Filmmaker, music video director, and video artist Kahlil Joseph is set to make his feature directorial debut with Blknws® – The Feature Film (working title), an adaptation of of his video exhibition of the same name for Participant and A24.
Blknws® is described by the art exhibition curator Los Angeles Nomadic Division as “a ‘conceptual news program’, or ‘conceptual journalism,’ that is simultaneously a work of art as well as a media entity. It takes the form of a two-channel installation connected to a newscast that blurs the lines between art, reporting, entrepreneurship, and cultural critique.
“Exploring film as a powerful collective experience that can be manipulated through its essential visual and audio components, Blknws® reflects upon the contemporary period utilizing fragments of popular culture, archival material, and filmed news desk segments. Historical iconography sits side by side with ordinary images from our daily lives,” Land’s description continues. “When examined through Joseph’s lens,...

Co-produced by the Los Angeles Nomadic Division (Land), “Blknws” was presented as part of “Made in LA 2020: a version” and was displayed at 10 different venues and locations across Los Angeles, concluding with the Hammer Museum. A roomful of strangers are milling around the kitchen of an austere Victorian home when the first portal opens. It’s in the refrigerator. A family walks up to it and is swallowed whole by its comforting glow. As the door begins to creak shut, a young woman in a polka-dot skirt skips up to catch it. “Are you coming to The Gathering?” she smiles. “Come on — follow me.”

Terrence Malick showed up. Even as early risers headed to the SXSW panel discussion of his Song to Song at the Austin Convention Center, they no doubt wondered if the enigmatic filmmaker would actually be there. Last night, the film's producer Nicolas Gonda announced the director “may show” at the film's world premiere at SXSW, and indeed he did, sharing his thoughts on filmmaking in general and his latest film in particular: Song to Song, the star-packed project with Mich…...

“This film, as you will soon see, is a love story,” said producer Nicolas Gonda in his introduction of the film. “It’s for and about Austin, so it’s amazing to be here tonight.”
In addition to the film’s stars — Ryan Gosling, Rooney Mara, Michael Fassbender and Berenice Marlohe — the Paramount Theater in Austin was packed with a number of the big names attending the festival this year, including director Richard Linklater, James Franco and Nick Kroll. Few films this year live up to the promise of their title quite like Voyage of Time: The IMAX Experience. The new documentary from Terrence Malick (The New World) is a remarkable accomplishment that beautifully blends together everything from the dawn of time to the age of dinosaurs to present day. Seeing it at one of the few IMAX laser theaters in the world, the Bob Bullock Museum Theatre in Austin, TX, was a truly immersive experience. The sound is incredible, the visuals absolutely stunning. That's not something you often get to say when it comes to documentaries. So how did Voyage of Time: The IMAX Experience come to be? We spoke to two producers on the film, Sarah Green and Nicolas Gonda, about what it's like working with a great artist like Terrence Malick to create...

For more than a decade, Austin-based producers Sarah Green and Nicolas Gonda have helped Terrence Malick to achieve his far-flung filmmaking ambitions. Oscar-nominated “The Tree of Life,” starring Brad Pitt, has come and gone, as well as “Knight of Cups,” starring Christian Bale, and now arrives the 40-years-in-the-making documentary “Voyage of Time,” which actually started shooting in 2003 when renowned nature cinematographer Paul Atkins (who shot second unit on “The Tree of Life”) alerted the filmmakers that volcanoes were erupting in Hawaii.
So, they sent him off to capture some of the most extraordinary shots in the film, as molten lava bursts up under the ocean. One cameraman took the IMAX camera so close to exploding magma that his boots melted.
Backed by an original National Geographic Society grant, IMAX, foreign sales company Wild Bunch and indie distributor Broad Green (which began financing and releasing Malick’s films in 2014) the movie takes two forms.

The summer has arrived — at least if you’re going by Hollywood’s calendar. Our comprehensive preview for all four months will give you a hint as to what we most anticipate — but, for a more in-depth look, today we have our first monthly feature of the season. It should be noted that theatrical re-releases of the Jean-Luc Godard classic Band of Outsiders and Eiichi Yamamoto‘s animation, Belladonna of Sadness, both arriving on May 6th, as well as Fritz Lang‘s Destiny (on May 20th), are essential.
Getting to the new features, perhaps our most-anticipated studio release of the entire summer arrives, along with some of our festival favorites from the last year. To those lamenting the lack of superhero films: we figured it was best not to waste the space, as they are certainly already on your radar if you’re planning to buy a ticket. Check out...

Unless there’s a surprise announcement, it looks like Cannes will once again be Terrence Malick-less, despite rumors that one of his upcoming features was going to premiere there. However, this summer, one of his executive-producing efforts, Almost Holy, a new documentary from Steve Hoover (Blood Brother), will see a release, and today the first trailer has landed.
Previously titled Crocodile Gennadiy, it follows a Ukrainian pastor, Gennadiy Mohknenko, who has stirred controversy in his attempt to fight child homelessness by abducting street kids to bring to his private rehabilitation center. As quoted on the poster, The Village Voice‘s Aaron Hillis called it “the best superhero vigilante movie of the year,” and Hoover’s picture — also produced by Nicolas Gonda and featuring a score from Atticus Ross — looks like a compelling watch.

Being that Terrence Malick isn’t necessarily available for the career-spanning interview — or even a soundbite — the next best thing for learning more about his creative process comes from those that work closest with him in development: the producers. Before his Christian Bale-led drama Knight of Cups enters a limited release this Friday, I had the chance to speak with Sarah Green, Nicolas Gonda, and Ken Kao
While Green has worked with Malick since 2005’s The New World and Gonda came onboard with The Tree of Life, Knight of Cups marks the first collaboration with Kao, who has also executive-produced this year’s The Nice Guys and Silence. It was a delight to discuss their first experiences seeing a film from Malick, his creative process, what’s in store for the upcoming, Austin-set Weightless, witnessing the collaboration between Malick, Emmanuel Lubezki, and Jack Fisk, and more. Check out the full conversation below.

The 7th film from director Terrence Malick (The Thin Red Line, Tree of Life), Knight Of Cups (the title refers to the Tarot card depicting a romantic adventurer guided by his emotions) offers both a vision of modern life and an intensely personal experience of memory, family, and love.
Opening on March 4, watch the trailer below.
Knight Of Cups follows writer Rick (Christian Bale, The Fighter, American Hustle) on an odyssey through the playgrounds of Los Angeles and Las Vegas as he undertakes a search for love and self. Even as he moves through a desire-laden landscape of mansions, resorts, beaches and clubs, Rick grapples over complicated relationships with his brother (Wes Bentley) and father (Brian Dennehy). The 6th Annual Napa Valley Film Festival (Nvff) taking place November 9 - 13, 2016 is now accepting film submissions. Nvff showcases an outstanding presentation of independent filmmaking while also building a strong sense of community around the art of visual storytelling. The ultimate celebration of the best films and engaging filmmakers, accompanied by Napa Valley’s world-class food, wine and hospitality, Nvff is a five-day immersive experience that annually lights up the gloriously scenic towns of Napa, Yountville, St. Helena and Calistoga.
Nvff welcomes submissions of any genre and will be selecting approximately 100 new independent films to be programmed alongside a dozen or so awards season contending films, presented courtesy of Nvff’s many studio partners. Submission categories include narrative features and shorts, documentary features and shorts, and short features (films with running times between 20 and 50 minutes). Organizers are looking for films that will best entertain, inspire, educate and intrigue audiences.
All of the films programmed from submissions are eligible for Audience Awards. Audience Awards presented each year include: Favorite Narrative Feature, Favorite Narrative Short, Favorite Documentary Feature, Favorite Documentary Short, Favorite Short Feature, Favorite Actress and Favorite Actor. The festival also offers a variety of Juried Awards. The jurors for 2016 will be announced at a later date. Three jurors will serve on each of the five juries: Narrative Features, Documentary Features, Narrative Shorts, Documentary Shorts, and The Lounge (a collection of bolder, edgier films curated from submissions). All juried and audience awards will be presented at an exciting Awards Ceremony on Nvff’s Closing Night, Sunday, November 13, 2016. All award winners will take home signed collectible magnums and/or double magnums of wine from Nvff’s Vintner Circle winery partners.
Feature length films (50 minutes or longer) can be programmed in one of the following sections: Narrative or Documentary Features Competition (U.S. productions only), The Lounge (foreign and domestic productions), or Special Presentations (foreign and domestic productions). An example of a curated film selection from Nvff’s 2014 Special Presentations was the Latino Spotlight, composed of three feature length films and four short films, all in Spanish language and/or dealing with Latino culture and heritage. Each film in the Special Presentations component of the program is up for Audience Awards.
Short films (narrative and documentary, under 20 minutes of running time) are programmed in curated collections. Shorts may be selected for the Narrative or Documentary Shorts competitions, for The Lounge, or as part of Special Presentations. Short Features (running times between 20 and 50 minutes) play in curated collections of 2-3 films.
The 20 films in Nvff’s U.S. feature competition categories (10 each) vie for the titles of Best Narrative Feature and Best Documentary Feature (as determined by our prestigious juries). Each award comes with a $10,000 cash prizes presented by Meadowood Napa Valley. The 20 directors of these films also participate in Nvff’s unique Artists-in-Residence program that includes a six-night stay at Meadowood Napa Valley, master classes with industry leaders, networking with and learning from each other, pairing with top festival patrons at lavish receptions and winemaker dinners, and enjoying the world-class hospitality of one of wine country’s most beautiful resorts. Past Faculty for the Artists-in-Residence Program have included producer Christine Vachon (Killer Films), composer Carter Burwell, writer-director Atom Egoyan, Cinetic Media’s John Sloss, indie distributor Kevin Iwashina, producer Nicolas Gonda, producer Michael de Luca, and Amazon’s Ted Hope.
Filmmakers can submit films through FilmFreeway or Withoutabox.com. For early submission with discounted entry fees, the Earlybird Deadline is February 26 and the final extended submission deadline is June 24.

Broad Green Pictures has released two brief clips, more like seconds, from Knight Of Cups.
The never-before-seen footage was created by filmmaker Terrence Malick and his team.
The film opens in cinemas on March 4.

Leave it up to Terrence Malick — supposedly a main source of inspiration for Star Wars: The Force Awakens — to put his actors in the moment. “Even when they were actors, Terry would still tell me they weren’t,” Christian Bale tells Standard, recounting an experience during Knight of Cups. “We were filming in a strip club, and Teresa Palmer’s there in her little silver hotpants and I’m asking her how long she’d been dancing for? Does she enjoy it? What got her into it? I had no idea that she was an actress until about a week after working with her. Suddenly I saw a billboard with her face on it and I went ‘What?’”

It’s been a couple months since the last edition of What’s Up Doc? placed Michael Moore’s surprise world premiere of Where To Invade Next at the top of this list and in the meantime much shuffling has taken place and much time has been spent on various new endeavors (namely my Buffalo-based film series, Cultivate Cinema Circle). Finally taking its rightful place at the top, D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hagedus’ Unlocking the Cage is in the midst of being scored by composer James Lavino, according to Lavino’s own personal site. Though the project has been taking shape at its own leisurely pace, I’d expect to see the film making its festival debut in early 2016.

The fall festival rush is upon us. Locarno is currently ramping up. Venice has released their line-up and Thom Powers and the Toronto International Film Festival team have dropped a bomb with a previously unannounced new feature from powerhouse docu-provocateur Michael Moore. It is truly a miracle that the production of a film such as Moore’s upcoming Where To Invade Next (see still above) managed to go completely undetected by the filmmaking community until it was literally announced to world premiere at one of the largest film festivals in the world. Programmed as a one of the key films in the Special Presentations section at Tiff, the film sees Moore telling “the Pentagon to ‘stand down’ — he will do the invading for America from now on.” Also announced to premiere at Tiff was Avi Lewis’ This Changes Everything, which has slowly been rising up this list, as well as...

It’s been a surprisingly interesting month of moving and shaking in terms of doc development. Just a month after making his first public funding pitch at Toronto’s Hot Docs Forum, legendary doc filmmaker Frederick Wiseman took to Kickstarter to help cover the remaining expenses for his 40th feature film In Jackson Heights (see the film’s first trailer below). Unrelentingly rigorous in his determination to capture the American institutional landscape on film, his latest continues down this thematic rabbit hole, taking on the immensely diverse New York City neighborhood of Jackson Heights as his latest subject. According to the Kickstarter page, Wiseman is currently editing the 120 hours of rushes he shot with hopes of having the film ready for a fall festival premiere (my guess would be Tiff, where both National Gallery and At Berkeley made their North American debut), though he’s currently quite a ways away from his $75,000 goal.

Their new multi-million dollar Event Cinema Fund will provide capital, expertise, and other resources for select films that promote positive discussion and community-building. Eligible projects should also demonstrate a relationship with an audience through crowdfunding campaigns, the support of regional or national organizations, or corporate partners. The Event Cinema Fund is also looking for films that utilize innovative storytelling, hybrid distribution models, and community-driven screenings to get the word out.

Tugg has moved to plug one of the gaps in the marketplace. Over the past three years, Nicolas Gonda, co-founder and CEO of the on-demand movie site, which has been working with studios and indies alike in helping to match movies and audiences, realized that applying the right resources would help increase the value of movies down the food chain. So Tugg is partnering with New Balloon, a cross-platform media company focused on advancing innovative storytelling technologies, to invest marketing and distribution resources for social impact projects. They will form a multi-million dollar Event Cinema Fund. Through the fund, both companies will provide high-impact investment capital, expertise, and other resources toward marketing and distributing culturally significant films. The Event Cinema fund is a reaction to what, "looking back, looked like missed opportunities," Gonda told me at the Art House Convergence in Midway Utah. "We could...

The Berlin Film Festival this morning announced that Terrence Malick’s Knight Of Cups would world premiere in competition there in February, offering up the most recent piece of official intel on the secrecy-shrouded film. A few short hours later, our cup just about runneth over with new information. FilmNation Entertainment has released the first trailer for the movie which stars Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett and Natalie Portman. (Watch it above).
We already knew the story dealt with temptations, celebrity, and excess. Now, we’ve gotten a look at Bale’s lead character, Rick, as he navigates those facets of the Hollywood fast-life, questioning who he’s become. We also have a somewhat cryptic synopsis to go with the fresh images: “Once there was a young prince whose father, the king of the East, sent him down into Egypt to find a pearl. But when the prince arrived, the people poured him a cup.

Emerging digital and bespoke theatrical platforms give filmmakers and distributors a fighting chance of success in the new era, attendees at the Afm’s distribution panel heard on Tuesday (November 11).
Moderator Russell Schwartz, president of domestic marketing at Relativity Europa Distribution, and five panellists discussed the opportunities that await those who embrace new paradigms and warned of over-reliance on the old model for those outside the studio system.

An organization known for crowdfunding wants to help indie film producers distribute their films. Seed&Spark has teamed up with Tugg, a website that lets people choose the movies that play in their local cinema, on a touring seminar that teaches producers how get their films from development to festivals to local movie theaters. The seminar, which is being offered free of charge at upcoming film festivals in Hollywood, Las Vegas, Vancouver, and Austin, is more about developing an audience than simply making a buck. "While financial returns are important," said Emily Best, founder and CEO of Seed&Spark, "what we are trying to do is teach a comprehensive beginning-to-end course to help filmmakers build meaningful connections with growing audiences using the tools for crowdfunding." Tugg has allowed filmmakers to get their features into local movie theaters by pre-building an audience online. If a certain threshold of supporters purchase tickets in,...

To consider one’s self a fan of Terrence Malick’s oeuvres is, for lack of a better term, cinephile martyrdom. As one of the two current projects that should be released this year (how many times have we said this), the formerly titled Lawless sounds like a Grand Slam in terms of musical acts assisting a romantic backdrop of a good looking set of actors and actresses (they’ll certainly look lush with Emmanuel Lubezki assisting in the photography) this mostly scriptless project might turn out to be a first-cousin comparison the largely dismissed To the Wonder.
