Pharrell appears to be celebrating his 51st birthday today, April 5, with a gift to fans — a new album that’s totally free to stream and download through one specific website.
To say there aren’t many confirmable details about the 10-track project is an understatement. Based purely on the album artwork, the project appears to be called Black Yacht Rock Vol. 1: City of Limitless Access and might be credited to a group called Virginia — though, for all we know, Virginia is part of the title.

Music movies are having a moment — if, indeed, they ever stopped having one. Take the pop-music biopic. There are times, like right now, when it surges in popularity, yet the form has never gone out of style. And music documentaries, a staple of the indie-film world, have only proliferated during the streaming era. This means that they have to compete for visibility, but a ton of them are getting made and (mostly) getting seen. They’ve become a happy epidemic.
A few, like “Amy” or “The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?,” are popular and vital enough to have carved out a place in the culture — and, in the case of both those films, to have inspired the creation of a biopic. I have it on good authority that when you’re trying to put together a music documentary, the prospect of it spawning a biopic can be a key selling point.

A Manhattan judge abruptly dismissed a criminal case against three men accused of stealing dozens of pages of handwritten lyrics to Eagles hits including “Hotel California” after concluding that band member Don Henley “manipulated” prosecutors by withholding evidence.
Three men — Glenn Horowitz, a rare book dealer; Craig Inciardi, a curator at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; and Edward Kosinski, a memorabilia auctioneer — were all charged in 2022 with conspiracy over accusations that they had illegally obtained over 100 pages of lyrics from Henley.
The defendants maintained that they had legally obtained the lyric sheets from author Ed Sanders, who was hired in the 1970s to write a book about the Eagles.
During a hearing on Wednesday (via Billboard), Justice Curtis Farber revealed that Henley recently handed over more than 6,000 pages of emails and other notes that lent credence to the defense’s claims that Sanders had legitimately come into possession of Henley’s lyrics.

Don Henley, the cofounder of The Eagles, had a serious look on his face while arriving at Manhattan Criminal Court in New York City.
A judge heard testimony in a criminal case about stolen notes with the lyrics for The Eagles’ album, Hotel California, including some of the band’s most iconic hits.
The notes were stolen from Henley’s barn and then began showing up in unauthorized auctions in 2012.
“It just wasn’t something that was for public viewing. It was our process. It was something very personal, very private,” Henley told the court. “I still wouldn’t show that to anybody.”
The Eagles have been touring for their final tour, The Long Goodbye. The tour is expected to continue until 2025. Steely Dan is an opening act for the tour.
The Eagles wrote in an Instagram post, “Our long run has lasted far longer than any of us ever dreamed.

When Joe Keery first moved to Chicago to attend DePaul University’s Theatre School, he had no idea what direction his life would take. After graduating in 2014, the Massachusetts native stuck around for three more years, working at a restaurant, getting small acting gigs, playing in his former band Post Animal, and moving from neighborhood to neighborhood.
“It was kind of whatever would hit first,” he recalls over coffee in the West Village. These days, Keery has settled down in downtown New York between shooting shows like Stranger Things and Fargo.

If there’s a pop musician of the last 60 years who deserves a great documentary, it’s Antonio Carlos Jobim. Some might bristle at my description of him as “pop.” In Brazil, where Jobim, one of the prime architects of bossa nova, is considered a national treasure, he’s simply thought of as a composer, placed on a pedestal along with classical Brazilian composers like Heitor Villa-Lobos. Jobim’s gorgeously complex chord structures — the aural equivalent of melty-colored Impressionist paintings — were arguably more jazz than pop.
Yet we’re long past the point where pop can’t include all that. Just consider Steely Dan’s “Aja,” an album of luminous jazz modalities that also happens to be the purest pop. Jobim, though he wrote in assorted forms, was quintessentially a composer of pop songs, and they had a tranquil forlorn incandescence all their own. There was something in the air...

When you think of Grammy darlings, Foo Fighters should come to mind. The icons have received 15 Grammys throughout their career, including a record five wins for Best Rock Album. But all these awards, while impressive, have not helped the rockers win outside of the rock and music film fields, despite the group picking up a couple of general field nominations along the way. It’s hard to argue against Foo’s general field losses against heavyweights like Adele, Herbie Hancock, and Amy Winehouse, but it does feel like the legendary band should have won a big category by now after getting nominations for more than 25 years. What if I told you their time is finally here?
Foo Fighters’ “But Here We Are” is arguably the band’s most beloved album by critics. On Metacritic, it holds a score of 86, the highest of their career. Part of the record’s critical...

Like its two recent multi-disc predecessors, Joni Mitchell Archives — Volume 3: The Asylum Years (1972-1975) collects live and studio vault tapes from a particular era in Mitchell’s career. This one gets off to a seemingly unbeatable start. Much of its first quarter is devoted to an entire live show from Carnegie Hall in 1971, months after Mitchell’s landmark album Blue had been released. Sounding at the top of her game, vocally and instrumentally, Mitchell opens with a swooping, vivacious “This Flight Tonight.” Accompanying herself on guitar, piano and dulcimer,...

Julian Lennon shares many traits with his dad, John Lennon. For one, he looks strikingly similar to his father. While his half brother, Sean Ono Lennon, admits he lives off The Beatles’ money his dad earned, Julian has also enjoyed a fruitful music career of his own, partly out of necessity. He missed out on millions of dollars when he was cut out of his dad’s will. Though he showed respect for his father’s music, Lennon revealed his favorite album isn’t a Beatles record or solo John album.

In the summer of 1989, Paul McCartney hit the road for the first time as a solo artist. The Wings tours of the Seventies had featured only a smattering of Beatles songs, but this time around he was going to play nearly 20 a night. Pulling this off would require a guitarist who was capable of re-creating some very famous parts originally played by George Harrison and John Lennon. McCartney had his choice of big-name players for the job, but he went with Robbie McIntosh.

Led Zeppelin songs ran the gamut. They had heavy pieces and delicate tunes. Songs they loved and songs they hated. Epics that stretched the clock. Led Zeppelin’s shortest songs included two of their most recognizable pieces, one of which continues raking in money for the band.
Note: We included finished songs from the studio albums and deluxe reissues only, so the concert sound experiment “LA Drone” won’t make our list.
(l-r) John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, and John Bonham | Dick Barnatt/Redferns 8. ‘Royal Orleans’ Run time: 2:59
The Presence song was an outlier — every other track on the album was at least four minutes long, and two tracks stretched more than nine minutes. Guitarist Jimmy Page and drummer John Bonham settled into a tight groove immediately, and Page played a main riff that resembled the rock-jazz fusion of Steely Dan more than Led Zeppelin.

What Led Zeppelin lacked in song title creativity, they made up for with impressively played and magically memorable tunes. Zep had four songs with the word love in the title, but one of them, “Whole Lotta Love,” was one of their most pleasantly experimental songs. Led Zeppelin’s five “song” songs reveal a dearth of song-naming talent, but the best are standouts from their catalog.

There are two distinct camps when looking at Led Zeppelin’s “song” songs. Two that stand far below the trio of frontrunners jockeying to be the best. “The Lemon Song” sits firmly in the first group.

Over the course of their 20-plus-year career, the New Pornographers have often specialized in catchy ambiguity. If leader Carl Newman was just a machine cranking out power-pop tunes, it would get boring. But there’s also a lot of mixed emotions going on under the surface of their studiously nuanced pop-rock formalism — like if Cheap Trick was as quick-witted as Steely Dan, or the Romantics were as throughtful as Rem. The Canadian band’s iconic 2000 debut, Mass Romantic, was a masterclass in hook-mad fun highlighted by songs with resolutely unfun...

A hit song from the 1980s had lyrics similar to The Beatles‘ “Blackbird.” One of the writers of the 1980s song said he was upset by the similarity. In addition, he said The Beatles’ song might be based on a book by a famous author.

Richard Page is a member of the band Mr. Mister, most known for the song “Broken Wings” and “Kyrie.” During a 2010 interview with Smashing Interviews Magazine, he named some of his influences. “The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Stevie Wonder, Steely Dan, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Chick Corea, and Keith Jarrett,” he said.
Both Mr. Mister’s “Broken Wings” and The Beatles’ “Blackbird” include the phrase “Take these broken wings and learn to fly.” Page was asked if this was an intentional reference on the part of Mr. Mister.

Wayne Shorter, the saxophonist and composer who was a major figure in the development of modern jazz, died Thursday at a Los Angeles hospital. He was 89.
His death was confirmed to The New York Times by his publicist Alisse Kingsley. No further information has yet been released.
A native of Newark, New Jersey, Shorter first came to acclaim in the 1950s and ’60s as the tenor saxophonist for the groundbreaking Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and, later, the massively influential Miles Davis Quintet. Among other recordings, he played on Davis’ hit album Bitches Brew in 1969.
A favorite of jazz enthusiasts nearly from the start of his career, Shorter broke through to wider public popularity both with Bitches Brew and, in 1971, his co-founding of Weather Report, the funk-jazz fusion group he co-founded with keyboardist Joe Zawinul and bassist Miroslav Vitous.
