the real work of underage reporter Hilde Lysiak, Hilde (Brooklynn Prince) goes to elementary school and has trouble making friends, but she’s also seen All the President’s Men 36 times and runs her own local newspaper. And when a suspicious death in the neighborhood points to a crime that traumatized Matt (Jim Sturgess), as a boy, Hilde investigates.

From creators Dara Resnik and Dana Fox, and directed in part by Jon M. Chu, Apple TV Plus’ earnest series further mythologizes the compelling true story of Hilde Lysiak, a young reporter who broke a local murder case when she was 9 years old.
In “Home Before Dark,” Hilde (played by “The Florida Project” breakout Brooklynn Prince) isn’t just investigating a murder, but digging into a long-dormant kidnapping case that’s haunted her jaded father, Matt (Jim Sturgess), since he was a child witnessing it firsthand. In terms of what Apple TV Plus already offers just a few months after launch, “Home Before Dark” (quite by accident) feels like a feel-good mashup of “Truth Be Told,” Nichelle Tramble’s scripted take on the true crime investigative podcast phenomenon, and Apple’s gung-ho update of Steven Spielberg’s 1985 whodunit series “Amazing Stories.” And if that combination sounds a bit confusing … well,...

Brooklynn Prince, also known as the precocious young actress from The Florida Project, is now starring in an Apple TV+ series called Home Before Dark, which released its first trailer on Friday.
A mystery caper in line with Harriet the Spy, the 10-episode show stars Prince as Hilde Lysiak, a nine-year-old aspiring journalist who discovers a cold case with connections to her father (Jim Sturgess).
As you might expect, Hilde receives some blowback from the small-town police chief and other forces in charge of the case, but she makes some...
