Tuesday would have been the first day of production on the sci-fi sequel “Tron: Ares,” but the film, like so much else in Hollywood, is now on hold indefinitely, said director Joachim Rønning lamented the “extremely frustrating” situation” on Tuesday.
“Today was supposed to be our first day of principal photography on Tron: Ares. Instead, we are shut down with over a hundred and fifty people laid off. It’s indefinite, which makes it exponentially harder for everyone,” Rønning wrote on Instagram.
He continued, “The AMPTP, SAG-AFTRA and WGA need to speed up the negotiating process and not leave the table until it’s done. This is Hollywood. We close deals for breakfast. Why do we suddenly have all the time in the world when every day is so precious? These tactics are extremely frustrating. It’s time for diplomacy so we can get back to work – under conditions that are fair to everybody.

Murphy’s involvement still hasn’t been confirmed, but now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Leto is being joined in the cast by Evan Peters of WandaVision and Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

Evan Peters, who starred as Quicksilver in Fox’s “X-Men” prequel series and earned acclaim playing Jeffrey Dahmer in Ryan Murphy’s blockbuster “Monster” Netflix miniseries, has joined the cast of Disney’s long-gestating “Tron: Ares,” an individual with knowledge told TheWrap on Wednesday.
Peters will star alongside Jared Leto in the sci-fi threequel helmed by Joachim Rønning, which will hopefully begin shooting in August in Vancouver. Emma Ludbrook, Jeffrey Springer and Leto are producing. Russell Allen is executive producing.
The Walt Disney Company has been trying to make a follow-up to “Tron: Legacy” for over a decade. The first “Tron,” which earned two Academy Award nominations — but none for its then-groundbreaking special effects — earned just $50 million worldwide on a $17 million budget. That was seen as a disappointment in 1982 but built enough of a cult audience for Disney to roll the dice in 2010 with the $170 million budgeted “Tron: Legacy.”

Evan Peters, star of “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” and “Mare of Easttown,” is joining Jared Leto in “Tron: Ares,” the third film in Disney’s extremely long-lived cyberspace franchise.
Joachim Rønning (“Maleficent: Mistress of Evil”) will direct the film from a script by Jesse Wigutow. Production is set for August (an actors strike notwithstanding).
Along with his frequent appearances on FX’s “American Horror Story” anthology series, Peters played Peter Maximoff in several “X-Men” movies for 20th Century Fox (before the studio was acquired by Disney), starting with 2014’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past.”
The original “Tron,” starring Jeff Bridges, debuted in 1982 with groundbreaking innovations in digital visual effects. Originally a flop, the film generated a cult following, which eventually led to the 2010 sequel “Tron: Legacy,” starring Bridges, Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde. “Top Gun: Maverick” filmmaker Joseph Kosinski made his directorial debut with the film. Deadline has confirmed that Evan Peters has joined Disney’s third installment of Tron, entitled, Tron Ares.
As we first told you, Jared Leto is starring in this sequel with Joachim Rønning directing. If there’s no SAG strike, the pic will hopefully shoot in Vancouver in August.
Leto will play Ares, the manifestation of the Tron program. No word on who Peters will play, but there’s two key parts that of a soldier in the virtual world and a gamer in the human sphere.
Emma Ludbrook, Jeffrey Springer and Leto are producing. Russell Allen is EP.
The first Tron was released by Disney in 1982 and starred Jeff Bridges as video game creator Kevin Flynn who wound up being warped inside his video game, forced to participate in gladiatorial games where his only chance of escape is with the help of a heroic security program. Welcome to the Grid, Evan Peters.
The actor, who generated acclaim for his portrayal of the title character in Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, has closed a deal to star opposite Jared Leto in Tron: Ares, the third installment of Disney’s technology-pushing movie series.
Joachim Ronning is directing the feature that is due to begin shooting August in Vancouver. Getting filming off the ground would be a coup for the studio, which has been trying to make a Tron 3 for over a decade and turn Tron into a bona fide brand and franchise.
Disney released the original Tron in 1982, with Jeff Bridges starring as video game designer Kevin Flynn, who is transported inside his own creation and teams up with Tron, a security program played by Bruce Boxleitner. The film was not considered a box office success but did earn two Oscar nominations. Ironically, neither was for visual effects,...

Jared Leto is getting on the Grid.
The Academy Award winner has officially been cast in upcoming “Tron” franchise installment, “Tron: Ares.” Joachim Rønning of “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” fame is currently in negotiations to direct, IndieWire can confirm.
Deadline first reported that “Tron: Ares” will serve as a direct follow-up to “Tron: Legacy,” which marked Jeff Bridges reprising his role from the original 1982 sci-fi film. Garret Hedlund and Olivia Wilde also starred in the Joseph Kosinski-helmed 2010 film. A slated follow-up was scrapped in 2015 that was reportedly set to have Kosinski, Hedlund, and Wilde returning. Leto was rumored to be joining the cast at the time.
“Tron: Ares” is written by Jesse Wigutow and production is set to start in August 2023. “Tron” follows an arcade lover who is trapped in a computer program called the Grid where he is forced to participate in gladiator games to survive.

Disney is going back to the grid.
After multiple false starts, the studio is back on track for a third “Tron” movie, with Jared Leto attached to star and “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” director Joachim Rønning in talks to helm. Nominally titled “Tron: Ares,” the film would follow the groundbreaking 1982 film “Tron” starring Jeff Bridges, and the 2010 sequel “Tron: Legacy,” which starred Bridges, Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde and was the feature directing debut of “Top Gun: Maverick” filmmaker Joseph Kosinski.
Leto first plugged into a third “Tron” movie in 2017 as the star and a producer, and he’s remained attached ever since. Garth Davis (“Lion”) signed on to helm the movie in 2020, but he ultimately parted ways with the project. Jesse Wigutow remains the film’s screenwriter, and Justin Springer, Jeffrey Silver and Emma Ludbrook are also producing.
A spokesperson for Disney had no comment.

Apple TV Plus has launched the first trailer for “WeCrashed,” a new drama limited series starring Jared Leto and Anne Hathaway.
Based on the podcast “WeCrashed: The Rise and Fall of WeWork” by Wondery, “WeCrashed” tells the story of WeWork, a commercial real estate company that provides shared workspaces for technology startups. The show focuses on the rise and fall of Adam Neumann, the Israeli businessman who founded the company and stepped down in 2019 as its value plummeted.
The trailer shows Neumann starting the company with his wife Rebekah (Anne Hathaway) and developing it into a global brand. Tensions rise between the two, however, as Rebekah increasingly feels like her contributions to the company are diminished by her husband and the public at large.
“I have a responsibility to think bigger,” Leto’s Adam says in the trailer. “I’m a golden goose laying golden eggs.”

Jared Leto’s take on WeWork founder Adam Neumann might just be crazy in the new trailer for the Apple TV+ series “WeCrashed.” But he’s got a partner ready to do it all with him.
The new footage from the limited series, which is based on the hit Wondery podcast “WeCrashed: The Rise and Fall of WeWork” from Lee Eisenberg and Drew Crevello and hits Apple TV+ on March 18, focuses more on the love story behind WeWork, as Leto’s Neumann and Anne Hathaway’s Rebecca Neumann come together. But Rebecca has ambitions of her own.
The footage also gives audiences their first look at America Ferrera’s character, as she asks Rebecca, “Is Adam for real?” Rebecca assures her friend that “I wouldn’t be with him if he wasn’t.” That said, as they go on the journey of creating and promoting WeWork together, Rebecca makes it...

Apple TV Plus has released a teaser trailer for “WeCrashed,” its upcoming limited series about the rise and fall of real estate startup WeWork and the couple who headed the company. The footage also comes alongside a newly announced premiere date of March 18.
“This isn’t a place for people to punch in and out,” Leto’s Adam Neumann deadpans. Hathaway’s Rebekaj Neumann then declares that “WeWork’s role is to elevate the world’s consciousness.”
WeWork was once viewed as the next hot startup, with a value of nearly $50 billion. However, the company pulled the plug on an initial public offering in September 2019 in the wake of revelations about the erratic management and personal enrichment of its now disgraced co-founder Adam Neumann. Neumann resigned from the company around this time, while WeWork accepted a bailout from SoftBank.
