Bruce Springsteen will be the subject of Deliver Me From Nowhere, a biopic from director Scott Cooper. The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White is the top choice to star.
Writer and director Scott Cooper is no stranger to musical films, having written and directed the terrific 2009 drama Crazy Heart, which saw Jeff Bridges play an alcoholic country singer, for which he won an Oscar for Best Actor.
Deliver Me From Nowhere, much like Bob Marley: One Love, which is still in cinemas, will focus on the creation of one iconic album, in this case Nebraska, which Springsteen made in 1982. It is often cited as his masterpiece. It was released between 1980’s The River and 1984’s Born In The USA, and Springsteen recorded it without his regular collaborators The E Street Band. Born In The USA is one of the best selling albums of all time.

Gurinder Chadha's coming-of-age comedy hits all the right notes - and not just in terms of its Bruce Springsteen soundtrack. It's 1987 and Javed has high hopes of being a writer. When a friend (Aaron Phagura) turns him on to The Boss, Javed becomes his No.1 fan and.uses the music for inspiration. Underpinned by the engaging memoir by Sarfraz Manzoor, from which it is adapted, this is a pacy consideration of teenage life of the period that tackles more serious considerations of the racism and prejudice of the period lightly but effectively.
The Son, Amazon Prime
Anne-Katrin Titze writes: The center of Florian Zeller’s intergenerational drama, The Son, adapted from his play Le Fils by Christopher Hampton, is occupied by a cypher. Nicholas (Zen McGrath) is 17 and lives with his mother Kate in Brooklyn.

Refresh for latest…: As the United States wakes up to the news that the presidential election is still undecided, industry fixtures are beginning to chime in with a mix of hope and anxiety. But, despite Donald Trump’s false claim that he “already won” over Joe Biden on Tuesday night, several stars posting on Twitter are focused on the votes that are still to be counted.
The very politically engaged Mark Ruffalo urged folks to “hang tough,” while others echoed the sentiment:

Three years ago BAFTA became embroiled in a race row when it announced all-white acting nominations. This year, the event has revealed a similar lack of diversity in its main acting categories.
All 20 of the best actor and best supporting actor nominees are white, with Margot Robbie and Scarlett Johansson even afforded two nominations apiece. By our count, across BAFTA’s 160+ total nominees, there are fewer than five black nominees and only a handful of Asian nominees.
It didn’t take long for the social media axes to grind. A few minutes in fact.
Shortly after the BAFTA nominations were announced, the Twitter hashtag awards organizers dread began to take hold: #Baftassowhite.
A number of film critics adopted the tag, citing movies such as Parasite, Pain And Glory, The Farewell, Hustlers, Harriet, Us and Clemency as movies whose stars were worthy of more attention.

For awards season pundits, the Golden Globes offer double the prognostications, and double the fun.
Films and actors can compete in drama or musical/comedy categories, so a drama with some humor, such as “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” will most likely find an easy path to a kudo, rather than competing in the much more crowded drama feature race.
That said, the musical/comedy race has produced such Oscar-winning best pictures as 2019’s “Green Book,” 2017’s “La La Land” and 2012”s “The Artist,” plus several nominees that made the ballot but didn’t take the big prize.
Music or Comedy
This year, the adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s legit veteran “Cats” is the only traditional musical competing in the category. The trailer elicited mixed response but generated a lot of talk.

An angry mob of white men, marching down a street holding placards emblazoned with messages of hate like, "Go back to where you came from!" while local police guard their assertive troop along a busy street. Angry protesters on either side of the street yell slogans of their own in a futile attempt to counteract the bigotry. Above it all hangs a billboard of a conservative political leader, with promises of a "united, great" nation.

The latest jukebox musical is Blinded by the Light, and you might be surprised to learn that the Bruce Springsteen tribute is based on a true story! Set in the 1980s and telling the story of a British-Pakistani teen who becomes a Springsteen fan, it's closely based on the life of writer Sarfraz Manzoor, as well as some of the memories of his friend and director, Bend It Like Beckham's Gurinder Chadha.
To get to Blinded by the Light, we have to go through Greetings From Bury Park, Manzoor's autobiographical novel. In the novel, he describes how he grew up feeling like a misfit, but became inspired to begin writing his own lyrics and poetry after being introduced to Springsteen's music. The film portrays a somewhat fictionalized version of Manzoor's memories, taking creative liberties where necessary.

Blinded by the Light co-writer/director Gurinder Chadha knows firsthand what it feels like to be an outsider. Born in Kenya when the country was a British colony, she grew up part of the Indian/Asian diaspora who made their way from East Africa to London. For that reason, the 59-year-old’s movies has always dealt with the immigrant experience, and her latest is no different, telling the story of a Muslim Pakistani teenager growing up in Thatcher’s England whose narrowly structured life is saved when he’s turned on to the music of Bruce Springsteen during the late ‘80s National Front/dole queue era. It serves as a poignant parallel to the xenophobia of today.
Likewise, Chadha is a huge Springsteen fan, who pursued her dream of making a movie about The Boss’ music based on the true-life memoir of co-writer (and fellow diehard) Sarfraz Manzoor. It took...

It would be easy to assume that the new movie Blinded by the Light — which squeezes maximum uplift out of the tale of a 1980s British-Pakistani teen in the gritty U.K. town of Luton who finds liberation in the music of Bruce Springsteen — is part of the current Hollywood wave of classic-rock-sploitation (Bohemian Rhapsody, Rocketman, Yesterday, and soon, no doubt, Styx and Kansas biopics). In reality, while the trend certainly didn’t hurt its buzz at Sundance earlier this year, Blinded by the Light is a low-budget British independent film,...

Bruce Springsteen’s music has always been cinematic, which is one reason why so many of his songs strike a chord at the movies.
Friday is the premiere of the film, “Blinded By The Light,” which tells the story of a British-Pakistani teenager and his journey after discovering the Boss’ music. Based on the book, “Greetings From Bury Park,” by Sarfraz Manzoor, the film makes excellent use of Springsteen classics like “Jungleland” and “The Promised Land.”
But no matter where they’re used, Springsteen’s songs enliven film scenes. And the man himself does as much in “High Fidelity” — a fantasy sequence from the 2000 film in which he gives advice to John Cusack’s character as he strums his Fender and tells him to “move on down the road.”
Which is what we’re going to do, after serving up these six great examples of Springsteen music used well in films.

Days before last January’s rapturous Sundance premiere of “Blinded by the Light,” director Gurinder Chadha was struggling with her decision to cut the best scene in the entire film. “It’s just not going to work,” she remembered thinking. “It’s too fucking corny. And we’re already going to get it in the neck from so many cynical British people who are going to think the movie is cheesy as hell.” She took it out.
Chadha, who boasts that her “Bend It Like Beckham” connected with people around the globe so profoundly that it became the first Western-made film to ever air on television in North Korea, knows a thing or two about what audiences are looking for. But if you’ve seen “Blinded by the Light,” it’s easy to appreciate how difficult this particular editing decision must have been — even for her.

During a summer dominated by Marvel characters and Disney films, two British imports managed to sneak in under the radar, both bringing the music of two of the best-loved artists of all time to the big screen – The Beatles and Bruce Springsteen. When Blinded By the Light first premiered at Sundance, it immediately became a buzzy crowd-pleaser that was picked up by New Line. That was in January. As we near the end of summer, the musical dramedy has maintained its buzz like the longevity and energy of a Bruce Springsteen song. Directed by Gurinder Chadha (Bend It Like Beckham) and based on Sarfraz Manzoor’s memoir Greetings from Bury Park: Race, Religion and Rock N’ Roll the film stars newcomer Viveik Kalra in an emotional story of race, cultural identity, family and friendship told through the music of The Boss.

Chicago – Finding joy for many people is rooted in music, and nothing expresses that joy like the love of a particular artist. Bruce Springsteen is the rocker that helps a British immigrant through some hard times in the new film “Blinded by the Light,” and the beneficiary of that joy is portrayed by Viveik Kaira.
Based on a true story by journalist Sarfraz Manzoor, the story concerns Javid (Kaira) and his immigrant Pakistani family living in the town of Luton, in 1980s England. Javid is frustrated by his life there – which includes racism and harassment – and the clashes with his traditional father (Kulvinder Ghir) over his western ways and desire to be a writer. Things change when his friend Roops (Aaron Phagura) introduces him to the music of Bruce Springsteen, and the New Jersey rocker’s freedom-inspiring lyrics motivates Javid to break out of every stereotype that has chained him.

August’s box office traffic jam is turning into full-on pileup. After five new nationwide releases last weekend, most of which failed in spectacular fashion, five more newcomers are arriving on movie theater marquees. It could mean another rough outing for Hollywood studios.
Universal’s raunchy comedy “Good Boys,” Sony’s animated “Angry Birds” sequel and Entertainment Studio’s shark thriller “47 Meters Down: Uncaged” look to have the best start among fresh offerings, but there’s a chance those will be the only films to hit double-digit debuts.
“The Angry Birds Movie 2” is getting a jump on the weekend by launching on Tuesday for a projected $16 million to $18 million from 3,800 theaters during its first six days of release. Some box office watchers estimate the film could reach $20 million, but even those numbers would be a huge drop from its predecessor, 2016’s “Angry Birds.” The first film, based on...

For some people, Bruce Springsteen doesn’t just write lyrics — he sings words to live by. That’s the case for Javed (dynamite newcomer Viveik Kalra), a no-hope British-Pakistani teen feeling the financial squeeze of Thatcherism in 1987 Luton. Then he hears Springsteen for the first time, and the words of “Dancing in the Dark” jump out of his headphones and into his life. He’s exhilarated. Look for this exuberant gift of a movie to hit you the same way.

Full disclosure: I’m a massive Bruce Springsteen fan. Despite hailing from New York, not New Jersey, and being born in 1987, when Springsteen was already huge and, at the time, seen as a relic of rock and roll’s past, The Boss speaks to me. His music, his words, they’re something more than just songs. I say that because it really does feel like the new movie Blinded by the Light was made for me. However, that’s only part of why I love it so much. Perfectly attuned to Springsteen, it’s also a massively entertaining coming of age tale and a real crowd pleasing endeavor. Simply put, it’s the best thing I’ve seen all year and I’d be surprised if it didn’t top 2019’s cinematic offerings in my eyes. The film is a music centric coming of age story. Bruce Springsteen’s previously unreleased song “I’ll Stand by You” is one of several Springsteen tracks to be included on the soundtrack to Blinded by the Light, a new film inspired by his music. The musician originally penned the song for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, but it never made the final cut. It’s only loosely inspired by J.K. Rowling’s story, with lines like “Together we’ll chase those thieves that won’t leave you alone/ Out from the under the bed, out from over our home.

Bruce Springsteen was the guest of honor at the Wednesday night (Aug. 7) premiere of “Blinded by The Light” at the Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park, New Jersey.
Springsteen walked the red carpet with his wife, Patti Scialfa, and stopped to take a photo with stars Viveik Kaira and Aaron Phagura, writer/director/producer Gurinder Chadha, and screenwriter/author Sarfraz Manzoor, whose story is the basis of the film.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer was seated inside the theatre with 1,500 guests to screen the movie, which is set for release on Aug. 16. The film follows a Pakistani-British teenager and his life-changing journey through Springsteen’s music.
“It was so cool watching it with Bruce,” Chadha said to the audience. “We want the whole world to understand the music and the words of Bruce Springsteen. … The reason why I wanted to make this film is because of what is happening in the world.

Bend It Like Beckham director Gurinder Chadha cooks up this efficiently watchable drama about a rock fan’s yearning to become a writer
Here is a good-natured and likable movie – though machine-tooled to an internationally accepted feelgood standard – by Gurinder Chadha, who directed Bend It Like Beckham. Well, this is Sing It Like Springsteen. Or Live it Like Springsteen. It is adapted from Greetings from Bury Park, journalist Sarfraz Manzoor’s memoir about growing up in an unromantic suburb of Luton in Bedfordshire during the Thatcherite 80s, dealing with loneliness, racism, unemployment and the first pangs of love – and finding that rock music is his salvation.
Viveik Kalra is Javed, a young man who yearns to be a writer, to the consternation of his first-generation Pakistani-born dad, Malik, and anxious mum, Noor (there are lovely performances by Kulvinder Ghir and Meera Ganatra). Javed is drifting morosely through life, but when...

The songs of Bruce Springsteen transform the life of a British-Pakistani boy in Gurinder Chadha's Blinded by the Light.
Sometimes you find salvation in the unlikeliest of places. For Blinded by the Light’s Javed (Viveik Kalra), a British-Pakistani boy growing up in ‘80s Luton, it comes in the form of denim-clad all-American rocker Bruce Springsteen. A first generation immigrant, Javed is caught between the desire of his strict father Malik (Kulvinder Ghir) to become a doctor or lawyer, and his own yearning dream to express himself through words and lyrics. All of this plays out against the backdrop of rising unemployment, the encroaching National Front, and Thatcherism.
Wrestling with his cultural identity, Javed finds clarity after his schoolmate Roops (Aaron Phagura) lends him a pair of Springsteen cassettes--the Boss, Roops says, is “a direct line to all that’s true in this shitty world.” Late one night,...

In the borough of Luton, the Khan family is trying to get by and make ends meet amid the chaos. The patriarch (Kulvinder Ghir) has lost his job, the matriarch (Meera Ganatra) is forced to make ends meet by working late into the night for what might as well be nothing, and main lead Javed Khan (Viveik Kalra), wants to become a writer despite the expectations of his parents.
When Roops (Aaron Phagura), the only Sikh boy at school, introduces Khan to the music of Bruce Springsteen Khan is inspired. Javed finds his voice giving him the courage to follow his dreams, find love, and assert himself against family traditions that he believes are getting in the way of his dreams. Blinded By the Light and Yesterday are essentially uncritical, feature-length promos for heritage bands, and there’s more to come
If you only have a passing knowledge of the work of Bruce Springsteen, then let Blinded By the Light enlighten you. The film is an adaptation of Sarfraz Manzoor’s memoir about growing up in racist 1980s Luton as a British Pakistani “whose life was transformed by the music of Bruce Springsteen”.
It is also, unavoidably, a feature-length eulogy to, and advertisement for, the Boss. Springsteen’s music accompanies the emotional beats, his lyrics are projected across the screen, and his contribution to humanity argued in the strongest possible terms (“Bruce is the direct line to all that’s true in this shitty world”). If you don’t agree, you’re basically on the side of the skinhead racists and the conservative Muslim parents.

Sarfraz Manzoor was a teenager in Luton when he met a friend for life and discovered his musical hero. Now that fateful encounter is the subject of a major film
We were just kids. The first time I met Amolak was in autumn 1987. I was 16 and starting my first week at Luton sixth form college. My father worked on the production line at the Vauxhall car factory, my mother was a seamstress working from home and I was expected to get a stable, sensible job, have an arranged marriage and lead a quietly respectful life in obscurity. That isn’t how life turned out.
When I first ran into Amolak he had his headphones on, and when I asked what he was listening to he told me it was Bruce Springsteen. When I queried his music taste he told me Bruce was a direct line to all that was true in this world.

From writer/director/producer Gurinder Chadha (“Bend It Like Beckham”) comes the inspirational drama “Blinded by the Light,” set to the music and lyrics of Bruce Springsteen’s timeless songs. “Blinded by the Light” tells the story of Javed (Viveik Kalra) a British teen of Pakistani descent, growing up in the town of Luton, England, in 1987. Amidst the racial and economic turmoil of the times, he writes poetry as a means to escape the intolerance of his hometown and the inflexibility of his traditional father. But when a classmate introduces him to the music of “the Boss,” Javed sees parallels to his working-class life in Springsteen’s powerful lyrics. As Javed discovers a cathartic outlet for his own pent-up dreams, he also begins to find the courage to express himself in his own unique voice.

In this day and age, who do you picture as the stereotypical Bruce Springsteen fan? Maybe someone a bit older? Someone who lives in New Jersey? Someone working class? Someone white? In Bend It Like Beckham director Gurinder Chadha's new film, Blinded by the Light, it becomes immediately clear that the Boss's music is not only universal now, but has been for quite some time.
The inspirational drama set to Springsteen's timeless lyrics and music follows Javed (Viveik Kalra), a British teenager of Pakistani descent struggling to figure out who he really is while growing up in Britain in the late 1980s. While his inflexible parents push him to find a steady job, aspiring poet Javed happens upon Springteen's records and finds an unexpected parallel to his own working-class life.

Almost 20 years after he wrote the song for a “Harry Potter” movie, Bruce Springsteen has finally found a home for his unreleased ballad “I’ll Stand by You Always.” The song has been added to the end credits of “Blinded by the Light,” an upcoming, Springsteen-heavy New Line/Warner Bros. film from “Bend It Like Beckham” director Gurinder Chadha.
The song did not appear in “Blinded by the Light” when the film screened at Sundance in January, where its $15 million deal with New Line was the festival’s biggest. But it was added before this week’s screenings in Los Angeles and at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, and will now follow the song “Born to Run” during the end credits.
