The Guardian’s arts editor Alex Needham, music and features writer Sam Wolfson, and film critic Ellen E Jones, on what they’re looking forward to this year
What are your cultural new year resolutions? Maybe you’re just going to stop listening to new albums on shuffle, like the film critic Ellen E Jones. “I really ruined Beyoncé’s last album like that,” she says.
Nosheen Iqbal is joined by the Guardian’s arts editor, Alex Needham, the music and features writer Sam Wolfson, and Ellen E Jones, to recommend what to look out for in 2023. The panel discusses the opening of new cultural spaces such as Factory International in Manchester, why old music is trending more than new releases and the films that will drag you out of the house this year.

Netflix is looking for a female actor between 13 and 21 — who is 5-foot-10 or taller — to star in its upcoming original comedy film “Tall Girl.”
The streamer announced a worldwide casting call for the live-action movie’s lead: 16-year-old Jodi, who is more than six feet tall and struggles to survive high school and ultimately embraces her stature with pride. Producers are accepting audition submissions at tallgirlcasting.com between Nov. 5-21, 2018. “Tall Girl” is slated to begin shooting in January 2019.
“Tall Girl” is directed by Nzingha Stewart and written by Sam Wolfson. Producers bill the movie as “capturing the tone” of classic John Hughes teen movies like “Sixteen Candles” and “Pretty in Pink.”
The movie “is about all the places where we feel awkward or tender, and learning not only to accept those places, but to shower them with unconditional and radical love,” Nzingha Stewart said in a statement.

Netflix and McG have set their fourth collaboration with Tall Girl, a feature which will be directed by Nzingha Stewart.
Written by Sam Wolfson, the tone is described as a John Hughes classic. It’s about 16-year-old Jodi who, at more than six feet tall, has to go above and beyond to survive high school while struggling with the constant label of being her school’s tall girl.
All of that changes when she falls for the handsome (and equally tall) foreign exchange student Stig, who gets Jodi’s quirky, best, male friend Dunkleman and his hippie mom as a host family. As a result, Jodi gets embroiled in a surprising love triangle, which helps her realize she’s far more than her insecurities about her height have led her to believe.

With the big heroes in their 50s, 60s and 70s, the usually reliable Jj Abrams is plunging the Girls star into a fearsome spotlight
• Girls star Adam Driver set to play Star Wars villain, reports say
If there is one area where Jj Abrams usually gets it right, it is casting. He was on the money when he picked the relatively untried Chris Pine to play the new Captain Kirk in 2009's rebooted Star Trek. He nailed it when he saw the potential of Phillip Seymour Hoffman to portray one of the most sinister villains in recent Hollywood history in 2006's unexpectedly good Mission: Impossible III. And he may yet have come up trumps with the casting of Girls' Adam Driver as a Darth Vader-like nasty in the mega-hyped upcoming Star Wars revival: Episode VII. Even so, from what we think we know about the first Disney-produced film in the long-running space saga,...

Casting calls for Jj Abrams's continuation of the Star Wars franchise have hit the English and Irish capitals
• More on Star Wars Episode VII
Thousands of hopefuls auditioned this weekend at an open casting call for Star Wars: Episode VII at Twickenham stadium in London.
Casting directors are visiting a number of British cities in their hunt for fresh faces for Jj Abrams's film. Having already stopped off in Bristol earlier this month, they will reportedly also head to Manchester and Glasgow before the process is complete. Auditions were also held at Dublin's Croke Park this weekend and there have been a number of open casting calls in the Us.
UK casting agent Kate Bone told the BBC: "We are doing this to find someone who might not have necessarily gone to drama school. They don't have to have acting experience – just the right look and then we...

Wanted: an athletic, handsome man aged 19-23 and a street-smart and strong girl in her late teens. That was the casting call sent out by Disney as it appealed for unknown actors across Britain to audition for a part in the next instalment of Star Wars.
This seems like as a good opportunity for me to leave behind the bleak world of freelance journalism and head on the road to fame, so I head to the first audition in Bristol. As far as I can tell, there are only two things standing in my way.
First, I've never acted. I was once talked into auditioning for a Talk to Frank anti-cocaine advert, but on the day of the audition I had a terrible cold.

Furthermore, Moore made his career of playing either geeks or the main character’s best friend in favorites as Grandma’s Boy and Hatchet. [1] Last season, FX's boxing drama Lights Out entered the canon of brilliant-but-cancelled television series, when piss-poor ratings brought about its demise despite plenty of critical love. Thankfully, things seem to be working out better for the series' acclaimed star, Holt McCallany, than they did for the show. The actor is now in talks for Gangster Squad, Ruben Fleischer's highly anticipated (well, by us) period cop drama. McCallany would be joining an absolutely top-notch cast which already includes Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Anthony Mackie, Michael Peña, and Giovanni Ribisi, with Bryan Cranston in negotiations [2]. How can you not get excited with a cast like that? Based on a series of articles by Paul Lieberman, Gangster Squad tells the story of an Lapd task force which was formed to fight organized crime and corruption in 1940s Los Angeles. Gosling, Brolin, Mackie, and Cranston will be on the Lapd side...

Jewtopia may have began as a bestselling book, but an adaptation of the same name is headed to theaters with actress Jennifer Love Hewitt in a starring role. Her hot co-star is Crossing Jordan alumnus Ivan Sergei. Gee, and we thought the former Ghost Whisperer might be tied up on television’s Law & Order: Svu.
Jewtopia is described as a little bit Wedding Crashers and a little bit My Big Fat Greek Wedding. That formula sounds like a winner. The indie romance follows two childhood best friends as they reunite as adults. The plot thickens when Sergei’s character asks the female friend “to help him pretend to be Jewish so he can romance a woman,” reported Variety. Ah ha! That also sounds very My Best Friend’s Wedding, which is another winning ingredient. Sergei’s character is a plumber after a certain nice, if not bossy Jewish girl, portrayed by Hewitt.
