John Jasper(1876-1929)
- Producer
Set designer John Jasper worked with Charlie Chaplin for almost 13
years, and in 1919 left Chaplin Studios to build three
production-stages on a stretch of empty Hollywood land at 1040 North
Las Palmas Avenue. He rented his stages to movie companies as Hollywood
Studios, Inc., or Jasper Hollywood Studios. It was the first such
studio on the 16.5 acre site, which would become one of the most famous
and well-used film locations of the 20th century. Literally hundreds of
famous films and later television shows were made at Jasper's lot. His
studio was run by Chicago investor C.E. Toberman, one of many outsiders
to come to Hollywood and become wealthy in the new
business.
