The brand-new Korean drama on Netflix is all about a satirical take on the reality television shows audiences watch on all kinds of small screens. It is a genre of television that brings out the voyeuristic side of people who find fun in peeping into the lives of the contestants who take part in these shows. The whole point of a reality show is to have cameras around the contestant that record their daily shenanigans. The 8 Show is a satirical take on it, and the makers bring in characters with several traits that are ideal for the reality show they had seemingly joined to gain money.
Jin-Su (Third Floor)
Ryu Jun-yeol, as Bae Jin-su, is the central character of The 8 Show. This show begins with his plight of lacking the financial means to close a debt. Bae Jin-Su is a typical young man with no prospects of living a lavish life.

"But don't you think it's too dangerous?" Of course not! Netflix has revealed a teaser trailer for a new game show dark comedy series called The 8 Show, from filmmaker Korean filmmaker Han Jae-rim. This series plays like a mashup between The Platform and Squid Game - another clever metaphor for capitalism and how awful it really is. It's yet another game show for Netflix, but this is a fictional series based on web comics. "An irresistible but brutal show's curtain will be rising." Eight contestants in financial hardship take part in Money Game, a reality competition with 44.8 billion Korean won up for grabs. To win they must endure 100 days in an empty concrete building - and all purchases carry a 1000x markup, subtracted from the prize winning pot. The building is 8 stories tall and they earn money as time passes, but also must spend it to survive. Starring Ryu Jun-yeol,...

Premiering in the City to City: Seoul sidebar of the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival, before it screened in Busan and Hawaii, “Cart” takes a rather thorough, if a bit melodramatic look at the lives of supermarket workers. I also have to admit that, since I had this type of job for almost 7 years, the movie hit a personal cord by highlighting the hardships these kinds of workers have to face.

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Ram Releasing. Director/writer: Jung Huh. Cast: Mi-seon Jeon, Jung-Hee Moon and Hyeon-ju Son. Hide and Seek is a Korean horror and thriller film from director Jung Huh. This film is more than just these two genres, though. It is also a mystery. A motorcycle helmet wearing killer is making a poor neighbour, in a run down apartment block. But, this film is not a simple slasher. Instead, Hide and Seek blends a couple of plotlines together in an intriguing fashion. Hide and Seek is one of the best Asian films this reviewer has seen in quite awhile. The film begins with a sideplot. A woman is tracked and attacked in an early scene. Then, the film begins a second, more central plot. Seong-soo (Hyeon-ju Son) is searching for his brother, who has recently gone missing. A friendly neighbour...
