When a property runs long enough, there are adaptations and versions of the characters that become infamous for being so off the mark and bizarre. There’s that time when Dennis Hopper played Bowser as a politician with silly hair in a dinosaur dystopia. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles once went on tour as a rock band. The United States made a Godzilla movie so bad that the monster was later killed within seconds in a fight against the true Godzilla. The animated series Captain N: The Game Master once introduced Alucard as a radical skateboarding teenager with sunglasses.
Captain N also gave us a terrible take on Mega Man, making him an annoying toddler-looking guy with a froggy voice. That isn’t the most infamous version of the Blue Bomber…even if he wasn’t even blue. No, that honor goes to the character on the cover of the first Mega Man game.

Your scent. It's like a drug to me. You're like my own personal brand of heroin. Or perhaps it's just that Lionsgate simply refuses to let sleeping dogs (shape-shifters?) lie, even now that we're more than a decade removed from the peak of "Twilight" fever. The studio has already revealed its intention to reboot Stephenie Meyer's YA fantasy romance phenomenon for the small screen as a TV series, which begs the question: how exactly does it plan to go about trying to rebottle the "stupid lightning in a stupid bottle" that was the original movie adaptations of Meyer's books, to quote /Film's Bj Colangelo? We now have part of the answer and, incredibly enough, it's not at all a bad idea.

Director Denis Villeneuve's "Dune: Part Two" is lighting the world on fire right now, much like Paul Muad'Dib's (Timothee Chalamet) jihad will be doing to the known universe after the movie's end. The sequel enjoyed a box office debut twice as big as the first "Dune" did in 2021. Unlike was the case with David Lynch's 1984 "Dune," which earned too little for sequels, it seems that Warner Bros. now has its next blockbuster franchise.
From the Worms to the Spice (which the movies hardly explain), the world of "Dune" is quite weird. One of this bizarre iceberg's tips is the villainous Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, leader of the Harkonnen feudal house. Played in the recent movies by Stellan Skarsgård, the Baron is about 600 pounds (reflecting his gluttonous wealth) and to get around, he doesn't walk, he floats with anti-gravity belts. Frank Hebert's original "Dune" books were an influence on...

Konami tried something new to inject new blood (no pun intended) into the Castlevania series with 2011’s Lords of Shadow, a new series that completely disregarded the established timeline. The result gave fans a cinematic platformer that dipped into the God of War series with its combat (for good and bad), but ultimately lacked that “something” for many that made it a Castlevania game. With Lords of Shadow 2, those hoping that things would get better were ultimately disappointed. It also didn’t help that reports after the game’s release illustrated Lords of Shadow 2‘s troubled development. But with 10 years now gone by, is that disappointment also lessened?
After the events of Lords of Shadow, where protagonist Gabriel Belmont (Robert Carlyle) becomes the vampire known as Dracula, Lords of Shadow 2 sees Gabriel awaken 1000 years after an encounter with his son, Alucard (Richard Madden), weakened and with no memory of why...

It’s hard to overstate the impact of a video game franchise that helped inspire a genre that’s still thriving today. Castlevania didn’t pull it off alone, of course. Samus Aran’s own 2D shenanigans helped light the way toward today’s Metroidvanias, with the stoic Chozo survivor and the vampire-hunting Belmont clan both making their debut on American Nintendo Entertainment Systems in 1987. Of course, at that time, Castlevania was a much different franchise.
Still, of the pair, Castlevania is arguably better known today. Konami’s sometimes frustrating genre shifts and silent treatment of the franchise made its fans all the more noisy, and there’s an acclaimed Netflix animated series turning complicated lore into something breezily entertaining. But it’s the games themselves that stick in our memory, with literally dozens of entries for aficionados to pick through. To help dig through the history of the Belmonts,...

The vampire killers have essentially lost by the final scene of Castlevania: Nocturne. Richter, Annette, Tera, and Maria’s plan to destroy the Abbot’s Forgemaster machine has failed miserably, Tera is forced to sacrifice herself to Erzsebet Báthory in order to save Maria, and now the remaining heroes are on the run. There’s basically nothing stopping Drolta Tzuentes and her legion of monsters from hunting down their opponents. But just as a bloodthirsty Drolta is about to strike at her prey, a sword pierces her through the heart. And it’s no ordinary blade that finally takes down the vicious vampire but the one belonging to Alucard.
Yes, James Callis returns as the son of Dracula in the final moments of Nocturne, setting up what will likely be a much bigger role for the fan-favorite dhampir in season 2. His surprise cameo makes a lot of sense,...

As an adaptation of one of the most popular action RPG franchises, Netflix’s Castlevania series hit the ball out of the park with refreshing, relatable characterization. The morally gray characters blurred the line between the conventional binary of good and evil, an aspect that made iconic characters like Dracula, Alucard, Trevor, and Sypha not only relatable but also kept their core essence intact, which resulted in a surge in the franchise’s fanbase at the same time. Even side characters like Isaac and Hector from the original series were given distinctive personalities and character arcs, the likes of which can rarely be seen in other adaptations of similar kinds.
Respecting the legacy of the original series, the spin-off Castlevania: Nocturne presents an interesting set of characters in its first season. Being set in the transitional period of the late 18th century, the series draws inspiration from the then-global political...

One major factor that made Netflix’s Castlevania animated series click among audiences was the detailed world-building centered on gothic trappings that replicated the original game series’ scope and settings perfectly. Through four seasons, viewers got to familiarize themselves with the expansive world, explore a number of character arcs, and indulge in speculation, as the series opened such a vista of phantasmagoria that even after ending, it left numerous possible waypoints for further exploration.
The follow-up series titled Castlevania: Nocturne, which is streaming on Netflix, takes the lore into the late eighteenth century, during the late phases of the Age of Enlightenment. An era marked by extreme antithetical aspects as, on the one hand, reason and revolution prevailed over the western world, but at the same time, the horrors of colonization were getting into full swing as well. With Netflix’s Castlevania: Nocturne looking like it will continue the success of the previous animated series, it’s probably not a coincidence that its inspiration, 1993’s Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Long considered one of the best, if not the best, entry in the series, Rondo of Blood paved the way for greater things for the series after its release. Even today, the game still remains an enjoyable romp, and is far more accessible now than it was back when it was released.
Set in 1792, Dracula has once again been resurrected. With the help of the dark priest Shaft, Dracula kidnaps four women on behalf of Dracula. One of those women is Annette, the beloved of 19-year-old Richter Belmont, a descendent of Simon Belmont. Richter sets out with his family’s Vampire Killer whip to rescue the four women, but also to destroy Dracula once again.

The animated Netflix series based on the Castlevania video game franchise wrapped up back in 2021 after a four season, 32 episode run – but if you were left wanting to see more Castlevania after watching that show, you’re in luck. Castlevania is getting a spin-off follow-up called Castlevania: Nocturne that’s set to make its Netflix debut on September 28th! With that date just two months away, a teaser trailer has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.
Set in 1792, during the French Revolution, Castlevania: Nocturne focuses on Maria Renard and Richter Belmont, a descendant of Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades. While the first series drew inspiration from Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse and Castlevania: Curse of Darkness, Nocturne is primarily based on the 1993 video game Castlevania: Rondo of Blood and its 1997 sequel Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

Kouta Hirano's action-horror manga "Hellsing" begins 100 years or so after Abraham Van Helsing defeated Dracula. Contrary to the account of Bram Stoker, the Lord of Vampires was not slain, merely cowed, and became the Helsing (eventually Hellsing) family retainer. Abraham's descendant, Sir Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing, leads an eponymous ghoul-hunting organization. Her top agents are the rechristened Alucard and his newly sired protégé, Seras "Police Girl" Victoria.
Hellsing's enemies are two-fold. First, there's Iscariot, the Vatican's vampire slayers who rival the Protestant Hellsing; Father Alexander Anderson is particularly dead-set on killing Alucard. Second, there's Millennium, a Nazi remnant who experimented with the occult and still intends to bring about a thousand-year Third Reich. If you're not much of a manga reader, don't fear, for "Hellsing" has been adapted into an animated series. However, if you're looking to watch the "Hellsing" anime, you'll have to decide: Which one? The animated Netflix "Castlevania" series has no shortage of talented voice actors, including Richard Armitage, Lance Reddick, and Bill Nighy, but one familiar voice might be harder to put a face on. Actor Emily Swallow is no stranger to genre storytelling, breathing life into characters from major geek properties in animation and live-action, but two of her most recent major roles have kept her face completely out of sight.

Netflix’s original Castlevania anime series may have come to a close with its fourth season, but the streaming service isn’t done with this universe of monsters and vampire hunters just yet. As longtime Castlevania fans know, just because Trevor Belmont, Sypha Belnades, and Alucard defeated Dracula in the 1400s doesn’t mean the Dark Lord will stay dead forever.
A sequel series called Castlevania: Nocturne will continue the story of the Belmonts never-ending battle against the forces of evil but it’ll focus on a whole new protagonist. Meet Richter Belmont, Trevor and Sypha’s descendant and heir to the family’s long legacy of vampire hunting.

While the original series based on the manga by Kota Hirano aired from 2001 to 2002, the story of the Hellsing Organization was picked up again in “Hellsing Ultimate”, an original video animation, produced by Satelight and Geneon Entertainment, and followed the original source more closely, adding more details to the characters and their storylines. No matter which version you enjoyed, there is no denying the appeal of the combination of elements of classical horror and dark fantasy which provided the core for the series, along with such colorful characters like Alucard. It is a series whose visuals linger on with the viewer for quite some time, while also playing with the themes of the classic horror tales it refers to frequently, mainly sexuality, temptation and seduction. Because “Hellsing Ultimate” is widely regarded as being the superior adaptation of the source material, it will be the focus of this review.

For four seasons, Netflix’s Castlevania has delivered a diamond standard of American animation in this criminally underrated series. More than just a powerhouse of Western anime styling, Castlevania has devoted itself to bloody, brilliant horror and competently tackling a piece of beloved source material. The entire series has been one hell of a ride and Castlevania’s fourth season brings the story to a close on a perfect note.

This Castlevania article contains spoilers.
Castlevania season 4 may be the end of the line for Trevor Belmont, Sypha Belnades, and Alucard, but it likely won’t be the last Netflix adaptation of the long-running video game franchise. In fact, the streamer is already planning a new series set in the same universe but starring different characters. What form this Castlevania series would take remains a well-kept secret, although a reasonable guess would be that it’ll take place during a different era before or after Trevor, Sypha, and Alucard’s adventures.
Konami’s prestige franchise has a timeline that spans hundreds of years, tracking the history of the Belmont clan, a family of monster hunters tasked with sending Dracula back to the grave every time he’s resurrected. According to the video game lore, Trevor is the closest descendant of Leon Belmont, the first in the line of vampire slayers.

Netflix renewed Castlevania pretty swiftly following its season 3 debut, and now creator Warren Ellis has taken to his personal website to give us a peek behind the curtain at that decision-making process. Turns out, Castlevania didn’t just coast through an increasingly dog-eat-dog streaming landscape after season 3 landed on the service back in March – it absolutely smashed its doors in.
“So, we had our Netflix call about the 28-day data on Castlevania Season 3 last week,” Ellis wrote. “Because Netflix data is protected, I can’t actually tell you all the exact numbers. What I can say is that season 3’s popularity was an order of magnitude over that of season 2, and season 2 was popular enough to get us season 3. It turns out season 3 did, really, shockingly well. Shows tend to show a little attrition in the third season, and it was, quote, “unusual” to see the audience actually rise by a multiple factor.

"To combat this, the outcast monster hunter 'Trevor Belmont' takes up arms against Dracula's forces, aided by the magician 'Sypha Belnades' and Dracula's 'dhampir' son 'Alucard'..."

If a now-deleted tweet from Netflix Nordic is any indication, the third installment of Castlevania will be on our screens as soon as next week.
Earlier today, the online streaming giant released a graphic detailing all of the many TV shows and movies headed to Netflix over the next four weeks, one of which was Castlevania season 3. Its official air date? December 1st, 2019, though the Powers That Be quickly pulled said tweet, casting doubt over the show’s Eta. We will, of course, keep you right up-to-date as more information comes to light.
Now entering its third year on the streaming service, Castelvania rose from humble beginnings: a four-episode season in which viewers were introduced to a grief-stricken Dracula, hell-bent on vengeance following the murder of his wife. Hoping to drive a stake through his heart is disgraced monster hunter Trevor Belmont, who hails from a family of vampire killers.

Castlevania Season 1 was the unexpected and criminally short hit Netflix introduced in 2017, and while it was a shame the season was so short, the streaming service did an amazing job at making sure the series was back the very next year for Season 2!
For those who don't remember where the story left off, Trevor Belmont, Sypha, and the half-human half-vampire Alucard all agreed to team up against Dracula to stop his evil crusade against the countryside. Season 2 has eight episodes set to drop October 26, and now a badass poster that will have you "seeing red.":

It's so red it almost hurts my eyes, but I'm willing to forgive one of the better anime shows of 2017 for the assault on my eyes. Are you excited for Season 2?...
