Annecy, France — Five years ago Sarah Smith and Julie Lockhart founded Locksmith Animation. Smith was coming off her feature directorial debut on Aardman Animations’ “Arthur Christmas.” Lockhart was a long-time Aardman producer whose credits include Oscar-nominated fare such as “Shaun the Sheep” and “The Pirates! Band of Misfits.”
Oh Thursday afternoon the two now-studio heads, along with an impressive roster of their in-house talent, held their first official Annecy presentation: Locksmith Animation: A New Studio Finds Its Voice.
“We’ve kept a low profile,” said Smith. “As a new company we are aware how long it takes to have anything to show, and next year will be our first work in progress for our first film.”
Although this was the studio’s first official presentation at Annecy, Lock and Smith have attended the festival in the past. In fact, Smith has used the festival as a hunting ground for talent.

We chat to Doctor Who and Sherlock writer and actor Mark Gatiss about his series 8 episode Robot Of Sherwood, 'darkness', and more.
Warning: contains a spoiler for An Adventure In Space And Time.
Mark Gatiss is a busy man but polite to a fault. He agreed to squeeze in a chat with us after a lengthy round of Us phone interviews on the eve of broadcast for his seventh Doctor Who episode, Robot Of Sherwood ("It'll just be nice to talk to someone who doesn't say Rah-ban Hud!"). Half an hour before the scheduled time, he calls to say that he's finished with the Americans but would I mind waiting twenty minutes while he has his tea? Take as long as you like, I say, thinking a) how rare it is for 'the talent' not to communicate their running-late apologies through a PR, b) for 'the talent' to apologise for running late at all,...

With horror films it's often a real challenge to separate the good from the bad. Whether a film is terrifying, gripping or tense depends on tiny little details with a large hit or miss ratio. It makes a film like The Torment a bit hard to recommend, but hardened genre fans should take notice. Co-directors Andrew Cull and Steve Isle are talents to look out for, turning what should by all means be a simple horror flick into a devilish little mind trip.
People seem to love to compare this film to Paranormal Activities. Whether this is fueled by the production company to boost sales or born from the audience itself is a little unclear, but the comparison is utter crap. The Torment feels more like a mix between Pop Skull and Ils, combining the home invasion theme of Ils with the trip-like paranoia of Pop Skull. While there are...
