Bryce Dallas Howard is set to direct and produce Walt Disney Studios’ reboot of “Flight of the Navigator,” which reimagines the original 1986 film with a female lead. The new movie, which marks Howard’s feature directorial debut, is slated to premiere exclusively on Disney Plus.
The original “Flight of the Navigator” was directed by Randal Kleiser and written by Mark H. Baker, Michael Burton and Matt MacManus. The family sci-fi adventure film followed 12-year-old David Freeman (Joey Cramer), who goes unconscious after falling down in the woods, only to get abducted by an alien spaceship that transports him from 1978 to 1986. David spends the film trying to reunite with his family, but gets entangled with the police and NASA along the way.

Bryce Dallas Howard is set to direct and produce a reboot of “Flight of the Navigator” for Disney+, an individual with knowledge of the deal told TheWrap.
The film will reimagine the story with a female lead. The 1986 original told the story of a 12-year-old boy who is abducted by a UFO and reappears eight years later at the same age, with no recollection of what happened. Randal Kleiser (“Grease”) directed, and it was written by Mark H. Baker, Michael Burton and Matt MacManus.
The film, although distributed by Disney, was produced and financed by now defunct company Producers Sales Organization. Disney tried to remake the film in 2009 with Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly attached to pen the script, but Disney lost the rights to Lionsgate in the 2010s. However, the studio couldn’t get the project off the ground, so it reverted back to Disney.
John Swartz and Justin Springer are also producing.

Disney Studios is developing a reimagining of its 1986 sci-fi live action feature Flight of the Navigator with a female lead, a project that Bryce Dallas Howard is attached to direct and produce for Disney+.
The original movie, starring Joey Cramer, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Veronica Cartwright, follows a boy who travels eight years into the future from 1978 and has an adventure with an intelligent, wisecracking alien ship, named Max. Paul Reubens provided the voice of Max in the film which was released in late July 1986 grossing an uninflated $18.6M at the domestic B.O. Randal Kleiser, who had directed Paramount’s big hit Grease, and The Blue Lagoon, directed the original Flight of the Navigator off a screenplay by Michael Burton and Phil Joanou.

In this week’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story watch-along at IGN, screenwriters Chris Weitz and Gary Whitta had some trivia for fans who decided to revisit the downbeat standalone film along with them, including some alternate titles that didn’t make the cut, and more info on how some of the characters changed in both the initial writing stage and during production on Gareth Edwards’ Lucasfilm project, which was later heavily reshaped by co-writer Tony Gilroy.
“There was one point at which we were kicking around titles for this, right?” Weitz said (via Comicbook). “Rogue One was a good choice eventually, but one of them was Dark Times.”
“We had a lot,” Whitta admitted. “At one point, John Swartz, who was one of the creative executives on the film had a list and we all kind of voted on the ones that we liked….One of the things that occurred to me,...

Deborah Chow will be the director who ushers Ewan McGregor back into the Jedi Universe to resume his portrayal of Obi-Wan Kenobi on the new Lucasfilm series planned for the Disney+ subscription streaming service.
Chow’s credits include Jessica Jones, Mr. Robot, American Gods, Better Call Saul, and Lost in Space, but Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said it was Chow’s recent labors on the upcoming The Mandalorian that helped seal the deal for her Obi-Wan undertaking.
“We really wanted to select a director who is able to explore both the quiet determination and rich mystique of Obi-Wan in a way that folds seamlessly into the Star Wars saga,” Kennedy said. “Based on her phenomenal work developing our characters in The Mandalorian, I’m absolutely confident Deborah is the right director to tell this story.”
Chow will also be an executive producer on the series along with Kennedy, McGregor, series writer Hossein Amini, Tracey Seaward (The Queen), and John Swartz (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story). Jason McGatlin, Lucasfilm’s Executive Vice President for Production, will serve as co-producer.
The Mandalorian premieres Nov. 12 when Disney+ launches as a game-changing new entity for the entertainment giant. No final title or release date has been announced for the Obi-Wan series. Chow is repped by Wme.

Deborah Chow will remain in a galaxy far, far away for Disney+. The director, who helmed multiple episodes of “The Mandalorian,” has been tapped to direct Disney+’s upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series.
The untitled series, which starts shooting next year, will see Ewan McGregor return as the Jedi Master, who last appeared in the 2005 film, “Revenge of the Sith.” It is set eight years after the events of “Revenge of the Sith.” The actor played a younger version of Kenobi in the “Star Wars” prequel trilogy that began with 1999’s “The Phantom Menace.” The character was previously portrayed by Alec Guinness in the original “Star Wars” trilogy.

It's official! Ewan McGregor will reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi for a Star Wars TV series on Disney+.
"Who's more foolish, the fool...or the fool who follows him?"
While the Skywalker saga is wrapping up on the big screen with The Rise of Skywalker, Disney is getting more aggressive about expanding the small screen Star Wars universe on the Disney+ streaming service. But the latest addition to the Star Wars live action TV lineup is perhaps the most anticipated of all, as it involves the return of one of the most beloved figures in franchise history: Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Entertainment Weekly has revealed some new details about the wheel shaped space station we've seen a squadron of X-Wings attacking in the trailers and TV spots for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Apparently, it's a Shield Gate which hovers above Scarif, a tropical planet which the Empire has covered with an impenetrable force field to protect what the site calls a remote weapons development facility. "You can see the blue sheen surrounding the entire planet," Rogue One co-producer John Swartz reveals. "The shield gate is the security. As Imperial ships and cargo comes through, it punches a hole in the shield so they can pass. The gate officer gives clearances as they give out their call signs." Confirming that it's the home of Orson Krennic, the head of the Empire's special weapons division, he adds: "It’s part of their military industrial complex. It’s not necessarily where the Death Star was constructed,...

As the years go by and countless new horror projects hit the big and small screens, it becomes increasingly important to not forget the legends of the genre's past. Horror fans consistently do a wonderful job paying respect to the past while enjoying the present, but in the short film Titano, the late, great Irwin Keyes plays a former horror movie villain sadly forgotten... until the opportunity arises one night for his resurrection.
As many horror fans know, Irwin Keyes (House of 1000 Corpses, Intolerable Cruelty) passed away last month at the age of 63. He is missed dearly, but his passion for film will live on forever through his memorable onscreen roles, including his turn as the titular character in Ben Chavda's short film Titano, which you can watch below.

The 14th annual Revelation Perth International Film Festival is, once again, packed to the gills with worldwide wonderful, weird and revelatory filmmaking. The fest runs this year on July 14-24.
The highlight of the festival is the once-in-a-lifetime live performance of Gravity Was Everywhere Back Then, which will be performed on July 17 at 7:15 p.m. American animator Brent Green will be traveling Down Under to provide the live musical score and narration for his emotional, live-action animated tale about undying love and creation. He will also be accompanied by band mates and foley artists, Mike McGinley, John Swartz, Donna K and Drew Henkles.
Some other films to look out for at the fest will be the Australian premiere of Zach Clark‘s terminally twisted Vacation!, a black comedy about four girls on a debauched weekend of drinking and drugging that ends horribly for all involved; Marie Losier’s acclaimed...

Brent Green is one of Filmmaker‘s favorite young artists, a wholly original animator and performer who has become something of an art world star on the basis of his idiosyncratic, low-fi short films and live events. Tonight and tomorrow he brings the full evening live version of Gravity is Everywhere Back Then to New York’s The Kitchen. From The Kitchen’s website:
Inspired by the real actions of the eccentric Leonard Wood, filmmaker Brent Green brings to life this love story like no other in his first feature-length film. Shot entirely on the full-scale town he built in his backyard, Green combines animation and stop-motion in an ethereal opus to lovers and tinkerers everywhere. In these performances, Green provides the live narration along with live music by Brendan Canty (Fugazi), Green, Drew Henkels (Drew & the Medicinal Pen), Donna K, Michael McGinley (the Bitter Tears and lead actor in...

My criteria for picking Bad Lit’s Movie of the Year is simple: First, I ask myself, “What movie has stuck in my head the most this year?” Then, whatever movie pops to mind first is my selection. But, at the same time, knowing how I think and all, some consideration goes towards what little-seen film do I think could use a little extra attention and a good publicity boost.
That didn’t happen this year.
Brent Green‘s live-action animated feature film Gravity Was Everywhere Back Then is about as close as an underground film can get to being a blockbuster. First of all, it had a theatrical run in NYC at the IFC Center, then Green and his live performance collaborators have been touring with it all over the country and screening the film to major audiences everywhere it goes. And it deserves every bit of attention and acclaim it has gotten.

There are tons of bad movies in this world that you can’t wait for them to be over. But, Brent Green’s debut animated feature film, Gravity Was Everywhere Back Then — which is a magnificent movie — contains a scene of such devastating heartbreak and sadness that I was practically praying that the film would end before I would have to witness it.
The film is many things, not the least of which is a love story between two lonely souls, Leonard (Michael McGinley) and Mary (donna k.). From the outset, Green, in his famously shaky narration, informs us that Mary will eventually get sick — very sick — but the...

Gravity Was Everywhere Back Then is the first feature film by underground film animator Brent Green. The film is based on the true story of a man who, in an effort to cure his beloved wife of a terminal illness, built her an immense, puzzle-shaped house. The hope was that the house’s unique layout and construction would have special healing properties.
In addition to being Green’s first feature-length project, Gravity also marks a slightly different approach to animation for the filmmaker. Instead of manipulating stop-motion puppets or life-sized inanimate constructs, Green has used live actors, but still shot the film using stop-motion photography. The centerpiece scene of the film is a stop-motion car crash that was filmed with real cars and live actors.
