Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was the recent addition to one of the most beloved superhero series in recent times. Not only did it manage to maintain the hype of the first film, it also outdid it perfectly, not only setting up iconic characters for the next film but also telling an excellent story in a visually stunning manner.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Many would call the Spider-Verse series a perfect franchise and one of the biggest reasons for this is its directors and animators. It is quite a well-known fact in the film industry at this point that being a VFX artist is not easy. Marvel has gained a reputation for overworking these employees to an extreme degree and it would seem that they are not alone in this.

Batman Beyond successfully builds upon Batman: The Animated Series while standing on its own in the DC Animated Universe. The show moves into the future without losing its creative edge.
A still from Batman Beyond
But fans of the acclaimed animated series might be surprised to learn that the iconic villain, Mr. Freeze, almost had a very different depiction than the one showed in the series.
While the episode featuring Freeze, Heart of Ice, went on to win an Emmy for Outstanding Writing, the initial plan for the character in Batman Beyond could have deviated from that well-established legacy.
Batman Beyond‘s Mr. Freeze Arc Could Have Taken a Wrong Turn
According to the initial script of Batman Beyond, Terry McGinnis (the new Batman), would have stumbled upon a gruesome scene while grabbing a drink from the Batcave refrigerator: the severed head of Mr. Freeze.

No one loves Eli Manning as much as I do. Somewhere, I have a book on Manning inscribed, “To the only Giants fan who never booed Eli.” (Accurate.) There are the jerseys, cards, the autographs, the bobbleheads. I was at Eli’s first game, his retirement ceremony game, and so many in between. One time, I interviewed Manning while he was ostensibly promoting Frank’s RedHot Original sauce just so I could relive the glory days he never knew we shared. But I know a ripoff when I see one, and Hulu’s new series “Chad Powers” is a direct attempt to capitalize on the gigantic success of Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso.”
Before “Ted Lasso” was a show, Ted Lasso was a heightened fish-out-of-water original character created solely to promote a major media company’s sports brand. It was to be a one-and-done comedy skit. Before “Chad Powers” was a show,...

In case you didn’t know, animation directors are also auteurs. According to Yahoo Finance, the global animation market reached more than $400 billion at the end of 2023. That was up from $391 billion one year before. And yet, animated projects are not automatically covered by the WGA, are separate from the DGA, and are consistently overlooked for their filmmaking achievements.

“There’s that great old quote about Hollywood: ‘No one knows anything,’ ” says Kemp Powers. “Yet everyone acts like they know everything. I get particularly frustrated by some of these trends, because they selectively omit things that don’t validate their thesis,” admits Powers, one of the trio of directors behind Sony Pictures Animation sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which made $690.5 million at the worldwide box office. “There’s always a selective omission. Apparently no one wants to see any superhero movies, but Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 did pretty damn well, too, with superheroes.”

It’s peak resolution season and Youth Lagoon left the notion of ultimate failure in 2023. On “Football,” the latest single from Trevor Powers’ solo project, the musician rejects an all-or-nothing approach to success and insists that any effort must count for something.
“‘Football’ is really a celebration of failure,” Powers shared in a statement. “Society has a terrible habit of only recognizing achievement while glossing over the greatness in the shadows. We’re so distracted trying to earn love, worth and value that we forget it’s something we inherently already have.

The directors behind several of the animated films that are looking to make their mark on the upcoming Oscar race sat down with Gold Derby and dished about several topics including the piece of animation that first inspired them to work in the medium, their favorite animated project they’ve seen recently and what their ideal music would be to play if they won an award. This was all part of Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts panel on Film Animation that included Nick Bruno (“Nimona”), Kemp Powers (“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”), Aaron Horvath (“The Super Mario Bros. For Kemp Powers, coming on board to direct “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” (alongside Joaquim Dos Santos and Justin K. Thompson) was a daunting task, especially considering how he views the first movie as a masterpiece. “I think it would behoove me not to even try to follow that up but just try to do something completely different. We were trying to create our own standalone film. It felt like a better attitude to have going into it than a traditional sequel,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent Meet the Experts: Film Animation panel (watch the exclusive video interview above).

Wes Anderson recommends Warner Bros.’ early Barbara Stanwyck vehicle Baby Face, made in 1933 during pre-Production Code Hollywood, for top viewing as part of the November 2023 Turner Classic Movies lineup in the Asteroid City director’s own TCM Picks video that dropped on Wednesday.
The Hollywood studio made the infamous melodrama from director Alfred E. Green during the height of the Depression and before the official censors got their scissors into studio movies after Hollywood’s attempts at self-censorship, including with the Hays Code, failed to keep critics and the authorities at bay.
“There’s a period there where there’s nobody stopping them. Baby Face follows into that time, very, very strongly. It’s one of the most pre-code, pre-codes I can think of,” Anderson says of the breakout movie for a young Stanwyck.

For years, Keith Powers and Ryan Destiny were the ultimate couple goals. They first crossed paths at a Teen Vogue party in 2015 but initially played coy about their relationship. It wasn't until 2019 that they finally confirmed their romance in a WeTheUrban digital cover that July (via People). At the time, Powers opened up about his feelings on keeping his personal life to himself, explaining, "The more you keep private the happier you'll be. It's not easy being in a public relationship, so you try to keep as much as you can private. Control your own narrative, don't give people too much because they make up stuff from the outside looking in."
Destiny echoed similar sentiments, adding that making sure she's still seen as an individual is key for her. "We try to find a balance," she shared. "I'm already a private person and very career driven so reminding people that...

Thirteen-year-old Doc NYC, America’s largest documentary festival, has revealed its influential 15-film Short List. The festival will run its main lineup of 114 features and 129 short films in-person November 8-16 in New York City’s IFC Center, Sva Theatre and Village East by Angelika and continue online until November 26 with films available to viewers across the U.S. All the films will have theatrical screenings at the festival, often with the directors in person.
Historically, most of the Doc NYC shortlist titles overlap with the Academy’s official 15-film Oscar Shortlist. With the notable exception of Netflix’s Oscar-winning “My Octopus Teacher,” for 11 years the festival has screened the documentary that went on to win the Academy Award, including “Navalny,” “Summer of Soul,” “American Factory,” “Free Solo,” “Icarus,” “O.J.: Made in America,” “Amy,” “Citizenfour,” “20 Feet From Stardom,” “Searching for Sugar Man,” and “Undefeated.” The festival has also screened 49 of the last 55 Oscar-nominated documentary features.

Actor Mark-Paul Gosselaar was a teen heartthrob on the NBC sitcom Saved by the Bell. While it’s been more than a few years since Gosselaar’s day on the show, the character still follows him around today. In recent years, Gosselaar has spoken out about some of the regrets he still harbors regarding some of the show’s more questionable scenes.
Despite his reservations, Gosselaar should show himself a little grace, as should his fans, given that he was just 15 years old when the first episode of Saved by the Bell aired. Here’s a look at the ’90s teen sitcom and Gosselaar’s love-hate relationship with some of the show’s storylines.

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…,” Charles Dickens wrote in A Tale of Two Cities. The same phrase could describe the state of the documentary industry.
More independent documentary films and series of exceptional quality are being made than ever before, yet there is an existential dilemma facing the field: how to get that remarkable work to viewers. Distribution opportunities have dried up in the past year – buyers aren’t buying, at least at the pace they used to – provoking deep anxiety among nonfiction filmmakers.
We dig into these vital concerns with Thom Powers, documentary programmer at the Toronto Film Festival, in Episode 2 of Doc Talk. The ongoing actors and writers strikes have caused the TV academy to postpone the Primetime Emmy Awards from September. Speculation about a new date is just that. While there are rumors of rescheduling in either November or January, nothing can be firmed up until the two guilds reach an agreement with the powers-that-be. To date, there have not been any negotiations between the parties. The WGA walked on May 2 while SAG-AFTRA hit the picket lines on July 14 (two days after the Emmy nominations were announced).
The primetime ceremony had been set to take place on September 18 and air live coast-to-coast on Fox. The Creative Arts section of the Emmys were to be handed out at two non-televised events on September 9 and 10. Despite the uncertainty about new dates for these awardsfests, the final round of Emmy voting will still kick off on August 17. This second phase of the process will run for 12 days until Aug.

The Toronto International Film Festival announced its lineup of documentaries this morning, a slate that includes the world premiere of a film on uncancelled comedian Louis C.K., as well as fresh work from nonfiction greats Raoul Peck, Frederick Wiseman, Errol Morris, Lucy Walker, and Roger Ross Williams.
Sorry/Not Sorry, directed by Caroline Suh and Cara Mones, foregrounds women comedians who accused Louis C.K. of sexual harassment and the consequences they faced as a result. C.K. admitted in 2017 that he had exposed himself and masturbated in front of several women, which appeared to cancel his thriving standup and acting career. But after a pause he resumed standup performances before sold out crowds.
Louis C.K.
“It’s a really nuanced telling of the story produced by the New York Times,” TIFF chief documentary programmer Thom Powers told Deadline. “It’s been six years since the original New York Times reporting on this case.

This year, non-fiction titles will be front and center at the Toronto International Film Festival, as many writers and actors will not be on hand due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
Opening night at the 2023 festival brings a documentary world premiere, Rachel Ramsay and James Erskine’s “Copa 71” (seller: Dogwoof), about an historic international women’s soccer tournament lost to sports history. The filmmakers bring us back to the record-setting crowds assembled in Mexico City in 1971. U.S. soccer star Alice Morgan and athletes Venus and Serena Williams are among the film’s executive producers.
That’s the sort of unexpected story that veteran TIFF documentary programmer Thom Powers sought for this year’s documentary program of 22 titles from 12 countries. While it’s always painful to whittle down the selection from 800 feature submissions (the post-pandemic production boom continues), Powers looked at giving a boost to sales titles...

Following up "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse," considered by many to be the best superhero movie ever made, was never going to be easy. In a sea of bland superhero offerings, 2018's "Into the Spider-Verse" not only managed to stand out as a truly original take on the genre but redefined how studios approached animation going forward.
Now, the dazzling sequel "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" has arrived and somehow managed to outdo the original, plunging audiences into a multiverse of animated worlds that feel more vibrant and imaginative than anything the MCU has given us for a long, long time. Perhaps ever. In late 2018, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” quietly debuted. It featured a different version of the Spider-Man character, Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), a New York City whiz kid whose Spider-Man died tragically, forcing him to step into the iconic role (with some help from some other Spider-People from different dimensions). And it was rendered in an aggressively comic book-y style – this style was unlike anything that audiences had seen before and effectively bumped out the parameters of what we think of as Western animation.
It took chances in both the medium and the message. It made an impressive $384 million worldwide against a budget of $90 million. And it was awarded an Oscar for Best Animated Feature a few months later, marking the first non-Disney or Pixar movie that had been honored since Gore Verbinski’s “Rango.”

For as hard as we film journalists can be on certain movies, it's honestly kind of a miracle when any live-action feature film ever gets finished. Even a movie as simple in its design as the recent sci-fi indie flick "The Artifice Girl" -- most of which centers on a small group of people talking in a cramped, dimly-lit room -- represents the handiwork of many, many different artists working behind the scenes. That goes doubly for animated movies, not least of all ones that push the envelope to the degree that "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" does.
"Across the Spider-Verse" is, of course, the much-anticipated sequel to 2018's "Into the Spider-Verse." The complexity of “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” became evident even prior to the completion of its ground-breaking, Oscar-winning predecessor, “Into the Spider-Verse,” so producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller recruited three new directors, who eagerly asked to join the franchise: Joaquim Dos Santos (“The Legend of Korra”), Kemp Powers (“Soul” co-director and “One Night in Miami” Oscar-nominated screenwriter), and Justin K. Thompson (“Into the Spider-Verse” production designer). The producers called them their “band of musicians,” with each contributing his own creative specialty in helping Miles Morales forge his own Spidey path in this epic sequel.

Five years after Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse become a box office and cultural hit, en route to winning an Oscar, the second film in the planned trilogy premiered in Los Angeles on Tuesday and its writers are feeling — tired.
“It feels great and we are totally exhausted,” said Chris Miller, who along with partner Phil Lord were putting the finishing touches on Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse until just a few weeks ago. “We might still be working on it, there’s still home video,” joked Lord.
The sequel follows Miles Morales as he is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters the Spider Society, a team of Spider-People charged with protecting the multiverse’s existence.
But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must set out on his own to save those he loves most.

Every year, the Cannes Film Festival program yields its riches. And every year, documentaries are kept to the selection sidebars, with the exception of just three over the years, two of which won the Palme d’Or: “The Silent World,” co-directed by Jacques Cousteau and Louis Malle in 1956, and Michael Moore’s “Fahrenheit 9/11” in 2004.
This year, out of 16 documentaries in the Official Selection, two are in the Competition, the first time nonfiction titles have joined that storied roster since Moore’s inclusion.
This is progress, but a quick glance at the latest Palme d’Or predictions reveals that Wang Bing’s “Youth” (marking the first 3.5-hours of an eventual 10-hour triptych) and “Olfa’s Daughters” from Kaouther Ben Hania are not high on the list of likely winners. Both are recognized by critics as boundary-pushing examples of the form but seem unlikely to become consensus award picks from Ruben Östlund’s eclectic Competition jury.

Sony spun a golden web in 2018 with the smash-hit animated Marvel film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and this summer’s sequel is set to up the ante with another visually groundbreaking Miles Morales adventure.
In Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Miles is flung into a wild multiverse where he meets a team of Spider-People who protect it. They’re called the Spider Society, and they’re led by a Spider-Man from the year 2099 called Miguel O’Hara (voiced by Oscar Isaac). While it might sound like a recipe for a wholesome team-up, Miles soon finds himself at odds with the Society in the midst of some multiversal chaos.
“Philosophically speaking, Miles holds our multiverse together,” director Kemp Powers tells Den of Geek. “He’s so different from the other Spider-People because he’s not so alone. He’s close to his friends and family and never hides anything from them.

Sony Pictures Animation previewed a still unfinished 14 minutes of the eagerly anticipated Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the sequel to best animated feature Oscar winner Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, on Monday at CinemaCon.
“In 2018 we delivered the most creatively ambitious movie I’ve ever been a part of,” said Spa president Kristine Belson. “We are deeply proud of the sequel.”
The movie again follows Marvel’s Miles Morales/Spider-Man, voiced by Shameik Moore, and Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman, voiced by Hailee Steinfeld, set across the multiverse of Spider-People. At CinemaCon, the pair were joined by new voice castmember Issa Rae (Jessica Drew) and Kemp Powers, one of the film’s trio of directors, to introduce the film.

The makers of upcoming animated sequel "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" understand the myriad Spider-Men that have appeared in the character's history, and out of the 240 character models created for the film, many are Spider-People. With each new trailer, Spider-Fans have been keeping their eyes peeled, looking for the parallel Spider-Man they like best.
Most Spider-Fans will likely shake their heads in dismay, however, when you bring up the infamous Clone Saga. In mid-1990s Spider-Man comics, it was revealed that a supervillain called the Jackal had cloned Spider-Man in an effort to, I dunno, sow discord. One of the clones, going by the name Ben Reilly, continued to fight crime as a hero called the Scarlet Spider, a fellow who sported a ripped hoodie.
Natch: It would eventually be revealed that there was a mix-up, and Ben Reilly was actually the original Peter Parker. For a spell, Ben Reilly was the "main" Spider-Man.

Sony dropped the second trailer for its upcoming Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse on Wednesday night and it features a more detailed look at the “elite crew with all the best Spider-people.”
The nearly three-minute trailer begins with Miles Morales/Spider-Man’s encounter with the multiverse traversing The Spot. It also sees Gwen Stacy introducing Miles to a whole host of new Spider-people at a building, that gives off a Citadel of Ricks vibe.
We also get a prolonged look at Oscar Isaac’s Miguel O’Hara/Spider-Man 2099 who challenges Miles’ sense of morality and ethics. And with the seemingly infinite number of Spider-people, the filmmakers couldn’t resist dropping in the Spider-Man pointing meme.
The sequel’s returning voice cast includes Shameik Moore as Morales, Hailee Steinfeld as Stacy/Spider-Gwen, Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker, Luna Lauren Velez as Rio Morales and Brian Tyree Henry as Jefferson Davis. Additionally,...

When a lonely drifter arrives at an isolated farm looking for work and a place to stay he finds himself battling the cerebral takeover of otherworldly visions. Marking his third appearance on Dn, Eli Powers’ rural horror Skin & Bone is a menacing horror about the ongoing presence of the past. The film’s two leads, and real-life partners, Thomas Sadoski and Amanda Seyfried bring great depth to the characters of Christian and Serene as they confront one another as two lonely individuals both with their own personal baggage. Powers’ short excels in its darkest moments where Christian’s visions see him coming face to face with the farm’s animals in encounters rife with Lynchian unease. Following Skin & Bone’s successful arrival online, Dn joined Powers for a conversation about the making of his short, covering everything from his history as a genre filmmaker to his vision for the feature version of his unsettling tale.

Oscar winner and Academy member Roger Ross Williams is saying publicly what many in the documentary community have stewed over privately – that the sums of money being spent on Oscar documentary campaigns has “gotten insane.” And Williams, a former Academy Governor representing the Doc Branch, says something may be done about it.
“We in the Academy, in the Doc Branch, have a campaign finance reform committee… to sort of try to work through that and figure out solutions to that. It’s gotten insane. It’s gazillions of dollars to get seen and heard,” he said, “and that’s so troubling because it should be on the merit of the films.”

When Cph:dox shifted from a fall festival to a spring-based fest in 2017, it got out of IDFA’s shadow and grew into one of the most influential documentary events of the year.
“It made a big jump in prominence when it moved to March because it fit into the calendar in a more exciting way for a lot of documentary stakeholders,” Thom Powers, lead documentary programmer for Toronto Film Festival, says. “It became a great place for films coming out of Sundance to have a European launch. It’s also become a very significant place for films to make world premieres near the beginning of the year, which can then send them on a circuit, traveling to other festivals like Hot Docs or Doc NYC.”

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a visual marvel, but it sounds like the upcoming sequel will be pushing those visuals to the extreme. In fact, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse co-director Joaquim Dos Santos told Empire that the movie includes so many visually-distinct worlds that they’ve “essentially made five films in one.“
In addition to the universe of Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will include Gwen’s (Hailee Steinfeld) Earth-65, Miguel O’Hara’s (Oscar Isaac) Nueva York, Spider-Punk’s (Daniel Kaluuya) New London, the India-inspired Mumbattan, and a fifth dimension which is being kept under wraps. “It goes hard,” said writer/producer Phil Lord. “The visuals will be jaw-dropping.” You can check out an image from the Mumbattan universe courtesy of Empire below.
“The first film was about bringing characters into Miles’ dimension,” explained writer/producer Christopher Miller. “This is about Miles heading off into others.

Much like the Super-Collider at the center of its multiverse plot, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” opened a rift that continues to impact the world around it. Its influence can still be felt across the film industry, from “The Mitchells vs. The Machines” and “The Bad Guys” to the new “Puss in Boots” blending CG animation with illustrated looks — showing not only what superhero movies could do better, but how Hollywood animation as a whole could improve.
For the sequel to the Oscar winner, the filmmakers are not just resting on their laurels, but doubling down on the innovation of “Into the Spider-Verse.” This means inventing new tools for animation and challenging the characters with emotional stories. But arguably the biggest innovation is the way “Across the Spider-Verse” challenges the superhero film industrial complex and its treatment of comic book artists, by making them a part of the film’s development.

The documentary universe has changed radically over the past dozen years. No longer the domain of a few cable channels or public television stations, no longer bound by the old cinema verite rules of engagement, non-fiction filmmaking has spent the past decade bursting out of the low-budget indie sidelines into mainstream acceptance, adopting tricks and tropes from fiction and series storytelling as directors capture audience attention from all over the world.
One force for change throughout has been the Cinema Eye Honors, an awards body created in 2007 by a group of independent filmmakers. Led by Los Angeles documentary filmmaker A.J. Schnack (“Kurt Cobain About a Son” and the recent “30 for 30” entry “Long Gone Summer”), the Cinema Eye Honors have led the charge in shaking up conversations about the types of non-fiction storytelling that were worthy of celebration.
