A member of the Critics Choice Association has resigned after more than a decade with the group, citing what he believes is a “transactional” process behind the Cca’s forthcoming inaugural Celebration of LGBTQ+ Cinema & Television.
John Griffiths, who was the longtime television critic for Us Weekly and has more recently written for the TV Academy’s Emmy magazine and AARP magazine, sent a note of resignation Sunday to the organization behind the Critics Choice Awards. The note, which has been obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, alleges that the group has a policy of expecting honorees to pay for a table at the ceremony.
“Despite my commitment to advancing queer and trans-centric representation, I have become deeply disheartened by the selection process for this event’s honorees,” Griffiths wrote. “Simply put, I believe many people expect that members of the Critics Choice Association are the ones who select the awardees for this celebration; instead,...

Exclusive: The 2025 Critics Choice Awards will not be airing exclusively on the CW. The broadcast network has opted not to renew the awards show’s current option for next year, sources tell Deadline. However, it is still possible to see the ceremony on the CW in 2025 as the network is looking for a path to continue to carry it, shared with another network or a streamer, I hear. There was a similar arrangement for the 2022 Critics Choice Awards, simulcast on the CW and TBS.
The Critics Choice Association, run by President Joey Berlin, is said to already be in conversations with potential new broadcast partners.
After bouncing around various networks from 2001-2016 with stints on E!, the WB, VH1, the CW and A&e, the Critics Choice Awards returned to the CW in 2017 and had aired on the network ever since.

The Critics Choice Awards is changing venues in 2023, moving to Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar as its traditional home remains in a labor dispute with the hospitality union Unite Here Local 11.
Critics Choice Association CEO Joey Berlin confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday that the Jan. 14 ceremony would no longer be taking place at the Fairmont Century Plaza, as was previously planned. The group’s top awards event took place at the recently renovated Century City property in 2022 and 2023, and at the Barker Hanger for several ceremonies during the 2010s and in 2021. Variety was the first to report the news.
“We support the union. There’s a labor dispute and it’s ongoing and we cannot consider asking our guests, our nominees, to cross a picket line, especially in the context of all the labor unrest in Hollywood this year,” Berlin told THR. “With just a few weeks to go before our show,...

The Critics Choice Awards is on the move.
The Critics Choice Association said today that its 29th annual trophy show is moving to Barker Hangar in Santa Monica and away from the Fairmont Century Plaza, which remains mired in a dispute with hotel workers.
“We regret that a labor dispute has made it impossible for the 29th annual Critics Choice Awards show to be held at the Fairmont Century Plaza, where it has enjoyed great success for the past two years,” Critics Choice Association CEO Joey Berlin said. “But we are happy to be able to return to The Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, where our show has also enjoyed great success through the years.”
Indeed, the CCAs have been held at the airport local eight times in the past decade. The ceremony was at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles last year.

It’s a Barbie world and we’re all just living in it. Months after becoming the all-time highest-grossing film by a solo female director, Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” has been steadily blowing all other 2023 movies out of the water when it comes to industry awards recognition. One of its greatest achievements yet happened Wednesday morning when the Critics Choice Association showered it with an unprecedented 18 nominations in 16 categories. Despite this strong domination, the teams behind plenty of other films had ample reason to celebrate, as this was the first year in which more than two titles collected at least a dozen bids apiece.
The much-publicized one-upmanship battle between “Barbie” and its fellow July 21 release, Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” will continue at the 29th Critics Choice Awards as the popular films face off in 10 races, including Best Picture and Best Director. The eighth annual Critics Choice Documentary Awards nominations are often an early bellwether for the Best Documentary Feature Oscar race, mainly because they signal to Oscar voters many of the key films they should not miss. Last year’s winner, “Good Night Oppy,” did not make it to the documentary Oscar shortlist, but the year before, “Summer of Soul” went on to win the Oscar.
This year’s nominations were led by fall festival favorite “American Symphony,” Matthew Heineman’s moving portrait of musician Jon Batiste as he juggles work demands and his wife’s recurring leukemia, with six nods. It was followed by Mstyslav Chernov’s Ukraine international Oscar submission “20 Days in Mariupol,” D.
