A month away from potentially receiving his first Emmy nomination, Michael Shannon is branching out into directing with “Eric Larue,” Brett Neveu’s adaptation of his own 2002 play. Following a mother seeking some semblance of normalcy in a town rocked by the horrific act of violence perpetrated by her son against three classmates, the movie just premiered at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival to significant acclaim for its leading lady, veteran character actor Judy Greer. Considering the subject, comparisons to “We Need to Talk About Kevin” and “Mass” are unsurprising.
Alexander Skarsgård co-stars as Greer’s born-again husband, and Paul Sparks (with whom Shannon has worked on “Boardwalk Empire” and “Waco”), Alison Pill (“The Newsroom”), Tracy Letts (“Lady Bird”), Annie Parisse (“The Following”), Kate Arrington (“George & Tammy”) and Nation Sage Henrikson (“Shameless”) comprise the rest of the main cast. David Rooney (The Hollywood Reporter) calls the acting “uncommonly strong across...

An ensemble of gifted actors effectively play against type in Michael Shannon’s quietly powerful directing debut, none more so than Judy Greer, outwardly numbed by sorrow but raw inside as a mother whose son shot and killed three high school classmates. While the subject matter inevitably invites comparison with Mass, that well-received 2021 chamber piece — also a first feature by an actor, Fran Kranz — kept its focus tight on two sets of parents on either side of a similar tragedy. Eric Larue casts a wider gaze, taking in the broader community and the religious leaders fumbling or manipulating the conversation about healing.
Shannon’s deep roots in Chicago theater are evident in his choice of material and his success at assembling a first-rate cast — uncommonly strong across the board for a modestly scaled indie like this.

A former preschool teacher from “the city,” Sara Davis (Emma Roberts) had been told by so many parents of the euphoric sense of love they cultivated the moment their child was born. She hoped it would wash over her upon giving birth to her and husband Alex’s (John Gallagher Jr.) son Liam. But it simply never presented itself. It eluded her to the point of seeing a psychiatrist about postpartum depression and he agreed there was a problem. She subsequently rejected the idea of medication due to breast feeding being the only time a connection seemed possible. So the Davises decide moving to the country might jog her out of her “funk” instead. Perhaps purchasing the site of a murder-suicide wasn’t the best throw-in value, though.

During the last two years, isolation and its many horrors have haunted everyone. Naturally, genre filmmakers are best equipped to see the creative potential in pandemic fears — and its limitations. In her latest feature, prolific horror auteur Jennifer Reeder makes mighty use of both, crafting an inventive ghost story for the video call era. Arriving at a dramatically zany conclusion, “Night’s End” follows the unraveling of an aimless divorcé through his misguided attempts at establishing a YouTube presence. Taking place entirely within the confines of his dreary bachelor pad, Though the film falters under the confines of a small budget and Covid-safe crews, thanks to Reeder’s ingenuity and love of classic horror, she strong arms it over the finish line to an enjoyably wacky finale.

Do you ever just want the night to end, but the night’s end seems to never come? This is the epitome of Jennifer Reeder’s apt Night’s End. The Knives and Skin director, with writer Brett Neveu, craft a film about one man’s horrific night. But what is, at first, a frightening, introspective, and isolated ghost story, takes an unfortunate nose dive. The audience is suddenly content and relieved at the night’s end, more so than even the protagonist.
A horror film needs to nail the atmosphere, and Reeder nails that spookiness immediately as she directs Christopher Rejano’s camera to move slowly towards a door. Like a spirit floating just above the ground and lingering outside in the hopes of being let in. It creaks as it opens into a dimly lit, newly occupied apartment. The unemployed divorced father who lives there, Ken (Geno Walker), is found counting down from 10. Then,...

About halfway through director Jennifer Reeder and writer Brett Neveu’s Night’s End, a character explains to Ken Barber (Geno Walker) that the ghost haunting his apartment may in fact be haunted herself. Colin Albertson (Lawrence Grimm), the occult author whose book inspired Ken to create a “spirit jar” in hopes of exorcising his unwanted guest, details research into the ghost’s identity which would point to her own mother becoming a demonic presence desperate to torture her child’s trapped soul in a “ghost loop.” While that’s a whole lot of over-the-top nonsense on its surface, the act itself proves a metaphorical interpretation of Ken’s own destructive cycle. His divorced father moved cities for a fresh start only to find himself suffering from a reclusive lifestyle of fear and regret.

Jennifer Reeder, director of the highly-regarded Knives + Skin, is back behind the camera for Night’s End, a film that feels very apt given the past few years – featuring a character who spends his time online, working from home (aren’t we all?). With the film’s plot playing out in a series of Zoom-like calls, given the lead characters apparent agoraphobia.
The film tells the story of Ken Barber, an anxious shut-in, who moves into a new apartment. He spends his time making self-help YouTube videos and experimenting in amateur taxidermy. However, Ken’s life is turned upside down by the apparent haunting of his new home. People often make comparisons between Jennifer Reeder’s work and that of David Lynch, and when they do so, they usually go on to talk about characters or setting. There’s a particular kind of slow tracking shot, however, at which both those directors excel, whilst others struggle in vain to capture it. It’s used at key points in this film, inside a shared building, creeping up towards the door of a flat. A simple enough movement, but it will send a shudder down your spine.
Ken (Geno Walker) hasn’t left the flat for some time. We learn from his online conversations with his friends and his ex-wife Kelsey (Kate Arrington) that he has become agoraphobic; he has also had a serious drinking problem and has struggled to cope with many aspects of day to day life. He’s trying to get back on track now, making arrangements...

Jennifer Reeder’s bonafides as a horror director — particularly one attuned to the terrifying travails of the female teenage experience, a la her breakout “Knives and Skin” — are unimpeachable, but she’s never been eager to do the same thing twice. When it came time to tackle her next feature film, Reeder was searching for something new, and a little scary: putting her own stamp on a story about not just a man, but the kind of man too often unable to express his own fears.
In the Shudder-produced “Night’s End,” written by Brett Neveu, Reeder found exactly what she was looking for, a fresh injection of perspective and theme that the genre needs now.
“I had been looking for a script with an adult male as a lead, partially because I had an idea of what I could do through a kind of feminist lens with a particular kind of male lead,...

"It's really happening. None of it is fake." Shudder has unveiled the official trailer for an indie horror film titled Night's End, the latest from director Jennifer Reeder. It's playing on Shudder at the end of March. An anxious shut-in moves into a haunted apartment, hiring a stranger to perform an exorcism which quickly takes a horrific turn. Pretty vague description. This seems to be another pandemic thriller, focusing on one man alone in his apartment while everyone else connects with him digitally. A realistic take on Zoom horror with "what if this was really happening to him?" The film stars Geno Walker, with Michael Shannon, Kate Arrington, Daniel Kyri, Theo Germaine, Lawrence Grimm, Morgan S. Reesh, and also Felonious Munk. This looks quite creepy! Some nice horror vibes. Here's the official US trailer (+ poster) for Jennifer Reeder's Night's End, direct from YouTube: In Night's End, an anxious shut-in...

The final episode of Mare of Easttown limited series drew four million viewers over the holiday weekend across HBO and HBO Max, with nearly three million viewers Sunday night (all platforms), marking a series high for both linear and digital, according to HBO. The finale also set the record as the most watched episode of an Original Series on HBO Max during its first 24 hours of availability, besting the finales of recent hits The Undoing and The Flight Attendant over the same period of time.
Mare of Easttown also joins The Undoing as the only series in HBO’s history to see consecutive growth week-to-week. Viewership still is expected to grow further via additional telecasts and digital viewing.
Created by Brad Ingelsby and directed by Craig Zobel, the seven-part Easttown stars Kate Winslet as Mare Sheehan, a small-town Pennsylvania detective who investigates a local murder as life crumbles around her.

"It's time for rock 'n roll made by men!" "Middle-aged men..." Gravitas Ventures has debuted a trailer for an indie rock 'n roll comedy called The Incoherents, marking the feature directorial debut of illustrator / filmmaker Jared Barel. The film stars & is written by Jeff Auer, who plays a bored, 40-something paralegal who hasn’t let go of his dream of rock stardom. It dawns on him that reunions of The Pixies, Soundgarden and other indie rock bands from the 90's could inspire his former group, The Coherents, to come together again. It also stars Walter Hoffman, Casey Clark, Amy Carlson, Annette O'Toole, Kate Arrington, Robert McKay, and Christine Chang. Alex Emanuel, who stars in the role of Jimmy, served as music supervisor, and along with Jeff Auer, wrote the original songs the band performed in the film. Also featuring music by Stew, Jimmy Gnecco, Fiona Silver, and 60/40. Looks like a mid-life-crisis-meets-rocking-out film.

In today’s film news roundup, box office reporting is going away temporarily, Hollywood Teamsters have job opportunities, comedy “The Incoherents” finds a home and Fathom Events postpones more than a dozen releases.
Box Office Reporting
The coronavirus pandemic and the closure of most movie theaters has led to a temporary suspension of North American box office reporting by Comscore, the industry’s box office tracker.
The decision came after Disney announced it would stop global box office reporting, given the current large number of theater shutdowns around the globe.
“Due to this unprecedented situation, Comscore will be temporarily suspending our usual Sunday North American Top 10 Estimates, Global chart and commentary,” Comscore said in a statement. “We will update the status of studio reporting on Monday.”
Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, told Variety that there will be some revenues this weekend, thanks partly to drive-in movie theaters that have remained open.

Jennifer Reeder’s “Knives and Skin” will test the limits of viewer patience. The positive qualities lie in the surrealistic film’s bold cinematography, distinctive use of music, and diversity of cast, though that’s not enough to redeem this tedious viewing experience. Following a festival run that began at the Berlinale, IFC Midnight is giving the film a limited release in theaters Dec. 6, day-and-date with VOD.

Writer/director Jennifer Reeder has been making off-beat movies for some time but her latest feature film Knives and Skin easily takes the cake as one of the most unique hodgepodges of a movie I've seen all year.
The mystery begins when Carolyn Harper disappears. As the small town becomes engulfed in the mystery of what happened to Carolyn, the women in town, both young and old, seem to come to a collective realization that there's more wrong than simply Carolyn's disappearance.
Marika Engelhardt, Audrey Francis, Tim Hopper and Kate Arrington star.
While I can appreciate Reeder's vision of a fresh new take on the coming-of-age story and her revamp of the tired "dead girl" trope, I...

"Can you feel that?" IFC has debuted an official trailer for an indie neo-noir titled Knives and Skin, the latest from artist / filmmaker Jennifer Reeder. This first premiered at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year, and also stopped by the Tribeca, Fantasia, FrightFest, Helsinki, and Vienna Film Festivals. Knives and Skin is a mystical teen noir that follows a young girl's disappearance in the rural Midwest and its effect on teens and parents. Described as a surreal "teen fever dream", the massive ensemble indie cast in this includes Marika Engelhardt, Grace Smith, Ireon Roach, Kayla Carter, Tim Hopper, Kate Arrington, Audrey Francis, Ty Olwin, Jalen Gilbert, Raven Whitley, Emma Ladji, James Vincent Meredith, Robert T. Cunningham, Tony Fitzpatrick, and Marilyn Dodds Frank. This seems pretty cool, but not so sure it's as unique as it claims to be. Worth a look anyway. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Jennifer...

Exclusive: IFC Midnight has acquired North American rights to Jennifer Reeder’s coming-of-age thriller Knives And Skin, which played at Berlin, Tribeca, and Fantasia.
The deal was negotiated by IFC Films Evp of Acquisitions and Productions Arianna Bocco and acquisitions coordinator Adam Koehler, with CAA/Gersh on behalf of the filmmakers. Next festivals for the feature will be Fantastic Fest and Deauville, ahead of IFC’s release in December, which will include a theatrical component.
Pic follows the investigation of a young girl’s disappearance in a surreal rural Midwest town, led by an inexperienced local sheriff. Unusual coping techniques develop among the traumatized small-town residents, as a series of secrets are revealed. The backdrop of trauma colors quintessential rituals — dances, courtship, football games — in which the teenagers experience an accelerated loss of innocence while their parents are forced to confront adulthood failures.

A fun ride, spiked with touching gravity, is not a shabby way to end the movie summer. Thanks to Jillian Bell, a comic force of nature with real dramatic chops, that’s what you get in Brittany Runs a Marathon. The glorious Bell, who stole every scene she graced in 22 Jump Street, plays the title role, an aggressively upbeat twentysomething who gets a medical wake-up call about weight, high blood pressure, and Adderall addiction — her body mass index is in the obese zone. Brittany barely gets by working as an usher at an Off-Broadway theater,...

The disappearance of a female teenager in a small rural town in America starts an almost domino effect of problems for the people that knew her… Knives and Skin is part coming of age drama part dark thriller and it manages to feel like nothing I have seen before.
Director Jennifer Reeder definitely has a certain vision and sees it out completely, even if, for me, it fails to work almost as much as it works. Although we assume it is set in present day, it almost feels like it is set in its own little universe with the fashion, dialogue and sets there own unique thing.
I did enjoy much of the set and costume design though. The...

When Laura Palmer is found dead and wrapped in plastic, her tragic end ripples throughout David Lynch’s Twin Peaks to devastating effect. An outsider in Agent Cooper enters the town to decipher the circumstances surrounding her demise with a cheery disposition that never fades—a direct contrast to the idyllic scene of nature and diner pies soon torn down as though a curtain clenched by the former homecoming queen’s hands, her final wish being the exposure of what lies beneath. It’s a dark tale layered in sin, a pervasive human evil attacking everyone within reach until even the purest of heart succumbs. Lynch paints it with a stylized, hyper-real affectation highlighting society’s desperation to survive its intrinsically pessimistic machinations, the melodrama amplified until happiness becomes rendered as fantasy.
What if this wasn’t the case, though? What if Laura’s murder was instead a sacrifice that...

There have been some mighty big deals at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, but there may be no entry there this year that seems more of a slam-dunk for a major breakout than “Brittany Runs a Marathon.” This terrifically engaging debut feature by playwright Paul Downs Colaizzano is the best kind of “crowdpleaser”: one that earns every emotional beat that might seem formulaic in four out of five similar enterprises.
Drawn from the actual experiences of the writer-director’s best friend, also named Brittany, the inspirational story of an overweight New York woman’s long hard road to improvement — not just figure- or health-wise, but also in how she views herself and other people — is sure to become a favorite for those facing similar issues, or indeed anyone who needs a dose of motivational encouragement. It’s also a whip-smart comedy with some real emotional depth that could...

Michael Shannon can easily be described as Hollywood’s secret weapon. He’s a reliable working actor whose versatility onscreen has seen him emerge from Michael Bay’s Pearl Harbor to appear opposite Eminem in 8 Mile, earn an Oscar nomination in Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet’s highly anticipated onscreen reunion Revolutionary Road and walk away unscathed from Man of Steel, in which he played the critically panned blockbuster’s main baddie, General Zod. He’s repeatedly worked with directors that include Jeff Nichols, Liza Johnson, Michael Bay, Siofra Campbell and Werner Herzog.
In fact, Vulture even gave him that title in 2016 when he was promoting the back-to-back releases of Nocturnal Animals, which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting actor, and Loving, the latter of which most fans probably didn’t even realize he was in until the actor suddenly appeared onscreen as a photographer who captures the story of Richard (Joel Edgerton) and Mildred...

Michael Shannon is probably just as surprised as you are that he’s nominated at the 2017 Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his work as Lt. Bobby Andes in Nocturnal Animals.
When the nominations were announced on Tuesday morning, many believed that Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s name would be heard after he was a surprise nomination and win at the Golden Globes for the same category. But it was Shannon, who delivered a scene-stealing performance and earned a Critics' Choice Awards, who was nominated alongside Mahershala Ali (Moonlight), Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water), Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea) and Dev Patel (Lion). Shannon is the film’s sole nomination.

There’s a riveting moment in the middle of Richard Greenberg’s new play, “Our Mother’s Brief Affair,” which opened Wednesday at Mtc’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. A twin brother and sister face the audience to give us the backstory on the real-life person with whom their mother might have had an affair. The play, after a long 40 minutes, comes to life as we listen to historical details about a relatively unknown but not-so-minor player (played John Procaccino) in the Red Scare of the 1950s. Neither the petulant performances by Kate Arrington and Greg Keller nor the arch writing by Greenberg.

When your facial expression is genetically preset to "unblinking stare while throwing a hatchet 100 feet into another man's head," it's probably hard to mix up your look for special occasions. Michael Shannon knows what I'm talking about! The Boardwalk Empire actor had some fun at The Night Before premiere, but does a jaunty sweater help soften him up at all? Let's take a look ... Now, from this angle, Shannon still looks like the face you see through your picture window right before the crimes of your past come back to tear your world apart. (Also, in this scenario, it's Christmas.) But maybe if we just peep it from another angle … Lady, get out of there! Oh, that's just Shannon's wife, Kate Arrington. Ha ha, that's fun. This one definitely makes you feel like you'd have a warm, wonderful time at Michael Shannon's holiday party, though. At least until...
