During a recent Gold Derby video interview, senior editor Matt Noble spoke in-depth with Jeff Bridges (“The Old Man”) about Season 1 of his FX action drama, which is eligible at the 2023 Emmys. Watch the full video above and read the complete interview transcript below.
The actor plays former CIA agent and fugitive Dan Chase, who after going Awol for the past several decades is now on the run from the FBI and an old friend, Harold Harper (John Lithgow). “The Old Man” features a pair of performances from two septuagenarian performers that make this FX series pretty close to perfect. The show follows Oscar-winner Jeff Bridges as a retired CIA agent (Dan Chase) who is forced into hiding after he kills an intruder who breaks into his house. The hunt for Chase is overseen by none other than John Lithgow, who plays Harold Harper — FBI Assistant Director for Counterintelligence. As Harper, Lithgow uses his intelligence as a performer to paint a picture of a world-weary man who makes his trades with secrets and feels the weight of that after so many years. Lithgow is an actor who brings weight and wit to any role, and critics agree that this is another fine turn from the thespian.
Nick Schager (The Daily Beast) explained: “Bridges and Lithgow seize every available opportunity to imbue their archetypal characters with a world-weariness that’s...

Jeff Bridges came roaring back to our screens this year with perhaps his finest-ever TV performance in the FX drama “The Old Man.”
The series follows Bridges as retired CIA agent Dan Chase, who is forced to go on the run and into hiding after killing an intruder who broke into his home. He is hunted down by John Lithgow‘s Harold Harper, the FBI’s Assistant Director for Counterintelligence. Bridges and Lithgow, two veterans of both the small and big screens, excel here in performances that prove why they deserve their status as two greats of acting.
It is no surprise that Bridges is commanding in his role as Dan Chase. He’s an actor who always demands your attention on-screen and here is no different, whether muttering gruff dialogue or tussling as an aging man with a younger enemy. Bridges imbues Dan with weight, gravitas, a world-weary intelligence,...

FX is back.
Following years of success via its auteur-driven comedies, the network that brought us “Damages,” “Justified” and “The Americans” finally has a new drama series reminiscent of the Emmy-winning shows that once anchored its lineup. “The Old Man,” which premiered last June, follows Dan Chase (Jeff Bridges), a dangerous and mysterious man who years ago fled the CIA for reasons unknown. Forced out of hiding after an assassin tracks him down decades later, he finds himself on the run from John Lithgow’s Harold Harper, a one-time compatriot who is now the FBI’s Assistant Director for Counterintelligence. The result is a thrilling series about two aging men whose relationship spans decades and defies explanation. And it could land at least one of its stars an Emmy nomination more than a year after its debut.

Two decades after he initially became a Screen Actors Guild Award nominee and 13 years after he won Best Film Actor for “Crazy Heart,” Jeff Bridges has received his first television acting notice from the organization. This Best TV Drama Actor recognition comes for his work on FX’s “The Old Man,” which constitutes the first regular small screen role of his 65-year career. If he succeeds on this bid, he will be only the sixth man to win individual SAG Awards for both film and TV performances.
Aside from his win, Bridges’ SAG Awards resume consists of four film nominations for “The Contender” (supporting), “Seabiscuit” (ensemble), “True Grit” (lead) and “Hell or High Water” (supporting). His challengers in this year’s TV drama actor contest are all, unlike him, also nominated in the corresponding ensemble category. John Lithgow (‘The Old Man’): ‘The operative word in acting is surprise’ [Exclusive Video Interview]

At first it’s hard to believe The Old Man could be a spy thriller. The Disney+ series opens with mighty Jeff Bridges groaning to put on socks. His elderly but Awol CIA agent – the too aptly named Dan Chase – makes doctor’s appointments to discuss ailments he doesn’t even have. “When I was a little girl, you were a king,” his daughter tells him, seemingly testing out lines for dad’s eulogy.
Soon, though, the diminished king’s past catches up with him, forcing a return to imperial form. Turns out it’s like riding a bike. By the end of the first hour, Dan’s polishing off the upstarts sent to apprehend him with the kind of lethal timing that belongs in a Bond film. When one foe spits, “F*** you, old man,” at the end of a drag-out fistfight, Dan has his dogs – who must have...

Editor’s Note: This story contains spoilers through Episode 6 of “The Old Man.”
Lymphoma was one thing. When Jeff Bridges, 72, learned the cancer diagnosis, he had shot almost four and a half episodes out of a planned ten of “The Old Man” (FX). It was the “Crazy Heart” Oscar-winner’s first starring role in a TV series. He had jumped on board the show from uber-producer Warren Littlefield right off the pilot. And then the pandemic hit.
“The world fell apart,” said showrunner Jonathan Steinberg on Zoom, tracing the rollercoaster course of the series leading up to the July 21 cliffhanger Episode 7 finale. “And then the writers and the world were coming back together again. But while we were making it Jeff got sick.”
Littlefield had first called showrunner Steinberg back in 2017 when he landed the rights to Thomas Perry’s new thriller about an ex-Afghanistan CIA operative who is unearthed...

While The Old Man Season 1 finale has yet to air — it’s broadcast July 21 at 10/9c on FX — we already know there is going to be a second season. The renewal came soon after the series starring Jeff Bridges, John Lithgow, and Amy Brenneman premiered on June 16 (and was the most-watched FX series debut on Hulu — it streams the next day — in its opening weekend). The series is based on Thomas Perry’s novel of the same name and follows Bridges’ Dan Chase, who has been living off the grid since leaving the CIA decades ago. He’s flushed out of hiding when an assassin comes after him. The FBI’s Assistant Director for Counterintelligence Harold Harper (Lithgow) — working with his protégé (and Chase’s secret daughter) Angela Adams (Alia Shawkat) and CIA Special Agent Raymond Waters (E.J. Bonilla) — is called on to hunt Chase down because of their complicated past.

(Warning: Spoilers for “The Old Man” Episode 3)
Through two episodes, FX’s “The Old Man” has made it a point to highlight how crucial the relationship is between lead character Dan Chase (Jeff Bridges) and his daughter, Emily. Dan’s refusal to relinquish that relationship, as Harold Harper (Jon Lithgow) instructed in the first episode, is the entire catalyst behind his current predicament — you know, the whole being hunted by the FBI thing. Yet it was curious that audiences have only been given Emily’s perspective through phone calls from her father’s point of view through the first two episodes.
As it turns out, there was good reason for that. Tonight’s “critically important” reveal that Emily and Harold’s mentee, agent Angela Adams (played brilliantly by Alia Shawkat), are actually one in the same encapsulates the major themes of the series, according to the creatives behind it. Even...

Co-creator Jon Steinberg and executive producer Warren Littlefield don’t much care if you like the characters that populate “The Old Man,” FX’s new espionage thriller premiering Thursday, June 16. Well, that’s not entirely fair. They want audiences to find them compelling and for viewers to invest in their textured lives and the increasingly interwoven web of high-stakes political games they’re playing. But above all, Steinberg and Littlefield want viewers to question each and every major player as “The Old Man” is hell bent on steering clear of traditional hero and villain archetypes.
The new drama, starring Jeff Bridges as the titular old man, revolves around Dan Chase, who absconded from the CIA decades ago and now lives off the grid. When an assassin arrives to eliminate Chase after all these quiet years, the older operative learns that to ensure his future he now must reconcile his past.

A compelling but uneven game of cat and mouse unfolds in “The Old Man,” Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine’s adaptation of the Thomas Perry novel of the same name. At the center are two former CIA agents, Dan Chase (Jeff Bridges) and Harold Harper (John Lithgow), who take turns as the hunter and quarry, as well as the “old man” of the title.
But while the FX drama deals in such dichotomies—predator and prey, hero and villain—it’s much more ambiguous about morality than its source material. “The Old Man” reminds us (and then reminds us some more) that being the hero of a story is often a matter of perspective; sometimes, it’s simply a matter of time.

The title of FX’s The Old Man doesn’t really tell you what kind of show it is. It could be a wacky multicamera sitcom about an ill-behaving senior citizen who gets kicked out of his retirement home and has to move in with his hipster grandson. It could be a whimsical dramedy about a retiree figuring out how to fill his days. Or it could be what it actually is: a thriller starring Jeff Bridges as a renegade former CIA operative who has to kill a lot of...

Jeff Bridges is back in action after a life-threatening battle with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and Covid-19. At the Wednesday night premiere of his FX thriller “The Old Man”, the Oscar winner described the surreal experience of returning to set after a year-long hiatus due to his health struggles.
“I was sick for a year and then came back to work with all the same cast and crew, and it was like I had a bizarre dream or something,” Bridges told reporters on the red carpet at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles.
Filming for the TV adaptation of Thomas Perry‘s 2017 novel was initially shut down in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. After production resumed later in the fall with three episodes left to shoot, it was once again halted when Bridges was diagnosed with cancer and left to seek treatment.

Dan Chase, the protagonist of FX’s new drama The Old Man, is on the run. He’s being chased — see what they did there? — by several agencies of the American government, at least one deadly contractor and international adversaries. He’s a clever man, but his primary antagonist is time — a past catching up to him and a future becoming more finite.
It’s a part made for Jeff Bridges, one of those actors who was born for and into Hollywood stardom and who has grown gracefully from golden boy to sage septuagenarian on movie screens nationwide. As if the star’s gravitas weren’t enough, it’s almost impossible to watch The Old Man without thinking about the show’s delays for both the Covid pandemic and Bridges’ cancer — without considering time.
As a thriller, The Old Man doesn’t always deliver.

Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow are two of our greatest living actors, so it’s exciting to see them paired up as the stars of the new FX thriller The Old Man (debuting Thursday, June 16 at 10/9c). In fact, the promise of Bridges and Lithgow sharing the screen is almost enough on its own to sell this… almost. But after seeing the first four episodes, I’m not completely sold. The Old Man hits all the beats of a standard spy thriller and delivers some bone-crunching action, but the personal stuff falls flat. It strikes a meditative tone, without giving us much to meditate on.

One last game. One last heist. One last job. Film and TV are chock full of swan songs, many of which serve to resurrect retired characters or spotlight actors beloved by retirees. “The Old Man,” starring Jeff Bridges as an ex-CIA operative brought out of hiding, sits firmly in the latter camp and doesn’t overexert itself trying to separate from the pack. Instead, Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine’s adaptation of Thomas Perry’s 2017 novel relies on familiarity to craft a serviceable drama with above-average action scenes. Bridges, who also executive produces, is front and center, dragging himself out of bed to pee every few hours yet still resourceful enough to put young whipper-snappers in their place. If his grizzled appeal isn’t enough for you — and odds are, it will be for many — the cast is stacked with talent, from a generous adversary in John Lithgow...

Jeff Bridges revealed to People magazine that he was “pretty close to dying” after contracting Covid while on chemotherapy for cancer. The Oscar winner announced in October 2020 that he was diagnosed with lymphoma. Bridges told People that he had “a 12-by-9-inch tumor” in his body. “It was like a child in my body. It didn’t hurt or anything,” the actor said.
To fight the cancer, Bridges almost immediately started chemotherapy by infusion and then later oral chemotherapy. The chemo proved successful prior to the Covid diagnosis.
“They got a cocktail that worked, and oh man it worked fast,” Bridges said. “That thing just imploded,”
Bridges’ health nosedived in January 2021 when he contracted Covid. Because his chemotherapy treatments had severely weakened his immune system, Bridges body had no line of defense against the coronavirus.
“I had no defenses. That’s what chemo does — it strips you of all your immune system.
