We’re speaking the morning after you went to a Chelsea match. Are you a big fan?
I definitely was in childhood, so it was a treat to return. I grew up going to Stamford Bridge with my uncle. Gianfranco Zola was my favourite player.

Reports are leaking through various news outlets that Chelsea forward Alexandre Pato could be leaving the club before his contract expires, even before making a single appearance for the Blues. His career stats for Chelsea currently stand at zero minutes on the pitch, and zero goals, allowing him entry into a very unfortunate clan which no player wants to be associated with; the worst Premier League signings of all time.
Thousands of players have come and gone during the twenty four year span of England’s top division – some, such as Luis Suarez and Gianfranco Zola, are revered as the greatest signings in Premier League history, but there is a collective so bad that they’re permanently engrained in the minds of football supporters up and down the country.

After reading this article, one will be able to rise to the cream of the crop in the ‘Tyneside Table Quiz’ as they correctly answer which former Toon stalwart has gone on to become a greengrocer, which former Newcastle centre-forward went out with the daughter of a former Us president and just who broke Gianfranco Zola’s fishing rod?
They may be bizarre questions, and even stranger answers, but Newcastle United have always been a unique slice of entertainment in the frivolous circus...

From the boardroom to the pitch, controversy has a long and mischievous association with Chelsea Football Club. Our club heroes may include saints like Gianfranco Zola and Peter Osgood, but we haven’t shied away from cheering on the occasional sinner either. There are a couple of players in the current squad who could find themselves added to this list in future, with Cesc Fabregas having a bit of a reputation for mouthing off and Diego Costa’s temper sometimes getting the better of him, but for now let’s give them the benefit of the doubt for now.
This list will focus on players and staff past and present with established histories of causing a bit of a ruckus whenever their names get mentioned anywhere in the media outside a match report… and sometimes inside a match report as well.There’s...

The modern Premier League is a multicultural phenomenon; thanks to the influence of players like Eric Cantona and Gianfranco Zola, the league is the destination for players who see the money and headlines that await them, and thus, every season we sit back and wait for the latest big money foreign signing, that promise to transform the league and guide their new team to glory. In the past players like Didier Drogba and Sergio Agüero have justified their price tag and the inevitable hype that surrounded them – but not every big name signing has worked for their English buyers.
For some of the failures bad scouting is to be blamed; they are the players who never had the talent to justify their transfer and failed because they simply weren’t good enough, like Nacho Gonzalez for Newcastle, or more spectacularly Ali Dia at Southampton.

Leeds United manager Brian McDermott praised the home support after his side came from two-goals down at half-time to draw 3-3 at Elland Road.
The home fans made an electric atmosphere in the second-half after Matt Smith pulled one back for Leeds and the manager believes this was key in the home side getting back into the game. He said:
“We got ourselves back to 2-1 and the whole place erupted like I knew it would. It was a fantastic atmosphere in Elland Road today and I was proud of my players.”
“It was an absolutely great atmosphere in there today. I’m sure they’ll be initial disappointment that we didn’t manage to win the game 3-2 but I think the fans will go home and think they’ve seen some good football with some real desire from our players.”
The Leeds United manager was also very complimentary of star-striker Ross McCormack,...

No less than a week ago, English actor George MacKay walked away from the Scottish BAFTAs with the Best Actor award to his name, for his spine-chilling performance in For Those In Peril. He now returns in something a little more light-hearted, in Simon Sprackling’s Breakfast with Jonny Wilkinson – and we had the pleasure of speaking to the gifted young actor.
Based on Chris England’s stage play, Breakfast with Jonny Wilkinson takes place on the morning England were victorious in the Rugby World Cup final, beating Australia narrowly. MacKay recalls his own memories of the day, who his own sporting idols are – and he also discusses his future, and whether Hollywood may be on the cards…
Well I’ll start by saying congratulations on the BAFTA, you must have been thrilled?
Yeah thank you very much, I was chuffed, really chuffed. It’s cool. For Those in Peril got Best Feature Film too,...

Both Watford and Granada make their way onto the Vicarage Road pitch.
Watford’s pre-season preparations came closer to a conclusion as they played their one and only home friendly prior to the new season.
With the new Sky Bet Championship getting underway next week when Gianfranco Zola’s side travel to Birmingham City, the Hornets took on sister club Granada and emerged with a comfortable 2-0 victory.
The La Liga side who finished in 15th place last season are also owned by the Pozzo family but it was only decided last week that they would face their English counterparts for the first time instead of Watford’s planned friendly against the New York Cosmos.
Sporting their brand new away kit, the hosts got off to a exhilarating start as early as the second minute as new signing Marco Davide Faraoni – formerly of Inter Milan – raced down the right hand...

For many years Chelsea have been a consistent top four team in the Barclays Premier League, always with at least one big name in their squad, such as Gianfranco Zola or Didier Drogba. In the past they were not able to keep up with the buying power of clubs such as Manchester United and had to nurture young talent rather than buy already well established superstars.
However, this all changed in June 2003 when Russian business tycoon, Roman Abramovich took over the ownership of the club. His vast wealth and willingness to flaunt it, allowed Chelsea to immediately buy big. Many pundits believed he had changed the face of the European transfer window for good. Chelsea’s signing of Andriy Shevchenko in May 2006 for £30 million from AC Milan broke all records, making him the most expensive footballer in Premier League history.
Nevertheless, Chelsea’s imports across the years in the January...

Rafael Benitez, Michael Laudrup, Andre Villas-Boas, Fabio Capello, Roy Keane, Ralf Rangnick, Alex McLeish and Juan Carlos Garrido. That is just a short list of experienced managers who are currently unemployed. Not for a second do I think that all of them would be available to a club with the financial constraints of West Brom.
With Chris Hughton taking the Norwich job, Steve Bruce going to Hull and Roberto Martinez’s loyalty to Dave Whelan making a mockery of all other manger – chairman relationships. Where exactly were West Brom supposed to look for a new manager?
“From the outset, we decided to pursue candidates who are renowned for their coaching ability and Steve was very much at the forefront of our thoughts because of the clubs he has worked at and the high regard he is held in within the game”.
Dan Ashworth, West Brom Technical Director, said that to the West Brom website.

Just as we were about to publish this article, former Rangers manager Walter Smith has emerged as favourite to take the Wolves managers job.
Smith is believed to have held talks with Wolves owner Steve Morgan and chief executive Jez Moxey about taking over until the end of the season after their original choice Alan Curbishely turned them down, and they aren’t certain of Steve Bruce’s credentials to keep them in the division.

In a strange move that has split the club’s fans, Queens Park Rangers have sacked manager Neil Warnock with the club currently sitting in 17th in the Premiership and just five wins so far this term.
If owner Tony Fernandes is looking for more immediate results, and stability at Qpr, he will find it difficult to find anyone currently available who will bring those qualities to a team who have failed to take advantage of the collected talents currently on the books.
A statement to confirm the dismissal followed closely after the announcement of his sacking, which confirmed that the board’s decision to retaining the club’s Premiership status ultimately lead to this decision. The key points of the statement, as well as a response from Warnock are below:

'Doing EastEnders wasn't exactly suffering for my art, but my soul's not in TV. We all have to live, don't we?'
What got you started?
A lady called Anna Scher. She used to go around the London schools in the holidays, doing theatre workshops. My friend Paul's sister was going, so we turned up one day when I was about 13. There were some nice-looking girls there, so we carried on going.
What was your big breakthrough?
Doing a play called Class Enemy at the Royal Court when I was about 16. It was about a classroom of kids left with no teacher, so each of them gives a lesson about what they know.
Do you suffer for your art?

Norwich City battled well but were on the end of a 3-1 loss to Chelsea this afternoon, a result that flattered the Blues. Goals from Jose Bosingwa, a penalty from Frank Lampard and a debut strike from Juan Mata condemned the Canaries to defeat at Stamford Bridge. Grant Holt had pulled one back for the visitors, but by conceding a third penalty in successive games and receiving a sending off for ‘keeper John Ruddy, Norwich ultimately sealed their own fate.

In the seven years Gianfranco Zola played for Chelsea, the Italian thrilled both fans of The Blues and those of other clubs. This celebrates his finest moments and the impact he made upon the Premier League. The diminutive Italian was one of those calibre of players whose skill was so sublime, it was hard not to appreciate his talent even when he was slotting the ball past your stranded goalkeeper.
