Curated by the IndieWire Crafts team, Craft Considerations is a platform for filmmakers to talk about recent work we believe is worthy of awards consideration. In partnership with HBO Max, for this edition we look at how writing, directing, and editing was employed to maintain “Hacks” unique blend of comedy and drama going in its second season.
At the beginning of Season 1, conflict was immediate between Vegas standup legend Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and Ava (Hannah Einbinder), the disgraced up-and-coming comedy writer hired to punch up Deborah’s jokes. The different generations forced to work together is the central tension from which the show mines both conflict and comedy. Over the first season it’s revealed to the audience, and eventually to the characters themselves, that Deborah and Ava are two sides of the same comedy coin. Gradually, they form a creative partnership that allows each to (sometimes) see past the other’s faults,...

“It is the invisible art,” admits “Hacks” Emmy-nominated editor Jessica Brunetto in our recent webchat. She continues, “You do not want people to notice the editing. A lot of people don’t even understand what we do. I always find that funny; they think a show is shot and magically ends up on screen.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“Hacks” is about legendary comic Deborah Vance (Jean Smart), who is in the twilight of her career. With pressure mounting for her so give up the spotlight, she reluctantly hires young writer Ava (Hannah Einbinder) to freshen up her act. Brunetto explains, “’Hacks,’ does have a unique tone. It’s billed as a comedy but the episodes are serialized like a drama. That is a very hard balance to achieve.”

An editor’s task of crafting a brand-new comedy is always a daunting one; as they say, timing is everything. (Doing it all within a pandemic is also not a picnic.) But what if you had the luxury of some inside knowledge on the people you would be working with? Jessica Brunetto, celebrating her first Emmy nomination for her work cutting together HBO Max’s sleeper hit “Hacks,” just happened to have worked with at least two of its three creators before she ever took a seat at the editing table.
“I’d been working with [showrunners] Lucia Aniello and Paul W. Downs on the show ‘Time Traveling Bong’ on Comedy Central,” says Brunetto. “And I had also done the pilot of ‘Awkwafina is Nora from Queens‘ with Lucia, and that was basically when this show came along where I got to work with their partner Jen Statsky. It was almost like a home field advantage,...

I had M. Blash’s The Wait on my predictions list last year. A fitting title for the shot in Oregon, sophomore feature that wrapped production in 2010. Word is, it is clearly finished as footage was shown at the Afm last month. Jena Malone, Chloë Sevigny, Luke Grimes and Devon Gearhart star, while on the tech side we find Cinematographer Kasper Tuxen (3 Backyards), Production Designer Ryan Smith (For Ellen), and Editors Jessica Brunetto (Capitalism: A Love Story), Lance Edmands (director of Bluebird) and Justin Kelly.
