Since their inception, the directing categories at the Tony Awards have mostly been a boys’ club. Not only are the vast majority of winners men, but so are most of the nominees. But the 2024 ceremony could upend these statistics as more women are helming Broadway shows than ever before. This could finally be the year where they make up the majority of directing nominees.
This season there are 13 women directors on Broadway. Four of them will contend for Best Director of a Play: Lila Neugebauer (“Appropriate” and “Uncle Vanya”), Anne Kauffman (“Mary Jane”), Tina Landau (“Mother Play”), and Whitney White (“Jaja’s African Hair Braiding”). Another nine women will vie for Best Director of a Musical: Sammi Canold (“How to Dance in Ohio”), Rachel Chavkin (“Lempicka”), Rebecca Frecknall (“Cabaret”), Maria Friedman (“Merrily We Roll Along“), Mari Madrid, Leigh Silverman (“Suffs”), Jessica Stone (“Water for Elephants”), Danya Taymor (“The Outsiders”), and...

The new year started off by showing that there was at least something good that came out of 2020: A musical rendition of the 2007 Pixar film “Ratatouille.”
On Jan. 1, the benefit virtual concert based on the beloved animated film debuted with Tituss Burgess taking over the lead role as Remy, a rat with big dreams. It has raised $1 million (and counting) for the Actor’s Fund and is available to stream on demand until Monday night.
“The way I’ve kind of been describing it is like if a Zoom reading drank like 20 Red Bulls and then exploded onto the screen,” director Lucy Moss told BuzzFeed News.
What is noteworthy about “Ratatouille the Musical” is that it was based on a play that never existed, but rather a viral sensation that organically sprang up last fall on TikTok. In October, with Broadway theaters having been shuttered for months, a group...

In August of 2020 a tiny TikTok song dedicated to Remy the Rat (the animated star of the 2007 Pixar film “Ratatouille”) sparked a musical metamorphosis. Within days, theater kid TikTok was all asking the same question, “What if there was a ‘Ratatouille’ musical?”
The social media app was awash with 60 second offerings from designers, singers and choreographers all adding contributions to the opus. Solo performances would grow into choral anthems as user after user added their spin to each singers’ performance. A musical was taking shape with costumes, dance routines and even tiny dioramas of projected set renderings. The year’s crushing isolation and lack of live performances created the perfect spark to ignite an organic, entirely crowd-sourced musical.
As the submissions for “Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical” grew, so did its notoriety. Soon Andrew Barth Feldman (who played the titular role in “Dear Evan Hanson” on Broadway) was posting his own...

The first new musical of 2019-2020 Broadway season, “Moulin Rouge!,” is a sumptuous stage adaptation of Baz Lurhman’s film and the “spectacular spectacular” production will draw in crowds like moths to a flame. The tuner is bound to scoop up a slew of Tony nominations next April, but Original Score won’t be among them. Every Best Musical winner since 2013 has claimed the Original Score trophy, but jukebox musicals like this one aren’t eligible for that prize.
“Moulin Rouge!,” which incorporates a parade of pop hits, is not alone in its use of pre-existing music this season. Every new musical coming to Broadway this year uses familiar tunes. “Girl From the North Country” is a Depression era tale told through the music of Bob Dylan; “Jagged Little Pill” uses the songs of Alanis Morissette to chronicle inner pain; and “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical” pulls from the Queen...
