What’s a film without distribution? The Popcorn List sets out to make sure that doesn’t happen to the best indies.
Founded by Lela Meadow-Conner and Barbara Twist, the inaugural annual survey spotlights 20 features that debuted at major or regional film festivals this past year and come highly recommended by festival programmers. Nineteen out of the 20 movies have reviews on Letterboxd, despite not yet having theatrical or digital distribution in the U.S. All 20 have won awards — including Audience Awards and Jury Awards — at festivals like Sundance and SXSW.
Billed as being The Black List for undistributed films, the 2024 Popcorn List highlights independent films that are currently still without domestic U.S. distribution, like the documentary “Chasing Chasing Amy” about the making of Kevin Smith’s comedy.
The other 18 are: “Ajoomma,” “American Pot Story: Oaksterdam,” “Art for Everybody,” “Asog,” “Blood Sweat & Beers,” “Caterpillar,” “Citizen Sleuth,” “City of Wind,” “Crows Are White,...

Desperate times at the box office call for some desperate measures, and AMC always has some trick it has up its sleeve to lure new audiences into movie theaters. (Or simply to build revenue — remember the gold mine that wasn’t quite a gold mine? The retail-investment community on Reddit sure does.)
But AMC Entertainment has been in rare form this week, even for CEO Adam Aron.
On Friday, AMC announced a partnership with Blumhouse for a new film festival they’re calling “Halfway to Halloween.” Tickets went on sale today for a five-day run of different Blumhouse films starting on March 29. Tickets are just $8 (per film), and you can see M. Night Shyamalan’s “Split,” the original “The Purge,” “Ouija: Origin of Evil,” “Insidious,” and “The Invisible Man” all on the big screen.
Granted, there’s no bad time to do a horror-movie marathon, but it’s a bit...

Smash hit Japanese animation feature “The First Slam Dunk” is set to be the first film theatrically released by newly-launched Australian distribution and New Zealand licensing firm Sugoi Co.
The company is headed by Tim Anderson, founder and former CEO of Madman Entertainment, the Australian indie with a strong leaning for Japanese content, and Sylvester “Sly” Ip.
The pair made an announcement on Twitter and conducted a soft launch at the recent Anime Expo in Los Angeles.
“The First Slam Dunk. Coming soon to cinemas across Australia. Follow us for full release and ticket info,” said Sugoi Co on Twitter.
Anderson told Anime News Network that Sugoi will focus on marketing and promotion for the Australian and New Zealand market. It will be a portfolio business and platform agnostic, releasing anime properties through the appropriate channel, rather than being wedded to theatrical or any specific platform for release.

The “Field of Dreams Game” had a dream ending for Chicago White Sox fans, and its Nielsen ratings were a dream for Fox. The walk-off win over the New York Yankees was the most-watched regular season baseball game on any network in 16 years. And Thursday was a busy night on broadcast TV. In addition to the big baseball game on Fox, NBC brought back “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” — a former Fox series — for one final run. CBS aired “Big Brother.” The “Field of Dreams Game,” based on the 1989 Kevin Costner movie, had a final scene fit for Hollywood. Trailing for most of the game, the New York Yankees took the lead in the top of the 9th inning after scoring four runs on the Chicago closer — a tall order against the first-place team in the A.L. Central. But in the bottom half of the inning, Tim Anderson’s two-run homer into the cornfield ended the game,...
