Cher is a legendary singer, actress and long-time advocate for gay rights. She had one child with former husband Sonny Bono -- daughter Chastity Sun Bono, who was named after Cher's first dramatic film role in the 1969 flop 'Chastity,' where she played a bisexual.
Daughter Chastity came out as a lesbian many years ago, and following a sex-change operation, she changed her name to Chaz Salvatore Bono. Cher fully supports Chaz, who was legally declared a man this past May. But on 'Late Show' (weeknights, 11:35Pm Et on CBS), she and David Letterman puzzled through how to refer to her child.

All hail the Chief, proud defender of gay teens. Yes, President Barack Obama has jumped on the anti-gay-bullying bandwagon by producing a heartfelt “It Gets Better” video, following in the footsteps of bold-faced names from Chaz Salvatore Bono and Ke$ha to Adam Lambert and Neil Patrick Harris. The Commander in Chief is far from the first politician to encourage targeted teens to seek solace in adults and know that things will improve — just this week, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton did her own version under the banner of “Tomorrow Will Be Better,” and of course, there’s the viral...

Adam Lambert is the latest celebrity to film a video for Dan Savage’s It Gets Better Project, which supports gay youths and anyone who’s ever felt like he or she didn’t fit in. Lambert begins with that simple message, “It gets better,” but admits being different is always going to be a challenge. “There’s always gonna be people that are scared of it. Dan Savage’s It Gets Better Project continues to get bigger: Chaz Salvatore Bono, the son of Cher and Sonny Bono, has released his own video encouraging Lgbt youth to remain positive and describing his struggle coming out as a transgender man a year and a half ago. “Even as an adult, I was living with this secret, and feeling weird. And I got it out, and, once again, I feel great. And I found myself in a new community, and embraced,” he says in the video. “If I had left any of the fear that I had at different points throughout my life,...

Chaz Bono's transformation into a man is almost complete. Cher's daughter is about to become her son, he just needs to get rid of his birth name Chastity and have his birth certificate state that he is a boy.
Chaz, the multi-award winning actress/singer's daughter with ex-husband Sonny Bono, has filed a petition on March 24 to legally change his gender from female to male. He also wants his name to be changed from Chastity Sun Bono to Chaz Salvatore Bono.
The petition, obtained by TMZ, also includes a statement from Dr. Michael L. Brownstein, saying he performed an "irreversible surgical procedure" on the 40-year-old gay rights advocate on September 23 and that his gender reassignment surgery is complete.
A hearing on the matter is set for May 6.
