The movie tells the story of a young boy who commits a noble murder and is forced to run away from his rural hometown, leaving behind his best friend. The deal was negotiated between Peter Jarowey and Josh Spector at Vertical with CAA Media Finance on behalf of the filmmakers.

It’s hard to believe that there are not one, but two different live-action “Phantom” projects currently in the works. The Sci-Fi Network’s adaptation of “The Phantom” is chugging along quite well with publicized casting announcements and concept illustrations — but what of “The Phantom Legacy,” the film version produced by Sherlock Symington Productions?
“‘The Phantom’ is still at scripting stage,” screenwriter Tim Boyle told Moviehole. “Although the comic studio and executive producers have given it two thumbs up, we’re constantly pushing the screenplay forward. I believe the film will go into pre-production by the end of the year.”
Boyle also went on to address a report that Sam Worthington would portray the purple-clad hero, just one of the many superhero rumors the “Terminator Salvation” star has been linked to. While Worthington is a friend, Boyle said that the actor’s involvement is purely speculative at this point.

Canada's Movie Central and The Movie Network today announced that they have given the greenlight to a four-hour mini-series adaptation of the long-running superhero 'The Phantom'. The series will be a co-production with Sci Fi Channel (soon to be renamed Syfy). It will debut on Movie Central and The Movie Network in spring 2010.
The Phantom was created by Lee Falk and first appeared in 1936 as a newspaper strip. Since then a character with that name has appeared in comic books by numerous publishers throughout the world. The Phantom has also starred in animated and live-action screen adaptations. The latter include a 1940s movie serial, a 1996 theatrical film and a 1961 TV pilot. Another feature film adaptation, The Phantom: Legacy, is also in the works. Speaking to Moviehole, screenwriter Tim Boyle said that the movie is still at the scripting stage and he believes it will go into pre-production...

Australia loves The Phantom, so when news broke over the weekend that the comic strip legend was returning to the silver screen, the local media began covering it in earnest.
Tim Boyle told the Courier Mail that he would love to direct The Phantom Legacy which he is writing. The writer/director most recently saw his The Plex released internationally. He has worked with far smaller budgets than the $87 million producer Bruce Sherlock estimated the film will require.
Boyle says he’s up to the challenge and envisions Sam Worthington as ideal for the Ghost Who Walks. Worthington will next be seen in Terminator Salvation next May. Worthington also appeared in Boyle’s Fink so they are familiar with one another.
The writer has moved to Los Angeles for three months to work with Sherlock on locking down pre-production details from distribution to casting. A director choice is expected in January.

Little-known Australian actor Sam Worthington is the hot favourite to land the coveted role of the Phantom in the forthcoming comic book movie adaptation - after winning a vote of confidence from the film's screen writer.
Fellow Aussie Tim Boyle has been handed the job of taking the superhero to the big screen in The Ghost Who Walks - and he is keen to cast as much homegrown talent as possible.
Boyle worked with Worthington on low budget action movie Fink and is keen for the pair to reunite.
According to Moviehole.net, the two have yet to discuss the role - and Boyle has yet to learn from studio chiefs if he will also be allowed to direct the movie.
Worthington, 32, will next be seen in director McG's Christian Bale-starring Terminator: Salvation.

An Australian company named Sherlock Symington Productions has won the rights to The Phantom Legacy, a reboot of the superhero franchise.
The latest adaptation will cost the company roughly $87 million, so they aren’t taking the redo lightly. That is a huge gamble, mate. The first try in 1996 only made $17 million domestic. The bald Billy Zane starred at the peak of his career alongside Catherine Zeta-Jones as the sassy love interest. How can you top that?
“It has the makings of a blockbuster,” producer Bruce Sherlock told The Associated Press of the reboot. “There’s some surprises that will thrill the Phantom fans worldwide.” I’m sure those five people are on the edge of their seats…
Tim Boyle, the writer behind The Phantom Legacy, recently posted a few updates on his MySpace blog. He first clarified the new movie will not be a sequel of any kind, but an entirely new “re-launch.

Sydney-based Sherlock Symington Productions has secured the rights to “The Phantom Legacy”, a $130 million blockbuster effort that they say will bring a spotlight focus onto the Australian industry. There have been two previous attempts at bringing The Phantom to life, such as the 1943 movie serials starring Tom Tyler, and the more well-known film released in 1996 starring Billy Zane, which met with mixed critical reactions. Tim Boyle has been tapped to write and possibly direct the film, and he says that he intends to focus the story on the father/son dynamic of “The Phantom” and will not be connected to the 1996 version, hoping to bring their own take to [...]...

No, thanks, I'm good. Really, keep all that Phantom for yourself.

Nope. Still don't need a Phantom movie. Unfortunately, we're going to get one. At first it was thought that it would be a sequel of the 1996 gold medal winner for awfulness, but according to Australian writer-director Tim Boyle, it's going to be a reboot, so just forget the first movie ever happened. If you can.
On his MySpace page, Boyle corrects comments from the reports of multiple websites earlier in the week claiming that something called The Phantom Legacy was on the horizon.

The latest reincarnation of the famous The Phantom comic book series will be shot entirely in Australia and will hopefully bring with it some of the cache achieved by recent comic book adaptation blockbusters such as The Dark Knight and Iron Man. The Phantom Legacy will relaunch The Ghost Who Walks on the big screen, 13 years after Billy Zane portrayed the hero in The Phantom, which was shot in Australia as well. The new film will bring a $130 million production to these shores; courtesy of Sydney based Sherlock Symington Productions. The movie will be penned by Australian writer/director Tim Boyle, whose modest independent feature film The Plex opened earlier this year in Australian cinemas.

Dark Horizons has some pretty good quotes from Tim Boyle, the director of the upcoming Phantom franchise reboot. In it, Boyle makes it vividly clear that Phantom will Not be a sequel to the Simon Wincer-helmed 1996 stinker of the same name. There will be two main villains this go around - an original from the comic itself, and a totally new personality to be determined during script writing. The tone is described as “real world gritty” and is set both in and out of the jungle. “It will have some elements of the original comic, but we are making it work for the screen” says Boyle. Reboots seem to be the new “Prequel” of the movie biz, as Batman Begins and The Dark Knight have made us totally forget (almost) about Gov. Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze.

The Associated Press is reporting that an Australian production company has acquired the rights to The Phantom Legacy, a sequel to the 1996 flick, The Phantom, which starred Billy Zane as the masked hero who fights evil from his jungle headquarters. It also starred Kristy Swanson, Treat Williams, James Remar and Catherine Zeta-Jones. The Phantom began as a daily newspaper comic strip by Lee Falk in 1936. The protagonist — alter ego Kit Walker — is the 21st in a family of men who have passed the task of fighting injustice onto their sons. The first Phantom took the job to avenge his father's death at the hands of pirates. Legacy is being written by Tim Boyle who says the film will be set in the present day and will deal with the concept of destiny. It will also focus on the Father/Son relationship, and what it means to be The Phantom. Producer Bruce Sherlock,...

“First up this is a reboot ala Batman Begins and not a sequel to Simon Wincer's 1996 feature film as has been previously reported,” Franklin wrote.
“There are two main villains in this - one from the comic, the other an original but as to which ones they can't be disclosed for now. The Phantom himself and Diana Walker will be in it of course, ‘oh and their kids... he adds.”
"It will have some elements of the original comic, but we are making it work for the screen" Boyle said.

"The Phantom" will be getting a "reboot," not a sequel, according to writer Tim Boyle.
Following the recent announcement of the sequel, darkhorizons.com asked the film's writer, who clarified that the upcoming film is not a sequel to the 1996 Billy Zane-starrer film, as previously been reported.
Instead, like "Batman Begins," the new film will take an upgraded version starting with the costume. No more purple leotard outfit for the mysterious masked avenger.

Fans of "The Phantom" - the purple man is back!
According to the Associated Press, someone in Australia is very eager to develop a follow-up to the 1996 flick. The project is titled "The Phantom Legacy," and it is expected to start shooting some time next year.
Screenwriter Tim Boyle told the AP the film will focus on what it means to run around as the Phantom. Meanwhile, producer Bruce Sherlock said it will be better than its predecessor. Of course he said that...
Other than that, the only thing we know is that the flick is budgeted at $87 million. "The Phantom" is based on a character created by Lee Falk. Billy Zane played the masked hero in the first film, which also starred Catherine Zeta-Jones.
The question is, how really wants to see another "Phantom"? Feel free to share your thoughts on this after the jump.

The Phantom never dies. From father to son, the legacy is passed on, protecting Africa from evil in all forms dating back 21 generations. A second generation live-action film about the ageless hero was announced by Symington Productions according to the Associated Press.
Producer Bruce Sherlock obtained the rights to explore the themes in The Phantom Legacy. He had been an executive producer on the 1996 Paramount Pictures Phantom, which starred Billy Zane as the Ghost Who Walks. The movie suffered from poor marketing but was better than most recall.

He was the first to revel in skin-tight costumes -- a slippery slope that paved the way for Joel Schumacher to make superheroes nippley. He was also the first to throw on a mask with no visible pupils -- but while the Phantom may have been a trendsetter years ago, his trip to Hollywood was anything but. The 1996 release of The Phantom was a flop, even with the devilishly charming Billy Zane donning the purple tights.
But that's not stopping an Australian production company. Yahoo reports that Sherlock Symington Productions has nabbed the rights to The Phantom Legacy -- a follow-up to the first film. Expected to boast an $87 million price tag, the film will rip The Phantom out of the past and into the present while dealing with "the Father/Son relationship, and what it means to be The Phantom." What the Billy Zane?! The Associated Press is claiming that an Australia production company is developing a sequel to the 1996 comic book movie The Phantom called The Phantom Legacy. For some odd reason, this all seems a bit sketchy, especially considering it's coming from reporters in Australia without any other official confirmation. The article also...
