We knew the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, were going to be a mixed bag when we watched the opening ceremony and saw dazzling displays alongside some unfortunate mishaps. The 2014 Olympics officially came to an end Sunday night, with an impressive closing ceremony featuring the three Sochi mascots, dancers and a journey through Russian culture.
The Sochi closing ceremonies were elaborate, filled with detailed sets and beautiful lighting tricks. The closing ceremony featured a lot of dancing, including a group of people who formed the five Olympic rings on the floor. Proving Russia is not without a sense of humor, the fifth ring failed to open for a short moment before finally opening and completing the Olympic sign – something that failed to happen at the opening ceremonies when the fifth ring failed to open.
Olympians then paraded out, to roars from the crowds, each country again in their national uniforms. USA’s Julie Chu from the Women’s Ice Hockey Team carried the flag through the parade.

Two, four, six, eight, who do we appreciate? All the athletes in Sochi! It's been a seven days since the 2014 Winter Olympics kicked off in Russia, and while the medal count might tell us which country is dominating, we're more interested in some of the more obscure stats. So here you have it: Sochi by the numbers. 1 The number of HBO Girls/Sochi parody Tumblrs. 2 The number of athletes who won the gold for the women's downhill event. It was a tie. Also the number of times bobsledder Johnny Quinn got stuck in Sochi, once in a bathroom and once in an elevator. 4 The number of puppies Team USA's Gus Kenworthy posed with on Instagram. He says he wants to rescue them. 15 The number of sports represented, from alpine skiing to curling. 26 The number of days Russian figure skater Julia Lipnitskaia qualified by. She's only 15 and the youngest gold-medal winner ever.

Jon Stewart would like to congratulate U.S. bobsledder Johnny Quinn on winning the U.S.’s first gold in “bustage” — a new Winter Olympics event in which athletes break down shoddily constructed doors. Quinn competed in “bustage” — the accent is similar to the one in “dressage” — while trapped in a bathroom in Sochi, Russua, site of the games. Stewart says Quinn overcame a competitor better known for breaking down walls: The Kool-Aid Man. Also read: Olympics: Is Julia Lipnitskaia’s Routine ‘Schindler’s List: On Ice’? The curling competition began at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics on Monday, perplexing and intriguing those unfamiliar with the sport.
What Is Curling?
Curling, a variation of shuffleboard that’s played on ice, only relatively recently became an Olympic sport. Its first introduction to the Games came in the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano. Since then, the U.S. has only placed once – earning a bronze medal in the 2006.
During a game of curling, two teams of four set up on either side of the ice lane called a “sheet.” Each team will proceed to slide their 44-pound stones to the target on the other side of the lane. In the center of the target – or “house” – is the “button,” which is like a bull’s-eye. Throughout an “end,” each team throws 8 stones. There are 10 ends in a curling game.

Michel Mulder and Ronald Mulder, twins from the Netherlands, both captured medals at Sochi 2014 in the 500m speed skating competition.
Twin Brothers Medal In 500m Speed Skating
Michel Mulder won gold, finishing just .01 seconds before Jan Smeekens crossed the finish line with a time of 69.31 seconds. In third place, was Ronald Mulder. Although he didn’t beat his brother in the end, Roland Mulder managed to have the day’s best time in his second-round, coming in at just 34.49. Unfortunately for him, it wasn’t enough to bump off Michel Mulder or their fellow Dutchman, Smeekens.
Tae Bum Mo, who won the gold in the event at Vancouver 2010, ended up in fourth place, while Japan’s Joji Kate and Keiichiro Nagashima came in fifth and sixth place, respectively.
With their impressive performances on the ice, the Mulders became the second pair of twins to medal in the same event at a Winter Olympics.

Shaun White failed to make history on Tuesday, when he came in fourth place in the men’s halfpipe event at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics.
Shaun Loses Out On Halfpipe Medal
White, 27, had been aiming to be the first American to capture gold medals in the same event in three consecutive Olympics. Not only did he not get the gold, he didn’t manage to crack into the top three – finishing in fourth place. During his first run, White earned a score of 35 points after a butt check and a second, harder fall. His second score of 90.25 wasn’t enough to save him.
Switzerland’s Iouri Podladtchikov picked up the gold with a score of 94.75, while Japanese snowboarders Ayumu Hirano and Taku Hiraoka won the silver and bronze, respectively.
Danny Davis Happy For Other Snowboarders
One individual who wasn’t terribly upset about White’s defeat was his teammate and fellow halfpipe finalist Danny Davis.

U.S. men’s snowboarding star Shaun White earned a spot in the halfpipe final at Sochi 2014 on Tuesday.

Japan’s Taku Hiraoka and Ayumu Hirano, Switzerland’s Christian Haller and David Habluetzel all automatically advanced after placing in the top three of their heats.
Athletes Fear Halfpipe Conditions
Prior to the qualifying runs, it was uncertain if the event could go on as planned, as the unseasonably warm weather threatened the conditions of the halfpipe. The bottom of the pipe, according to the athletes was dangerously bumpy.

Jamie Anderson, the U.S. women’s snowboarding star, took home the gold in the Slopestyle event at the Sochi 2014 Olympics.
Jamie Anderson Wins Gold At Sochi
Anderson, 23, scored an impressive 95.25 out of 100 for her second run down the slopes on Sunday. Finland’s Enni Rukajarvi earned the silver with a score of 92.50, while Great Britain’s Jenny Jones won the bronze with 87.25 points.
Coming into her second run, Anderson knew she had to earn high marks. She’d only received 80.75 points for her first run, and after her second go down the slope, two more snowboarders would have a chance to top her. The pressure, though notable, wasn’t easy to discern as Anderson began her effort.
In the all-important 45-seconds, Anderson was flawless on the rails and landed two 720s with ease. Although the run guaranteed her a medal, she had to wait for the other two athletes...

The 49er. I'm not talking about the San Fran type that was just a couple of bobbled balls away from the Super Bowl this year... I’m talking about the real thing. The water panning, gold tooth wearing, scraggly haired, crazy eyed character from early American history. That's what we're looking at in the upcoming short The Prospector's Curse.
Yukon Cornelius be damned. You know these early prospectors had to be a little unbalanced. You can't just sit with a pan in the water all day hoping gold will wash up into it without being a little touched. It's this fun thought that drives The Prospector's Curse, which incidentally carries the tagline "There's blood in them there hills!". It's early in 2012, but that is officially one of our favorite tags so far this year.
The film is currently in post-production in Toronto, Canada. For more info visit The Prospector's Curse Facebook page.

London, Nov 20: Snow Patrol drummer Jonny Quinn has revealed the band wants to collaborate with Lady Gaga because as an artiste she is the whole deal.
The 'Called out in the Dark' group has a lot of respect for the 'Bad Romance' hitmaker and would love to get her into the studio to add something different to one of their songs, reports femalefirst.co.uk.
'I think she's pretty incredible. To get her to guest vocal would be a coup,' said Quinn.
'I love watching her and reading her interviews. She knows exactly what she's doing, she seems so much smarter than your average pop star and is really talented,' he.
