Archival producers spend their days immersed in history – cultural, political, or personal, depending on the project. Yet, historically, their specialized work has often been overlooked, even though it’s key to the Ken Burns canon and other great documentaries like Man on Wire, 13th, The Fog of War, Apollo 11, How to Survive a Plague, They Shall Not Grow Old, and so many others.
The recently formed Archival Producers Alliance is helping to address this fundamental lack of understanding of what archival producers do and how they do it. And it’s also alerting the doc community to foundational challenges posed by the rapid emergence of AI.
In the latest episode of Deadline’s Doc Talk podcast, we speak with Debra McClutchy, a member of the APA who earned an Oscar nomination for co-directing the archive-driven short film The Martha Mitchell Effect. She discusses where archival producers find the rarities...

5 Sexiest Characters in Star Wars Sequel Trilogy - Main Image
Just when we thought that Star Wars trilogies were over after the release of Episode VII – Revenge of the Sith in 2005, Lucasfilm once again brought the story of the galaxy far, far away to life with the sequel trilogy. But aside from its intricate storylines and fascinating lore, another thing that caught the viewers' eyes was its characters’ incredible charm and allure.
The Star Wars sequel trilogy, which included Episode VII—The Force Awakens, Episode VIII—The Last Jedi, and Episode IX—The Rise of Skywalker, featured some of the best actors of their time.
It saw the return of Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and the late Carrie Fisher as Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Leia Organa.
But it also introduced franchise newcomers Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, and Oscar Isaac as Rey Skywalker, Finn, Kylo Ren and Poe Dameron,...

Star Wars has quite a list of projects in the works currently, from Mangold’s new Star Wars film that takes place thousands of years in the past to Waititi’s undisclosed project that he claimed “will piss off the fans.’ Somewhere in the middle of this is a new Rey movie ‘Star Wars: Episode X’ with the current working title ‘New Jedi Order,’ which is rather connected to what the movie is supposed to be about.
A new Star Wars movie was announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023, focusing on Rey after ‘The Rise of Skywalker.’ Directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, the film follows Rey’s journey to rebuild the Jedi Order. Originally, Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson were set to write, but Steven Knight took over. The story is set 15 years after ‘Rise of Skywalker,’ exploring the post-war, post-First Order galaxy with the Jedi in disarray. Kathleen Kennedy shared that...

Many times in life the anticipation is stronger than the fulfillment.
Few things were more anticipated in recent movie history than “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” On many levels, it did almost live up to the hype: It’s still the number-one domestic box-office hit of all time in the U.S., unadjusted for inflation. Its reviews were overwhelmingly positive. It opened up a whole new era of storytelling for the franchise and deftly balanced the return of beloved characters from the Original Trilogy — Harrison Ford, in particular, delivering the most moving performance he ever gave as Han Solo — while introducing dynamic rising stars. It may have been overly indebted to “A New Hope” and mired in a few too many callbacks, but on the whole, “Force Awakens” was a movie that mined the deep emotion fans have for the franchise while pointing a path forward.

Daisy Ridley is intrigued by the "challenge" of returning to the 'Star Wars' franchise. The 32-year-old actress will reprise the role of Rey in Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's movie in the sci-fi series and questioned how she will adapt to playing the protagonist once more.Quizzed on coming back to the 'Star Wars' films by Empire magazine, Daisy said: "Why wouldn't I (do it)? Yes, they have been divisive, but also they bring a lot of love and joy to a lot of people."It feels pretty amazing to be able to continue a character – like, can I even remember how to play her? It's an interesting challenge as an actor to come back to something and try to figure out what's changed for me and what's changed for her."The 'Magpie' actress first starred as Rey in the 2015 movie 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' and is looking forward...

Daisy Ridley shot to fame as the leading protagonist Rey in Star Wars’ sequel trilogy. She shared screen space with newcomers Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, and John Boyega, as well as Star Wars veterans such as Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford in the films. The films were divisive in their responses, with creator George Lucas himself not being a fan.
After Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, which ended Rey’s arc, Ridley has been keeping busy with other projects and has also begun a career as an executive producer. However, she will be returning as Rey in an upcoming Star Wars film. Ridley mentioned that she almost manifested a Rey-centered film right before meeting with LucasFilm CEO Kathleen Kennedy.

It may not have been his plan, but Russell Crowe is capitalizing on the return of the iconic “The Exorcist” franchise with separate standalone religious horror films “The Exorcism,” out June 7, and 2023’s “The Pope’s Exorcist.”
Crowe leads Joshua John Miller’s “The Exorcism” as an actor facing demons — maybe literal ones. Consider it a meta twist: The film centers on Anthony Miller (Crowe), a troubled actor who begins to unravel while shooting a supernatural horror film. His estranged daughter, Lee (Ryan Simpkins), wonders if he’s slipping back into his past addictions or if there’s something more sinister at play.
The buzzy cast includes Sam Worthington, Chloe Bailey, Adam Goldberg, David Hyde Pierce, Josh Warren, Adrian Pasdar, and Tracey Bonner.
Director Miller co-wrote the script with M.A. Fortin. “The Exorcism” marks Miller and Fortin’s second feature, after the 2015 horror comedy “The Final Girls.” They also co-created the...

Having survived a feverishly debated Star Wars trilogy, Daisy Ridley is forging her own path – and taking control.
For Daisy Ridley, the thrill comes first and the fear comes later.
While wading in the middle of the Black Sea for Joachim Rønning’s rousing 1920s-set biopic Young Woman And The Sea, in which she stars as Trudy Ederle, the first woman to swim across the English Channel, Ridley’s aversion to open-water swimming confronted her fully. “You know when you go in the sea?” she asks. “I never go beyond where I can see my feet. The whole thing was such an exploration of things I don’t really like.” Her voice sing-songs: “The lies we tell for the jobs we do!”
Of course, the London-born actor is well-acquainted with treacherous waters. At the age of 21, Ridley was plucked from anonymity to lead the Star Wars sequel trilogy as Rey,...

The news last week that Participant Media would be shutting down shocked the entertainment industry, but it hit the documentary community with particular force.
Going back 20 years, the production and distribution company has supported premium nonfiction content on a major scale, backing documentaries that took on important social and political issues ranging from climate change to race in America, education, the national security state, the U.S.-Mexico drug war, and much more. Along the way, it earned Oscars for Citizenfour, An Inconvenient Truth and American Factory, and Oscar nominations for a slew of others including Flee, Rbg, The Square, and Food, Inc.
On the latest episode of Deadline’s Doc Talk podcast, we discuss the developments at Participant and what they mean for a nonfiction field already been reeling from a sluggish acquisition market and slashed budgets at streamers. Ridley Scott’s Alien is widely considered one of the most influential science fiction and horror films of all time. Alien received mixed reviews at the time of release but managed to find success at the box office. Scott was meticulous with the film and did everything in his capacity to bring his vision to the screen. It also meant that he had to make some wise choices about what made it to the screen and what was removed from the film.

Fans believe that one such decision proved to make a difference in the film as it would have turned the film into a complete joke. The film removed parts of the footage where the Xenomorph attacks and kills Veronica Cartwright’s Lambert.

It’s a rare film that can find genuine joy in an office ice-breaker. We asked Sometimes I Think About Dying director Rachel Lambert how she did it.
Sometimes I Think About Dying stars Daisy Ridley like we’ve never seen her before.
Painfully introverted, lonely, and hemmed in by routine, Fran (Ridley) distracts herself from her office-prison by imagining all the ways she could die. She could crash her car. She could hang herself from a crane. She could meet the wrong kind of snake.
Pulling her out of her morbid reverie is a new co-worker, Robert (Dave Merheje). Playful Slack messages turn into a date at the cinema. A date at the cinema turns into an invite to a murder mystery party. Still, Fran stays closed off, struggling to break out of the comfort zone she’s occupied for so long.
It’s a melancholy, insightful look at...

Johnson joins the latest edition of Deadline’s Doc Talk podcast to discuss her feelings about AI – its areas of promise, but also the way in which the emerging technology is going to fundamentally alter our experience. Nicole Kidman has reigned supreme at movie theaters since 2021, when she and AMC revealed an instantly meme-able spot for “We Make Movies Better,” which urged consumers to return to theaters in the wake of the devastating coronavirus pandemic.
Now, another topic of utmost concern to exhibitors might be getting some high-wattage star treatment: those darn people who won’t silence their cellphones when a movie is playing.
Last week, Marvel and Disney screened a spot that certainly felt like an in-theater PSA of sorts as part of its Deadpool & Wolverine presentation at CinemaCon.
The spot began with Deadpool telling Wolverine about his theories for Secret Wars, a reference to Marvel Studios’ upcoming crossover movie, Avengers: Secret Wars. But every time Deadpool began to say what he’d heard will happen in the movie, a cellphone rang and interrupted him.

When it comes to the most iconic leads to grace the silver screen, one can’t leave Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley out of the equation. While the Alien IP has witnessed several installments since its inception in ’79, the first two releases remain the franchise’s peak, often considered some of the most important contributors to the sci-fi landscape.
So it’s unsurprising to see why most hold one of the first two as one of their favorites from the iconic IP, and when Weaver was asked about her favorite one, she was quick to answer.

Following the success of Alien, the acclaimed filmmaker James Cameron proposed a sequel to the studio, which ultimately earned two Oscars and became one of his most acclaimed works. And there is a prevalent story about how he convinced the studio for this sequel.
Aliens (1986)
It has been believed that Cameron pitched the Alien sequel by simply adding an ‘S’ to the film’s title and turning it into a dollar sign. The Oscar-winning filmmaker confirmed the urban legend surrounding the Alien sequel later in an interview, as he shared that the studio didn’t question his vision and proceeded with the sequel.

Since her Star Wars trilogy ended, Daisy Ridley has largely ploughed herself into indie fare. She’s soon to be seen in morbid drama Sometimes I Think About Dying, and led Neil Burger’s psychological thriller The Marsh King’s Daughter – but next, she’s switching gears again. She’s the titular young woman of Young Woman And The Sea, which is a character-focused human drama – but not an indie film. No, it's a Disney production from producer Jerry Bruckheimer, with Ridley playing Gertrude 'Trudy' Ederle – the 1920s American swimming champion who made it her mission to swim the English Channel. Check out the trailer here:
Anyone else feeling nippy just watching that? For all that Rey had Daisy Ridley leaping through Star Destroyer caverns and fighting for her life in snowy battlefields, this looks like a different kind of physical challenge – heading into the deep end (literally) for a tale of personal and psychological endurance.

Daisy Ridley‘s acting career since “Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker” has been, let’s say, uneven. Sure, “Sometimes I Think About Dying” is a provocative character study and a solid performance by the actress. But then there’s stuff Doug Liman‘s dismal “Chaos Walking” and “The Marsh King’s Daughter,” two films not exactly tailor-made for Ridley’s talents.

Daisy Ridley stars as Trudy Ederle, the first woman to swim the English Channel, in Disney’s Young Woman and the Sea. The official trailer for the inspirational drama shows a determined Trudy ready to face the elements (and jellyfish) despite the incredible danger.
The cast also includes Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Stephen Graham, Kim Bodnia, Christopher Eccleston, and Glenn Fleshler. Jeff Nathanson adapted Glenn Stout’s Young Woman and the Sea: How Trudy Ederle Conquered the English Channel and Inspired the World and Joachim Rønning (Maleficent: Mistress of Evil) directed.
“Daisy Ridley stars as the accomplished swimmer who was born to immigrant parents in New York City in 1905,” reads Disney’s synopsis. “Through the steadfast support of her older sister and supportive trainers, she overcame adversity and the animosity of a patriarchal society to rise through the ranks of the Olympic swimming team and complete the staggering achievement – a 21-mile trek from France to England.

The venerable “Alien” franchise has nearly 10 films under its belt and, somehow, every time a space crew member’s chest bursts open and a horrifying little creature crawls out we’re still terrified.
Such was the case on Thursday at CinemaCon, the annual convention of movie theater owners in Las Vegas, where Disney showed off an extended look at its latest entry “Alien: Romulus.” Directed by Fede Álvarez, the movie follows a group of solar explorers who stumble on an abandoned space station. Guess what’s on board?
Cailee Spaeny leads a next-gen cast of unfortunate souls that must contend with creatures with fun names like facehuggers and Xenomorphs. An extended trailer shows the team navigating dilapidated terrain as tensions escalate, bodies pile up, bones crack and blood starts to spill.

You know what I miss? Disney's inspirational true story dramas and sports movies. As easy and often valid as it is to poke holes in their predictable narrative structures and complain about them reducing even the most unbelievable real-life events to a cookie-cutter formula, we could do with some earnest, uplifting pictures about marginalized people defying the odds to realize their dreams right about now. We got some pretty good -- not to mention culturally sensitive -- ones in the '10s, too, including "McFarland, USA" and "Queen of Katwe." Sadly, however, modest to disappointing box office returns have since led to those types of offerings being relegated to streaming only (see also: the underappreciated Willem Dafoe adventure film "Togo").

As award-winning directors Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss prepared to shoot their new documentary Girls State, they had no way of knowing real-world events would intrude upon the production in a major way. Nor, of course, did their protagonists.
Just as hundreds of young women in Missouri were assembling for an annual exercise in mock government, the draft Dobbs opinion leaked, signaling the U.S. Supreme Court’s intent to reverse Roe v. Wade. McBaine and Moss join Deadline’s Doc Talk podcast to discuss their film and how the Dobbs ruling impacted high school-age girls embarking on their campaigns for governor, state supreme court and other high offices.
The filmmaking couple calls Girls State a “sibling” – not a sequel – to their 2020 film Boys State, winner of the Emmy for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special. Missouri’s Girls State and Boys State programs took place at the same time and same location,...

Star Wars currently has several projects in development, ranging from Mangold’s new film set thousands of years in the past to Waititi’s project, which he teased would challenge fan expectations. In the midst of these, there’s a new movie focusing on Rey.
Announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023, this film follows Rey’s journey after ‘The Rise of Skywalker.’ Directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, it depicts Rey’s efforts to rebuild the Jedi Order. Originally, Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson were set to write, but Steven Knight took over. The story is set 15 years after ‘Rise of Skywalker,’ delving into the aftermath of the war and the state of the galaxy with the Jedi scattered. Kathleen Kennedy revealed that Rey is dedicated to honoring her promise to Luke by rebuilding the Jedi Order, drawing from the teachings found in the ancient books.

There’s never been a better time to be a Star Wars fan in terms of quantity. There’s more Star Wars on screen and on the page now than ever before in the franchise’s history. From Disney+ series to video games to The High Republic books and Marvel comics, you can experience new adventures in the galaxy far, far away pretty much any way you want it right now. If Lucasfilm were able to get some movies off the ground, we’d be able to say that the franchise is firing on all cylinders.
Whether or not we finally do get some new Star Wars on the big screen in the years to come, the future of the franchise is still very bright, thanks to TV series like The Mandalorian, which has already expanded across multiple spinoffs full of Original Trilogy nostalgia and exciting new characters. In fact,...

One year ago, at Star Wars Celebration, the news was confirmed: Daisy Ridley will officially be coming back to the galaxy far, far away, reprising the role of Rey in a film set 15-odd years after Episode IX – The Rise Of Skywalker, in which her hero will be establishing a New Jedi Order. In the intervening 12 months, the project has remained in its early stages, but Ridley herself has been awaiting her return to Star Wars – all while working on acclaimed smaller films like Sometimes I Think About Dying, and Young Woman And The Sea. Among it all, she’s feeling positive about what her Star Wars future holds.
As she tells Empire in a major new career-spanning interview – available in the upcoming The Acolyte issue – this time she’s “coming in a bit more eyes wide open” to the whole experience. “I suppose I feel more like I’m owning it.

CiniemaCon 2024 is upon us, and as we prepare for a deluge of news, previews, and commentary from the show floor, JoBlo’s Editor-in-Chief, Chris Bumbray, has spotted the official title for Ridley Scott’s upcoming Gladiator sequel. Forgoing subtitles, such as Gladiator: Blood on the Sand or Gladiator: Wicked Empire, Ridley Scott’s Gladiator sequel is titled Gladiator II. While the title is simple, it aptly includes the Roman numeral for two. I see what you did there, Mr. Scott. Sometimes, the obvious choice is also the correct one.
Gladiator 2 is one of the year’s hotly-anticipated films after Ridley Scott’s original, starring Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, and Connie Wilson, became a favorite among film buffs, with some calling it “magnificent,” “compelling,” and “richly enjoyable.” Near the film’s release, you couldn’t go more than a day without someone shouting, “Are you not entertained?” in your face,...
