It's something most sleep-deprived parents can relate to: their child wakes them up in the middle of the night with the insomniac claim that there's someone in their room. Thankfully, usually it's just a figment of the imagination, but for the mom and dad in Nicole Taylor Roberts' short film Go To Bed Raymond, it's a frightful fact that they'll soon come face-to-face with themselves.
Part of last year's 20th Digital Studio’s Bite Size Halloween celebration on Hulu, Go To Bed Raymond recently screened at the Overlook Film Festival in New Orleans, and I caught up with the short film's writer, filmmaker Casimir Nozkowski (whom I had the great pleasure of meeting at Overlook), to discuss collaborating with director Nicole Taylor Roberts, seeing an audience's reaction to the short film, plans for a feature-length version of Go To Bed Raymond, and more!

As the sun bled out its final rays of warmth on New Orleans on March 30th, we gathered in bloodthirsty droves around the Prytania Uptown Theatre, eager to sink our teeth into the latest cinematic incarnation of Count Dracula with the world premiere of Renfield, featuring the Count himself, Nicolas Cage, in attendance. Standing in line wearing my The Lost Boys T-shirt and carrying a pair of vampire teeth in my pocket (I planned on inserting them over my incisors later that night at the Vampire Ball), I couldn’t believe that another Overlook Film Festival was upon us. I was still reeling from my first experiences with Overlook back in 2022, and about 10 months later, it was already time to return for another round of what I’ve come to know as “summer camp for horror fans.”
This year, the lineup was bigger than ever, and looking up and down...

Since 2017 Brian Tyree Henry has shown a good nose for great films: From the tidy indie “Crown Heights” to the blockbuster hit “Godzilla vs. Kong,”— his supporting performances often shine brightly in these packed ensembles. But directors rarely afford the charming, jovial actor with the leading roles his talent so richly deserves. In his feature directorial debut, the modest comedy “The Outside Story,” Casimir Nozkowski allows Henry to stretch his romantic muscles for a brisk tale of jealousy, missed chances, and rediscovering the best life can offer.

Sometimes being accidentally locked out of their comfort zone can lead people to purposely become more willing to engage in new circumstances that push their boundaries and make them more comfortable in forging a new path in life. That’s certainly the case for actor Brian Tyree Henry’s protagonist of Charles in the new comedy-drama, ‘The […]

Charles doesn’t see much reason to leave his sunny second-floor Brooklyn apartment. Everything can be delivered, he can do his video editing at the desk that’s right next to his kitchen, and after his recent break-up, he’s got little interest in human interaction. What could possibly entice him to leave? In “The Outside Story,” Casimir Nozkowski’s ambling, rambling feature directorial debut, the answer is “bad luck” and “narrative necessity.”
In his first lead role, Brian Tyree Henry brings nuance to Charles, the introverted homebody at the center of Nozkowski’s . Meant to debut at the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival, one of the first major film events to be cancelled last year, Charles’ quest to get out of the house now takes on an unexpected tone. "Do you know this man?" Samuel Goldwyn Films has released an official trailer for an indie dramedy titled The Outside Story, the first feature film from Casimir Nozkowski, which premiered at numerous virtual film festivals last year. An introverted editor living a vertical life in his second-floor apartment, nursing a broken heart after a rough breakup, is always on deadline and in a rut. When Charles locks himself out of his building, he must go horizontal and confront the world he's been avoiding in search of a way back inside. In order to find his way back inside, he's forced to interact with...his neighbors. Oh nooo! The very talented Brian Tyree Henry stars as Charles, with a fun cast including Sonequa Martin-Green, Sunita Mani, Michael Cyril Creighton, and Olivia Edward. This looks charming & amusing, more of a comedy than expected, but as an introvert I'm curious to see what...

So how do you deal with folks who just want to punch every homosexual man, woman, and other "gender-disabled" creature on the nose? Hold up a mirror so they can view their own obtuseness -- or teach their victims to be victors?
Gossipist Perez Hilton, whom many rifle-toting, Bible-thumping parents would not want near their tots, wrote a book not that long ago for ankle-biters entitled The Boy with Pink Hair. Vibrantly illustrated by Jen Hill, the tome is all about a young lad with coral locks born to loving parents who tell him to embrace his difference. He does exactly that and becomes a highly successful prepubescent cook whose recipes for pink goodies are gobbled up the globe over. Moral of the tale: "His difference did make a difference. Only his difference was not his pink hair -- not really. His difference was that he followed his own special...

Casimir Nozkowski is a writer/director and the co-founder of the Internets Celebrities, an injustice-exposing documentary group. He also sits on Rooftop Films' board of directors. His work has been featured in the New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, the Av Club, and on the Brian Lehrer Show, to name a few. Nozkowski's recent work includes the short, "Andrew Sarris: Critic in Focus" which premiered at the 2011 Telluride Film Festival and screened at Moma in September 2012 and the short "Caffe Capri," which screened at the 2013 Brooklyn Film Festival. He also writes and produces promotion for "Mad Men" and "Breaking Bad." What it's about: I collected comics when I was a kid. And I had a lot. When circumstances forced me to liquidate my collection, my only question was how. Ebay: too much trouble. Throwing them out: too sad. An epic stoop sale that I could film? Just right. On the challenges:...

The 11th annual Coney Island Film Festival, running Sept. 23-25, offers an exquisite blend of freak show, burlesque and cinematic oddities, featuring movies about reformed gang members, unwitting superheroes, rock ‘n’ roll heaven and tons and tons of short films.
The fest opens with the portrait of a real-life Coney Island badass, Keith Suber, a reformed gang member who now teaches kids that violence isn’t the solution to their problems in the documentary The Last Immortal, directed by Charles Denson.
However, the highlight of the festival — in Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film’s opinion — is the headbangin’ documentary Heavy Metal Picnic by Jeff Krulik and John Heyn, which beautifully relives the glory days of ’80s era rock ‘n’ roll Maryland in all its raucous glory. Featuring footage from an outrageous backwoods farm concert and a reunion among its (slightly) more mature participants. Read the official Bad Lit documentary review here.
