Veteran News Corp. TV executive David Hill is stepping in to oversee Fox’s flagship reality series American Idol and The X Factor. Hill, who serves as Senior Evp of News Corp. after a long tenure as chairman and CEO of Fox Sports, is not a replacement for Fox’s departing alternative programming president Mike Darnell but will take over his duties on Idol and X Factor. Following Darnell’s recent announcement that he was stepping down, there has been a decision-making vacuum on the two shows, with Idol in particular in dire need of someone to oversee its upcoming overhaul following record-low ratings. Related: Mike Darnell On His Decision To Leave Fox & His Future Three of the four judges — Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Randy Jackson — already announced they are not coming back. Executive producers Nigel Lythgoe and Ken Warrick also are not expected to continue, but even that decision has not been formalized,...

It looks as if the dust is starting to settle over at Fox. Following the high-profile departure of alternative programming head Mike Darnell on May 24, a highly placed source tells The Hollywood Reporter that the network has appointed one of its own to step in and oversee American Idol and X Factor. David Hill, currently senior executive vp at News Corp. and a longtime fixture at the broadcasting giant where he ran Fox Sports Media Group, shepherded the launch of Fox Sports Japan and served in an advisory role across the company, will take on the more traditional

The Fox Sports Media Group has an upfront presentation scheduled for this afternoon and is expected to use that platform to announce the launch of its first national cable sports network, Fox Sports 1. The all-sports network will go live in August, timed to the start of college football season and David Hill, the former head of the Fox Sports Media Group, has been brought in to oversee the creation and launch. Plans for the channel have been brewing for some time – News Corp. COO Chase Carey last month called it the “world’s worst kept secret” – but up to now details were scant including what sports the network would carry. According to The New York Times, Fox Sports 1 will have Nascar, Major League Baseball, college basketball and football, soccer (including the 2018 and 2022 World Cups) and Ufc fights. Also, an in-studio show will be hosted by Regis Philbin who last week hinted at the prospect.

After keeping a relatively low profile since the CBS upfront, where the network announced Ashton Kutcher as his replacement on Two and a Half Men, Charlie Sheen is back in the limelight. I hear the troubled actor has been pitched to some networks and studios for a new comedy series. It is unclear if there is a specific premise or the pitch is only for Sheen's acting services. According to TMZ, Sheen's camp is in "deep negotiations" with a broadcast network for a new sitcom that would go straight-to-series. CBS is out of the picture, and sources indicate that ABC and NBC are not happening either. That leaves Fox, where the actor took an exploratory meeting in March, as the only broadcast possibility, though the network loaded up on comedies for next season with three new half-hour series ordered and two more pilots -- Family Album and Little in Common...

Fox reps have confirmed a TMZ report that actor Charlie Sheen met on Thursday with several top Fox executives. I have the details. The sitdown, which happened on the Fox lot, was set up by Fox Sports for Sheen to speak with Fox Sports president David Hill. But then Hill invited Fox entertainment chairman Peter Rice and alternative president Mike Darnell. All three top execs were present at the meeting with Sheen. Word is that no show ideas were pitched from either side at what turned out to be an exploratory meeting. It is unclear whether Sheen would do anything specifically for Fox Sports, but Charlie is a big sports fan with a passion for baseball (he starred in the Major League movie franchise). Sheen also has become a major draw on Fox Sports Radio with his frequent appearances on the Dan Patrick Show, which is simulcasting on Fox Sports Net.

Charlie Sheen may have made CBS say goodbye with his erratic behavior but it doesn't mean he can't lure other major networks. TMZ is reporting that Fox's top TV executives, including chairman Peter Rice, are looking forward to sign the former "Two and a Half Men" star.
Words are, Sheen had a meeting with them on Thursday, March 17 and tried to come up with a show idea for more than an hour. TMZ heard that one idea is to set up a late-night talk show although in the end of the discussion, nothing came out concrete. The conversation also involved Mike Darnell, President of Alternative Entertainment for Fox and David Hill, President of Fox Sports.
On another news, the actor has reached 3 million followers on Twitter, meaning he holds the new Guinness World Record. He passed the milestone on Sunday, March 20 and paid tribute to @Boi_Wanda "for being my 3,000,000th Cadre.

Despite the fact that NBC Universal took a whopping $200 million dollar hit by airing the 2010 Winter Olympics, Fox, the only network of the Big Four to have never showed them, is keen to bid on the upcoming games.

With the TV rights for both the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, and the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, up for grabs, the broadcast nets are getting their ducks in a row -- even though the International Olympic Committee has yet to decide when it will open the bidding. After last month's halftime performance by the Who, the Super Bowl has apparently run out of sixtysomething classic rockers suitable for the year's most watched musical showcase. Following a long stretch of such senior rockers as Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones and relative youngsters Prince and U2, next year's halftime act will be someone younger, twangier and female.
So says Fox Sports president David Hill. Asked by the Los Angeles Times if he could promise that next year's halftime act would be someone under 60, Hill said, "Oh, please God yes." NBC successfully has battled network rivals, time differences and controversy during two decades of Olympics. But on the eve of the Vancouver Winter Games, the Peacock might bow to an intractable foe: economics.

The Peacock's troubles surprise many observers, who have gotten used to NBC and its impresario, Dick Ebersol, meeting often-Olympian challenges. News Corp. has put the final touches on a management restructuring of its cable TV operations.
Effective immediately, Fox entertainment chairman Peter Rice will add oversight of FX Networks (FX and Fox Movie Channel), assuming the title of entertainment chairman at Fox Networks Group.
The move brings all entertainment-centered domestic Fox networks -- broadcast and cable -- under one executive, Rice, and marks a big promotion for the former Fox Searchlight topper, who has been in the TV business for 10 months.
Similarly, Fox Sports chairman and CEO David Hill will be in charge of all Fox sports TV operations, including Fox Sports, the company's 19 regional sports networks, Fox Soccer Channel, Speed, Fox Sports en Espanol and Fuel TV. He also will oversee the company's joint venture sports businesses Stats and Big Ten Network.

Luxury label Gucci is jumping on the 3D movie bandwagon by designing 3D glasses for movie audiences. Hollywood is currently enthralled by 3D, hoping that audiences will pay more to see their movies if they have an added third dimension. This may be so, but the only way to see a 3D movie properly is by putting on a horrific pair of impractical black-framed glasses that even Buddy Holly wouldn't wear. Awkward for everyone, complicated for those who already wear glasses. At the recent 3D Summit (!) held in Los Angeles last week and attended by movie and video game bigwigs, a press release was sent out which announced that the luxury label Gucci is planning to bring out prescription 3D glasses for shortsighted viewers around the world. This is good news according to Fox Sports chairman David Hill, who thinks this could add to the already great potential of 3D...

The new big thing in Hollywood is to turn the majority of upcoming movies to 3-D. Box office numbers suggest that movie-goers are willing to pay a few extra bucks for the experience, but critics are not sure about the future of stereoscopic filmmaking. To watch a 3-D film, audiences must wear special glasses that are often ill-fitting and unattractive. Plus, they're a big inconvenience for those who already wear glasses. At the 3D Entertainment Summit came an announcement of one possible answer: designer and prescription glasses with lenses compatible with Real D 3D. While Real D hasn't made a formal announcement, Real D executive Michael Lewis tipped the story after Fox Sports chairman David Hill said he thought great-looking glasses would change the picture for 3D. "I have two teenaged girls, and they don't want to go on dates looking like they're going to do some spot welding," Hill said.

While there are many complaints about 3D, one I hear often is about how uncomfortable the glasses are. If you see a 3D movie with RealD technology, they usually hand out disposable cheap plastic 3D glasses that are pretty ugly. For a long time, companies like RealD and 3D advocates like Jeffrey Katzenberg have been pushing for custom designer 3D glasses that you buy and keep on you and bring every time you go see a 3D movie would be coming soon. At the on-going 3D Entertainment Summit, RealD founder Michael Lewis finally said that designer glasses will be available "in certain outlets" before Avatar opens in December. The statement was made at a presentation at the 3D Entertainment Summit because Fox Sports chairman David Hill explained that, "I have two teenaged girls, and they don't want to go on dates looking like they're going to do some spot welding.

This has to stop. I don't know how I became the defacto Cinematical poster for all things 3D, but in less than a week I've gone from hypothesizing about the Oscars creating an awards category for 3D films to sharing my enthusiasm for Zemeckis' A Christmas Carol to raving about how pointless a 3D CGI animated prequel to Night of the Living Dead sounds to the announcement of a new 3D study program at USC's film school. And if that's not enough of the third dimension for one man to take in so short a span, now comes word that Real D has plans to manufacture 3D-wear from designers like Gucci.
Variety has the scoop from the recent 3D Entertainment Summit, "While Real D hasn't made a formal announcement, Real D topper Michael Lewis tipped the story after Fox Sports chairman David Hill said he thought great-looking glasses would change the picture for 3D.

New York -- Always known for its production values, Fox Sports is trying to balance technical expertise with making sure its telecasts are cost-effective.

Travel costs have been cut back and deals with vendors -- when it comes to power, catering and mobile production units -- have been renegotiated. Fox Sports has cut by a day the time that it takes to build its compound. And it has partnered with Espn to save costs, with the networks hiring the same technicians who...

New York -- HBO Sports is drawing on Emmy-winning Fox Sports announcer Joe Buck to replace Bob Costas at the network.
Buck will host a quarterly talk show for HBO Sports beginning in May. It will replace "Costas Now," which the NBC sportscaster did at HBO for much of the past seven years. Costas left HBO Sports this week to take a new gig at the Mlb Network.
Buck is play-by-play announcer for Fox Sports' NFL and Major League Baseball telecasts. That won't change, but he'll add the talk show, which HBO said might include a live town-hall-style format.
HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg said he and Buck had been talking for about a year, though they've known each other much longer. The talks grew serious when HBO realized that Costas would leave for Mlb Network, and Greenburg said he moved quickly to sign him.

NEW YORK -- David Hill is returning to his former job running Fox Sports after a two-year sojourn at DirecTV.
The stock swap removing News Corp.'s stake in DirecTV has led Hill back to Fox Sports as chairman and CEO, where he has been off and on since December 1993, when he founded the division.
Hill left in March 2005 to become DirecTV's entertainment president but kept his hand in the network as chairman in an nonexecutive role while day-to-day operations were being run by Fox Sports president Ed Goren. Hill left DirecTV this month and returned full time to Fox.
In an interview Tuesday from Phoenix, where he was attending the NFL owners meeting, Hill said he had a great time at DirecTV, learned a lot and worked with "some really wonderful people."
He said it was an eye-opening experience because at DirecTV, unlike Fox Sports, it's not just a network but a platform that uses VOD and other technologies.
