A crowdfunder has been launched to reopen Filmhouse, which closed its doors last year Photo: Max Crawford A £250,000 fundraising campaign has been launched in a bid to reopen Edinburgh's Filmhouse - which closed its doors last year after the collapse of its parent charity the Centre for the Moving image. The fundraiser is part of a wider campaign to raise £1.25 million.
The crowdfunder aims to raise sufficient funds to refurbish the cinema after which they will enter a 21-year lease with Caledonian Heritable - which acquired the building earlier this year - operating once again as an independent cinema venue.
Newly formed charity Filmhouse (Edinburgh) Ltd. and Caledonian Heritable has agreed an interim lease to enable a period of fundraising for the essential refurbishment works to the cinemas and public areas. Caledonian Heritable is currently undertaking a programme of upgrades to the fabric and will gift all projection equipment to the new Filmhouse,...

The Glasgow Film Theatre, which was one of the last venues in the world to host a major film festival before lockdown, is to reopen on the last day of August, it was announced today. Cinemas in Scotland are allowed to reopen from 15 July but staff at the venue want to make sure that all due safety measures are in place to minimise risk to the public from Covid-19.
"We have taken the decision that we want to re-open as safely as possible, and the planning and implementation of our safety plan to achieve that takes time and training. We are working with our staff to devise a safe operating plan in accordance with the guidance provided by the UK Cinema Association," said Glasgow Film CEO Allison Gardner. "We will be taking our time to make sure we have everything in place...

Speaking out with Because We Are Girls at the Glasgow Film Festival Photo: Max Crawford
The blues skies were back on Tuesday morning for day eight of the Glasgow Film Festival and a good thing it was too, as the queue for Andrej Tarkovsky’s haunting science fiction classic, Stalker. Those not attending the screening were slow to arrive at festival hub the Gft, as festival fatigue had clearly begun to set in, but there were still people planning to see four films in the course of the day and one member of the public was already on his twelfth of the festival.

The original Mr Cosmo welcomes film fans Photo: Max Crawford
Iconic Glasgow cinema the Gft (once called the Cosmo) is to celebrate its 80th anniversary next month with a four day weekend of free screenings open to the public. The cinema, known internationally as the home of the Glasgow Film Festival and once described by Quentin Tarantino as a venue that "f**king rocks," underwent extensive renovations in recent years, acquiring a third screen in the process, and will be celebrating its success from the 9th to the 12th of May.
The films screening as part of the event are Olivia Wilde's directorial début Booksmart, David Lynch's Mulholland Drive, family favourite The Wizard Of Oz and Giuseppe Tornatore’s beguiling Cinema Paradiso. Although they're free, the screenings are ticketed to avoid overcrowding and disappointment.
"When the Cosmo opened in 1939, it was the first purpose-built art house cinema outside of London.
