How far will you go to deny your identity in order to be a somebody? What happens when you make a deal with a devil whom you might normally despise, but has transfixed much of an entire nation’s population? And how long can you will yourself to ignore evidence of the intolerable? These are just a few of the questions raised — sometimes with allusive finesse, sometimes with blunt-force impact — during “The Performance,” an enthralling period drama with often disquieting contemporary relevance.
If you have roamed through this cinematic territory before, you may discern in Shira Piven’s exceptional film traces of “Cabaret,” “Mephisto” and other tales of ambitious entertainers striving for the spotlight as Adolf Hitler’s shadow spreads over 1930s Germany. But this largely faithful adaptation and intelligent expansion of a 2002 short story by Arthur Miller ultimately stands on its own merits as both vivid historical recreation and riveting cautionary fable,...

Seaside shenanigans ensue after an apparent hit-and-run accident in this slapdash, mildly amusing thriller
In this Blackpool-set thriller, semi-retired wide boy Greg (Craig Kelly) is feeling bored and stifled by the routine of fatherhood with an infant daughter and a constantly critical wife, Gemma (Maimie McCoy). On Halloween night, his brother Dan shows up claiming to have killed the son of local gangster queenpin Miss Ferguson in a hit-and-run accident. Desperate, Dan begs for Greg’s help.
But hold on a sec – is this all a staged scam, designed to jolt Greg into appreciating the pleasures of everyday life, as if the MacGuffin in David Fincher’s The Game were a rehab intervention? Or perhaps it’s all a hallucination or vision, given the early references to Greg’s putative psychic powers and tendency to smoke skunk?...

PBS Masterpiece has boarded the remake of classic European detective series “Van der Valk” and will co-produce and air the show in the U.S.
Masterpiece’s Rebecca Eaton will exec produce the project. It is the latest in a healthy line of U.K.-originated drama that Masterpiece has boarded since becoming the U.S. home for British-made hits such as “Downton Abbey.” More recent projects include “Mrs Wilson” and the upcoming “All Creatures Great and Small” reboot.
“Van der Valk” now joins that roster. The original series was loosely based on the Nicolas Freeling novels and was made by British producer Thames for ITV in the 1970s. Barry Foster starred as the thoughtful titular Dutch detective, tackling crimes against a picturesque Dutch backdrop. The producers said the new iteration will see Van der Valk re-imagined as an unapologetic and street-smart cop in Amsterdam who leads a dynamic team investigating mysterious crimes.

All the places are coming together for what promises to be an exciting finale to The Musketeers series 3...
This review contains spoilers.
3.8 Prisoners Of War
So we’re finally into the home stretch of the last season. This has to be the point at which The Musketeers will either make good on its past successes or fade away as another BBC also-ran. The season hasn’t quite been as strong as the last, but then it's by no means been a failure. A slight slump in the middle hasn’t overshadowed some great character work by the show’s regulars as well as some excellent work by some of the newcomers.
Prisoners Of War is an episode of two stories, one continuing the Musketeers’ chase for Grimauld and the threat against Paris from Louis’ death, and the other, the return of Milady and the more intimate danger she poses to our heroes.

Big news for fans of The Musketeers - Maimie McCoy will not appear in the opening episodes of series three.
McCoy is pregnant and so is currently unable to reprise her role of Milady on the BBC drama.
However, a BBC spokesperson has confirmed to Digital Spy that the actress is in talks to return to the show at a later date.
"We are delighted for Maimie and wish her well through her pregnancy," they said. "We very much hope she may come back as Milady in the latter half of series 3 and are in discussions with her to that effect."
It is currently unclear how many episodes McCoy will miss as a result of her pregnancy.

The Musketeers creator Adrian Hodges has stepped down as showrunner ahead of the upcoming third series.
Hodges adapted Alexandre Dumas's novel for BBC One, but revealed to Geek Syndicate that he will not be back for the next run.
"I just felt that after the last season I was totally knackered," he said. "I love the show but it had been a very intensive two... well, four years really - and what I didn't want to do was go straight into developing a new season. I just didn't quite have the energy to do that."
BBC One was able to recommission The Musketeers thanks to financial backing from BBC Worldwide and BBC America, who also contributed to the first two series.

The BBC has ordered a third series of Adrian Hodges The Musketeers, which is due to start filming in April 2015...
The Musketeers, as our series two reviews show, has been going from strength to strength (despite a messy Friday night schedule for these past few weeks due to football, and now rugby).
It may have lost Peter Capaldi to Doctor Who, but Marc Warren's villainous Rochefort is beginning to fill those antagonist shoes nicely. The rest of the cast too, from leads Luke Pasqualino, Tom Burke, Howard Charles and Santiago Cabrera to supporting castmembers Ryan Gage, Tamla Kari, Maimie McCoy and Alexandra Dowling, have shaped up into a fine squad.
News of the show's third series renewal then, as announced at the start of this week by BBC Worldwide and BBC America (The Musketeers is partly financed, and goes out, internationally), comes as welcome indeed.

Back after a week's hiatus, The Musketeers doesn't miss a beat this Friday night, leaping straight into another rip-roaring adventure with 'Emilie' - the tale of a peasant woman, and apparent prophet, bent on war with Spain.
In this time of crisis, the petulant King Louis (Ryan Gage) is otherwise engaged with his new mistress - Athos's one-time beloved and the Cardinal's one-time partner-in-crime, Milady de Winter (Maimie McCoy).
Ahead of the series' return, McCoy spoke to Digital Spy about Milady's journey this series, fan art and why she hates being called a "bad girl".
Milady made her spectacular comeback in episode two of series two, but what sort of feedback did you get about the character after the first series?

The Musketeers' honour comes into conflict with their duty in this week's impressive and entertaining episode...
This review contains spoilers.
2.2 An Ordinary Man
Directed by John Strictland (from last week’s Keep Your Friends Close) and written by Pete McKenna (who also wrote the first series episode, Knight Takes Queen), An Ordinary Man is a step-up from last week’s so-so season opener bringing some much needed thrills and depth whilst also seeing the return of a first season favourite, Milady.
Somewhat surprisingly given her importance to last season’s overarching storyline, An Ordinary Man isn’t Milady’s story. It is however the King’s, who so often is given to being either the comic relief or simply a convenient character to order the Musketeers to go off on their adventures. I think Ryan Gage has done a great job of making his King Louis child-like but with...

It's been an eventful nine months for The Musketeers - both on- and off-screen - since we last saw Athos, Aramis, Porthos and D'Artagnan ride off into the sunset.
Launching with an audience of 9.3m in January 2014, the period romp became the BBC's biggest new drama since Call The Midwife - but while a second series was quickly ordered, the show was soon hit by the loss of its chief antagonist.
Departing for Doctor Who, Peter Capaldi - who'd played devious Cardinal Richelieu - left The Musketeers without a villain, but when Digital Spy visited the Prague set in September, spirits among the cast and crew were far from dampened.
"No disrespect of course to the great Mr Capaldi..." says actor Howard Charles, the burly Porthos, "...but Marc Warren as Rochefort is the next best thing."

Director: Andy Goddard; Screenwriters: Andy Goddard, Celyn Jones; Starring: Elijah Wood, Celyn Jones, Steven Mackintosh, Shirley Henderson, Maimie McCoy; Running time: 90 mins; Certificate: Tbc
It's a matter of feeling. That's the general theme conveyed by Set Fire to the Stars, which covers Dylan Thomas's turbulent tour of America in 1950. But while the Welsh poet was a master at arousing sensation with his words, Andy Goddard's stylishly shot movie doesn't succeed in forming a sustained emotional connection with the viewer.
It's a surprise how flat the movie feels, given the fascinating subject matter of the complex relationship between Thomas (Celyn Jones) and his American agent John Brinnin (Elijah Wood). The latter's doomed mission to steer his hellraising hero away from intoxication before his performances should have been rife with laughs and tears. Marc Warren has joined the cast of The Musketeers for its second series.
The Mad Dogs actor will play the Comte De Rochefort - a dashing aristocrat with a very dark past.
Warren's casting follows the news that Peter Capaldi will not reprise his role of Cardinal Richelieu, due to commitments to Doctor Who.
The star said: "I'm delighted to be part of the BBC's stylish and exciting take on the Dumas classic. Once I've overcome my fear of horses, I'm sure it'll be a walk in the park."
BBC executive producer Jessica Pope added: "[Series creator] Adrian [Hodges] and I were thrilled to welcome Marc to the cast. He's a clever and mercurial actor who will bring danger and charm to the role of Rochefort in equal measure."
Bar Capaldi, all of the show's central cast - including Luke Pasqualino, Maimie McCoy and Tom Burke - will return for series two.

BBC America today set a June 22 premiere date for The Musketeers and a second season pickup for the series, which it co-produces with BBC Worldwide. The Musketeers, a BBC Drama production for BBC One, already was renewed by the flagship BBC network last month. A contemporary take on the classic Alexandre Dumas characters, The Musketeers, created by Adrian Hodges (My Week With Marilyn), is set on the streets of seventeenth century Paris, where law and order is an idea more than a reality. In addition to being King Louis Xiii’s personal bodyguards, Athos, Aramis and Porthos stand resolutely for social justice, honor, valor, love – and for the thrill of it. Luke Pasqualino (The Borgias) stars as D’Artagnan alongside Tom Burke (Great Expectations) as Athos, Santiago Cabrera (Heroes) as Aramis and Howard Charles (Royal Shakespeare Company) as Porthos. Peter Capaldi, Maimie McCoy, Tamla Kari and Hugo Speer also star.

BBC The Musketeer’s
The Musketeers season finale began with a dramatic public confrontation during which Athos (Tom Burke) declared his contempt for D’Artagnan (Luke Pasqualino). Turns out that Milady (Maimie McCoy) was secretly married to Athos and he didn’t take to kindly to her liaisons dangereuses with his buddy D’Artagnan. Cardinal Richelieu (Peter Capaldi) seized upon the conflict as a way to polish off the pesky Musketeers. If he could turn them on each other, he’d be free to continue his scheming. Milady willingly agreed to help the fiendish cleric with his dastardly plan and all seemed to be going well when the Captain kicked D’Artagnan out of the Musketeers. However, the Musketeers were already a step ahead of their nemesis and the public falling out was just a ploy to expose the Cardinal’s plot to kill the Queen.

Musketeers don't die easily - and sure enough, BBC One's Sunday night period romp will be back for further adventures in 2015. It's earned that reprieve - there's been the odd misstep here and there, but for the most part this first series has been strong stuff.
A pity then that the show's final offering this year can't help but leave the viewer unsatisfied. It's all the more unfortunate because the one major flaw with 'Musketeers Don't Die Easily' is not of its own creation - a problem the show could do nothing to avoid.
After a magnificent build-up that sees Peter Capaldi's Cardinal howling and scowling at any Parisian who stands in his path, this first run of The Musketeers essentially ends with Richelieu getting away with murder - again.
Any other week, you would accept that, but this being the finale - and crucially Capaldi's final appearance on...

The Musketeers rounds off its first series with a satisfying finale...
This review contains spoilers.
1.10 Musketeers Don't Die Easily
So here we are, the end of The Musketeers' first season. It’s fair to say that it hasn’t been the most even of rides, the quality dipped noticeably during the mid-season, but overall the series has given us enough thrills and excitement that getting to the end has been an enjoyable and at times fun journey rather than a chore. In fact, Sunday evenings will feel decidedly more grey without the colourful adventures of the Musketeers and the early renewal for a second season now feels like a good move by the Beeb rather than the risk it so easily could have been.

The real question is – did it stick the landing? In many ways Musketeers Don’t Die Easily is representative...

The Musketeers draws to a dramatic climax this week, as a shocking secret threatens to tear our heroes apart.
In 12 new images from Sunday night's finale, d'Artagnan (Luke Pasqualino) and Athos (Tom Burke) are seen coming to blows.
Manipulated by Maimie McCoy's malicious Milady, will either man survive this violent bout on the streets of 17th century Paris?
Sean Pertwee guest stars in the climactic episode as Sarazin - a figure from Milady's past who threatens her and the Musketeers alike.
'Musketeers Don't Die Easily' is also Peter Capaldi's final appearance as Cardinal Richelieu - but how will the Doctor Who star depart the series?
Could the Cardinal be arrested for his plot to kill the Queen? Or will he escape justice? Perhaps Milady or the Musketeers will see the miscreant off for good?
The Musketeers will return for a second series in 2015.

The Musketeers hasn't always hit the mark over the past eight weeks, but shortly before it departs our screens for the foreseeable future, BBC One's period action romp offers up one of its strongest, most confident episodes yet.
'Knight Takes Queen' has all the essential ingredients for a stirring family drama - romance, humour and action - while also tantalisingly laying the groundwork for next Sunday's series climax.
A fast-paced first third establishes this week's peril, with Alexandra Dowling's Queen Anne targeted by a formidable gunman - all part of a wicked plot by Peter Capaldi's Cardinal to get his grubby mitts on a wealthy German banker's riches.
Our heroes are forced to take refuge in a convent, and while you might expect a nunnery to be the one place in 17th century Paris where the Musketeers would be spared girl troubles, Aramis (Santiago Cabrera) is briefly reunited...

Luke Pasqualino's d'Artagnan was the star of The Musketeers' first episode but hasn't really taken focus since, so it's refreshing to see the plucky young hero return very much to the forefront for 'The Challenge' - the adventure serial's latest outing.
Romance might finally be blossoming with Tamla Kari's comely Constance, but elsewhere d'Artagnan's fortunes are less favourable. He's yet to become a true Musketeer and a new nemesis also lurks on the horizon, the fearsome brute Labarge - with guest star Vinnie Jones taking on the sort of period villain role he's not attempted since the music video for Westlife's 'Bop Bop Baby'.
Jones might be a one-trick pony, but it's a trick he's undeniably good at performing and it's enormous fun seeing his cockney hardman routine relocated to 17th Century Paris.
Labarge - a man with "no more humanity than a jackal" - is swiftly...

"I first got a call back in December 2012," Maimie McCoy recalls of landing her role on BBC One's Sunday night adventure series The Musketeers.
"I was working on Endeavour and having a lovely time being all sweet and 1960s and Milady landed on my desk and I just went, 'F**k yes!' - she was ferocious and fabulous."
The ferocious and fabulous Milady - right hand and secret weapon of Peter Capaldi's cunning Cardinal - has proven to be one of the show's standout characters, thanks to a star-making turn from Yorkshire-born actress McCoy and her sizzling on-screen chemistry with Tom Burke's moody Musketeer Athos.
"I love how it's been eked out over the series," she says of the simmering passion between the two characters. "They're both creatures who were destroyed by that relationship - it's left this gaping wound - but there's still this wonderful tension between them.

"What is the role of women in this age of wonder?"
Feeling rather like a retort - albeit an unwitting one - to critics like myself who've questioned the negligble role afforded women on The Musketeers, 'A Rebellious Woman' sees our heroes encounter a new phenomenon: feminism.
Leading the charge is the rebellious woman of the episode's title. Actress Annabelle Wallis brought a gentle, almost ethereal quality to her role in BBC One's Peaky Blinders last year and impresses again here as spirited trailblazer Ninon De Larroque.
Ninon is seeking to educate the young women of Paris - even the lowliest servant girls - but her efforts have placed her in opposition not only to the city's stubborn menfolk but also the Cardinal, who is urged to crush the troublesome De Larroque to secure a position as the new Pope.
After a patchy early record, The Musketeers puts Peter Capaldi...

Adventure and derring-do is all very well, but in its third week, The Musketeers knows that it has to deliver something a little more substantial - happily then, the latest instalment shifts focus from action to character.
'Commodities' reveals a good deal about Porthos (Howard Charles) - the last of the Musketeers to have his backstory sketched in, we learn that he grew up on the streets, the child of a slave mother - and more still about Athos (Tom Burke) - the frosty one's exterior finally cracks, as a return trip home unveils some dark secrets.
The episode's rather frothy first quarter seems to promise something lighter than the previous two weeks, but from the moment Porthos is injured in battle, 'Commodities' grows progressively darker.
This is the first time the Musketeers have really felt vulnerable - not only is one of them wounded, but their cocky camaraderie takes a serious hit too,...

BBC One's new revamp of The Musketeers is - as noted last week - essentially Dumas' classic novel reshaped to mimic the formula of a contemporary cop drama. So it's rather fitting that episode two sees Luke Pasqualino's spirited D'Artagnan go undercover to ally himself with a infamous and enigmatic criminal.
Jason Flemyng has always been a hugely charismatic performer and it's chiefly his towering turn as the villainous Vadim - less a Parisian Guy Fawkes and more a 17th century Hans Gruber - that makes 'Sleight of Hand' so eminently watchable.
Indeed, so good is Flemyng that the episode suffers when he's not on-screen. Like last week's premiere, 'Sleight' opens big and bold and then meanders in the middle, losing much of its momentum as attention shifts from Vadim's skullduggery to the Musketeers' investigation into the miscreant's past.
But in an echo of last week's ebb and flow,...
