Thirty years ago when Robin Thicke was 16, he recorded his first album with R&b star Brian McKnight. But the music wasn’t epic.
“[The label] was willing to put it out, but there wasn’t going to be a lot of promotion money behind it, so I said, ‘Let’s shelve it,’” he recalls.
While still recording his own music, he went on to develop his musicality by writing and producing for others, including Michael Jackson, Usher, Christina Aguilera, Pink, Jordan Knight, Brandy, Raven-Symoné, 98 Degrees, Marc Anthony, Mya, Color Me Badd, Guy Sebastian, Brownstone, Will Young, Kevon Edmonds, Ron Keating, Chante Moore and others.
But he needed to get back to making music for himself, so the early twentysomething decided he wouldn’t cut his hair until he heard his song on the radio.

It seems to be an unwritten law of pop culture that every new generation must be bequeathed with their very own, massively popular high school drama that will come to set the tone and style for their entire adolescence and beyond. Gen Z has their Pretty Little Liars and the chic-beyond-their-years kids of Riverdale. Millennials made things more salacious with Dawson’s Creek, The O.C., and the infinitely quotable Gossip Girl. But, of course, none of these shows would have existed without the sensationalistic Og teen soap that set the stage for all of their youthful schadenfreude and melodrama to unfold – Beverly Hills,...

If you jumped on the ’90s revival train in a big way last year (we’re looking at you, Kendall Jenner, the champion of bringing back every single long lost trend), the decade is continuing to have a major moment in 2017. Gap is keeping the throwback trend going with its new curated collection. The brand is bringing back 15 iconic ’90s styles from the archives, and they’re revisiting the brand’s iconic ads to go with them, fronted by (very appropriately) the most iconic supermodel of the ’90s, Naomi Campbell, who posed for the brand in 1992 wearing the pocket tee...

This episode of Lip Sync Battle sees America Ferrera face off against Amber Tamblyn, who performs rather controversially as Donald Trump. Actress Tamblyn performs Color Me Badd’s I Wanna Sex You Up but she does it as Donald Trump. The show was actually recorded back in August before the tape of Donald Trump making derogatory remarks about women was aired and she also performed as Hillary Clinton. Following the news of Trump’s ‘locker room’ talk Tamblyn shared her own account of a very nasty assault by an ex. According to reports, Spike checked with the actress that she was still Ok with airing this performance. It...read more...

Amber Tamblyn is set to compete against her The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants costar America Ferrera on Lip Sync Battle this week, and we can already tell that we're in for a treat. After speaking out against Donald Trump's lewd comments about women in a moving essay about sexual assault earlier this month, the actress decided to parody the presidential nominee by performing Color Me Badd's "I Wanna Sex You Up," complete with some seriously orange makeup. Not only does she hilariously poke fun at his campaign with posters of America's face and "I [heart] Hispanics" in the background, but she also gives her friend a lap dance. While Amber's essay was extremely heartbreaking, the fact that she refuses to let it get her down speaks volumes to her strength. Check back here for the full video after the episode airs on Spike on Oct. 19.

Spike TV will counter-program Wednesday’s third and final presidential debate with a Donald Trump performance of its own. Amber Tamblyn, as Donald Trump, will perform Color Me Badd’s “I Wanna Sex You Up” during her Lip Sync Battle with outspoken Hillary Clinton supporter America Ferrara, Wednesday at 9 Pm Et. (Check out the promo clip above.) The gag may play into Trump’s latest talk of election-cycle corruption that extends even to NBC’s Saturday Night Live. Lip Sync Batt…...

In a sneak peek for Wednesday’s episode, the former “Joan of Arcadia” actress is grinding up to her “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” costar America Ferrera while lip syncing Color Me Badd’s “I Wanna Sex You Up.” Tamblyn wears a suit with a red tie and breaks out in the running-man move before sticking out her tongue and twerking on Ferrera. Fall Out Boy and Boyz II Men narrowed the gap between pop-punk and R&B with an outsized performance of "Motownphilly" on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, closing out the show's latest "Mash Up Monday" series.
The outfit — dubbed, naturally, "Fall Out Boyz II Men" — delivered a blistering rendition of Boyz II Men's 1991 New Jack Swing smash. Fall Out Boy's pummeling power chord chug gave the song some extra heft, but not so much to drown out the song's scintillating horn riff or Boyz II Men's indelible vocals.

Last night's Bet Awards were four hours long, but I sat through all 240 minutes, and I would like to tell you: It was pretty fun. Chris Rock nailed the hosting gig, performances ranged from nostalgic (Color Me Badd!) to emotional (Lionel Richie tribute!) to shade-filled (Nicki, Nicki, Nicki). Chris Brown didn't hurt anyone. Paris Hilton even showed up! So, in case you didn't have the entirety of a Sunday night to watch a live awards show, here is a quick roundup of last night's best performances and moments. Note: We're going to link out to the video for some of these, as to avoid having to embed Bet's awful, auto-playing clips. Thank you for your understanding.Pharrell opened the show. Nearly a decade after launching the revolution, Andy Samberg returns to reign over the world he created.
Let’s back up. Samberg joined the cast of SNL in September 2005, just a month after his 27th birthday. Nobody really knew who he was, though, until December 17 of that year, when The Lonely Island’s second-ever Digital Short, “Lazy Sunday,” premiered — and almost immediately became an Internet sensation. Sure, it helped that the short’s debut coincided with the rise of YouTube, which had launched in February of 2005, and its “white guys rapping about mundane stuff” premise gave plenty of fodder for homages and parodies – but really,...

So guess who's coming to "SNL" this weekend? Well, there's a lot of people coming to SNL this weekend, but the only one you really need to bother your pretty little head with is Justin Timberlake, because he's back for his 8th hosting stint. Word on the street is that Justin will be reprising his role with Andy Samberg for another amazing, music-themed skit a la Color Me Badd. Do we remember "Mother Lover"? "D-k in a Box"? "3-Way"? Good Will Hunting came out fifteen years ago, so it's time to look back at the movie and the movie stars that came out of it (and, in the case of our conversation with Matt Damon and Gus Van Sant, the movie's "Color Me Badd" haircuts). So it's only appropriate that Boston magazine has a fun oral history of the film. Besides rehashing some old stories (Mel Gibson was once attached to direct) and new (Robin Williams improvised the classic final line of the film: “Son of a bitch stole my line”), the piece reminds us that Ben and Matt are still adorable together. Affleck, after Damon admits the two of them cried when watching Williams and Stellan Skarsgard act their writing: "We did tear up a little bit. But why is Matt saying this shit? It was a story that warmed many a "Beverly Hills, 90210" fan's heart: Twenty years after their characters got together while Brenda was in Paris, Jennie Garth and Luke Perry had fallen for one another in real life.
That was the word from the National Enquirer, which claims that Perry and Garth felt sparks when they filmed an Old Navy ad together. "There is an electricity between them that has been revived after all these years. It just happened," a source tells the Enquirer.
Alas, like meeting Color Me Badd at a hotel but at the same time finding out your mom was having an affair (that was Donna, we know, but go with it), it was too good to be true. Although the two have remained friends since their "90210" days, they're not dating, Us Weekly reports.
Oh well. We'll always have (the time when Brenda was in) Paris.

Aylin is excited, as she feels that she’s the sexiest Turkish Muslim who ever lived, while Nellie expresses nervousness at the prospect.
Aylin: I’m sexy and I know it
Nellie admits that she’s nervous about getting sultry
The group’s “Homework Assignment” is a performance of Color Me Badd’s “I Wanna Sex You Up” — perhaps a song best left in 1991.
Naya Rivera
Week 4’s guest judge is … Glee’s Santana Lopez, Naya Rivera, who, luckily for the contestants, seems much nicer than the uber-bitchy cheerleader she plays.

What this week’s episode of The Glee Project lacked in suspense, it made up for in peculiar delights. We got the Color Me Badd flashback we didn’t even know we wanted. We received a translation of Kelis’ “Milkshake” lyrics rooted entirely in economic theory. And we even got video director Erik White sending an unruly contestant to the naughty corner.
Things kicked off with our contenders squealing with delight after finding out the week’s theme would be sexuality. Then again, the contestants would probably squeal with delight if casting director Robert Ulrich was replaced by Jigsaw and...

The second season cast of "The Glee Project" tackling sexuality turns out to be about as sexy as Lars von Trier directing an episode of "iCarly." It's either the ugliest cute thing or the cutest ugly thing you've ever seen, and either way it's a bad combination. Here's how it started: This week's theme: Sexuality Homework assignment: Color Me Badd's "I Wanna Sex You Up" Guest mentor: Naya Rivera Aylin is thrilled -- it's her week to shine! (But once again she references how angry/ashamed/upset her parents will be seeing her as a sexual being.) Nellie is concerned because she's never...

Last week on The Glee Project, Ryan decided to save everyone after their impressive displays of vulnerability. This week, they'll have to show their a very different side for Sexuality week.
This is the point last year at which it became clear that fan favorite Cameron was going to have some issues. Will there be another squeaky-clean contender to follow in his hipster footsteps? Or is this year's group a more randy bunch?
Read on to find out...
The contenders are even more excited to find out that this is Sexuality week. Aylin is way more excited than she perhaps should be. Nellie is nervous (again with that nickname) having never before seen a guy naked. And Michael? Well, he's experienced, but he thinks math is sexy, so just how experienced he might be is anybody's guess.
For the Homework Assignment, they'll be singing "I Want To Sex You Up" by Color Me Badd.

Plus, a fan favorite is sent packing as the contestants struggle in sexuality week! Sex is not always a fun time, as proven by the June 26 episode of The Glee Project where contestants lost their mojo in the wake of "sexuality week." So which of this season's contestants was found to be least sexy? Surprise guest mentor Naya Rivera may be extremely confident in her sexuality on Glee, but the contestants on season two of The Glee Project have a lot to learn if they hope to reach Naya's caliber! The cast struggled through a rendition of Color Me Badd's "I Wanna Sex You Up," but Charlie won simply by beat boxing through the song! Apparently, it's the way to Naya's heart, so Charlie should thank Mr. Sexy himself, Justin Timberlake, for that one! Charlie's win must have inflated his ego a bit as he flirted with Aylin throughout his entire vocal recording,...

Hey girl, this will likely come as no surprise to fans of Ryan Gosling: The 31-year-old "Drive" star was adorable at 10 years old and now there's even more proof in the form of a new video clip of Gosling performing in a 1991 talent show.
The footage captures Gosling dressed in a Color Me Badd-reminiscent shirt and Hammer pants singing classics like "When a Man Loves a Woman" and C+C Music Factory's "Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)." One thing is clear -- even at just 10, Gosling was already a born entertainer. Watch as Ryan tears up the floor while his dance partner hangs in the background wishing she had one-one hundredth of the talent Gosling does.
Be sure to stick with it through the leap into the crowd where -- if he wasn't 10 -- Gosling would be doing a bang up job of auditioning for "Magic Mike.

It's a legal battle that would have put Hollywood in a spin back in 1992
Close your eyes for a moment and pretend it's 1992 again. Your Global Hypercolour T-shirt is forming a perfect thermochromatic triangle between your armpits and your bumcrack. The mixtape on your Walkman is segueing between Rem's Man on the Moon and Ain't No Doubt by Jimmy Nail. People are predicting big things for Hangin' With Mr Cooper. And the two biggest stars around are Kevin Costner and Stephen Baldwin.
Costner is already king of Hollywood, having released Dances With Wolves, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and The Bodyguard in three successive years. And, after showing so much promise in Born on the Fourth of July a few years ago, it seems natural to assume that Baldwin will go the same way. If only Costner and Baldwin would team up on a project, it could be bigger...

We haven’t done a random ‘music argument’ list in a while, so here’s a topic for discussion: Really lame bands with really intense band names. As in, bands whose actual music doesn’t live up to the aggressiveness, violence, or intensity implied by their band name, often to hilarious degrees. A Crucial Distinction: “Lame” does not necessarily mean “Bad”. I enjoy many of the bands on this list – I enjoy Billy Joel too, for example, but Billy Joel is overwhelmingly lame, and these things are not mutually exclusive. Here are The 15 Lamest Bands With Intense Names, ordered by increasing discrepancy between “Name Intensity” and “Music Lameness”, using official science: 15. Five For Fighting The band name connotes “Five Minutes” for a fighting penalty in ice hockey, or just five people who are “for” fighting, two concepts that are both slightly incongruous with the ever-so-whinily delivered lyric “Only a man...

Although Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have stayed mum on their rumored relationship, one "Hunger Games" movie night, a well-documented walk of shame and countless dinner dates later, the cat's out of the bag.
So, with the help of Spotify, we've curated a playlist to document the love birds' path from friends to friendlier.
Can you see "Kimye" jamming out to these classics? We sure can.
"Heartless" by Kanye West
The ink on Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries' divorce papers is nowhere near dry -- "how could you be so cold," Kim?
"Maneater" by Nelly Furtado
Who's kounting when it comes to Kim's laundry list of exes?
"We Found Love" by Rihanna
Kimye certainly "found love in a hopeless place." Hollywood is where relationships go to die.
"I Wanna Sex You Up" by Color Me Badd
We have a feeling that Kanye isn't the only guy who's used this pickup line on Kim.

The show's '90s incarnation was known for bringing in big musical guest stars (Color Me Badd in the early years and Christina Aguilera at the diner's After Dark club were standouts), and the current reboot continues to follow suit.
'90210' has had cameos by musicians like N.E.R.D., DJ Samantha Ronson, Nelly, The Veronicas and even Snoop Dogg, and an insider tells us exclusively that there's another rock band coming soon, and this one will be performing at Liam's new bar. Keep reading for more ...

Things we learned from the latest two-hour installment of The X Factor: Nicole Shirthanger realizes she’s not L.A. Reid or Simon Cowell — she’s sorry about that! — but she’s a really hard worker. Paula Abdul “represents everything a woman wants to be” (at least according to a spelling-challenged member of all-female vocal act 2Squar’D who has never heard of Marie Curie, Madeline Albright, Mother Teresa, or countless other powerful ladies who’ve graced our humble planet with their presence). And there’s nothing ominous — nothing ominous at all! — about a middle-aged man in a shirt unbuttoned...

Twenty years ago today (September 24), Nirvana released Nevermind, and the world hasn't been the same since.
The album would go on to usher in rock's great renaissance, cause a seismic shift in popular culture, bring the underground to the mainstream and make unwilling stars out of three rather scruffy guys from the Pacific Northwest (Ok, so Dave Grohl was technically from Northern Virginia, but he lived in Seattle while they were making the album).
And while we'd like to say the earth shifted slightly on its axis the moment that first box of Neverminds was cracked open, we'd be exaggerating. Back then, Nirvana were relative unknowns, and with popular music dominated by the likes of Whitney Houston, Natalie Cole and Color Me Badd...

It's one thing for "No Strings Attached" and "Friends With Benefits" to feature carbon copy concepts, executed nearly exactly the same way, but it's downright eerie when those similarities cross over to the soundtrack as well. The tracklist for the fuckbuddy comedy "Friends With Benefits" has been revealed and you'd be forgiven if you thought the same music supervisor worked on both movies. Where 'Attached' had Color Me Badd, 'Benefits' has Kriss Kross. For an acoustic cover, 'Attached' had Hugo's "99 Problems" and 'Friends' has Grant Lee Phillips doing "Boys Don't Cry." Jt started the show insisting that he wouldn't be singing during his latest appearance, only to segue into a ditty during which he busted out his signature falsetto, serenaded a blushing audience member and brought it on home with some soulful trills.
But Jt didn't stay on the anti-singing kick for long, popping up in the first sketch as an overeager street marketer in a beer-bottle costume armed with booze-friendly versions of pop hits. Going up against side-eyes from a prudish,...

When Andy Samberg and Justin Timberlake do musical parody, expectations are ridiculously high. Dick in a Box and Mother Lover are previous SNL shorts that were huge viral hits. So, how do they deal with the high expectations that typically kill a good joke? How about adding Lady Gaga for another parody of early 90's smooth R&B-cum-Color Me Badd song satire.

The No Strings Attached soundtrack. Ivan Reitman is a variable director at best. The good will he generated with Ghostbusters is pretty much eternal (and tellingly he’s set to revisit the series with Ghostbusters 3), but he’s also single-handedly responsible for Arnold Schwarzeneggar’s “funny period”, having directed Twins, Kindergarten Cop and Junior. He obviously knew better than to get involved with Jingle All The Way, but that hardly expunges him, especially when you throw in a whole load of other damp squibs including Six Days And Seven Nights, Evolution and My Super Ex-Girlfriend. It’s particularly disappointing then to find him responsible for relegating Natalie Portman from Aronofsky’s dark impresario to Ashton Kutcher co-star. It’s hard being a woman in Hollywood, at least it is if you’re talented. You take the lousy generic rom-com leads opposite the Kutchers and Butlers of the world or...

The veteran comedian busted out his guffaw-inducing skills from his sketch-comedy past to punch up a slew of skits, churning out laughs as he played everything from a questionable tantric-sex guru to a randy failed soul singer.
Carrey's opening monologue started things off on an optimistic note, as the actor affably joked about staying upbeat as the end of the world nears. "When everyone around you bursts into flames, it's time for s'mores," Carrey cheerily quipped. Then he gleefully proposed to an audience member, reminding her that "First of all, I'm Jim Carrey.
