Roger Corman, the pioneering producer and director, known affectionately as “the king of B movies,” passed away on May 9 at his home in Santa Monica, California. Corman had as much influence over modern Hollywood as Steven Spielberg or Martin Scorsese. And for good reason: Without him there likely wouldn’t even have been a Spielberg or Scorsese.
This maker of hundreds of low-budget horror, sci-fi, and exploitation films is to this day remembered by many, and rather unfairly, as a B-movie hack, but Corman’s aesthetic sensibilities have come to dominate the franchises we now call tent poles, and his protégés number among the most influential people in cinema. And he enjoyed every minute of it.
Corman came off as very humble, resembling no one so much as Mr. Rogers. He laughed at himself and his experiences frequently. Many of the movies that he made were ridiculous but they were knowingly so.

The story everyone knows about the rise of the Mp3 and the end of the CD gold rush is a good one. It’s got Metallica and Dr. Dre, Sean Parker and the RIAA, Napster, Kazaa, Limewire, and the record industry’s flabbergasting decision to sue its own fans. But the real story, or arguably the most nuanced and fascinating one, lies elsewhere with a bunch of young computer wizzes scattered across the country and a handful of crafty, underpaid factory workers in Shelby, North Carolina.

With a title like “God Save Texas, “ a new three-part docuseries inspired by an acclaimed piece of nonfiction carrying the same name and authored by Lawrence Wright, one might think this particular program will unquestionably take a harsh look at the Lone Star State, focusing solely on its flaws and a bleak viewpoint as it looks to the future. There’s no doubt that Texas has, time and again, been mired in a barrage of controversial moments throughout the past 178 years of its existence as the 28th United state, but under the direction of Texas natives Richard Linklater, Alex Stapleton and Iliana Sosa (“What We Leave Behind”), here three specific Texan sticking points are touched upon extensively, each handled well individually but when joined together paint a fascinating picture of how far Texas has come and how far it has yet to go.

"It's hard to be a Texan right now." HBO has revealed an official trailer for a fascinating new docu series titled God Save Texas, a three part look into the lives of Texans living in three different cities. This brand new HBO Original Documentary Trilogy is inspired by Lawrence Wright's book that's also called "God Save Texas", and follows three filmmakers' distinct perspectives on their own Texas hometowns. The three Texan filmmakers who direct the films in this series are Richard Linklater, Alex Stapleton, and Iliana Sosa – a personal and panoramic journey through one of the most controversial states in the union. Returning to their hometowns to shed light on an underrepresented story, the filmmakers chronicle the complex history of each city, exploring how it intertwines with their own provenance and evolution, and placing it in the larger picture of America today. Linklater's film God Save Texas: Hometown Prison is set in Huntsville.

Films are made of and from places: the locations they are filmed in, the settings they are meant to evoke, the geographies where they are imagined and worked on. What place tells its own story about your film, whether a particularly challenging location that required production ingenuity or a map reference that inspired you personally, politically or creatively? Texas is many things – a place, an identity, and an idea. It is a state, a state of being, and a state of mind. It holds itself apart and is held apart. It polarizes. And that makes for a good story. Anchored by Richard Linklater’s exceptional feature-length “Hometown Prison,” HBO’s God Save Texas may only be a three-part anthology docuseries, but in those three parts, it manages to be wide-ranging, timely and vitally important.
While the inspiration is Lawrence Wright’s book of the same title, and the focus is the Lone Star State, the template set by Linklater, Alex Stapleton and Iliana Sosa could be applied to personal/political hybrid storytelling delving into the fractured identities of all 50 states and the artists who call them home.
Or maybe we just need more seasons of God Save Texas — premiering at Sundance before coming to HBO on Feb. 27 and 28 — since Texas represents so much of what 21st century America is likely to look like moving forward. A red state with blue cities, in which the ideology and voting interests of each demographic are far more complicated than “Democrat” or “Republican,...

On April 28, 2023, the sports and entertainment worlds lit up with joy at the sight of Jack Nicholson taking his courtside seat at Crypto.com Arena for the Los Angeles Lakers' semifinals-clinching game against the Memphis Grizzlies. This was the 86-year-old star's first appearance at a game since the home opener of the 2021-22 season, and it dispelled rumors of ill-health that had flitted about due to his absence from the public eye.
Ever since his career took off in the late 1960s, Nicholson exemplified Hollywood stardom. He played the celebrity game with devilish glee, donning his Ray-Ban sunglasses and strutting down red carpets to the delight of shutterbugs and fans. He was a near-constant presence at the Academy Awards, where he typically sat in the front row because, well, he's Jack. And no Lakers home game felt official without him sitting just to the right of the visiting team's bench...

In the 1950s, LGBTQ people in America ran the risk of being ostracized from their communities, fired from their jobs, harassed or arrested. The Lavender Scare in that decade purged countless gay men and lesbians from employment in the federal government. And yet, the new FX series Pride reveals many LGBTQ Americans managed to find joy and contentment despite hostility from the prevailing culture.
The six-episode show, which premieres on the network May 14, is all about reframing our understanding of the LGBTQ rights movement.
“People were living rich, full lives and their lives weren’t completely defined by the oppression that they dealt with every single day. And there’s something about that that is extraordinarily transformative,” executive producer Christine Vachon said during an appearance at Deadline’s Contenders Television: Documentary + Unscripted awards-season event. “One of the things our series does is show people all those different threads and different...

FX has given formal green light to American Horror Stories, a spinoff of Ryan Murphy’s venerable anthology series American Horror Story. It is part of FX’s original programming slate through 2021, unveiled by the network Tuesday, which also includes renewals for Pamela Adlon’s comedy Better Things and New York Times’ documentary series The Weekly as well as a record-breaking Season 15 pickup for It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia.
As teased by Murphy on Instagram this month, American Horror Stories is a weekly hourlong anthology series that will feature a different horror story in each contained episode. The mothership American Horror Story, which launched the current anthology series boom, has been renewed through Season 13.
Like all Hollywood productions during the coronavirus pandemic, filming of the upcoming 10th season of Ahs remains in limbo, with no start date set yet. As a result, it is officially being pushed to 2021.

An “American Horror Story” spinoff series is officially a go at FX.
Just over two weeks after creator Ryan Murphy announced the project, FX has given the greenlight to “American Horror Stories,” a weekly anthology series that will feature a different horror story each episode.
Murphy discussed the new show on a zoom call with some core “Ahs” cast members, and while more details on the series are still sparse, it’s clear that it will likely feature familiar players from the main show.
The original “American Horror Story” is the longest running hour-long series in FX history and was renewed through season 13 earlier this year, however, due to coronavirus production complications, season 10 of “Ahs” has been pushed to 2021. Like “Ahs,” “American Horror Stories” will be produced by Twentieth Century Fox Television.

“FX has long sought to give artists a platform to showcase their individual, uncompromising vision and its new docuseries and features are an opportunity to extend that ambition in our collaboration with non-fiction talent,” said Nick Grad, co-president of original programming for FX Entertainment. “It’s been tremendously rewarding to partner with The New York Times and Hulu on ‘The Weekly,’ which has excelled creatively and is hitting series-high ratings. In Alex Stapleton’s documentary Corman’s World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel, prolific filmmaking legend Roger Corman discusses a philosophy of entertainment that he developed about a decade into his career. Corman had just made his first serious drama, the 1962 integration-themed The Intruder. The film, which he and his brother self-financed because studios wouldn’t touch it, was Corman’s first work that he felt to be truly important, and it stands today as a film without equal in its timely diagnosis of American race relations. The film also turned out to be Corman’s first indisputable box office failure. So after The Intruder, Corman changed course: he decided to continue pursuing relevant themes in his work, but maintain his dominance of American B-cinema. The text of his films would entertain audiences, but the subtext would resonate with an eye on timely social, cultural, and political issues. Corman saw his 1967 film The St. Valentine...

At the end of a bumper year for film-making, Guardian film critic Peter Bradshaw unveils the contenders for his very own – imaginary – film awards
Most critics compile year-end roundups in a mood of shrugging acceptance that not every year can be great. But actually 2012 has been vintage, with some really brilliant films from the biggest names doing their best work – and some fascinating documentaries. So once again, I have created my imaginary awards nominations in the following categories: best film, best director, best actor, best actress, best supporting actor, best supporting actress, best documentary and best screenplay. You will have to imagine me, in full tuxedo-style evening wear announcing the Braddies at the Dorchester. (I have put Seth MacFarlane, Michael Haneke and Kylie Minogue on my table.)
So, the nominations are …
Best film
Amour (dir. Michael Haneke)
The Master (dir. Paul Thomas Anderson)
Holy Motors (dir. Leos Carax)
Killing Them Softly (dir.

Michael J. Werner’s Fortissimo Films was surprisingly almost shut out from showing in any of the sections at Cannes (they’re repping the Un Certain Regard title Miss Lovely), which only means they’ll got plenty in the coffers for the near future. Loaded in Asian fare, among the titles that stick out from the pack is recent Tribeca winner Una Noche from Lucy Mulloy, and for the near future Scott McGehee and David Siegel’s next film, What Masie Knew (see pic above), John Cameron Mitchell’s How to Talk to Girls at Parties and let us not forget the best picture of the year so far in, Antonio Campos’ Simon Killer.

The documentary film Corman’s World was released on Blu-ray/DVD this week, and we were offered the opportunity to talk with producer Stone Douglass about the making of the film. While it was only a brief chat, I learned about the first attempt at starting this project, the difficulties of editing, and the possibility of unused content showing up in book form.
Were you part of the project from the beginning or did you come in after director Alex Stapleton had started working on it?
Stone Douglass: The project was about 5 and a half years total for Alex, and there was a year or so when she worked with just Jared Moshe and Rich Lim, and another guy named Josh Levin. The three of them had provided some small seed cash to help Alex interview a few people and put together a sizzle reel.

Roger Corman is one of those distinct Hollywood personalities that everyone has been exposed to in some manner. Whether you are aware of the man’s name or not, odds are you have seen a film he has produced, written or directed.
He has given many big names, from Jack Nicholson to Francis Ford Coppola, their start as part of the “Corman Film School”. His influence is immense in the film industry, and this is the focus of Alex Stapleton’s documentary, Corman’s World.
The film opens with Corman on the set of Dinoshark, doing what the man does best: making a movie! Well into his eighties, Corman is just as hands on as ever on the set of this sci-fi cheapie that was shot in Mexico. Over the next hour and a half (I beg that the film could have easily been twice as long and not suffered for it) Roger Corman,...

Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel Directed by Alex Stapelton Featuring Interviews with Roger Corman, Jack Nicholson, Ron Howard, and Martin Scorsese Review by Brandon Moore
Considering the fact that he has been writing, producing, and directing films for more than half a century, it’s shocking that it’s taken this long to produce a credible documentary regarding King of the B-Movies Roger Corman. Two years after his honorary Oscar, Corman’S World: Exploits Of A Hollywood Rebel explores the history of one of cinema’s most prolific writer/director/producers. However, while the admiration for Corman’s work ethic and talent shine through, the documentary struggles to be little more than a fluff piece that could be reconstructed on Wikipedia, and never truly gains a sense of how Corman feels about his long and varied career.

Bomb shelters were a deluxe feature in every American home, government-sponsored educational reels promised an imminent nuclear threat from across the Atlantic and Hollywood, Babylon of the western world, hung on the brink of collapse.

He’s the most mild-mannered of men, yet he’s responsible for such groundbreaking exploitation titles as Caged Women, Bloody Mama, and Attack Of The Crab Monsters. The new documentary Corman’S World: Exploits Of A Hollywood Rebel tracks the career of writer-director-producer Roger Corman, the true godfather of independent filmmaking. St. Louisans will have the opportunity to see Corman’S World: Exploits Of A Hollywood Rebel when it plays here this weekend at Webster University. Now 86 years old, Corman’s influence on modern American cinema is almost incalculable. In 2009, he was honored with an Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement. Over his amazing career, Mr. Corman has produced films, built studios, and launched the careers of so many young filmmakers and actors, some of whom have gone on to become the biggest names in Hollywood. Corman has been been interviewed many times in the past and this new film doesn...

It was inevitable that a team of smart film producers would make a worthwhile documentary about the outrageously smart film producer known as Roger Corman. Hell, to call Roger Corman a mere "film producer" is a massive understatement. Over his amazing career, Mr. Corman has produced films, built studios, and (most importantly) fostered dozens of wonderful filmmakers, many of whom have gone on to become, well, some of the best actors, writers, producers, and directors of all time. This larger-than-life but admirably soft-spoken movie king deserves a Ken Burns style series of documentary films! But for now we'll have to be content with Alex Stapleton's supremely informative and entertaining documentary known...

Corman’S World: Exploits Of A Hollywood Rebel
Featuring: Roger Corman, Joe Dante, Peter Bogdanovich, Jack Nicholson, Dick Miller, Robert DeNiro, David Carradine, William Shatner | Directed by Alex Stapleton
Roger Corman is perhaps the most prolific and influential Hollywood filmmaker in the history of the medium. His immeasurable imprint on American cinema not only spans over six decades but has resulted in creating an indelible cinematic body of work as well as a legacy of training the next generation of actors, writers, directors and producers – many of whom have created cinema masterpieces of their own – including many listed above!
I’m a huge fan of exploitation cinema, I have been my entire movie-watching life. After all I grew up in the video generation – a generation in which lurid VHS boxes promised more than the movies within contained and a time when my movie experiences influenced the types of films I relish in and enjoy today.
