Exclusive: Quibi’s struggles since launching in April did not stem from a lack of promotion. As it looks for a rebound after a pause for reassessment, new third-party research provided to Deadline shows the startup is starting to blow the trumpets again, only in a different key.
Looking to break through in a crowded streaming field, Jeffrey Katzenberg’s startup bought multiple TV ad slots on the Super Bowl and the Oscars following a splashy presentation in Las Vegas at CES. The return on that investment hasn’t fully materialized. In its first 90 days, during a free trial period, the streaming app was downloaded 5.6 million times, the company said last month. Only a small percentage of those downloads converted to subscribers paying $5 a month or $8 for an ad-free version.
While it disputes outside gauges of subscriber levels, calling one estimate of an 8% conversion rate of free trials to paid...

Jeffrey Katzenberg’s WndrCo Invests $30 Million In Restaurant Recommendation Service The Infatuation
Restaurant recommendation service The Infatuation received a $30 million investment from WndrCo, the media holding company co-founded by Hollywood mogul Jeffrey Katzenberg.
The Infatuation was a passion project for two former music industry executives, Chris Stang and Andrew Steinthal, who were looking for a way to recommend restaurants and bars to friends. Since its founding in 2009, it has expanded to more than two dozen cities.
The service has created a novel way of reaching hungry consumers, via the Web, Instagram (under the hashtag #Eeeeeats), and via a text messaging service called Text Rex. The Infatuation also hosts and produces more than 50 community events annually, including its large-scale food festival, Eeeeeatscon.
WndrCo’s investment will reportedly help The Infatuation expand into more cities, improve its technology and venture into the user-generated content space. The Infatuation will look to build out its own brand, and that of the legendary restaurant review brand, Zagat,...

Mixcloud announced that it closed $11.5 million from WndrCo, the next-generation media investment company whose founders include longtime Hollywood player Jeffrey Katzenberg.
It’s the first outside fundraise for the U.K.-based long-form audio streaming company, whose tagline is “making radio better.” Mixcloud said it will use the capital to expand the company globally — including in the U.S. — and diversify the platform, which may potentially include subscription-based offerings.
With the funding, two WndrCo partners will join Mixcloud’s board: Ann Daly, former president of DreamWorks Animation (which was headed by Katzenberg), and Anthony Saleh, manager of hip-hop stars Nas and Future.
Last fall, Mixcloud entered into a direct licensing agreement with Warner Music Group and Mixcloud is said to be in talks with Sony and Universal Music Group as well. For its audio programming, Mixcloud has used statutory radio licenses to cover its music use.

Netflix and DreamWorks Animation have announced that they are expanding their current deal, and there seems to be some pretty cool content coming along with it. Netflix will be the home of several new original series that DreamWorks Animation will develop. Those series include Guillermo del Toro's Trollhunters and a new reimagining of the classic 80s animated series Voltron! The deal also gives Netflix the streaming rights to the DreamWorks Animation feature film library.
When Trollhunters was originally announced, it was supposed to be an animated feature film. It looks like things have changed since it will be a series. Del Toro previously talked about why he was going to take on Trollhunters saying:
"I wanted very much to develop a story that could be written for kids but dealt with a genre that was scary. It essentially combines fairy tales with modern times and is about how difficult it is to be kid.

It’s a low bar. But the projection by the DreamWorks Animation CEO in a conference call with analysts should reassure investors who feared that the company would have to record an impairment charge for its summer release about a snail who dreams about competing in the Indy 500. The film, which cost about $127M to produce, has generated about $246.1M from worldwide box offices — far below early expectations. Fox is still recouping its distribution costs. As a result, DreamWorks Animation recognized just $6.4M from the film in Q3 largely from China and South Korea, where Fox is not the distributor. Those squeals turned to groans however (equally as annoying a noise, you’ll agree), when the news just disappeared.
Well, get your ear plugs at the ready guys as those squishy faced little buggers are officially back as DreamWorks COO Ann Daly announced recently that her company has now purchased the full intellectual property rights to the franchise and the world is about to go Troll crazy once more. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter Daly said:
“Trolls is one of those rare, proven and universally adored brands.

Remember Trolls? They were ugly little dolls with crazy, brightly colored hair that were super-popular for awhile in the '90s. If DreamWorks Animation Skg has anything to say about it, you're going to be seeing a whole lot more of the funky toys in the near future. The animation company has acquired the worldwide rights to license Trolls and related products.
The question is: Should they bother?
Sure, Trolls were one of those big fad toys that seem to pop up every couple of years. Like Cabbage Patch Kids, pogs and Beanie Babies, every kid in the universe had to have a Troll doll in their heyday. But that was a long time ago. Is the world ready to be inundated with Trolls again?
Unlike many franchises that production companies want to reboot, Trolls lack much in the way of a story. They just were. Originally naked, Trolls rapidly gained costumes of all sorts,...

Here’s some news that makes us wonder whether Jeffrey Katzenberg or someone else at DreamWorks Animation has become a feverish troll doll collector. Because, not content with buying the rights to make a film out of the creepy plastic toys, the company is now going all Verruca Salt and snapping up the brand. DreamWorks put a Troll film into development in 2010, but apparently thinks that it’s enough of a worldwide brand to be worth grabbing up. American Girl executive Shawn Dennis will be overseeing it for the studio, where she’ll help it put out toys, books, games and other licenced merchandise.“Trolls is a brand with over fifty years of deep heritage and we are thrilled to bring this iconic, multi-generational property to DreamWorks Animation,” says chief operating officer Ann Daly in a statement picked up by Variety. “We have big plans for this franchise and Shawn...

This story first appeared in the Dec. 14 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. Right hand man? Try right-hand women. At DreamWorks Animation, the proverbial C-suite and creative stables are filled with a disproportionate number for a studio of the fairer sex. Among top-tier management, Jeffrey Katzenberg's Nos. 2, 4 and 5 are female: COO Ann Daly, chief accounting officer Heather O'Connor and worldwide marketing chief Anne Globe, respectively. The CEO and just about all of the other top execs have landed new employment deals, DreamWorks Animation says in an SEC filing. Jeffrey Katzenberg‘s agreement, which was due to expire in April 2014, now runs through October 23, 2017 and guarantees him an annual salary of $2.5M, up from $1 — an amount that’s more common in Silicon Valley when execs own large stakes in their companies. But his long-term equity incentive awards were reduced to a target of $4.5M from $8M. Terms also allow him to be reimbursed for using a private jet for business-related travel, and for security services. COO Ann Daly also has a new agreement that, like Katzenberg’s, runs through October 2017. Her base salary will rise to $1.5M a year from $1M, and could provide her with cash incentives that will hit $1.5M beginning next year, twice her current take. nm3682079 autoAndrew Chang[/link] plans to remain General...

About a month after "How to Train Your Dragon" flew through theaters, DreamWorks knew they wanted a television series, sequel, live show and online virtual world to keep their franchise breathing fire. Now, just ahead of the film's DVD and Blu-ray releases on October 15, a 3-D theatrical sequel has been confirmed for 2013, and Cartoon Network has revealed that they will host the TV show, which will follow the continuing adventures of Hiccup and Toothless on a weekly basis.

Yesterday we reported some news on DreamWorks' sequel to How To Train Your Dragon, and how the original cast of the first film is coming back to reprise their roles. Today, Cartoon Network has announced that How To Train Your Dragon is also being developed into a weekly TV series as well.
I loved the original film, and it would be great if the sequel and this series ended up being really solid productions. Regardless of what us adults think, this is all being done for the kids, so if they enjoy that's all that matters. I just think it would be a bonus if we could enjoy it as well.
What do you all think of How To Train Your dragon being turned into a TV series? Will you watch it?

Despite growing revenue, DreamWorks Animation earned 6% less in its second quarter than it did in the same frame a year ago as rising costs ate into profits, the company said Tuesday.
Dwa earned $24 million on revenue that rose 20% to $158 million. The financial results surpassed expectations and the stock rose more than 3% in after-hours trading after gaining 1% to $32.08 during the regular session.
The company also said its board has authorized a new $150 million stock buyback program.
The revenue increase came courtesy of "Shrek Forever After" and "How to Train Your Dragon," both of which are hit movies by any standard even though they were viewed early on as mild disappointments for the animation studio.
Company CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg boasted of 13 Dwa hits in a row and predicted 2010 would be the studio's biggest boxoffice year. He wasn't exactly going out on a limb, considering Dwa will release three films this year, more...

We didn't provide a ton of coverage of Monsters Vs. Aliens when it was released theatrically, but considering 3D technology is such a hot topic nowadays, we thought this latest bit of news about the film's DVD format was topical and timely: Despite the fact that 3D showings accounted for 58% of the CG-animated film’s opening weekend box office take, home viewers won't have the same choice as it's only being released in 2D on DVD and Blu-ray.
According to Home Media Magazine, the InTru 3-D technology developed by Dreamworks and Intel worked wonders in theaters with digital projectors but simply couldn’t be replicated in the average consumer home. Chris Chinnock, co-founder and managing director of the 3D@Home Consortium says, "The only viable option was to do anaglyph or color coding, and doing [that] would compromise the quality of the product."
But 3D fans needn't despair. To satisfy their demand,...

Disney’s been at it for years and now rival animation studio DreamWorks is bringing one of their big screen hits to the small screen. Last year’s summer hit, Kung Fu Panda followed the antics of tubby martial artist wannabe Po (voiced by Jack Black) and the spin-off cartoon will continue his adventures (though it’s doubted that Black will reprise his voice duties, instead replaced by a cheaper sound-alike). Imaginatively titled Kung Fu Panda: The Series, the 26-episode effort will be a union with kids cable channel, Nickelodeon following in the footsteps of their previous collaboration, The Penguins of Madagascar, which (yes, you guessed it) centres on the ingenious penguins from DreamWorks hits Madagascar and its sequel, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa.
The penguins’ caper premiered two months ago on Us TV and has proved a hit, scoring big numbers in the ratings and getting the thumbs up from many critics.

The award-winning 2008 animated flick "Kung Fu Panda" is being turned into a TV series. Kids' channel Nickelodeon has ordered 26 episodes of the DreamWorks Animation creation.
The cartoon, which featured the voices of Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogen, Lucy Liu, David Cross, Ian McShane and Angelina Jolie, dominated the Annie Awards last year with 11 wins.
Black also won the Best Animated Voice in this year's Nickolodeon's Kids' Choice Awards for his role of the plump panda Po.

Kung Fu Panda was a great big hit last summer, and I have no doubt that the 2011 sequel will also roll in the dough, but DreamWorks and Nickelodeon have agreed bridge the gap between the two films with a new Panda TV series along the lines of the Penguins of Madagascar series.
Said DreamWorks animation's Ann Daly, "The characters we created for Kung Fu Panda are well suited to be further developed in new and exciting ways." While a lot of people might be down on the idea, I actually think an animated show is a better idea than a pile of movie sequels.
