- On February 2, 2007, issued an executive order requiring that all girls ages 11-12 be given give vaccine for the human pappilloma virus (HPV), a major cause of cervical cancer, before enrolling in public schools, beginning fall 2008. This makes Texas the first state to require the vaccine, assuming the legislature does not override it.
