With the unfortunate cancellation of How I Met Your Father after only two seasons, we’ve not only had to say goodbye to one of the few streaming comedies that feels like a true sitcom, but now we’ll likely never know who the titular father actually is. The series’ predecessor How I Met Your Mother took eight seasons to finally reveal the identity of the mother, and while it’s hard to believe that Himyf would have lasted that long anyway in the streaming era, it’s still sad that we won’t have the chance to see Sophie (Hilary Duff) find love the way Ted (Josh Radnor) did.
But just because Himym took so long to introduce the mother, doesn’t mean that we haven’t already met the father of Sophie’s child. The pilot episode even says that Sophie met the father the night of Sid...

Hulu is dropping another one of its series, canceling How I Met Your Father after two seasons.
The news comes two days after the Disney-run streamer canceled The Great. How I Met Your Father, which stars Hilary Duff, ended its second season in July and did not answer the implied question in its title.
How I Met Your Father is a spinoff of How I Met Your Mother, which ran on CBS from 2005-14. Though not a direct sequel, it’s set in the same version of New York as the original series and has featured guest appearances from Himym stars Cobie Smulders and Neil Patrick Harris, among other alumni of that show. Characters played by Christopher Lowell and Suraj Sharma also live in the apartment occupied by Ted (Josh Radnor) and Marshall (Jason Segel) in the former series.

Four years after exploring the interwoven horrors of adolescence and parenthood in the bold neo-noir Knives and Skin (the film's solemn cover of the Go-Go's "Our Lips Are Sealed" is still one of the most memorable scenes I've watched in the past decade), filmmaker Jennifer Reeder returns to the haunted halls of high school to expose more societal injustices, toxic masculinity, and timely anxieties in Perpetrator.
Centered on teenager Jonny Baptiste (Kiah McKirnan), who is teetering on the verge of adulthood as she grapples with her unique shapeshifting ability with a little unconventional help from her stern-yet-caring Aunt Hildie (Alicia Silverstone), Perpetrator is now streaming on Shudder and playing theatrically in New York.
To celebrate the release of the latest "coming-of-rage" movie in Jennifer Reeder's impressive filmography, Daily Dead had the great pleasure of catching up with the director in a new video interview to discuss the origin of Perpetrator,...

Writer-director Jennifer Reeder’s Perpetrator cycles through characters and settings at a considerable clip, never stopping long enough to flesh them out beyond an outline. First, in a pre-credits teaser, a masked serial killer abducts a girl walking alone at night. The film then cuts to protagonist Jonny (Kiah McKirnan) breaking into a house before fencing the stolen goods for rent money that she gives to her ailing father (Tim Hopper).
Across this opening stretch of the film, the audience watches Jonny in this setting just long enough to sense her ennui—that she’s desperate to flee her dead-end life. Soon enough, she’s on a train and getting out of Dodge, on her way to live with her aunt Hildie (Alicia Silverstone). And it’s then that she starts to develop strange abilities that directly channel the feelings of the people around her—as well as those of...

Lately, when Jonny Baptiste (Kiah McKirnan) looks in the mirror, she doesn’t even recognize herself… because her face is morphing into someone else. But, as Jonny’s enigmatic Aunt Hildie (Alicia Silverstone) reminds her, this is just one of the side effects of Jonny celebrating her recent 18th birthday and receiving the unconventional gift of Forevering, a family spell that gives Jonny the unique ability of extreme empathy that allows her to tap into the emotions of those around her—a power that’s also wielded by both Aunt Hildie and Jonny’s mother, who disappeared out of Jonny’s life long ago. As Jonny gets used to her new high school run by the misogynistic Principal Burke (Christopher Lowell), she learns that being bestowed with Forevering is both a blessing and a curse, but it just might be the only thing that can stop a masked killer who...

Jennifer Reeder's "Perpetrator" is a spiritual successor to 2019's John Waters-y, super-sensory-heightened debut "Knives and Skin," serving vibes as a main course. That's not entirely a damning accusation. Reeder's style provokes delirium and allows her characters to float through hallucinogenic universes, which the filmmaker somehow controls. "Perpetrator" feels indebted to everything from high school humor in "Clueless" to body horror yuckiness in "Society" to uniquely pubescent terror in "Teeth" — a tonal collision that some won't survive, and others will slurp down like Four Lokos at an underage pregame.

The festival’s 22nd edition offers a hybrid experience of virtual and in-person, with notable genre programming dedicated to repertory screenings that include Re-Animator to upcoming premieres. In other words, Tribeca’s bringing the horror this year.
Here are five titles we can’t wait to see at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival.
Bad Things (United States) – World Premiere
In this haunting thriller, a new variation of psychological horror invites audiences to question the limitations of our contemporary relationships with people and spaces, and the implications of undealt trauma.
Written/Directed by Stewart Thorndike. Gayle Rankin, Hari Nef, Annabelle Dexter-Jones, and Rad Pereira star.
Why we’re excited: Haunted hotels and fragile minds pair well together in horror, as The Shining classically demonstrated.

How I Met Your Father returns after a mid-season hiatus on Tuesday, May 23 on Hulu, and last we saw the gang, Sophie (Hilary Duff), after a run-in with Himym‘s Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) and thinking she might be dating her dad (John Corbett), has decided to find her father. “I don’t think that she would’ve ever found her father. I don’t think there’s that many people in her life that were pushing her to do that,” Duff told TV Insider. “The Neil thing was, in perfect Isaac [Aptaker] and Elizabeth [Berger, executive producers] fashion, so funny, but so real and it provided growth for his character that no one saw, to know that he went along through his life to do the work and had some really lovely things happen to him like a daughter and tried to get rid of some of the predatory vibes of his past.

Francia Raisa has "zero clue" who the titular father is on "How I Met Your Father." But even if she did, her lips are sealed. "I do not think they will ever tell me, because I keep trying to figure it out," Raisa tells Popsugar. "At this point, I'm so confused, because even though I'm on the show, there are things that I don't even catch until it airs. I'm like, 'Wait a second, she said she kissed all of her friends. What does that mean?' And I didn't even hear that line until it aired."

It’s hard to introduce someone you’re dating to your friends. It’s worse when said someone walks in during an “old man joke,” as is the case in TV Insider’s exclusive sneak peek of the How I Met Your Father midseason finale. Sophie (Hilary Duff) is now dating chef Robert (John Corbett), and since he’s on his way to meet her friends, she warns, “no more old man jokes.” Jesse (Christopher Lowell) agrees. “Of course not. We want him to feel totally comfortable here. That’s why Sid put prune juice on tap,” he says, and the others are laughing just as Robert walks over. “We’re just razzing our friend because she’s dating an old guy,” Ellen (Tien Tran) explains when he asks, and Sophie reacts accordingly. “I believe that’s me,” Robert informs the others and kisses Sophie. “But you’re beautiful,” Ellen says in surprise.

“How I Met Your Father” is what dreams are made of! The Hulu series dropped a major Easter egg in the latest episode – a tongue-and-cheek reference to one of Hilary Duff‘s most memorable TV roles, “Lizzie McGuire“.
In the episode, titled “A Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Valentine’s Day,” which saw the gang revisiting their worst Valentine’s Day experiences, Sophie (Duff) reflects on a memory from when she was 13 years old.
The scene then cuts to a very familiar-looking one from “Lizzie McGuire”, which happens to be the season 2 episode, “First Kiss,” where a teenage Lizzie (a younger Duff) goes through all the stages of a relationship in mere days. In the “Lizzie McGuire” callback, Lizzie is too busy doing the whole “No, you hang up first” exchange over the phone with a boy to notice her friend, Miranda (Lalaine), getting increasingly annoyed by the second.

Aside from taking inspiration from its predecessor, “How I Met Your Father” creators Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger drew from their own experience navigating adulthood in a messy yet endearing way for the show’s sophomore season — including being locked in the stairwell of a New York skyscraper on the first day of a new job.
“This whole series is very much based on that chapter of our lives where we were living in New York and hanging out with your friends all the time, and your friends are your second family,” Berger told TheWrap of the duo’s time in the East Village while attending New York University. “We are just constantly looking back at that time and channeling those feelings: when you’re still trying to meet your person and it feels like the end of the world if you haven’t met them yet, and you’re...

As he ends the segment, he calls them adorable before plugging their sold-out concert. He adds, “you can catch me, Sandy Rivers, on the entertainment beat,” then, as an aside, continues, “demoted because of some unproven accusations, which even if true would be perfectly legal in the states in which the alleged incidents took place.” “That was one where it felt like sort of towards the end...

Masked serial killers, mean-girl cheerleaders and Alicia Silverstone as a spooky aunt with a penchant for blood-filled baked goods: Welcome to the world of Perpetrator, a new gory, kitschy horror thriller from transgressive artist-turned-genre filmmaker Jennifer Reeder.
For the follow-up to her 2019’s Knives and Skin, Reeder wanted to return to many of the tropes she explored in that well-received feature debut. Again we have a tale of the darkness that lurks beneath the clipped green lawns of American suburbia, a story of missing girls and murder packed with subtext about sexual identity and cultural conventions, and it is told in a visual mash-up of surrealist imagery and 1980s-style video gore.
But for Perpetrator Reeder decided to tell “a proper horror film.”
“I think Knives and Skin was more genre-adjacent,” says Reeder, speaking to The Hollywood Reporter from her home in Chicago ahead of the Berlinale premiere. “For this one,...

Somewhere between camp and Cronenberg (both father and son) lies Perpetrator, a freakish horror film from Jennifer Reeder that’s definitely an acquired taste — particularly if your taste includes sadistic masked murderers, plastic surgery victims, high-school cheerleaders turned robbers, and a birthday cake filled with cups of fresh hemoglobin.
This, plus lots more gore and insanity, can be found in writer-director Reeder’s fourth feature, which follows a teenage girl whose own grisly transformation happens as a killer stalks her fellow students at a quirky prep school straight out of Heathers. With a cameoing Alicia Silverstone playing a suburban auntie from hell, the Berlinale premiere should find a few cult followers at other festivals, as well as online via Shudder.
Reeder built her reputation on the fest circuit with a slew of short films combining horror movie tropes with a form of transgressive surrealism reminiscent of both Cronenberg and David Lynch.

The question that every How I Met Your Father fan wants the answer to is — who is the father? Unfortunately, it will be a long time before we know his identity, but in the meantime, it’s fun to speculate about the show’s endgame. Hilary Duff has high hopes that all of the original “How I Met Your Mother” cast members will eventually make appearances on “How I Met Your Father”.
After Cobie Smulders and Neil Patrick Harris reprised their roles as Robin and Barney on the Hulu series in the freshman finale and season 2 premiere, respectively, Duff exclusively told Et’s Denny Directo on the set of “Himyf” her ideal wish is to have the rest of the cast stop by.
“I was really nervous to work with Nph. He’s just such a stud. He’s legendary,” she said.
“Everything he does is, if he’s hosting something or he’s got a TV show on the air or he’s doing Broadway, he’s just fantastic. And so the fact that he said yes made us really excited,” Duff added. “And obviously, our goal is to hopefully collect them all.”

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for How I Met Your Father Season 2 Episode 3, “The Reset Button.”] In the February 7 episode of How I Met Your Father, Sophie (Hilary Duff) and Jesse (Christopher Lowell) hit the “reset button … sort of,” but did one question in Future Sophie’s (Kim Cattrall) conversation with her son provide a major clue as to what’s to come for them?
