Showtime’s new four-part documentary Spector, focused on the spectacular rise and spectacular fall of music pioneer and convicted murderer Phil Spector, is the best possible promotion for Showtime’s four-part documentary We Need to Talk About Cosby.
It’s such a difficult tightrope to walk when you’re trying to explore a disgraced icon — not simply the separating of the art from the artist, but finding a smart way to contextualize the art within the life of the flawed person who created it.
W. Kamau Bell’s conversation starter about Bill Cosby handled this task exceptionally. It isn’t aesthetically dynamic, but We Need to Talk About Cosby is smart and challenging at every turn, forcing viewers to ponder inextricable linkages between aspects of Cosby’s career and a personal life that has seen him accused of sexual misconduct by 50+ women. There are several moments throughout Showtime’s four-part docuseries on music producer Phil Spector that could frustrate audience members — and they all revolve around how we talk about Spector. In case you need a refresher: Phil Spector is an integral element in the creation of pop music. His “Wall of Sound” method of production resulted in some of the biggest hits of the ’50s and ’60s, including The Righteous Brothers’ “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling.” Spector also was convicted of murdering actress Lana Clarkson and was serving 19 years to life in prison before his death from Covid in 2021.
So on the one hand, musical genius. On the other, murderer. Where do the two halves meet? Can they ever? It’s a trend we’ve seen explored in documentaries like 2019’s “Leaving Neverland” and W. Kamau Bell’s “We Need to Talk About Cosby” earlier this year. In fact, Bell...

Spector, the new, four-part documentary premiering on Showtime on November 4th, is unique among music docs: It’s part true-crime narrative, part monumentally lurid Behind the Music. ‘Spector’ Examines the Life and Crime of Phil Spector, and Reclaims Lana Clarkson’s Story: TV Review
The pop hits of Phil Spector — and there are many of them — depend on a theatrical maximalism. As a producer, Spector’s innovation was the “Wall of Sound,” a shock-and-awe approach to music that is as dazzling as it is overwhelming. Just listen to the Ronettes’ “Be My Baby” or Ike & Tina Turner’s “River Deep — Mountain High” to understand his approach: The songs are so densely orchestrated that they’re practically tactile.
Spector’s reputation today is, rightly, more rooted in the events of his life than in the art he made. But “Spector,” a four-part documentary series on Showtime directed by Sheena M. Joyce and Don Argott, works to make a case that his music — its particular qualities and the stressful process by which it was made — helps explain the man.

When Hulu first entered the streaming game, it was mostly viewed as the place where you streamed television you missed last night. Whether it was the latest episode of “The Simpsons” or an investigative report on “20/20”, Hulu was the hub for television shows. While it has become known for exclusive TV series, they do also have a fine selection of original movies. Here are five of the best original new movies that you can stream on Hulu right now:

While the prospect of getting a docuseries that gives proper reverence to the comic book industry is exciting to any discerning fan, said excitement should be compounded with the series presence of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who will be involved as executive producers.
Serving as directors for Slugfest are the duo of Don Argott and Sheena M. Joyce, who helmed...

Anthony and Joseph Russo, who have been key creative members of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, are now bringing a new show to Quibi documenting the decades-long rivalry between Marvel and DC.
Quibi, the mobile TV subscription startup founded by Jeffrey Katzenberg, greenlit “Slugfest,” a documentary series executive produced by the Russo Brothers, whose directing credits include a string of hits for Marvel: “Avengers: Endgame,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Captain America: Winter Soldier” and “Captain America: Civil War.”
“Slugfest” is inspired by Reed Tucker’s book “Slugfest: Inside the Epic, 50-Year Battle between Marvel and DC.” The docu-series will chronicle the growth of comic books as a new American art form, following the rise of the two companies that went on to become comics-publishing and Hollywood powerhouses.
Producers promise that “Slugfest” will bring to light little-known stories from the history of both Marvel and DC, including interviews with creators of the best-known superhero characters in the world.

Chicago – The story of auto impresario John DeLorean is definitely one of truth is stranger than fiction, but also has a basis in “what ifs?” The fascinating new documentary of his life tells that story, breaking down the vagueness of how a former General Motors superstar got involved in a drug deal to save his own car company. As always, a situation like that has more loopholes.

A curious experiment that may be best suited to the freedom of a festival setting, “Framing John DeLorean” aims to finally crack the mystery of its titular subject. As we learn early on, the erstwhile car magnate has inspired several filmmakers over many years, but few of them have, until now, gotten their projects off the ground.
Directors Sheena M. Joyce and Don Argott are not just up-front about the difficulty DeLorean’s personality poses; they turn his opacity into prime motivation. This ambitious approach is, unfortunately, more intriguing than effective. That may be because, as the filmmakers freely admit, DeLorean appears impossible to know. They do make an unusually concerted effort though, approaching him from no less than three separate angles.
At first it appears that we’re watching a traditional documentary, in which various colleagues and relatives share their observations alongside well-sourced footage. We learn about the workaholic...

General Motors division head, muscle-car godhead, the auto industry’s No. 1 noncomformist, glamorous jet-setter, busted (but not convicted) cocaine trafficker: American rise-and-fall stories don’t get any juicier than John DeLorean. He was the golden boy of Fifties gray-flannel-suit idealism, before morphing into a Sixties speed-demon enabler and symbol of Seventies’ sideburned rebellion — and, because every decade gets the Icarus it deserves, ended up as the perfect parable of Eighties excess. Even if the tall, handsome maverick who shook up the Motor City had never given the world the Dmc-12 (that sleek design!

A visionary who flew too close to the sun. A dream of success that became a nightmare. A golden boy turned prince of darkness. Name your grandiose American metaphor, and the saga of John DeLorean, the Gm-executive-turned-lone-wolf-entrepreneur who invented the car of the future (only to see it relegated to the junkyard of the past), probably lives up to it. Yet as you watch “Framing John DeLorean,” a tasty and satisfying look at the rise and fall of the self-styled auto magnate of the ’70s and ’80s, you realize how easily a story like DeLorean’s can get consumed by the myths that emerge from it.
In “Framing John DeLorean,” the co-directors, Don Argott and Sheena M. Joyce, do a superb job of laying out the real story, in all its ambition and hubris and madness and tragedy, and separating the myths from the facts. And they succeed, in part,...

Alec Baldwin’s future on “Saturday Night Live” impersonating Donald Trump may be more unclear than that of the actual Trump presidency. Speaking to IndieWire to promote his new film with director Emilio Estevez, “The Public,” the conversation pivoted to his portrayal of the President.
“We’re not doing a David Fincher movie here, or a Soderbergh movie, where we’re gonna etch some finely rendered impersonation of Trump,” Baldwin said, when asked about how his impression has changed in the more than two years he’s been playing Trump. “I made him as two-dimensional as I believe he deserves to be made. And we’ve certainly vulgarized it from time to time, beyond certain limitations. But it’s essentially us repeating back what he says, and just holding up a mirror to what he says and does.”

Alec Baldwin, Morena Baccarin, Josh Charles star in the brand new trailer for Framing John Delorean.
It was announced earlier this week that the film would have it premiere at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival taking place April 24 – May 5. From Sundance Selects, Framing John Delorean opens in theaters and VOD June 7th.
Few left their mark on the automotive industry quite like John Z. DeLorean (1925-2005). As an engineer and executive at General Motors, beginning in the 1950s, he was at the helm of the industry’s successes of the era, including classic Pontiac and Chevrolet car models. Ascending to become the youngest division head in the Gm history, DeLorean broke away in 1973 to launch his own company. His signature stainless-steel DeLorean sports car was a notorious flop, though the model would later achieve pop culture infamy as the time-machine in Back to the Future.

The title Framing John DeLorean can be taken at least two ways – framing as in setting someone up for a fall, and framing as in putting in context. This new trailer for the film, making its world premiere at the upcoming Tribeca Film Festival, illustrates how directors Don Argott & Sheena M. Joyce intend to accomplish the latter.
Combining archival footage with a more traditional biopic approach featuring Alec Baldwin sporting massive, jet-black eyebrows and a mop of gray hair, Framing John DeLorean is the first feature film about a man whose name dominated headlines in the 1980s. Here’s how Sundance Selects describes it: “For the first time, Framing John DeLorean recounts the extraordinary life and legend of the controversial automaker, tracing his meteoric rise through the ranks of General Motors, his obsessive quest to build a sports car that would conquer the world, and his shocking fall from grace on charges of cocaine trafficking.

In the new film “Framing John DeLorean,” Alec Baldwin plays the beleaguered car manufacturer who invented the “Back to the Future” car and gambled everything in pursuit of the American dream.
But the question posed at the start of the first trailer for the film is, why hasn’t a movie been made about his life sooner?
“It’s got cocaine, hot chicks, sports cars, bombed out buildings, FBI agents, Margaret Thatcher, Ronald Reagan, hardcore drug dealers,” his son says in the first trailer for the film.

Pride, the celebration of the Lgbtq community through the month of June each year, is as good an occasion to mark quite how much progress in the battle for equality has been made, and how far there is to go. “Believer,” a sweetly earnest new documentary airing on HBO, has plenty of the latter; it exposes the painful ostracization and hatred of gay people in the Mormon community. But it shows plenty of progress, too, embodied in the person of Dan Reynolds, an appealing protagonist whose status as a proud ally is a splendid and sympathetic example of a society-wide change of heart that’s happening, albeit too slowly.

Alec Baldwin has officially signed on to play John DeLorean, the man best known as the founder of the DeLorean Motor Company. The DeLorean is most famously known as the time-traveling car used by Marty McFly and Doc Brown in the Back To The Future trilogy. Variety reports that Baldwin will appear in a series of scripted scenes that will be added to the untitled documentary about Delorean.
Baldwin will be bringing his hair and makeup team from Saturday Night Live with him to transform him into DeLorean.
The film is being directed by Don Argott and Sheena M. Joyce and production is under way right now.
The untitled DeLorean documentary is scheduled to be released in 2018. The movie will follow the automaker’s rise to stardom and fall from grace. Complete with interviews with colleagues, employees, lawyers, friends and family who knew him best.
