Danny Boyle's lo-fi 2002 zombie apocalypse film "28 Days Later" caused a stir in the horror community for its grainy digital photography (shot by Anthony Dod Mantle) and for its introduction of "fast zombies" into the pop vernacular. The zombies in "28 Days Later" were, unlike most movie zombies seen up to that point, fast-moving and vicious rather than mindless and shambling. It is credited for breathing new life into the zombie genre, followed as it was by other zombie hits like the "Dawn of the Dead" remake, George Romero's "Land of the Dead," and the hit 2010 series "The Walking Dead." "28 Days Later" also tapped into a lot of America's post-9/11 ennui, presenting hard-edged images of urban desolation. Everyone felt like the world had ended, and Boyle aesthetically agreed.
"28 Days Later," penned by "Civil War" director Alex Garland, was followed by a sequel in 2007 called "28 Weeks Later,...

“Outer Range,” TV’s craziest sci-fi Western, is finally coming back for Season 2. On Monday, on the two-year anniversary of the series premiere, Prime Video dropped a trailer for the new season, which arrives on May 16.
“Outer Range” stars Josh Brolin as Royal Abbott, a Wyoming rancher who is having problems holding on to his land and his family. One day, he finds a mysterious hole on his property that might be some sort of portal through time. So now he has another, even bigger problem.
According to Amazon, Season 2 “propels its characters deeper into the void with profound and unforeseen circumstances that could shake the very foundations of time itself.” The trailer is packed with wild imagery, like Autumn (Imogen Poots) eating some black mineral dust and then her eyes turning the same color, and even wilder dialogue, like Royal Abbott musing about how it’s impossible to know...

Two years after it premiered, one of our favorite shows of 2022, “The Outer Range” returns this summer (read our review). Something of an unusual but welcome mix of “Yellowstone” family drama and existential “X-Files” sci-fi, “Outer Range” star Josh Brolin as a rancher in Wyoming fighting for his land and his family, who discovers something unfathomable on its outskirts. Brolin also makes his directorial debut with season two’s penultimate episode
The mindbending series also features an outstanding cast including Imogen Poots (“Baltimore”), Lili Taylor (“Manhunt”), Tamara Podemski (“Reservation Dogs”), Lewis Pullman (“Top Gun: Maverick”), Tom Pelphrey (“Ozark”), Noah Reid (“Schitt’s Creek”), Shaun Sipos (“Reacher”), Isabel Arraiza (“The Little Things”), Olive Abercrombie (“The Haunting of Hill House”), and Will Patton (“Horizon: An American Saga”), among others.

Kristen Stewart Says David Fincher Is ‘One of Five’ Directors Who Can Still Build Big Practical Sets
Kristen Stewart is calling out the gendered double standard for film budgets when it comes to crafting large practical sets.
During the “SmartLess” podcast, the former child actor and “Love Lies Bleeding” star reflected on working with auteur David Fincher for 2002 thriller “Panic Room” alongside Jodie Foster. Stewart shared that the luxurious brownstone used as the sole location for the home invasion feature was actually entirely built on a soundstage and in fact was not set in New York City but rather Manhattan Beach.
“It was, like, a fully functional brownstone built on a soundstage in Manhattan Beach,” the Oscar-nominated actress said. “Every outlet worked, it was mind-blowing. It was in a time where, like — well, I guess people do this. You just have to be, like, one of five men who are allowed to do it. But Fincher is one of those people, and he just built. You could live in it.

I first reviewed Green Room back in 2017 for my blog Wight Blood and gave it a score of 9/10. I don’t think I have watched it since so with this Second Sight 4k/Blu-ray release, I had the opportunity to see if it was just as good on second viewing.
The movie follows a punk band as they attempt to tour and book a last-minute gig at a neo-nazi bar with the promise of some decent money. They play the gig and attempt to leave as quickly as possible but after they witness something they shouldn’t have, things turn nasty and they get stuck in the green room with nowhere to go.

The Desperate Optimists, filmmakers Joe Lawlor and Christine Malloy take a different approach in their latest film, Baltimore, by basing it on a true story. The film follows Rose Dugdale (Imogen Poots), the English heiress who became a revolutionary. Drawn to Marxism she denounced her life of privilege, and joining the Ira’s fight for a united Ireland, on the 26th April 1974, Dugdale and three accomplices, Dominic (Tom Vaughan-Lawlor), Martin (Lewis Brophy) and Eddie (Jack Meade), stole 19 paintings from Russborough House, with the intent of leveraging them for the release of Ira prisoners.

Writer-director Jeremy Saulnier talks to us about the making of the 2015 survival thriller Green Room, which is getting a new disc release this month.
In October 2014, writer-director Jeremy Saulnier had a bit of a problem. Green Room, the follow-up to his micro-budget thriller, Blue Ruin, was nearing the start of shooting, but he still hadn’t managed to cast the role of Darcy – a club owner and leader of a group of rural Neo-Nazis. Most worryingly, as sets for the film were being built, Green Room’s financiers had threatened to withdraw funding if Saulnier couldn’t find a ‘name’ actor.
Fortunately for Saulnier, the script had been sent out to the legendary Patrick Stewart, and despite – or perhaps because of – the less-than-appealing nature of the Darcy character, he agreed to star at the last minute. “He kind of saved the movie,” Saulnier tells us almost a decade on.

Kristen Stewart wanted to do the “gayest fucking thing” for her March Rolling Stone cover.
In the cover story, Stewart talks about her desire to flip gender roles with her spread. “If I go through the entire Twilight series without ever doing a Rolling Stone cover, it’s because the boys were the sex symbols,” she says. “Now I want to do the gayest fucking thing you’ve ever seen in your life. If I could grow a little mustache, if I could grow a fucking happy trail and unbutton my pants, I would. Guys — I’m sorry — but their fucking pubes are shoved in my face constantly, and I’m like, ‘Ummmm, bring it in.'”
The photos feature a mullet-clad Stewart wearing jock straps and basketball shorts, shot in a way that has more in common with Jeremy Allen White’s Calvin Klein campaign than Rolling Stone’s past bikini-clad covers.

To say there is quite a bit of debate surrounding the situation facing Palestinians in Gaza right now is a gross understatement. On one side, you have the Israeli government justifying violence based on the Hamas attack last October. And on the other side, you have the Palestinian people getting killed by the thousands with no end in sight, with some calling it a genocide. But even though it feels like a relatively new situation for many people who started to really pay attention to what’s happening, this is a war that has been raging for decades.

At the Cannes Film Festival in 2018, Kristen Stewart announced that her feature directorial debut would be an adaptation of “The Chronology of Water,” the 2011 memoir by author Lidia Yuknavitch. Since then, Stewart has been pounding the pavement to drum up financing for the project. But despite her track record of headlining some of the most well regarded independent films of the last 10 years — from “Clouds of Sils Maria” to “Spencer” — and despite the fact that Imogen Poots is attached to star as Yuknavitch, and that Ridley Scott is producing through his production company Scott Free, Stewart has been unable to secure the backing she needs to move forward.
This frustrating experience has pushed Stewart to make a surprising announcement about “The Chronology of Water” during her interview for Variety’s Jan. 11 cover story.
“I’m going to make this movie before I ever work for someone else,” she says, before breaking into nervous laughter.

Exclusive: Amazon MGM Studios’ Orion Pictures has entered production on Hedda, its reimagining of Henrik Ibsen’s famed 1891 stage play Hedda Gabler, announcing the addition of six to its cast. Newcomers include Imogen Poots (Baltimore), Tom Bateman (Thirteen Lives), Finbar Lynch (Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan), Mirren Mack (The Witcher: Blood Origins), Jamael Westman (Hamilton), and Saffron Hocking (Top Boy).
The actors join an ensemble that also includes Tessa Thompson, Nina Hoss, and Nicholas Pinnock, as previously announced.
Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler revolves around Hedda Tesman, a newlywed stifled by societal norms. Frustrated and trapped, she resorts to manipulation and destructive actions. As secrets unravel, the play explores themes of power, gender roles, and the tragic consequences of societal expectations in the late 19th century.
Directing from her own script is Nia DaCosta, the filmmaker behind Uni’s newest Candyman horror pic and the acclaimed crime drama Little Woods. Producers include Plan B,...

Danny Boyle's "28 Days Later" emerged as a jarring entry in the zombie-horror genre for several reasons. Primarily, the film introduced a brand of infected that defied conventional attitudes associated with the shuffling undead, as their hunger in this context is defined by uncontrollable, murderous rage. Aptly dubbed the Rage virus, this epidemic grips the streets of Britain and pushes this corner of the world towards an apocalypse, leaving scant survivors to reckon with a reality too brutal to comprehend. The true merit of "28 Days Later" is its ability to distill grounded apocalyptic fears into a visceral sense of dread, which is overcome and channeled into hope for humanity in the end.
This flickering hope is unceremoniously crushed in Juan Carlos Fresnadillo's "28 Weeks Later," which, as the title suggests, picks up exactly 28 weeks after the Rage virus outbreak. Although the sequel lacks the startling humanity of...

As the Butterscotch Stallion turns 55, we look back at his most memorable roles, from a courageous navy officer to a cute sports car to a doltish male model
This was a late-period Peter Bogdanovich film, a screwball spin on Ernst Lubitsch, that had Imogen Poots as the golden-hearted sex worker trying to break into show business. She walks into an audition in front of a big-shot Broadway director and realises he is the man to whose Manhattan hotel room she had gone the night before. And that director is played by Owen Wilson, with that good-natured, halting Texas drawl which was to feature to some degree in all of his performances. He is a pretty bland nice guy here – a default mode he sometimes goes into a bit too easily.

Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea Film Festival has announced the bulk of its lineup from the Middle East and North Africa (Mena), signaling that the event is forging ahead with its third edition despite the Israel-Hamas war that has caused cancellations of several movie celebrations across the Arab world.

"Need for Speed" tends to get unceremoniously left out of the conversation about video game movies. Released in 2014, the film debuted at the height of Aaron Paul's post-"Breaking Bad" fame. Paul stars as Tobey Marshall, a former race car driver turned working-class mechanic from New York whose friend is killed by Tobey's wealthy rival Dino Brewster (Dominic Cooper) during an illegal street race -- a crime that Tobey is wrongly arrested and convicted for. Upon his release from prison, Tobey sets out to defeat Dino in a San Francisco race. However, for reasons that are too complicated to get into here, he must do so by first driving across the country in a rare Mustang he helped restore in less than 48 hours. Also, Imogen Poots is riding shotgun with him.

The Teacher, the feature debut of British-Palestinian director Farah Nabulsi that recently had it world premiere in Toronto, has been acquired by Front Row Filmed Entertainment for the Middle East and North Africa.
The deal marks the second collaboration between Nabulsi and Front Row, with the Dubai-based banner having distributed and globally sold her previous short film The Present to Netflix, prior to it landing an BAFTA award and an Oscar nomination.
Set and shot in the West Bank city of Nablus and staring Saleh Bakri (Alam, The Blue Caftan) and Imogen Poots (The Father, HBO’s I Know This Much Is True), The Teacher follows the story of a Palestinian school teacher as he struggles to reconcile his life-threatening commitment to political resistance with his emotional support for one of his students and the chance of a new romantic relationship with a British volunteer worker. “The Teacher” opens with text informing the viewers that the film was “Inspired by True Events.” Most obviously, this refers to the case of Gilad Shalit, an Israel Defense Forces soldier whose imprisonment by Palestinian militants and 2011 release in exchange for over 1,000 Palestinian prisoners is lightly fictionalized during the movie. But more broadly, it speaks to the film’s commitment to portraying the struggles of living in Palestine in a time of perpetual strife, where violence and displacement is a constantly looming threat and justice feels constantly out of reach.
Although Shalit’s capture and release inspired the backbone of Farah Nabulsi’s debut feature, his counterpart in the film, Nathanial Cohen, is a mere plot device spoken about more than he’s glancingly seen. Our protagonist is instead completely fictional Basem, a Palestinian man who teaches English at a small boys school. At his job he’s stern but gentle,...

Three years ago, Farah Nabulsi’s short film “The Present” landed an Oscar nomination and won a BAFTA Award by stripping down the conflict between Palestinians and Israelis on the West Bank to a father and daughter’s simple quest to buy an anniversary present. Nabulsi, who was born in London to Palestinian parents, returns to that region and conflict with her feature debut, “The Teacher,” but there’s nothing simple about the morass into which her filmmaking plunges us this time around.
Inspired by true events, the film is set among Palestinians on the West Bank, and like “The Present” it’s a portrait in futility. “The Teacher,” which had its world premiere on Saturday at the Toronto International Film Festival, sometimes feels as if it’s hammering away at the same points without getting anywhere, but you could argue that’s an entirely fitting way to depict the conflicts in that area.

Few filmmakers have to experience the very real thing they’re dramatising on camera actually happening around their set. But then few films are set and shot in the Occupied West Bank.
As Farah Nabulsi recalls, while making The Teacher around the city of Nablus, she witnessed the forced demotion of a Palestinian home by Israeli forces and settlers torching Palestinian olive trees, both of which take place in her film.
“On my way to set at five in the morning, by the side of the road was a Palestinian family, a couple with six young children, standing in front of the rubble of their freshly demolished house,” she says. “So yeah, this harsh reality is unfolding around you.”
Premiering in Toronto on Sept. 9, the film follows a school teacher (Palestinian acting royalty Saleh Bakri) precariously trying juggling his dangerous involvement in the resistance movement with his position as a...

When British-Palestinian filmmaker Farah Nabulsi was watching the UK media coverage of the Gilad Shalit prisoner exchange in 2011, it had a profound impact on her. At the time, Shalit was an Israeli soldier who had been abducted in 2006 by Palestinians (the first Israeli soldier to be captured by Palestinians since 1994). Shalit was eventually released five years later in exchange for more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners, including hundreds of which were women and children.
“I remember thinking at the time that this was such a huge imbalance in the value for human life,” Nabulsi tells Deadline over a Zoom interview from Egypt, where she is attending her stepdaughter’s wedding. “One person in exchange for one thousand others! But I also remember thinking about that on an individual level and that, to that soldier’s parents and loved ones, he would be worth hundreds of thousands if not millions of lives.”

Variety is debuting an exclusive clip from Farah Nabulsi’s thriller “The Teacher,” starring Imogen Poots (“The Father”) and Saleh Bakri. The film will have its world premiere on Saturday at the Toronto Film Festival in the Discovery section.
The film is Nabulsi’s feature debut following her Oscar-nominated and BAFTA award-winning short “The Present,” which also starred Bakri.
“The Teacher” follows Palestinian schoolteacher Basem (Bakri), who acts as a father figure to two of his students, Yacoub and Adam (Muhammad Abed Elrahman), amidst turmoil in the West Bank. Upon meeting British volunteer worker Lisa (Poots), Basem struggles to reconcile his life-threatening commitment to political resistance and his emotional support for Yacoub and Adam with the chance of a new romantic relationship.
The story – based on true events – takes place against the backdrop of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, offering insight into the lives of the people living in the region from all religious and cultural backgrounds.

Baltimore — whose title refers to a village in County Cork, Ireland — begins in the midst of a heist, but it’s not a heist film. And its starting point is not just any heist but the largest art theft in history, pulled off by four Ira members led by a onetime debutante, Rose Dugdale. She’s the focus of Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor’s concise and intimate film, and she’s played with a compelling mix of ferocity, focus and conscience by Imogen Poots.
As a few incisive flashbacks reveal, Rose grew up in immense wealth but never quite bought into the entitlement and expectations. At age 10, on her first fox hunt, her sympathies lie with the fox. On a museum visit, the teenage Rose baffles her mother when she’s moved by a painting’s focus on a Black woman; Mum sees a piece of pottery as the...
