Spyglass Entertainment has tapped Matt Johnson to write Baja 1000, an action adventure set against the backdrop of the annual Baja 1000 off-road race. The story centers on a mechanic from Southern California who heals a rift with his father and simultaneously realizes his dream of racing the Baja 1000. Described as the Indy 500 for off-road enthusiasts, the Mexico race attracts hundreds of thousands of people, including such celebrities as Indy racer Mario Andretti and James Garner. Spyglass obtained the rights to make a film featuring the Baja 1000 from SCORE, the official sanctioning body of the race. Roger Birnbaum, Gary Barber and Jonathan Glickman are producing, while Sal Fish is executive producing. June Seley-Kimmel will serve as co-producer. Ivan Oyco is shepherding for Spyglass. Johnson, who wrote Warner Bros. Pictures' Torque and Sony Pictures' Into the Blue, is repped by UTA, Kaplan/Perrone Entertainment and attorney Adam Kaller.
