Jeremy Piven plays a prodigal son aiming to build a casino in his old neighbourhood in this flat-footed ode to bar-room wisdom
This soft-headed comedy-drama has the profundity and about the same wit level of one of those joke signs you see above bars, and often feels like it was scripted on a hangover after a two-day bender. Jeremy Piven plays Mick, prodigal real estate-developer son who returns to his old stomping ground of Darby Heights (based on Philadelphia’s Upper Darby) for his mother’s funeral. His feckless buddies, including jail-hopping brother Dougal (Zach McGowan), are still living their old boozy lives. What Mick thinks will revitalise the neighbourhood – and fend off the real-estate sharks circling, among other things, his dad’s pub – is a new casino.
The obvious contradiction here – that Mick’s idea is ridiculous, and he is in fact part of what is threatening Darby Heights – is never meaningfully broached,...

Returning to their hometown can often offer people the most insight on how they should move forward with their lives, and how their families and childhood friends won’t hold them back from pursuing their dreams, like they originally believed. That’s certainly the case for Jeremy Piven’s protagonist of Mick in the new comedy, ‘Last Call.’ […]

The Brad Furman-directed crime thriller City of Lies has had quite a journey, but the Saban Films release finally hits theaters today before dropping on digital and on demand April 9.
Based on the book, LAbyrinth, by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Randall Sullivan and adapted by Christian Contreras, City of Lies follows the investigation into the infamous murder of iconic rap artist Christopher Wallace aka the hip hop legend Notorious B.I.G.
Oscar and Emmy winner Forest Whitaker stars as Jack Jackson, a journalist who teams up with LAPD detective Russell Poole (Johnny Depp), who spent nearly 20 years trying to solve the murder. The two of them try to find the truth. They explore why the case remains cold — and why a secret division of the LAPD is seemingly set on keeping it that way.
It’s not a lie that City of Lies went through a lot to make its way to the theaters.

"Did you forget where you came from?" IFC Films has revealed an official trailer for a dramedy titled Last Call, from filmmaker / producer Paolo Pilladi. The film's early working title was Crabs in a Bucket, which seems amusing but probably doesn't really describe the story well. A "success story" real estate developer returns to his old Philly neighborhood and ends up obligated to stay to help ensure his parents’ ailing family business gets back on course. While there, he must decide to raze or resurrect the family bar while dealing with other questions about his life and what to do next. The film stars Jeremy Piven, Taryn Manning, Bruce Dern, Zach McGowan, Jamie Kennedy, and Jack McGee. Doesn't look that great, but it does look like a sweet & funny middle-aged look at "going home" and reconnecting with your old neighborhood. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Paolo Pilladi's Last Call,...
