Goals from Marko Arnautovic and Mame Diouf secured a sensational five minute comeback as Stoke fought back from two goals down against Tottenham Hotspur.
Spurs will regret not putting the game out of Mark Hughes’ side’s reach as they squandered a hatful of clear-cut opportunities in what proved to be a very entertaining fixture.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side took the leader in the 19th minute after Eric Dier’s header from a Christian Eriksen corner flew past Jack Butland and into the net.
Spurs’ lead was doubled when Nacer Chadli volleyed the ball home after a Ben Davies cross found him at the back post.
Stoke’s revival started after they were awarded a penalty in the 77th minute after Toby Alderweireld brought down Joselu.
Arnautovic scored from the penalty spot and just five minutes later Diouf levelled after heading home from a Stephen Ireland cross.

The only goal came on just before the half hour, Oscar bending a free kick from 22 yards out into the far left corner after a foul on Samuel Eto’o by Erik Pieters, as Chelsea beat Stoke by a single goal at Stamford Bridge.
The first half started at a fast tempo, and both sides had a good chance to open the score. Inside the first six minutes Samuel Eto’o received the ball with his back to goal inside of the box, turned and fired inches wide of the far post, then peter Crouch headed wide from four yards after Simon Walters cross was deflected.
The game began to settle as both sides struggled for momentum, but that changed when Oscar showed his dead ball prowess. In the final five minutes of the half the game really opened, Frank Lampard coming so close to tapping...

Everton will attempt to sign Stoke City striker Kenwyne Jones for a knockdown price of just £1 million.
Tuesday’s Guardian revealed Toffees manager Roberto Martinez has identified Trinidad and Tobago frontman Jones, 29, as a bargain basement replacement for Nikica Jelavic as the Croatian will join Hull City Tigers.
Jones has six months left on his contract at the Britannia Stadium. He has fallen out of favour under Potters boss Mark Hughes this season. Despite being prolific in cup competitions this term, Jones has scored just 13 Premier League goals since moving to the Britannia Stadium from Sunderland for £8 million in 2010.
Stoke bolstered their own attacking options with the permanent capture of Stephen Ireland from Aston Villa and the loan signing of Manchester City striker John Guidetti. Jones thus could be sold in the winter window to ensure he is not lost for nothing in the summer.

Stoke City have signed Sweden striker John Guidetti on loan from Manchester City for the rest of the season after making midfielder Stephen Ireland’s spell at the Britannia Stadium permanent.
Premier League rules only allow for two loan players to be in a club squad, so Potters boss Mark Hughes moved quickly for Guidetti once Ireland moved from Aston Villa.
Guidetti, 21, has one cap for Sweden but has struggled at the Etihad to make an impact because of stellar attacking options available to Manuel Pellegrini and his own injury problems. During the 2011-12 campaign, he scored 20 goals in 23 Eredivisie games on loan at Dutch heavyweights Feyenoord.
Of Guidetti, Hughes said to Stoke’s official website:
“We wanted to try and add different options to our attacking threat and John will certainly do that. He’s someone who if you get him in the right areas...

Can Newcastle continue their recent good run of form when they take on Stoke on Boxing Day and keep up their push for a Europa League spot in the New Year?
Team News
Newcastle will be without suspended Chieck Tiote for the visit of Stoke after the midfielder picked up his fifth yellow card of the season against Crystal Palace.
Vurnon Anita is likely to step in as a replacement and will compete for a spot in the starting XI with Hatem Ben Arfa.
Stoke boss Mark Hughes must decide whether to continue with Charlie Adam in his midfield or revert to Stephen Ireland – Adam impressed in his side’s 2-1 win over Aston Villa while Ireland was ineligible to play against his parent club.
Defender Robert Huth is out until the New Year as he continues his rehabilitation from a knee operation.

Ashley Young scored his first club goal since May 2012 as Manchester United survived stormy weather to win at Stoke City in the Capital One Cup quarter-finals. David Moyes’s Red Devils edged a match of few chances with captain Patrice Evra also on target.
Young fired wide into the side-netting for United as hosts Stoke survived an early scare. Anderson then worked Thomas Sorensen in the home goal with a low effort midway through the first half.
Referee Mark Clattenburg briefly brought the players off amid a hailstorm. The delay lasted about eight minutes. Just before half time both Red Devils centre backs almost combined for a corner when Chris Smalling nodded across to the unsuspecting Jonny Evans.
Just after the hour the visitors went ahead as Young emphatically ended his goal drought, smashing home after a one-two with sub Javier Hernandez. Evans then looped a header...

A late Darren Bent winner helped ease the pressure on threatened manager Martin Jol as Fulham beat Stoke by a single goal at Craven Cottage. Ex-Fulham boss Mark Hughes was left to rue two very strong penalty decisions that went against his side in the first half.
The referee, Mr East, was the focus of the first half, turning down three clear penalties, two for Stoke and one for Fulham.
A Phillipe Senderos slide on Stephen Ireland was given a goal kick by Mr East, while a Fernando Amorbieta trip on Jon Walters was brought back for an early clip involving the same two men outside the box. The free kick was deflected by the wall for a corner, from which Robert Huth saw a header cleared off the line by Sacha Reither.
Fulham were restricted to long range efforts as, the enigmatic Dimitar Berbatov apart, the home side failed to show the required class.

Stoke manager Mark Hughes could hand a debut to former Manchester City star Stephen Ireland on Saturday, who arrived on a season-long loan from Aston Villa on transfer deadline day.
The Potters boss has virtually a fully-fit squad to select from, though midfielder Charlie Adam is a slight doubt having picked up a knock.
City meanwhile do not have the same luxury, with manager Manuel Pellegrini again set to be without Vincent Kompany, as well as new signing Martin Demichelis.
Micah Richards remains out with an ankle problem while David Silva is a doubt having injured his thigh on international duty with Spain.
Striker Stevan Jovetic could be handed a debut, however.

Stoke City have completed the loan signing of former Irish international Stephen Ireland from Aston Villa, reports Sky Sports News and RTÉ Sport
The 27-year old midfielder had been informed by manager Paul Lambert that he was surplus to requirements at Villa Park, and Stoke have swooped late to secure the services of the controversial figure. Ireland is understood to have been in search of regular first-team football, which he couldn’t be guaranteed at the Birmingham outfit.
The move reunites Ireland with Mark Hughes, who is a big admirer of the Cobh-born central midfielder, and was his manager at Manchester City. Whether he’ll play regularly for the Potters is another question entirely, but it’s a good eperienced midfield signing for Stoke as they look to consolidate their place in the top division.
Ireland had yet to feature for Villa this season and had previously spent an unsuccessful loan period at Newcastle United.

Aston Villa are looking to sign last year’s Europa League top-scorer Libor Kozak in an effort to bolster their offensive line, according to Metro.
The Villains already boast Gabriel Agbonlahor, Nicklas Helenius and Christian Benteke up front but hope to sign the 24-year-old as a potential fourth option.
The Lazio striker failed to score in the Rome club’s Serie A campaign last season but proved a threat in European competition, notching an impressive 10 goals.
Paul Lambert’s side are not the first Premier League outfit to take an interest in the 6-foot-3 dangerman, with Sunderland expressing an interest last month.
Yet with the hours in the transfer window counting down, the West Midlands-based club are looking to be clear front-runners for the Czech international’s signature.

Christian Benteke is set for crunch talks with Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert today, according to The Sun.
The highly-rated Belgian international emerged as a target for Tottenham Hotspur last week after stunning his club by handing in a transfer request, just one year after signing from Genk.
The 22-year-old reported back for training at Villa’s Bodymoor Heath base after sitting out the club’s three-match tour of Germany.
He has rejoined his West Midlands teammates ahead of their preparations for the new season, which kicks off next month, and boss Lambert hopes the youngster will still be wearing a claret and blue shirt come August.
The Scottish manager was quoted by Sky Sports as saying:
“While we’re hugely disappointed that Christian has put in a transfer request, it’s important that people appreciate we are trying to build something strong and vibrant here at the club, something...

This fixture was last played four years ago in the Premier League. Villa won 3-1 thanks to a John Carew brace. And what we wouldn’t have given for more than one goal as both teams played very poor football in what was a boring match. Neither Reading nor Aston Villa would look out of place in the championship as both squads have little quality and are built on defensive stability. One of the best players on the park, however, was Villa frontman Christian Benteke. His 80th minute header was the difference between the two sides and he showed that he is a class above the majority of players on the park.
Aston Villa made two changes to the team that drew 0-0 with Arsenal. Karim El-Ahmadi and Ron Vlaar were replaced by youngsters Ashley Westwood and Nathan Baker. Villa played a 4-2-3-1 formation.

16th placed Aston Villa make the trip down to London having drawn their last match 1-1 at home to West Brom. After a stuttering start, it appears that the Villa players are starting to come round to Paul Lambert’s style of play and seem to have turned a corner after the humiliating defeat they suffered at the hands of Southampton. However the apparent fall out between Lambert and star striker Darren Bent is unlikely to have a positive effect on the rest of the team, added to which the continuing fall-out between Paul Lambert and old club Norwich City can also be classed as bad timing.
Tottenham, meanwhile, having drawn 1-1 in Greece during the week in the Europa League, are likely to be raring to go after their 3-2 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford last weekend. With rumours of player unrest towards Andres Villas-Boas,...

It wasn’t the greatest game to watch, and in all honesty, Newcastle United can probably feel lucky to have come away with a point, looking short of match sharpness at times and even shorter on ideas at others. The long-ball failed to pay many dividends, and both Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba cut mostly frustrated figures despite a few good chances, and it fell to Frenchman Hatem Ben Arfa to wave his wand and score a beauty of a goal with his supposedly weaker right foot.
But a point is a point, and four points from the first three Premier League games isn’t something to be sniffed at particularly when those games included Spurs and Chelsea. So what sort of performances did the Magpies players put in against Villa at St. James’ Park on Sunday?

An uninspiring Newcastle United needed a moment of magic from gifted Frenchman Hatem Ben Arfa to overcome a dogged and determined (not to mention dirty) Aston Villa side in the Tyneside sunshine on Sunday afternoon, as the former Marseille man fired in a wonder-goal to level the scores at 1-1 and send the small pocket of travelling Villains away ruing missed chances.
Neither team was particularly exciting to watch, though Villa can probably claim to have enjoyed the best of a largely boring first-half in which Newcastle’s narrow 4-4-2 failed to take advantage of Villa’s shakey full-backs. But it could have been a lot different as early as the second minute, captain Fabricio Coloccini missing a good chance to score when Yohan Cabaye’s free-kick dropped to him ten or so yards out.
The Magpies then followed up this early pressure with a good shout for...

Tottenham Hotspur know that two wins in their final two games of the season will see them finish third with guaranteed Champions League football for next season. Thanks to Arsenal slipping up yesterday, they would finish above The Gunners with two wins and above Newcastle United on goal difference if they were to win their two games also, and would not need to rely on Chelsea losing in Munich for fourth place to qualify.

Team news ahead of a vital clash for Aston Villa as they travel to the Hawthorns to face West Brom. Villa have suffered a horrible run of results under boss Alex McLeish, winning only 1 in their last 13 which has left them only three points ahead of the drop zone.

A cold day at Villa Park was in no way warmed by the football on show. Manchester City claimed the all important three points against Aston Villa thanks to a goal from Joleon Lescott, but it was ultimately a game that will be best forgotten by players and fans alike. An important win regardless though as it puts the Sky Blues back at the top of table. A terrible performance by the hosts though – they need to improve considerably and fast too if they want to stay clear from the drop zone.

Team news ahead of Arsenal’s Fa Cup Fourth Round match against Aston Villa at the Emirates.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger will assess Thierry Henry with a late fitness test to see if he can take part. He is struggling to shake off a knock, and similarly Mikel Arteta and defender Bacary Sagna are late concerns. Midfielder Jack Wilshere though has definitely been ruled out after suffering a setback in his recovery from ankle injury.
There is better news for Arsenal in the form of defender Francis Coquelin being back in contention after hamstring problem and that Kieran Gibbs should return to full training next week after his groin injury.
Meanwhile Carl Jenkinson (back), Abou Diaby (hamstring) and Andre Santos (ankle) all miss out with long term problems and strikers Gervinho and Marouane Chamakh are away on African Cup of Nations duty.

There have been some notable problems thus far this season: there is still a vocal element of the crowd who are fundamentally opposed to Alex McLeish’s tenure as manager. For those fans, the club will stagnate under the former Birmingham City manager, as long as his tea continues to play anti-progressive, unexciting football, eeking out points where possible and without any sort of panache. The squad boasts a number of players unsuited to the cause, or if the papers are to be believed, unwilling to play for it.
The early days of the transfer window have already linked Villa with several deals, both incoming and outgoing, with young Irishman Enda Stevens having signed a pre-contract in the summer and now joining the cause from Shamrock Rovers and rumours linking Darren Bent with yet another move. Even if that doesn’t happen, with the always under-valued Emile Heskey confirmed injured for a month or so,...

The tightly packed run of festive fixtures come to an end this week and Aston Villa will be hoping to continue the momentum of their 3-1 win over Chelsea against shaky away opposition in the form of Swansea to break their home form hoodoo of late.
However whilst they possess the worst away record in the league, Swansea will be coming off the back of a very impressive performance against Tottenham. Brendan Rodgers will no doubt want his team to emulate that performance to possibly get the better of their opponents for their first win on the road to start 2012 with a bang.
The teams met less than a month and a half ago at the Liberty Stadium where they fought out to a 0 – 0 draw but it could be a much different result this time around.
Villa shown that they are no pushovers in their tie against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge after Stephen Ireland,...

After an awful week for Sir. Alex Ferguson where his side dropped two points against Newcastle United and were forced out of the Carling Cup at the hands of Crystal Palace at Old Trafford, at least the veteran boss can be thankful that history is on his side for today’s late Premier League kick-off against Aston Villa.
Villa have only won once against Man Utd in 29 home and away meetings and at Villa Park, Utd haven’t lost in their last fifteen visits – not since the days of Dwight Yorke scoring for the home side, only to be then quickly snatched up by Fergie so that he wouldn’t do it again!
Ferguson today comes up against his old defensive key man Alex McLeish, who played under the Scottish boss three decades ago at Aberdeen and who still hasn’t warmed himself after his move from local rivals Birmingham.

(P.S. – I am a Newcastle United fan, so as always my match previews are bias);
After an impressive start to the season, Newcastle United visit the midlands with a trip to Villa Park this afternoon for what was once a happy hunting ground, but in recent years has been one that has only held misery and pain! This was the ground in 2004 when Bobby Robson lost his job after a 2-1 defeat on the backs of a bad start to the campaign, and since 2006 it’s been a run of four straight defeats with only one goal scored in return – including a day few Geordies will forget when Alan Shearer’s defeated 11 went crashing out of the Premier League with a whimper and without a prayer.
And going in today’s 3pm kick-off, few would predict them to actually score today. Not only are they going up against a...

With Manchester City struggling to fit all their superstars into a squad of just 25, it’s expected manager Roberto Mancini will allow a fair few high-earning players to leave the club today on Transfer Deadline Day. We’ve already heard of Craig Bellamy and Shaun Wright-Phillips who are likely to leave for Queens Park Rangers and now comes an intriguing tweet from Stewart Downing at the England training ground;
“James Milner has left the England camp. Don’t ask me why”
Now is Downing saying ‘don’t ask me why’ because he simply doesn’t know – Or – does he actually know but can’t tell anyone. There’s rumours being battered around that Downing’s club Liverpool might be interested in making a last minute move for James Milner as Kenny Dalglish continues his incredible ‘buy British’ spending spree. And if the interest is genuine, the likelihood is it would...
