Sunderland look to win on the road this season at the eighth time of asking as they travel to East London to face fellow strugglers West Ham. Only a win will be good enough for the Black Cats if they want to avoid being the team sat bottom of the Premier League on Christmas Day, a position that has inevitably ended in relegation all but once in 21 seasons.
The Hammers could slip into the bottom three should they come away with anything other than 3 points, proving this is a must win game for both sides going into the busy Christmas period.

Marouane Chamakh showed former club West Ham what they were missing as the Moroccan gave Crystal Palace a scrappy and hard fought win over their London rivals.
Long ball tactics and head tennis made for a rather ugly beginning to this crunch London derby. Barry Bannan curled a cross-shot over and Jason Puncheon saw another Palace effort saved by Jussi Jaaskelainen.
West Ham then began passing and almost opened their hosts up with skipper Kevin Nolan touching a through-ball onto a narrowly offside Carlton Cole. Big Sam’s boys quickly took a stranglehold on possession.
A training ground free kick almost caught the home team out on half an hour, but Nolan failed to get proper contact when the ball was lofted in. Carlton Cole then got in behind the Eagles defence, but his low cross just eluded Stewart Downing.

Premier League basement club Crystal Palace entertain West Ham United for the first time in the top flight for over 15 years on Tuesday.
The last five meetings between these two London clubs have come in the Championship with Palace winning the 2004 playoff final. Tony Pulis knows as he prepares for his Eagles home debut that his side have only ever won three league games against the Hammers.
Sam Allardyce’s West Ham are one of a clutch of sides hovering three points above the relegation zone. Victory in this capital city derby will take his team up to 11th place for time being.
It would be a precious time for Palace to pick up their third win of the campaign and move off the bottom. Their form, however, gives fans little festive cheer. The Hammers meanwhile ended a winless run stretching five matches with victory over Fulham at the weekend.

Carlton Cole scored on his return to the West Ham team as Sam Allardyce’s side picked up a priceless win over Fulham at Upton Park.
The striker scored from close range with 8 minutes to go to seal a 3-0 win, adding to Senegalese midfielder Mohamed Diame’s 20 yard deflected strike on 47 minutes and Joe Cole’s goal in the 88th minute.
West Ham started the match brightly with both Stewart Downing and Matt Jarvis whipping dangerous balls into the box minutes after kick-off.
Downing was causing Fulham all sorts of problems from out on the right winger, skipping past Kieran Richardson, forcing the left back to scythe him down and earn a yellow card.
From the resulting free kick West Ham struck the post, striker Modibo Maiga unluckily seeing his header denied by the woodwork.

Norwich and West Ham are struggling of late. The former are certainly in worse form, and manager Chris Hughton knows he’s running out of time to turn the club around before the board will consider relieving him of his duties. He’s not been helped by the lack of goals from his two summer signings Gary Hooper and Rocky Van Wolfswinkel, and hopes the former can finally kick-start his Norwich career this weekend.
Big Sam also has goal troubles with West Ham. The side are greatly paying the price for over-relying on Andy Carroll, who’s been out all season, without having a viable replacement. As a result, the Hammers have often named a starting XI without a recognised striker, or with midfielder Kevin Nolan pushed higher up the pitch. It’s a game that doesn’t promise many...

For West Ham United; Matt Taylor, Alou Diarra, James Collins, Andy Carroll, Ricardo Vaz Te and Stephen Henderson are all confirmed absentees. Mladen Petric and James Tomkins are doubtful for the clash, so manager Sam Allardyce is hardly spoilt for choice with his squad.
The Villans are short of options at left-back, with Antonio Luna and Joe Bennett both ruled out of action, meaning centre-back Nathan Baker could deputise in their absence. Forward Gabriel Agbonlahor is also doubtful, meaning Lambert will most likely give the out-of-form Andi Weimann a start.

Those of us who travelled to Upton Park on Saturday went there more in hope than expectation. The two teams both had three clean sheets from their four Premier League games, and had only managed to score one goal between them in their last six games combined. A dour stalemate was expected, but fortunately for the neutral we were served a juicy slice of stereotypical English football.
The first half was a touch dour, with chances at a minimum, but left the spectator with a feeling that either team could still win. The second half was a blur of activity, goals, fouls, a red card, a penalty, two sumptuous free kicks and a toing and froing that saw one team take a hold, only for the other to suddenly ride a way of attacking impetus.
Here are five things we learned from a thrilling encounter…

Romelu Lukaku came off the bench to grab an 85th minute winner for Everton, extending their unbeaten start to the season. It was heartbreak for West Ham and Mark Noble at Upton Park, as the Irons captain scored from the spot to give his side the lead for the second time, only to get sent off soon after.
Leighton Baines scored two free kicks from near identical positions as the Toffees kept up their unbeaten record against the Hammers, with this result making it twelve consecutive games without defeat against their London opponents. Ravel Morrison’s deflected drive had given West Ham the lead.
The first significant chance had come after just five minutes when an Everton counter led to Jussi Jaaskelainen saving a Kevin Mirallas shot.
On 31 minutes, the ball went out to Matt Jarvis on the left. The England winger cut inside, ghosted past two men and laid the ball to Ravel Morrison.

Home Nations rivals Scotland and Wales will face-off tomorrow at Hampden Park, with both sides needing a win to keep any hope alive of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
The two bottom sides in Group A met last October at the Millenium Stadium with Wales emerging victorious thanks to a Gareth Bale double. James Morrison had earlier scored for the Scots and Steven Fletcher had a goal disallowed but like much of Craig Levein’s tenure as Scotland manager luck was not on their side.

On a night when the life of West Ham and England legend Bobby Moore was immaculately celebrated by all present, Upton Park was home to an exciting London derby that did the 1966 world cup winning captain proud.
West Ham made a lively start to the game and the first real test for either goalkeeper came in the 10th minute, when Matthew Jarvis cut inside and shot low to Hugo Lloris’ right, but the Frenchman was equal to it and held it well.
Almost immediately, Spurs countered quickly and Aaron Lennon came close to putting the Lilywhites one up.
But it was that man Gareth Bale, in the same attack, who found the net first, side-stepping James Collins and burying the ball in to the bottom left from 20 yards after 13 minutes.

After a record 5-0 victory against Qpr on the first day of the season, can Swansea City maintain their high scoring escapades against visiting West Ham United on Saturday’s midday kick off?
Last season Swansea made a name for their style of play however goals were always lacking. A total of 44 goals scored all season was the fourth lowest in the league but with Michael Laudrup in charge things are about to change.
The unexpected goalfest at Loftus Road is a sign of things to come for Laudrup’s team. Striker Danny Graham failed to score in the five goal drubbing but has looked sharp in pre-season, new boy Michu has turned the heads of many with his two goals and Swansea’s pacey wingers are showing a keen eye for the back of the net too.
The Swans’ opposition for their first home game of the season is play-off promoted West Ham United.

Thanks to Arsenal slipping up yesterday, they would finish above The Gunners with two wins and above Newcastle United on goal difference if they were to win their two games also, and would not need to rely on Chelsea losing in Munich for fourth place to qualify.
Spurs take on Aston Villa at Villa Park this afternoon, who know that one win is all they need to survive for another season. Kick-off time is at 2pm and the match won’t be screened live anywhere in the UK.
After their off the field incident at a nightclub in the early hours of Tuesday morning, defender James Collins and midfielder Chris Herd will be disciplined by the club and there’s a big question...

Team news ahead of a vital clash for Aston Villa as they travel to the Hawthorns to face West Brom. Villa have suffered a horrible run of results under boss Alex McLeish, winning only 1 in their last 13 which has left them only three points ahead of the drop zone.
West Brom’s Marc-Antoine Fortune is fit to return and could lead the front line. The Baggies striker missed the terrific 1-0 away victory at Anfield last weekend with a hamstring injury. That game saw Paul Scharner cracking a wrist bone but he too looks to have recovered to play.
James Morrison (knee), Zoltan Gera (knee) and right-back Steven Reid (foot) remain unavailable on the injured list.
Aston Villa’s Richard Dunne may return to the defence having recovered from his broken collarbone injury that has kept him out for the past two and a half months.

Match preview ahead of Aston Villa vs Bolton Wanderers tonight in the Premier League. Kick-off time is at 7.45pm.
The very definition of a six pointer. Aston Villa currently sit five points above the relegation zone but should they lose to Bolton Alex McLeish’s team will only be three points above the Wanderers, having played a game more. What is more, their rivals for survival are all entering relative good periods of form. Wigan have picked up the scalps of Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool in recent weeks, Qpr have four in a row at home, Blackburn picked up a vital win and Bolton have games in hand on all those teams above them.
After this game Villa face a midlands derby at West Brom, host a struggling Tottenham that nevertheless is full of quality, and a final day trip to Norwich which could go either way. If Villa...

A cold day at Villa Park was in no way warmed by the football on show. Manchester City claimed the all important three points against Aston Villa thanks to a goal from Joleon Lescott, but it was ultimately a game that will be best forgotten by players and fans alike. An important win regardless though as it puts the Sky Blues back at the top of table. A terrible performance by the hosts though – they need to improve considerably and fast too if they want to stay clear from the drop zone.
Hardly a ‘must watch’ game by anyone’s standards – Manchester City haven’t looked as irresistible as they did in the first half of the season since, well, the first half of the season. That’s not to say Roberto Mancini’s men have been bad though, and City fans would undoubtedly be spurred on by the comfortable...

Following Saturday’s tumultuous affair at Old Trafford, Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini will no doubt be hoping his side can wrestle top spot in the Premier League back from their Manchester rivals with an away victory over Aston Villa.
With City lying one point behind leaders Manchester United, Mancini’s men have the chance to restore a two point cushion at the top of the division against an Aston Villa side that has struggled for form all season.
Alex McLeish’s side’s league position is far from impressive given the club were pushing for European places just a couple of season’s ago. The good news for the home team is that there is a seven point buffer between themselves and the relegation zone and their fans will be looking to move up the table rather than down it. An unlikely victory today would see them climb as high as 11th place.

Team News ahead of Sunday afternoon’s early Premier League tie between Newcastle United and Aston Villa that has a 1.30pm kick-off at St. James’s Park. The match will be screening live on Sky Sports.
The big question for Magpies boss Alan Pardew is whether or not he decides to start with new £10 million mega signing Papiss Cisse alongside leading scorer Demba Ba after their African Cup of Nations excursions. The Senegalese pair both returned to the North East on Thursday and should be fighting fit and raring to go but with the snowy weather bringing conditions Cisse might not be used to, will Pardew chuck him in for his first taste of Premier League football?
Most pre-match previews suggested Demba Ba would start the game alongside Leon Best with Cisse to come off the bench at around the hour mark.

There have been some notable problems thus far this season: there is still a vocal element of the crowd who are fundamentally opposed to Alex McLeish’s tenure as manager. For those fans, the club will stagnate under the former Birmingham City manager, as long as his tea continues to play anti-progressive, unexciting football, eeking out points where possible and without any sort of panache. The squad boasts a number of players unsuited to the cause, or if the papers are to be believed, unwilling to play for it.
The early days of the transfer window have already linked Villa with several deals, both incoming and outgoing, with young Irishman Enda Stevens having signed a pre-contract in the summer and now joining the cause from Shamrock Rovers and rumours linking Darren Bent with yet another move. Even if that doesn’t happen, with the always under-valued Emile Heskey confirmed injured for a month or so,...

Chelsea’s final match of 2012 sees them take on Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge in a game that has usually proven to be full of entertainment and served a hatful of goals. 24 times the back of the net has been smashed in their last four encounters on this ground resulting in a memorable 7-1 home thrashing of Villa and two high scoring draws (3-3 and 4-4) in recent years and we expect nothing less than a hard fought thriller today.
Both sides are in need of wins to jump up the table, though the Blues recent poor run of form has now made it a gigantic task if they are going to be genuine title contenders. Andre Villas-Boas, whose days may very well be numbered at the Bridge, has told fans that they are pretty much focusing on winning the Champions League now and making sure they actually are in...

Today’s match importance was put into the back of players, Welsh fans, and football fans in general’s minds after news broke of the unfortunate passing of Wales national team manager Gary Speed.
The resultant atmosphere at the Liberty could only be described as shocked and sadenned. The crowd passionately singing chants of “one Gary Speed, there’s only one Gary Speed” before kick off summed up their feelings aptly.
The events were respectably handled after a minutes silence was demonstrated with the utmost passion before kick off, some fans choosing to stay silent, some giving the Welshman applause and some parading him with the aforementioned chant. Either sentiment was done with utter respect. Suggestions were put forward to call the game off in Swansea, but the game took place as planned.

Harry Redknapp’s return to the dugout was a happy one as his side ran out comfortable 2-0 winners over a poor Aston Villa side and moved up to third in the table.
Two first- half goals from Emmanuel Adebayor were enough for the North London club in a match they dominated from start to finish.
Alex McLeish looked to have set up his side to contain Tottenham, naming five defenders in his starting eleven. Alan Hutton began on the right of midfield, presumably in an attempt to suppress Gareth Bale, but as Tottenham’s attacking players began to come to the fore Villa started to slip into a 5-4-1 formation with Gabriel Agbonlahor and Emile Heskey both playing much deeper roles than they are used to.
Redknapp named the same side for his third match in a row and on this performance you can see why.

With United and City on level points coming into this weekend and The Red Devils poised for a tricky tie at Anfield, Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini can’t help but think this could be the weekend they climb above their neighbours in the fight for the title and a real chance for him personally to show his muscles.
With Carlos (I only ever wanted to be loved) Tevez given a two week Asbo, Mancini now only has three sulky strikers to worry about, Edin Dzeko, Mario Balotelli and Sergio Aguero. A home tie against Aston Villa could prove to be a welcome distraction as he looks for a big performance amidst the gloom of the Tevez saga and the challenge to his authority. The City faithful will be hoping for a comfortable win with one eye on their crunch tie with Villareal in the week ahead.

Young referee Michael Oliver shaped an unsurprisingly tight affair that finished 1-1 thanks to a last gasp equaliser for Queen’s Park Rangers, courtesy of an own goal by Aston Villa defender Richard Dunne. Barry Bannan had put the visitors ahead by converting a penalty after a soft challenge by Armand Traore who was later dismissed. It was perhaps justice then, that 10 man Qpr managed to grind out a deserved point.
All that was missing from a near-perfect start to the season was a home win for newly revitalised Queen’s Park Rangers, who welcomed Aston Villa to Loftus Road – where the Hoops have yet to score a single goal this season. This unfortunate record looked likely to end sooner rather than later though as Qpr had been looking very impressive with Neil Warnock seeming able to gel his new look squad after some lavish but intelligent summer spending. Wolves spent the second 45 minutes of this game clinging on for dear life as Aston Villa threw everything they had at Mick McCarthy’s men, to no avail. In a game with relatively few on chances on target, it was the Villans who took the game by the scruff of the neck, testing Wayne Hennessey in the Wolves goal a few times, but nowhere near as much as Alex McLeish would have liked. Wanderers held on for a good point however, moving up to the top of the table in the process for the second time in two weeks.
It is testament to the erratic nature of the opening weeks of the Premier League that this derby, usually a mid table affair, was contested by two teams in the top four; Wolves and Aston Villa starting the game in 3rd and 4th place respectively.
The short journey for Mick McCarthy...

Why most mission statements are dumb -- and how to write one that isn't.
Here are four mission statements. Two are from real organizations. Two were created by Dilbert's Automatic Mission Statement Generator. Can you guess which ones are genuine?
1. It is our job to continually foster world-class infrastructures as well as to quickly create principle-centered sources to meet our customer's needs.
2. Our challenge is to assertively network economically sound methods of empowerment so that we may continually negotiate performance-based infrastructures.
3. To improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities.
4. Respect, integrity, communication, and excellence.
Mission statements are like corporate Hallmark cards. Often written in a bland cursive font and plastered conspicuously at headquarters, these aspiring epigrams are pretty words in Air Supply -- like rhythm. Sometimes they're created at a retreat in the woods, between the trust fall and the passing of the speaking stick.

Warner Bros. Pictures has bought James Collins' novel "Beginner's Greek" for Donald De Line (upcoming Green Lantern ) to produce, says Variety . The studio has hired (500) Days of Summer screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber to pen the adaptation. Warner Bros Pictures has acquired the big screen adaptation of James Collins' novel Beginner's Greek. I Love You Man, Observe and Report and Green Lantern producer Donald De Line has hired 500 Days of Summer screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber to pen the adaptation. If I had a list of new screenwriters to watch, Neustadter and Weber would definitely be on the top of the list. If you've seen 500 Days of Summer, than you know why these guys are getting so much buzz around Hollywood. Collins' novel, which was published last year, tells the story of an investment banker who meets his soul mate on a plane, loses her phone number, and later discovers that his best friend has married the woman. My first impression is that the premise sounds like a paint by numbers romantic comedy, but with Neustadter and Weber involved, I'm inclined to think there...

It seems Warner Brothers fell in love with 500 Days of Summer, too. The studio has acquired the rights to James Collins' novel "Beginner's Greek" for Donald De Line to produce and 500 Days of Summer screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber to adapt. The only other screenplay credit Scott and Michael have, sadly, is The Pink Panther 2, but it's great to see them getting some good gigs after all the 500 Days hype. "Beginner's Greek," published last year, centers on an investment banker who meets his soul mate on a plane, loses her phone number and discovers later that his best friend has married the woman. From Amazon: "James Collins's 'Beginner's Greek' is a tender tale of how love conquers all, even if it takes longer than some might be willing to wait. Chick Lit fans especially will appreciate the uniquely male perspective that Collins, who spent most...
