Saxophonist, clarinettist, arranger, composer and popular recording artist, who led a 'jump band' in New York during the 1940's.
Composed many novelty numbers and several jazz standards, including "The Major and the Minor" and "Let Me Off Uptown".
Held a degree in music from Xavier University in New Orleans.
Worked variously in bands led by Don Redman, Cab Calloway and Lionel Hampton. Arranged for Hampton, Louis Prima and Jack Teagarden.
