In the weeks leading up to Election Day, Mandela Barnes’ supporters felt frustrated. They believed in Barnes as the best Democrat to take on Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wisc.), and election forecasts all but guaranteed a Johnson victory. That frustration gave way to fury, however, once the ballots were counted on Wednesday. Barnes lost to Johnson by a single point.
It was a performance far stronger than what former Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wisc.) achieved in his back-to-back runs against Johnson in 2010 and 2016. It also shouldn’t have been a shock. “This...

Ron Johnson once said climate change is caused by sunspots. He said Covid could be treated by gargling mouthwash. He asserted the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol had been instigated by “fake Trump supporters,” even as the two-term Senate Republican reportedly tried to supply Vice President Mike Pence with a slate of fake electors to overturn the will of Wisconsin voters during the 2020 presidential election.
Wisconsin voters didn’t mind so much — or at least an ever-so-slight majority of them didn’t. Johnson narrowly defeated Democrat Mandela Barnes, with the...

Oshkosh, Wis. — As state assembly candidate Lori Palmeri knocked on the doors of old Victorians here last Sunday, Ben Wikler stood beside her and watched. There wasn’t much to see, at least to the casual observer: At each stop, Palmeri recited what’s known as a “mobilization” script, a brief exchange with likely Democratic voters to ensure they have a plan to cast their ballots.
But to Wikler, chair of Wisconsin’s Democratic Party, there was much to glean. How was Palmeri presenting to voters? What was her energy like?...

Cast members from Veep and The West Wing reunited for a virtual fundraiser for the Wisconsin Democratic Party on Sunday, an event that was a mix of amusing memories, their own brushes with fame and warnings about what was at stake in the upcoming midterms.
During the event, actors re-enacted an abortion-themed scenes from each of their shows. They also played a quiz in which contestants had to guess if lines came from Veep, The West Wing or the real world, with an eye toward highlight some of the statements made by Sen. Ron Johnson (R-wi). Democrats see a pickup opportunity with their candidate, Mandela Barnes.
By the end of the two-hour event, about 686,000 had been raised.
“I’m doing this because I am a concerned citizen. I am a patriot. And I believe that democracy is, without hyperbole, is on the line right now, and I know that Wisconsin is a pivotal state,...

The following two statements stand in complete opposition to each other, and yet they are both true: The Democratic Party is dominant. The Democratic Party is screwed.
Consider these facts. In 2020, Joe Biden received more votes than any other presidential candidate in U.S. history. He rebuilt the “blue wall” of Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin; turned Georgia blue for the first time since 1992; and clinched Arizona thanks to a commanding performance in the state’s most populous county, Maricopa, which no Democrat had carried since Harry Truman in 1948. When the Wisconsin Democratic Party announced a cast reunion of Happy Days for this Sunday, all to raise money for the final sprint until election day, one member was noticeably absent: Scott Baio.
The Donald Trump supporter wrote on Twitter that the show was being used as a “political pawn.”
The result, though, was more attention for event, which in fundraising circles is just what is wanted in the final weeks of a presidential campaign, a time when donors are inundated with online appeals.
The last few weeks have seen a flood of reunion events, of casts of old TV shows and cult hit movies, giving a retro, Back to the Future feel to the political money race.
Just this coming weekend saw cast members from Seinfeld get back together for a Texas Democratic Party event on Friday, a Wet Hot American Summer get together for Joe Biden’s campaign...

As a member of the Marvel Universe, Natalie Portman knows a thing or two about supervillains — and she recognizes those qualities in a very famous former classmate from Harvard.
The Oscar winner and Thor actress, 37, got candid about her relationship with her former friend and fellow Harvard alum Jared Kushner on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
“Unfortunately it’s not very — there’s not a lot funny to say about someone you were friends with becoming a supervillain. So, it’s not funny,” she said.
