In addition, Amazon MGM Studios will be distributing the movie, repping its second collaboration with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s Artists Equity in the wake of this year’s acclaimed Air. "What happened to Olivia Thirlby?" I asked this very question to a friend a couple weeks back, while riding the tube in London. The actress broke onto the scene with a small role in the Paul Greengrass-directed Oscar-nominated United 93, and proceeded to go on a tear, starring in some of my favorite indie films of 2007/2008: David Gordon Green's underrated adaptation of Snow Angels, Jason Reitman's Oscar-nominated film Juno, and Jonathan Levine's The Wackness. She has since made appearances in a few New York City-short films, including Brett Ratner's segment of New York, I Love You, Daryl Wein's SXSW mumblecore romantic comedy Breaking Upwards, and John Hindman's The Answer Man. Many people I've talked to believed this now-23-year-old actress had the potential to be Hollywood's next big thing (and I too was on the bandwagon). And not for a lack of trying,...

Chicago – “Hell is other people!” declares reclusive author Arlen Faber. That’s nothing compared to the hell of fake people, who permeate so many subpar pictures marketed as “indie” entertainment. There’s not a single character in “The Answer Man” that feels the least bit realistic. There’s not a single line of dialogue that sounds as if it was spontaneously spoken, instead of typed by a screenwriter with a slick Thesaurus. But most importantly, the film doesn’t work because its characters are simply undeserving of the required audience empathy. It’s impossible to care about anyone on the screen, or anything that happens to them.
Blu-Ray Rating: 2.0/5.0
So why is this film a mediocre dud rather than a catastrophic failure? Because it is populated by gifted actors who try to inject the contrived material with vibrant life. Jeff Daniels is one of the most appealing actors in modern cinema,...

Not enough answers
In The Answer Man, Arlen Faber (Daniels) has attained Oprah-level cult status after penning a book called Me and God, a book that “redefined spirituality for a generation.” But unlike Oprah, Arlen hasn’t made a single public appearance since his book was published 20 years ago—no readings, no lectures, no television appearances. Instead, hiding out in his Philadelphia townhouse, he’s insulated himself from the masses.

Arlen Farber is not a particularly nice man, he is rude to practically everyone he meets, and even knows, and is very much comfortable with the idea of being a hermit. What he also is, is a writer of a hit book “God and Me” which is currently about to hit its 20 year anniversary. One day, Farber is suddenly hit with some serious back pain, causing him to fall down to the floor barely able to move. When his agent walks out on him for being rude to her, he decides to crawl his way over to a chiropractor. There, he is fixed up by Elizabeth, a single mom whom he instantly falls for. During his attempts to woo her, he also helps out a struggling alcoholic named Kris, who wants answers to his life problems.

Well it’s been a real long time since I have seen a real good comedy flick from Jeff Daniels, honestly my favorite from him has always been “Dumb and Dumber”. Now walking into the film I honestly wasn’t expecting much, it was a new director and lately the work Daniels has put it out was hit in miss. But after viewing the film, it was certainly a lot better then I expected but not quite the masterpiece I was looking for.
So we have our main character Arlen Faber who wrote a famous religious book called “God and Me” which is a huge hit across the world and is even written in a hundred different languages. But now is about to hit its twentieth anniversary, Faber played by Jeff Daniels is this reclusive bitter hermit author, who wants nothing to do with the outside world. Actress Lauren Graham has long had her share of fans thanks to her role playing cool and sassy mom Lorelai to Alexis Bledel on the popular long-running show "Gilmore Girls." Since the show ended a few years ago, Graham has been appearing here and there in various movies, and her latest one is The Answer Man , the directorial debut by John Hindman, which stars Jeff Daniels as Arlen Faber, the reclusive writer of a spiritual self-help book who has been hiding from society in the 20 years since writing it. Graham plays a chiropractor who helps Arlen come out of hiding, turning to him for advice on dealing with the son she's been raising alone since her husband left them. It's first and foremost a comedy with a bit of romance between Daniels and Graham, but it's also an...

The City of Brotherly Love is glutted with fathers, sons, and the holy ghost in The Answer Man, writer-director John Hindman's debut film. The specter of some of the most tiresome traits of Amerindie cinema also looms over the story of Arlen Faber (Jeff Daniels), a reclusive writer made whole again through the healing connection to single-mom chiropractor Elizabeth (Lauren Graham) and 12-stepping used-bookstore manager Kris (Lou Taylor Pucci).

It's rare that a movie manages to be both graceful and biting at the same time, let alone smart, funny and sweet. But The Answer Man fills the bill. The directorial debut of writer-director John Hindman, The Answer Man deals with the big questions, even as it tells a personal story. In this romantic comedy about finding the courage to confront life, Hindman takes an old-fashioned approach: He actually lets people talk to each other as they struggle with their burdens. On the surface, The Answer Man is about Arlen Faber (Jeff Daniels), a hugely famous author of a single book, Me and God, which is about to celebrate its 20th anniversary. Not that it's made Arlen happy: He lives an anonymous life in Philadelphia, zealously guarding his identity (apparently the original book didn't include an author photo) as he tries to...

John Hindman's debut film, The Answer Man (nee Arlen Faber on IMDb.com), is a sweet, gentle, Frank Capra-ish slice of life involving a cranky writer, Arlen Farber (Jeff Daniels), who's become a virtual recluse following the crazy, runaway success of his first book, Me and God. After years of hiding in brownstone Philadelphia, what gets him out of the house is crippling back pain, where he gets mixed up with a bookstore owner (Lou Taylor Pucci), fresh out of rehab, looking for the answers and a single mom (Lauren Graham, playing a nicely shaded role) who's trying to find her own peace of mind. With a great ensemble cast - Kat Dennings, Olivia Thirlby, Arrested Development's Tony Hale, the ever-sublime Nora Dunn - this film explores fathers and sons, the effect of fame, and how people connect in the world. Arlen's life collides with Elizabeth (Graham), a single mom raising her seven year-old son, and Kris (Taylor Pucci), a young man fresh out of rehab who is searching for meaning.

The Sonoma Film Festival offers such a splendid backdrop that makes it difficult to trade it, and the tasty food and delicious wines donated by local restaurants and wineries in for, a darkened environment to watch a slate of films. With exceptions such as the Korean film "Story of Wine" which almost feels tailor made for the festival, the festival's film selections feels catered towards a local, discerning audience who probably take their movies as seriously as they do about making wine. The friendly and patient audience had a chance to indulge in a selection of local shorts, international features and the highlight of the 12th festival edition was a tribute to Hollywood legend Bruce Willis would have preferred to be honoured as a great "Line Memorizer" rather than accepting

- There was too much starch for me with Arlen Faber, a rom com that tries so hard at being good and at getting all the emotions within a 90-minute run. While John Hindman’s debut wasn't my fancy, a good portion of the crowd at my public screening were revved up. As I had mentioned in my quick coverage of a screening in Park City, I think this will work well with a certain demographic (anyone over 40), and as an individual title this is considered good counter-programming from the Magnet division. IndieWIRE reports that Magnolia pictures as picked up the film in a deal that would call for a summer release (where many of the Sundance buys are winding up). Formerly titled "The Dream of the Romans", Jeff Daniels plays the title character, “Faber” tells the story of the reclusive author of “Me and God,” a massively popular book that essentially redefined spirituality.

- I'm fairly certain of who Arlen Faber is intended for and unfortunately I'm not part of that demo. I could feel that some parts of the crowd at the Racquet Club were totally into John Hindman's (pictured below) light-hearted, rom com, but I thought it was far too sweet, too fluffy and tried too hard. With a tone that mainstream audiences will appreciate, the premise sees an author who is the leader of the mental health book craze, but for some reason success doesn't equate to long term happiness. Jeff Daniels flexes his comedic muscles, but like the character is plagued with problems, where as the supporting crew of young talent are throwaway characters (Kate Dennings, Olivia Thirlby) that fail to contribute anything that might be considered meaningful to the storyline. Prior to the screening, Hindman told me that the original title (The Dreams of Romans) was dumped

- If you are wondering what are the kinds of films that come out of this particular section - look no further then in current headline grabber examples such as with Ballast and Frozen River. So there is always reason to be excited about the announcement of this section. I'm already familiar with at least half of the projects as with John Krasinski’s debut and Adam Salky’s feature length film project but of course, the rest were completely off my radar. Among the projects we covered here are Lee Daniels’ latest Push (not the Summit film) which includes Lenny Kravitz’ screen debut (which means we can expect him to pick up a guitar for one of them parties). Jeff Daniels, Ryan Reynolds and Lisa Kudrow have signed on to star in Kieran and Michele Mulroney’s “Paper Man,” according to Variety.
The film, which heads into principal photography later this year, is described as a coming-of-middle-age story about a failed author’s (Daniels) unlikely relationship with a Long Island teen.
“Paper Man” marks the directorial debut of the Mulroney duo, who also wrote the “Justice League” screenplay. And here’s some trivia from IMDb: Kieran is the brother-in-law of Catherine Keener, while Michele is the sister-in-law of Dermont Mulroney.
